[" Portes et Fenêtres = «) Flomberie, Chauffage NORM ef Excavation Profitable | business gained due to showing at Brome Fair ‘95 Rolling on Gold Financing Available Heating & Ventilation Normand Guillemette 666 Knowlton Rd., Lac Brome (514) 243-6058 really sinks in and the storytelling becomes conventionally involving. As played by a charming yet disengagingly distant Paul Hopkins (last seen in Beau Geste but hard to tell with his nihilistic buzz cut) Alex is a rebel without cause.Looting and harassing his innocent victims, Alex is driven to rage and, ultimately, murder.Taken to prison, he soon becomes the subject of a government experiment to cleanse the mind of violent thoughts.Needless to say, the experiment is mishandled and the government's case study in reforming its young anarchist soon turns into a bittersweet healing process. It is in fact the story that holds this production together.Yet as experimental theatre (sure to close on a Broadway stage before opening night) it is too showy, too colorful and, yes, too coherent for its young crowd (they’d be better off reading the book or renting the video). As mainstream work, aimed at the company’s core audience of middle aged sophisticates, it’s just too raw, too noisy and, mostly, too tough.Either way, the play is set to lose. The actors play multiple roles, but only Jayne Paterson (last seen in Jeanne) does something with her non- existing characters. Her voice enhances the music. She practically steals the show with her glowing face and strong pipes.Hausvater knows this and maximizes here what could have been minimal contribution. This actress-singer has definite presence. What is particularly telling in this production comes at the very end.The title number closes the evening and proves to be hardly as powerful as the last speech uttered before the music takes over.To say that A Clockwork — The Musical is not the piece that Bulldog needs right now is an understatement in search of an immediate solution.A Clockwork Orange — The Musical runs at the Rialto Theatre in Montreal through November 5.Performances are Tues.-Sat.8 p.m., Sun.7 p.m., with matinees Tues.and Sun.at 1:30 p.m.Tel: (514) 272-3899.BULWER COMMUNITY CENTRE Saturday, October 21 Music by THE HOEDOWNERS Admission charged EVERYONE WELCOME IRV VEDI LCL Nn ge vg prentzo v ie .2 Your Birthday Friday, Oct.20, 1995 As was the custom of past years and despite the weather, more than 10 crews came “down the Pike” in the annual canoe race.No one knows who won, from what this reporter could ascertain, no one cared.Let's not forget the “So & Sew Stitchers” who produced the lovely merchandise and helped man (whoops!) fe-man the boutique.Sheila, Mary and Pamela would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Stanbridge East Fire Brigade for the traffic control, to the scores of volunteers who came together to make this year’s festival another resounding success and especially the pie makers! Phillip Alder Fish is supposed to be good for the brain. But maybe bridge is better, as it keeps the mind active. And once you reach an advanced age, you can use Dennis Wolfberg's line: “There’s one advantage to being 102.There’s no peer pressure.” However, there are peers who play bridge.Arguably the best, Lord Harold Lever, died last August. He played today's deal in the sixth match between the House of Commons and House of Lords in 1980._ If the bidding looks strange, there was an extenuating circumstance: the score. It was rubber bridge with North- South 60 on and East-West 90.So, Lever, South, responded one no-trump to try to end the auction. However, Mrs.(now Baroness) Oppenheim, West, wasn't going quietly.Hence her dangerous two-diamond overcall.West led the diamond five: three, jack, queen.A club to the 10 and jack was followed by the diamond eight: nine, 10, heart six.West switched to a subtle spade five. After winning with the king, East returned his last diamond.Lever went up with his ace, successfully finessed dummy’s club queen and cashed the club ace, getting the bad news.He continued with the spade ace and spade jack, overtaken with his queen.Again, bad news, but West had no defense. Her hand had counted out, so Lever had an answer to any discard. When West threw the diamond seven, Lever exited with his last diamond.West cashed the club king, but then had to lead away from the heart king.Eight tricks in and another