newsroom(@sherbrookerecord.com | The Record 4 Quitting his day job: Jim Hansen steps up to become full time activist By Francois Tanguay im Hansen has been at NASA for 46 years, he is now 72 and intends to fight for climate closer to the front.Hansen is without a doubt the most outspoken climatologist in the world. His work has been instrumental in waking up the science community to the urgency of what he calls “the coming climate catastrophe.” Though he is officially retiring from his high profile job as head of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, we should hear a lot more from him in the next while. It was 1988 when he first warned the US Congress on the dangers of a climate gone wild if we do not intervene to bring down our global carbon emissions fast.Few paid attention. He was so outspoken that under the George W.Bush administration he was victim of a full-out war from his superiors to muzzle him. These events are well covered in his only book: Storms of my grandchildren, published by Bloom- bury in 2009.In a thirty page chapter he gives us the full story. It is fascinating. In a statement to the New York Times he said he plans to take a more active role in lawsuits challenging the federal and state governments over their failure to limit emissions. He is also at the forefront of the battle to stop the Keystone XL pipeline project. He went as far as getting arrested in front of the White House with a host of other celebrities in a protest rally against the controversial project.Hansen was also quoted as saying: “As a government employee, you can’t testify against the government.” Sounds familiar to you?He added that some high ranking officials at NASA will be happy his ‘sideshow’ will be taken elsewhere. He says that at and the science community. His constant work and the hundreds of students and fellow scientists who worked with him have given us all a major body of work that acts as a threshold to our actions on climate change.Dr.Hansen has warned the politicians many times about the dire consequences of a climate gone astray. In his book he points out the two most imminent impacts of global warming: sea level rise and loss of biodiversity. The rise in sea levels may not be obvious to us right now but he has the numbers that point to a potential rise of as much as a full metre in the next 100 years. This means southern Florida will become the ‘Venice of the South!’ À direct effect of a loose climate will be seasons going out of sync, species being forced to change habitat zones and having a DEAR EDITOR: is is a copy of a letter sent to Yves Cousineau, President of the Quebec Human Rights Commission.Mr.Yves Cousineau President CDPD] Dear Mr.Cousineau: As a concerned Anglophone and bilingual Quebecer, I personally welcome your criticism of Minister Agnes Maltais’ stance on social assistance. However, I am also very concerned about the Commission’s non-stance on Bill 14, presented by Minister de Courcy, and all its ramifications to minorities in this province. As you know, Bill 14 removes the designation “ethnic minorities” and replaces it with “cultural communities.” The former has status in international, national and provincial human rights codes. The latter has no such status. The former has the weight of the UN Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, the UN Covenant on Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities of 1992, the Quebec City declaration of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance of October 2012, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Quebec Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These are extremely important changes to the Quebec Charter and could impact on the rights of all minorities living and working here in addition to other severe provisions of this draft law.As a member of the Executive Committee of CRITIQ, Canadian Rights in Quebec, a rapidly-expanding non-profit organization civil rights group, I am certain that Anglophones, Francophones and Allophones of all origins are questioning the Commission's deafening silence on this major issue currently in the foreground of language tensions in this province. Will the CDPD] be taking a position on this issue, why has it been silent so far and when can Quebecers expect an objective assessment of this law from the province’s human rights watchdog?More importantly, will Quebec honour the international human rights commitments and covenants it has signed in the past in this regard? These are fair and honest questions and we would certainly appreciate a response in writing within a reasonable period of time.If the Commission can pronounce itself on the far-reaching changes that Minister Maltais proposes, we do not understand why it cannot pronounce itself on the impacts of the new language law proposed by Minister de Courcy. Is it a matter of not wishing to rock the boat among the Commission’s political masters, or is it because the Commission itself endorses this new linguistic measure even in the face of international commitments it has signed in the past?We have also taken note of the Commission’s lack of provision of English in its intake procedure for complaints since the assistant manager heading this department is unilingual French, and the alleged bilingual staff under her direction are not fully bilingual.Would it not be better for all constituents of both languages to have a bilingual individual in this critical position?Or are the basic rights of Quebecers with English as a mother tongue not important? The credibility of your alleged autonomous and independent organization, and the rights of all Quebecers are at stake. Please pronounce yourself on Bill 14.Yours very truly, MICHAEL MELBOURNE, ON. The Record - newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2013 Page 7 (COLUMNIST Sweet reasonableness is a good thing at any time or under any situation when partnered with conviction.STEVEN BLACK is morning