of consultations with key economic, social, and cultural actors within the Centre-ville 2020 project, Commerce Sherbrooke finally went to the public for its contribution to their vision of the city’s future. In April, city council unanimously supported Commerce Sherbrooke’s Centre-ville 2020 initiative, which aims to develop a long- term development plan for the city centre. In the last few weeks, a consultation process has been undertaken by the non-profit group in which Sherbrooke Commerce met with representatives of para- municipal organizations, the business community, property owners and developers, the school system, large institutions, cultural organizations and social organizations to discuss their needs and their vision before a working committee chaired by resident Jean-Pierre Bertrand.Following the suggestions and issues raised at the roundtables, the committee developed a new, and, it believes, improved version of its strategic vision. This was revealed Wednesday at a public meeting at the John Besré Centre for the Performing Arts.“The downtown sector is the heart and soul of a city,” said Commerce Sherbrooke president, Louisda which the downtown area had sunk by the 1980s and 90s, when nearly 40 per cent of the buildings were vacant.“You had to be a loser to move downtown in those days,” he said.Gilles Marcoux, the Direc tor of Commerce Sherbrooke, outlined the ideas in the current working plan, which includes heritage preservation, the development of advantages provided by the rivers, the importance of maintaining commercial, residential, and cultural characteristics, and the establishment of sustainable modes of transport.“The goal is to create an attractive and distinctive living environment,” he said. The discussion turned to more practical matters when the public began to express its concerns. One citizen complained about the noise from the numerous outdoor concerts and performances, pointing out that she had “the right to be by myself in my room with the windows open.” In general, the priority for residents is to create a pleasant living environment and not just a tourist attraction.Another comment criticized some architectural choices, pointing to the ugliness of several buildings.Others argued for greater room for innovation, including the creation The opening of the bakery and pastry shop in 2011 made the circle complete.“Baking with freshly-ground flour makes a difference,” says Julie.“The flour works more easily and the yeast little economic news out of this mining town has been good. But that may change soon because one homegrown industry, ABS Trailers, is set to expand in the coming year.“ABS is short for the word Asbestos, because we want the town of Asbestos known as a place where quality products are made,” said company president Francois Gouin. The trailers use a conveyor belt at the bottom of a large, wheeled storage bin to unload loose, dry bulk materials such as rocks, asphalt or cement instead of dumping it with a tipping bin that can result in costly accidents.Last year, the number of trailers made at its two Asbestos factories totaled 80, sold to clients as far away as Russia and Iran.In an interview last week, Gouin said the next step is to find a larger factory to allow the company to increase production.“We are at full capacity now and cannot expand our present buildings,” he said.“We need to find or build a factory that has at least 30,000 square feet of space. We are presently studying our options and want to decide on a better facility by next year.” With a present workforce of 29, ABS is poised to become the town’s second largest industrial employer after the Laroche abattoir, which has more than 100 employees.- In 1990, ABS built its first trailer for an Ontario client, which took most of the autumn.NE the closure of the Jeffrey as- confident his expansion dreams will come true given that there are only two other live-bottom trailer makers in North America - one in PEI and the other in Idaho.“We are developing a reputation for quality because our trailers need little maintenance and last a long time,” said Gouin.“The ABS name is starting to represent a quality mark similar to that of IBM or BMW.Our type of trailer may still be a niche market in the transport and construction industry, but demand is still growing for us.” More importantly for the town, the company wants to keep its operation in Asbestos where it was born in 1987.“My brother Benoit started out with a welding and paint shop that serviced trucks,” said Gouin.“Then he learned from the trucking firm Asbestos Eastern about the need for trailers and decided to build one and see if it would sell.Everything needed for the trailer was made here and that is still the case today. And we want to keep it that way.” Gouin has heard all the arguments about relocating the business to a larger industrial centre such as Drum- mondyville or Montréal to expand operations. But he has rejected those arguments local entrepreneur Jean Yves Dube sold part of his BionX bicycle firm to Magna International in Toronto to get more operational capital. The result was the loss of the company’s local manufacturing facility.Magna convinced Dube it would be more profitable to make the electrically power-assisted bicycles in Aurora, Ontario and move its research and development branch to Sherbrooke where more engineers and technical specialists were available. The result was the loss of 25 local jobs.“Our company has a similar philosophy to that of the Lemaire brothers, owners of Cascades, in Kingsey Falls,” said Gouin.“There has been a lot of pressure put on them to move their small town head office to Montréal, but they have resisted because their father came from nearby Drummondville and their extended family live in the town.