rubber won.NORTH 10-21-95 aK QJ 4 v53 eA KS +8 743 WEST EAST 485 2 4109763 v9 42 vA +QJ98 his partner could show only one ace, South signed off in five hearts. After West had led the diamond queen, South took time out — paused — to consider the best line.Having two aces to lose, he had to avoid extra club losers. There were discards available on dummy's spades, but there was no longer à dummy entry.Spotting the solution, South won the first trick with the diamond king and cashed the diamond ace, discarding his spade ace.He continued with dummy's three spade winners, throwing his three low clubs. Then came a trump.East won with the ace and returned a spade, but South ruffed high and drew trumps.Graciously, he conceded a club to West's ace.Note that if South tries a club to the king before taking his discards, he goes two down, losing three clubs and a heart.A rozzer is a police officer. Can you think of a top cop who is also a good bridge player?I know only one.He lives in London and keeps a low profile while guarding both leading politicians and his tricks.© 1995 by NEA Inc.Cordless phones far from secure Dear Ann Landers: Since your column is a good source for useful information, ! decided to write and tell you what happened to me recently.I was talking long distance on a cordless phone when all of a sudden, I could hear another conversation. It was between a man and a woman, who was apparently handling his investments. He gave her his first name and then told her all the necessary information - account numbers, numbers of shares and dollar amounts. She confirmed each account, the financial institution handling the transaction and gave confirmation numbers for each transaction. She then said, "Thank you, Mr.Doe,” and hung up.I was stunned that anyone would transact financial business on a cordless telephone.I now know the man's full name, his telephone number and some vital information concerning several of his investments.Sorry to say, but there are too many crooks out there who would be quick to use this information to their advantage. So, Ann, please tell your readers to be aware. They should never use a cordless or cellular phone when conducting business or relaying personal information.- AREADER IN FLORIDA DEAR FLORIDA: I printed a similar letter quite a while ago, buta second warning won't hurt, and it might help.I might add that traditional phones are not 100 percent secure either.Although wires rarely get crossed, it can and does Ann Landers Dear Ann Landers: Can it be that my mother-in-law is addicted to shopping?“Pearl's” husband has a successful business and provides her with a lot of spending money, but the only time she seems truly happy is when she is shopping. Most other times, she seems somewhat depressed.Pearl's home is cluttered with all sorts of decorative objects, but she continues to buy more.I have noticed that she is on a real high when she comes home with a carload of shopping bags. Her cuphoria is usually short-lived, howevez, and she sinks back into a depressed state until the next shopping trip.I love my mother-in-law dearly, but I am worried about her.Is there anything I can do to help?- WORRIED IN FENTON, MO.DEAR MISSOURI: Shopping can indeed be an addiction, and it sounds as if your mother-in-law has it.Pearl's uncontrolled passion to buy things is her way of lifting herself out of the dumps. The woman needs professional help, and I hope she gets it soon.Dear Ann Landers: Our 2-year- old daughter has a very rare scalp disease. No one seems to know what can be done to help her We have been to two doctors, and they say they have never seen anything like it.I am not writing to ask about a cure. What I need to know is how to deal with people who make rude remarks and ask hurtful questions. Our daughter is aware that she is being stared at, and she hears them ask, "Why doesn't the child have hair?" or, even worse, "How come the kid is bald?” We would appreciate some answers.- AUGUSTA, GA, PARENTS DEAR PARENTS: Simply say, *She has a skin condition,” and nothing more.I hope you have taken her to a dermatologist. One option is an attractive little bonnet. If the condition cannot be helped, consider a hairpiece.I hope something turns up that can help your daughter Good luck, deac ACROSS 32 Safe 55 Copy Corot 32 Amount of 42 Makes 47 Ad award 1 Die out 33 — Grande 56 Squadron current blueprints 48 Forbidden act