I would have | a hard time answering the following question: “If a federal election was held today which party would you vote for?” There are three criteria ! tend to use in making a voting decision: first, the policy or ideology of the party including its election platform; second, the strategic value of my vote; and third, the character of those running.By far the single most important criterion for me has been the policy or ideology of the party. This has usually determined my vote over the 40 years I have voted. It won’t surprise the regular reader to know that my values have normally prompted me to vote Progressive Conservative or Conservative.I've done so in almost every federal election except for a Liberal vote during Pierre Trudeau’s early leadership and NDP in the last election. The values that are important to me are individual responsibility and liberty; de- Character matters centralization of powers; the worth and dignity of unborn humans; the support of the traditional, nuclear family; free enterprise and the freedom to live, communicate and conduct business in the language of one’s own choosing and according to one’s own conscience. For me, these matters are of fundamental importance out of which gevernment programs ought to flow.In Ontario provincial elections I have voted for a party that had no chance of winning merely because I wanted to make a statement that I supported it’s stated principles. In the last election, however, I voted strategically.I calculated that the Conservatives had no possibility of winning a seat in this riding so I selected the party that I believed to be most capable of defeating the Bloc.Besides that, issues of human compassion and environmental stewardship are very important to a healthy nation.I am happy to have a party like the NDP represented in the House who will fight for these concerns as well as to temper a Conservative ide ology that can seem to be driven only by commitment to economic growth.Today, though, I'm inclined to give greater weight to the matter of the character of a party’s leadership.A party’s ideology is important, no question. But the character of those seeking to implement an ideology is critical to its being done in a just, democratic and respectful manner. The fact is that Canadians are not a single block of like-minded individuals or with equally weighted issues that impact their aspirations for a good quality of life.Furthermore, the various regions of the country have unique concerns and priorities. Therefore, a rigidly followed ideology can lead to injustice and tyranny over and against the good of both individuals and regions. Thus, any party policy must be tempered by leaders who are compassionate, respectful of diverse points of view and willing to allow public challenge to their priorities and actions. In recent years we've debated the importance of the character of our leaders in determining our votes. This spectacle has most of all played out in the United States.Nixon’s, “I am not a crook” or Clinton’s, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” rang hollow, but their supporters insisted that moral flaws, even spectacular ones, ought not to determine votes because they had no influence on their ability to govern well.Sometimes I've agreed, thinking something like, “Pd rather have a competent crook in leadership than an incompetent Saint.” With this approach pragmatism reigns supreme.I'm not so sure about this approach to voting now.To the point, the way I've been assessing the Conservative leadership lately including Prime Minister Harper is raising serious doubt about this.Admittedly my conclusions about their character are based on what has been filtered and presented through various news media. However, when the party's leadership seems actively to muzzle it’s own backbenchers against expressing their views and having their Parliamentary rights squashed such as the right to present private member’s bills I worry about what this does to our democratic system. When scientists of government departments are not permitted to go public with their findings I worry about what else is being hidden from Canadians. Both of these matters speak to whether or not the party truly values individual liberty or respects the electorate. When a party sets policy that seems indifferent to important regional concerns | wonder whether it is truly committed to decentralized powers. When programs intended to care for vulnerable individuals at home or internationally are being cut for budgetary reasons I worry that policy is being driven by profit rather than people. After all, people make up a country not dollars. When very sly maneuverings are undertaken with a view to re-election more than principled leadership I come to conclude that the stated policies are less important than the consolidation of power. If I am correct, these observations speak to deep character flaws that reflect ugly rot at the heart of a party’s core. The only recovery from this is a recovery of character. While I have spoken about my concerns regarding the leadership of the federal Conservatives the same concerns could apply about other parties and levels of government as well. The old statement, “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely” seems incontrovertible.Policy or ideology has little ability to counteract corruption.Character, though, is a powerful antidote.Ideology is rigid, heartless and can be dangerous.Character gives me hope for understanding and compassion.Sweet reasonableness is a good thing at any time or under any situation when partnered with conviction. Therefore, today I would vote for a person of character. In a world of corruption and political maneuvering character is necessary to assure that our politics are subservient to humanity and not the other way around.Author to speak at Earth Charter conference To hold a Vernissage of nature-based mandala paintings in Knowlton in June Record Staff musician Julia Rohan has een invited to speak at the U.N.Earth Charter conference to take place in late June in San Jose, Costa Rica.Organized by the Global Ecological Integrity Group, the conference seeks to find new ways to promote the Quebec tells ministers to speak French with Canadian counterparts The Canadian Press he Quebec government has introduced a new initiative that encourages cabinet ministers to speak only French to their counterparts from other provinces and Ottawa. The strategy is part of the Parti Quebecois’ plan to push its sovereigntist agenda and ‘prevent what it sees as intrusions by Ottawa in Quebec's jurisdictions.Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Alexandre Cloutier told a news conference Wednesday that Quebec's initiative to limit English usage by its ministers is only a guideline, not a restriction.“The official language in Quebec is French and all the papers being prepared are in French, all documentation is in French, and we think it’s necessary to use the same language that it is written (in),” Cloutier said in Quebec City. The French-only guideline, Cloutier added, refers to exchanges by Quebec cabinet and deputy ministers during ministerial meetings.Ministers, he said, are free to use English in letters and during informal chats with their Canadian counterparts.Cloutier said ministers may explain subjects in English with their anglophone counterparts when they see fit.Quebec also announced the creation of a $1.5-million commission to study the impacts of the Harper government’s em- ployment-insurance reform, which Cloutier said was imposed on Quebecers without their consultation. The Marois government has appointed former Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe and ex-PQ cabinet minister Rita Dionne-Marsolais as the commission’s co-presidents.PQ Labour Minister Agnes Maltais insisted the process will be “neutral,” even though it will be headed by two former sover- eigntist politicians.Cloutier said similar tools could be used in the future to examine other areas where the PQ believes the federal government has encroached on the province’s jurisdiction. He pledged to push legal boundaries wherever possible to ensure Quebec jurisdictions are protected from federal government involvement and to reduce overlaps with Ottawa.“We don’t want to raise the level of hostility, we want to defend Quebecers and workers,” said Cloutier, a constitutional lawyer educated at the University of Cambridge, in Britain.“But (at) the same time I would just say to Ottawa: ‘respect the law, respect the Constitution and stop acting in Quebec’s field and stop acting in ways that are affecting our economy.’ He said Canada’s “paternal istic” brand of federalism is still alive under Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The Harper government responded to the PQ’s announcements Wednesday by saying it has created a job-creating plan while the Marois government has a sovereignty plan.“We are not interested in old fights,” Transport Minister Denis Lebel said in a statement. On the issue of language, a Harper spokesman said provincial governments have the freedom to choose whether they want to communicate with Ottawa in French or English. The PQ delivered a forceful message in its platform during last year’s provincial election campaign, pledging to pick fights with the federal government. The party announced it would make attempts to take over federal powers such as in- come-tax collection.PQ members boldly stated that, if Ottawa refused any request, it would bolster their case for sovereignty. But the PQ toned down its ambitions after it won a minority mandate in the September election.By Olivia Ranger-Enns Record Correspondent Sherbrooke “A Knight's Tale,” said he felt “an enormous amount of pressure” to be faithful to Robinson’s story, both because of his significance and because his life had been written about so extensively. That included recreating games right from the box scores. So when Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) homers during a crucial pen- nant-race game off a pitcher who’d dinged him earlier in the year, it’s a dramatic moment, but it also actually happened.“It’s always a tricky thing because it’s a movie, and even in this movie we're trying to tell two years in two hours,” he said.“You're obviously not seeing every moment, but the discipline I applied to the script was trying to make sure every moment was documented.” Helgeland began working on the film two years ago, with the blessing of Robinson’s widow, Rachel, because he felt Robinson “deserves a great, big movie.” Robinson himself starred in the 1950 biography “The Jackie Robinson Story,” which also details how Brooklyn Dodgers president and general manager Branch Rickey (played here by a feisty Harrison Ford) had the courage to sign the fleet-footed Negro League player, despite receiving discouragement from around the league and death threats from fans.“People would say to me, ‘You're making another Jackie Robinson movie?’ and I'd say, ‘What was the other one you saw?” Helgeland said.“(Racism is) always going to be a relevant thing. It’s not a thing that’s ever going to be eradicated.Society has to stay on guard about it and not get complacent about it.” Boseman, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Robinson, grew up playing basketball but said he learned of Robinson’s importance around the same time he first learned of Martin Luther King Jr.’s crucial role in fighting for civil rights.Robinson’s uniform number has been retired throughout the league — only New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera still wears it, and he’s retiring after this season — but every year on April 15, everyone in baseball wears No.42.