However, if you wish to celebrate before that, go down near the border, where on Saturday, June 27 they will have a dual celebration.Rock Island’s 100th and Canada’s 125th.To make your weekend complete, skip down to Bury on Sunday for an Ecumenical Church Service with dignitai- ries from Quebec and from outside the province. It will be under canvas, starting at 10 a.m.and followed by their great parade at noon.In Hatley on July 1, you’ll find the ambience great. The Parade Committee is looking to have a parade of at least 14 floats.PARADE Under the watchful eye of Marshall Homer Cote, the parade starts from the United Church shortly after 11, or when all the cars get parked, so if you plan to be a later-comer, we won’t wait for you too long.Stan Whitcomb and a family member on horseback will carry Quebec’s and Canada’s flags, which we hope will always be together. This has been a tradition since way back in 1908, when we recorded the first parade in Hatley, what was then East Hatley. While we are celebrating in conjunction with the Canada 125 program, the Eastern Townships has 200 years under its belt.Quebec is recognizing 200 years of democracy, Rock Island has its 100th and the Bury celebration is 65 years old.On the roads leading into Ha- tley, you will encounter volunteers asking for a contribution toward the cost of the day. There’s no set amount, but you get more tickets for valuable prizes to be drawn. We spent over $1000 just on floats, bringing horses here, and other features such as the bicycle gang and sports. We will have a board with numbers on it, so if you see your number go to the booth with the prizes.ROYAL ORR Once again, Royal Orr of CJAD will be on hand to tell you who’s who on floats, horses and cars, and to welcome Robert Benoit, our MNA for this riding. The committee has heard from a number of people planning on entering floats, but will always take more at the last minute.Don’t forget your chair to watch the floats, the kids and their decorated bikes, the great array of horse flesh and those proud owners of antique cars. This year, the parade boasts two bands, plus a possible piper to lead the veterans. The Ayer’s Cliff Legion branch extends an invitation to all veterans to parade with them and suggests you meet them at the United Church to get in the lineup. You won’t want to miss this year’s parade in Hatley.Right after you have heard the judge's choice for best float in the parade, you might want to rush over to the Anglican Church Hall, where the ladies group will serve you a cold cut dinner.Or maybe your taste is for homemade bake beans and pie, which you can get at the United Church’s bean booth. The firemen will have a canteen and Jean Levesque’s great hot dogs and hamburgers may tempt your palate.BOOK FAIR If you missed it on the way in, the Hatley Library is holding forth in the town hall with a book fair and art auction.Poems for Canada Day Following the break for lunch, festivities will begin around 12:30, when the Massey Vanier Band will give a concert. This is to be followed by Alice Mellish and her cloggers. This group is always a great treat, so you should stick around to enjoy them.A sports event will follow, where father or mother can watch to see if junior came in first.Starting at 7 p.m., there will be a musical treat, which should be to your liking. It will feature Blue Moon, a new group, both vocal and musical.Ron Haselton is planning on coming with an orchestra.Ron is a Hatley native from way back when. There’s a possibility of singing talent coming from Man- sonville and a special return engagement of an Eastern Townshipper who calls himself J.R.You'll all know him when you hear him sing.Last on the program for the evening is a brother act. They are Lester and Gary Drew, who are a crackerjack firework team, and not out of a box ° either.! .© » You will be royally welcomed in Hatley for Canada Day and the 125th birthday of our B00-567-60 great country.Hope you will be there to take in these great acti- D4 ' vities!