“Most of their key branch operations have been built in the town and they employ a lot of local people.” Two months ago, the Lemaire brothers chose local Danville resident Mario Plourde as their new president, partly because he shares their “philosophy” of keeping Cascades in the Kingsey Falls area.Gouin welcomes the $50 million diversification fund granted to the area last month by the provincial government as a way of financing their expansion and avoiding having to sell part of their company to raise cash. The diversification fund was created as compensation for canceling a $58 million loan to the Jeffrey mine last year that would have helped create up to 400 mining jobs.Gouin admits he will have to distant himself from the application process for the fund because he headed the local committee that helped shape it in the first place.; “The fund was not set up just for my company,” he said.“But that does not mean another member of ABS cannot apply for funding. The money is meant to expand local companies like ours and create more local employment.I just have to stay out of the how we have progressed because of it.What have we learned and how have we been shaped by these events?I'm definitely glad that order has been restored and that this is now behind us.I'm not convinced, however, that we've come out of it stronger. If anything, we've come out of it badly beaten and bruised.Adversity is the true test of character. This applies to the whole of society as much as it does to an individual.Having the courage of our convictions, sticking to our principles, working hard, and persevering through difficult times, often makes us stronger in the end.If, on the other hand, we take the easy road and refuse to stick to our principles, if we give in and begin to compromise our values, we become weaker.Unfortunately, we chose the latter route. Some may say that the protesters should be applauded as they were the ones who were determined and persevering. They made enormous sacrifices that paid off. Some may argue that the only reason I criticize is because of who won the day. This is not so.Though I recognize that they were indeed determined and persevering, I also recognize _ that there was nothing truly virtuous about the principles they defended.Firstly, student associations couldn’t even demonstrate that they represented a majority of students, much less a majority of Quebecers.Polls were constantly confirming the fact that the majority of Quebecers were in favour of tuition hikes. They also showed, however, that they were unsatisfied with the way the government was handling the crisis. These two realities were confirmed on election night. The Liberals lost power, while a majority of elected members were from parties that favoured tuition hikes.Secondly, the spirit of the movement revealed itself ‘to be rather ugly. Our freedom of expression and our right to peaceful assembly were seriously I= been one year since the massive abused of.The initial purpose of personal expression swiftly faded away.It was quickly supplanted with a new purpose, that to intimidate and disrupt in order to get something.Protestors intimidated journalists and politicians who were unfavourable to their cause. They disrupted traffic and business activities, and they violated their fellow student’s right to education. Then, as they sensed that momentum was on their side, they began demanding more. Why not?Nothing could stop them now.“Free tuition!” they proclaimed. In no way is any of this consistent with the principles of a free society.Freedom of expression exists so a person can stand up, be counted, and be heard. It is the freedom to peacefully persuade your fellow citizens with verbal arguments and debates, not to threaten them into getting something. The right to peaceful assembly exists so like minded individuals can freely gather and exercise their freedom of expression in unison, not to intimidate the population and to hold them hostage. The lesson learned was this. You don’t need a good cause. You don’t even need a majority. You just need to be numerous, organized, loud, and disruptive to get what you want. There is a term for this. It’s called mob-rule.When a child behaves this way we call it a tantrum. When a parent gives in to tantrums, the child becomes a spoiled brat who believes he’s entitled to everything based on the fact that he exists.Another noteworthy event was the disgusting display of opportunism on the part of a certain provincial politician. She took to the streets with her red square (« communist symbol) and her pots and pans (with which she seemed oddly unfamiliar), betting on the extra votes from what suddenly appeared to be a politically motivated segment of the population.the youths. The students, Marois bet, were her ticket to her for the Lennoxville Farmer’s Market! That a farmer's market can make the front page of the newspaper is an accurate reflection, I think, of the public’s burgeoning interest in the food safety, quality, provenance and sovereignty jssues that affect all of us who eat.Although our dedicated and hardworking growers are a little frustrated with this abnormally rainy spring, that didn’t dampen our spirits on Saturday.Farmers brought their early offerings and eager customers came to get their first taste of very fresh, very local food.Hopefully our expanded format will serve our returning customers better and attract some new ones as well.I am really look ing forward to the upcoming season and all the terrific opportunities I'll have to interact with folks who appreciate and seek out lovingly grown food! That no one died in all those bombings is probably best explained by Weathermen incompetence and blind luck. For years Boudin was active with the Weathermen and worked in solidarity with the poorest of the poor in Cleveland.Rats, roaches, dirt, frustration and hopelessness. She wanted to help others and