“The story is relevant because we still stand on his shoulders. He started something — I would even say maybe he did- n’t even start it, it started before him.But he carried the torch. And he carried it alone for a period of time before other people could help him,” Boseman said.Still, it’s a challenge to depict the life of someone who was so inspirational without deifying him.In “42,” which opens April 12, Robinson shows grace in the face of nearly incessant bigotry. That’s why Rickey chooses him of all the talented black baseball players at the time: He had the skills, but he also had the strength not to fight back.“He would get his revenge on the base paths a little but he didn’t shy away from contact when he was barrelling into the catcher, those kinds of things,” Helgeland said.“You want to humanize him.The romance with the wife (played by Nicole Beharie) does that. The fact that he does- n't quite get along with (journalist and guide) Wendell Smith does that, which I think was the case in real life,” he said.“You kind of need to go for this vibe: It’s the actor and the director trying to have a feel for what feels real and right in the moment.” Baseball historian Howard Bryant, author and senior writer for ESPN.com and ESPN the Magazine, said he understands that some changes occur in making a film with historical origins, as was the widely publicized case with several 2012 Oscar contenders, including best picture “Argo.” But he said Hollywood can’t take liberties with stories like Robinson’s.“It would lose its credibility for me.I would lose respect for it if it were a Hollywood show,” said Bryant, whose books include “Shut Out,” about the role racism played in the Boston Red Sox struggles.“We have a special talent in this country for scrubbing history, and I'm hoping that’s not what happens to a story like Jackie Robinson’s.” Bryant points out that Major League Baseball has been slow to diversify and still has a long way to go.In 2012, 8.8 per cent of players were black, with only two black managers and two black general CONT’D ON PAGE 17 WEEKDAY MORNING Your week on TV LJ AM LC 7 AM rc) 10AM ™ 10:30 1 IWCAX EB) - - News CBS This Morning Rachael Ray Dr.Phil The Price Is Right WPTZ 8 - - With writer's cramp, the muscles of your fingers, hand or forearm cramp or spasm during writing. Why does this happen? The precise reasons are uncertain, but it is possible that insufficient nerve signals from your hand into your spinal cord and brain lead to an inadequate “relaxation signal” from your brain to your hand. You may notice that the more you try to write, the worse the cramping gets.Your hand may even jerk involuntarily. That happens to me.Most cases of writer's cramp have no identifi able cause. But in rare cases, writer's cramp may result from disc disease in the neck, certain drugs (such as lithium), or brain disease (including stroke or tumors).A common but mistaken belief is that muscle cramps dare caused by abnormal potassium, sodium or calcium. That may be true on occasion, but not usually.Still, I've known some patients who report that eating more potassium — in the form of a banana or glass of orange juice each day — led to improved handwriting. There's no real treatment for writer's cramp, but there are a few things you can try: — Use a keyboard more often. If you don’t like typing, speech recognition software on computers and tablets works well. And I see lots of people who used to take notes in longhand during meetings now typing notes into their tablets and laptop computers.SUDOKU — Sometimes using a pen or pencil with a larger grip improves the situation.Difficulty: 5 (of 5) — Don’t concentrate harder on your handwriting: This can make your hand 5 9 4 muscles tense up even more.Instead, try to really relax your hand as you write. That helps me.— More formal relaxation techniques, hypnosis and biofeedback may 2 be helpful for some people.— With your doctor's supervision you may try certain medications. These include trihexyphenidyl (Artane), propranolol (Inderal, others) or botulinum toxin (Botox) injections. They seem to help some people, although there are not many good studies of this treatment.Writer's cramp can be irritating. It’s one of those minor maladies that tend 6 1 4 to creep up on us as we get older. On rare occasions it can be a sign of an underlying and serious neurological 3 4 1 condition. But almost always it’s just 6 7 an aggravation, not a serious problem.4-5-13 ©2013 JFS/KF Dist.ay Uneversac Ucuick roa UFS (Dr.Komaroff is a physician |andg.13 ©2013 JFS/KF Dist.ey Unvensau Ucuex sor UES - professor at Harvard Medical PREVIOUS SOLUTION School. To send questions, go to PREVIOUS SOLUTION = AskDoctorK.com, or write: Ask 315/8/2|/6/4|/9/1/7 Doctor K, 10 Shattuck St., Secdnd 311 21/7/1815 6 9 4 2 Fl , Boston, MA 02115.) experience. He that travelleth into a country before he hath some entrance into the language, goeth to school and not to travel.” I suppose that has a parallel in bridge. He that playeth on one suit before he hath some sort of entrance into that hand elsewhere, goeth to destruction and not to success. In this deal, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads a low heart?North’s three clubs was a weak jump overcall, showing a good six-card suit and 6 to 10 high-card points.South bid what he hoped he could make.West wisely allowed the unfavorable vulnerability to silence him.West, deciding that South was prepared for a spade lead, tried a sneaky heart attack.Clearly, South needed to establish and run dummy’s club suit. However, assuming the defender with the club ace had learned the game more than an hour ago, he would know not to take the first round of clubs, but to wait until the second round. Then declarer realized that he would need a dummy entry. So, instead of taking a cheap first trick with dummy’s heart 10, he overtook with his ace and played on clubs, starting with his jack, the honor from the shorter side first.East won the second club and shifted to a spade, but South took that trick with his ace and led a heart to force a dummy entry. In whatever language you speak, when you are establishing a long