Weathermen seemed to offer a direction.Boudin and the Brink's Robbery, 1981 In 1981 Kathy Boudin was once more in the national news for her part in a failed Brinks Bank robbery that led to the death of two policemen and a Brinks security guard. In her years underground she was relatively a minor player. If, like me, you think being underground sounds exciting or interest ing think again.Dull is a better word. For her it meant menial jobs, little pay, long hours, changing identity, ongoing lying, and much of the time doing nothing. Her choice, but she had been a straight A student at Bryn Mawr, highly intelligent, and planning a career in medicine.Of course things happened while underground but there was little evidence of progress.Life takes strange turns.Things go awry.We all make bad decisions. In that field Kathy excelled.Boudin learned about the planned robbery only one day in advance when Black Panthers contacted her and asked her to drive a U-haul vehicle for their planned get-away.She had almost no information, but had a babysitter for her child in day care and was free to say yes.And did.Her partner, the father of her child, was ready to go along. It seems she assumed it would come off without difficulty.Bad assumption. It seldom works that way with bank hold ups.A lot went wrong and many suffered terribly.Various thoughts come to mind: naive, clueless, irresponsible, stupid. She is not stupid and laments her action. It is easy to blame her and indeed it is hard not to.Two policemen and a Brinks guard were killed. To repeat she regrets her action. Her partner did the driving and is now doing 75 years in Attica.Boudin was unarmed and was not directly involved in the shooting. No matter. If you participate in a bank robbery you are guilty. It’s their judicial system - and ours.Witnesses contradicted one another but that often happens.Unsurprisingly, she was convicted. There was a plea bargain and she received twenty years to life. She spent twenty-two years in prison and unanswered questions about her story still circulate.Perhaps someone someday will do a biography.See The Record Monday for Part 2.Suffering from schizophrenia, Christian eft us on June 26, 201%, after many years of agony.Despite - my fit financial means; drew the ire and attention of the international media around the longstanding, oft-overlooked issue of ethnocentrism in the 21st century. In May 2013, Keith Henderson - a decades-long fixture in Canadian politics and literature - released The Roof Walkers [DC Books}, a historical fiction tour de force that not only promises to shed new light on one of the most important events in North America’s formation, but also provides keen allegory and insight into the fundamental damage that retrograde and divisive incidents like Quebec's “Pastagate” can wreak.Leader of the Equality Party of Canada (1993-2003) and chairman of the Special Committee for Canadian Unity, Henderson has long championed English-lan- guage rights in Quebec and throughout francophone Canada.A former columnist for The Financial Post, Henderson has been featured by 60 Minutes, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, BBC, CBC and more for his perceptive and thoughtful take on national identity and the domestic threats posed to it.“Ironically, Confederate Canada came into being fighting a violent, separatist, ethnocentric movement started by the Irish Republican Army - otherwise known as Fenians,” says Henderson.“The parallels between Ireland’s separatism and Quebec's are striking. And, if the separatists have their way, Canada may end up losing that unity that was established to another - the Parti Québécois.” Keith Henderson is the author of three novels and a prize-winning book of short stories. His debut novel, The Restoration, is one of the few literary looks Canada has at the 1980 Quebec referendum, about which The Globe and Mail wrote, “Henderson knows most intimately those parts of the Anglo-Quebec community who have been most abused by Canadian history.” Together with McGill University emeritus professor of constitutional law, Stephen Scott, Henderson contributed a series of political essays — many of which appeared in Canada’s Financial Post - FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 2013 In the coming months, it might not be such a bad idea to clear out any deadwood within your circle of friends, especially if there is a troublemaker among the group. It can result in happier relationships.GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — In matters of small consequence, you're not likely to pay much attention to the details, but if something is important, the opposite will be desire, and take practical measures to bring them about.SAGITTARIUS (Nov.23-Dec.21) — Even if your companions deem your plans overblown, don’t be afraid to think on a large scale. They're viewing the scenario from the wrong perspective.CAPRICORN (Dec.22-Jan.19) — If you're required to make a decision that involves an associate, take into account your personal opinion of this individual.Certain human factors can be very important.AQUARIUS (Jan.20-Feb.19) — Beneficial changes could be in the works for your job or day-to-day activities. However, you'll have to be observant in order to anticipate their direction.PISCES (Feb.20-March 20) — Something very advantageous could develop through a social contact. This person could turn out to be an enormously valuable ally.ARIES (March 21-April 19) — You might begin to appreciate something that you initially thought to be nothing but trouble. From this day forward, you'll see it in a totally different light.TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — You could be extremely lucky in an area of great importance, one in which you've rarely experienced good fortune in the past.Take advantage of this break.SUNDAY,
