September 27, and at that time the artists will be revealed and will sign their works on request.” “We're very pleased that Mark Patterson was able to set up the web site,” says Simon Page's Pizzeria owners welcome lower cheese prices By Stephen McDougall Special to The Record RICHMOND surprised but happy to learn they could soon see cheaper prices for the cheese they put on their pizzas.T= owners of popular pizzerias are “It will certainly help my bottom line: and allow me to offer more specials to customers,” said Marcel Neron, owner of Richmond Pizza.“We have been trying to hold down our prices, but the cost of cheese kept going up and eating into our profit. Now, we have some more leeway.” Rejean Lallier, co-owner of Pizza Plus in Danville, said the price reduction will help him compete against other restaurants that chose to reduce their use of cheese to keep their prices down.“We use a lot of quality cheese in our pizzas, but the price is higher,” he said.“I was not aware of this reduction, but if it comes soon, our restaurant may become more competitive on prices.” Neron and Lallier were surprised to learn that the Canadian Dairy commission had agreed earlier this month to reduce the price of milk needed to produce the special chesses such as mozzarella that make up many pizzas made in Canadian restaurants. This after years of lobbying by the Canadian Restaurant and Food Services association, which argued milk prices needed to come down at least 30 per cent to equal a similar discount long given to makers of Canadian frozen pizzas.“Qur members are finding it hard to compete against frozen pizzas because of the high price of cheese,” said Garth Whyte, head of the association, based in Toronto.“The restaurant owners are now calling the mozzarella cheese they put on their pizzas white gold.” The cheese prices - a 300-gram cheddar block regularly goes for $7 - are controlled by the high price for milk, which is its main ingredient. The milk prices are controlled by a rigid production quota system, with the retail price set by the federal dairy commission in Ottawa. The quota system was set up in Canada in the 1950s to protect small dairy farmers, most of them in Quebec and Ontario, from fluctuating milk prices that threatened their long-term revenue.Today, the number of dairy farms protected under the quota system is about 13,000.But the system has been criticized for eliminating competition and keeping milk prices too high for the average consumer.“More and more people today cannot afford to buy milk and cheese and other dairy products,” argued Whyte.Canadian cheese prices are also protected by a high import tariff of 246 per cent, which keeps lower priced alternatives from the U.S.and Europe out, according to the Conference board of Canada, an economic think tank. The change in milk prices for pizzerias was partly caused by a recent increase in foreign mozzarella cheese being imported to Canada. The cheese would bypass the tariff by being included in duty free packages of pepperoni sold to large pizzeria chains.Lallier said the cheese he buys from local supplier Chaudier costs $20 for a 2- kilogram package.“It is the highest cost I have to pay and the most expensive element of our pizzas.” Neron was not aware of the high taj- iff wall on imported cheese, but knew about the marketing boards that controlled the price of milk.“My brother is a farmer and he’s made a lot of money from the boards,” he said.“But that meant the rest of us paid a higher price for our milk and our cheese. It’s all about controlling the price, but it means I make a lot less money.” Neron said he uses on average 50 kilograms of cheese a week in the meals he serves. In the past three years, he said the price for cheese has doubled.“We had to increase the prices of our pizzas alone by about 15 per cent to help pay for those increases,” he said.“Now, I hope to hold the line on those prices and maybe offer some half price or two-for-one specials.” But the same price discount will not be offered to cheese buyers at grocery stores.Commission official Chantal Paul said it is difficult to roll back prices for store-bought cheese because the whole sale and retail prices are not regulated.“It is the milk that is regulated, not what is made from it,” she said from her Ottawa office.“It is up to the grocery markets to determine the cheese prices.” Pedophile fired as Magog firefighter Record Staff agog firefighter and convicted pedophile Bruno Henry has been formally dismissed from his duties as a part-time firefighter for the Town of Magog. The Magog Town Council adopted a resolution at its last meeting to break the employment relationship with the 53-year old following his conviction for criminal acts in connection with the possession and production of juvenile pornography. The former firefighter settled his accounts with the law on June 11.Henry was convicted for using three teenagers in sexual games he filmed between September 2009 and July 2012.’ Henry pleaded guilty to charges of production of child pornography, possession of child pornography, incitement to sexual contact while he was in a position of trust, and sexual touching.Held between the time of his arrest in July 2012 and its release in December, Henry will have to serve another 25 months in prison.Software installed on Henry's computer by an acquaintance led to the discovery of his crimes.Videos of victim impact statements and the search of computer equipment belonging to Henry were offered to support the evidence.Henry also pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and breach of conditions laid in early June.He was arrested after Venture capital gathering held in Sherbrooke SHERBROOKE leaders in the field of venture capital, at Investissement Desjardins-Innovatech).The topics of presentations covered all funding opportunities in venture capital, from pre-marketing to grand investment strategies.“Entrepreneurs are often in search of funding, whether for the commercial ization of a technology with great potential, the latest phases of research and development, a promising market penetration, or other growth-generating projects.Venture capital can be considered an interesting option that applies to any type of business.-An event such as this meets the needs of companies to help them position themselves in relation to venture capital and to find out whether this is an avenue to which they can go,” says Marie-France Audet, director of financial services at Sherbrooke Innopole.he encouraged his son to ask one of the victims not to testify against him.Following his arrest in July 2012, the Town of Magog had said it did not feel the need to suspend Henry since he was detained. After his release on conditions in December 2012, Henry was suspended without pay by the Mayor of Magog- Vicky May Hamm before the suspension was maintained by council. The human resources department of the Town of Magog told Henry somewhat of a misnomer, since it is expected that within a dozen years or so, it will be a net emitter of global warming emissions rather than a long term deposit bank. All the signals are clear, even deep below the frost line there are signs that something is wrong with the most fragile ecosystem on the planet. It is estimated by NASA that, just from the permafrost, we will probably face an additional 1,5 to 2 degrees of global warming before the year 2100.Add this to the already, taken for granted, 1,5 to 3 degree warming due to our rising emissions, and we have an envi- I: covers over a quarter of the ex- a ing giant ronmental nightmare in the making.Methane emissions over swamps have reached a level compared to large city levels. What is really scary is that there are historical references to stand by.This is not speculation from a ‘gang of gung-ho environmentalists.’ The scientists on the ground are comparing what they find to the information stored in the ice cores that give us a pretty exact picture of climate evolution over the last 600, 000 years. What they find does not compare with the patterns their empirical models teach them.NASA says that what they have observed is amazing and potentially troubling.Coming from very careful people when it comes to affirmations, I would say they are pushing the panic button. We have to keep in mind that methane is 22 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a global warming agent if you spread out the effects over a hundred years, but 105 times more damaging on a 200 year scale. What all this means is that as we reach the capacity of the oceans to absorb excess carbon, something will have to give somewhere. In preparing for the next United Nations Summit on climate change to be held in Warsaw from November 11 to 22, 1 have been catching up on reports of all sorts and even more on the pre- summit meetings.Again it could be a very frustrating two weeks come November, but there have been signs of progress. For one China and the USA have actually begun to get serious about capping their emissions.China is implementing a major carbon market aimed at constraining major emitters in their contribution to global warming. The United States have turned to natural gas from shale to reduce their emission related to coal used for the production of electricity. The contribution of coal to electric power has gone down in the US from over 45 per cent to under 35 per cent in less than ten years. This bodes well for serious major wording in the coming agreements on global warming. One thing is for sure, the Arctic will not get any colder for a long while, so we will have to compensate somewhere else for the rising methane emissions from up North. On a 200 year scale.' ) eu 1414 nue ' ER MA Still the songs are about situations that could happen to anyone, and many fans will be able to relate just the same.We have been waiting a long time to get some new original material from Rimes so here it is! “Spitfire” is a great song to start the album.Rimes obviously had a lot to say — so much so, she is spitting fire! The song is upbeat and includes some nice tongue- in-cheek and witty lyrics.“What Have I Done” is the current single and is absolutely heartbreaking. The song is an apology from a young woman who “broke the sweetest heart of the only man that's ever loved her.” This number will remain a favourite on the album. On “Gasoline and Matches,” Rimes pairs up with Rob Thomas and Jeff Beck.Thomas and Rimes complement each other beautifully. The least we can say is what an interesting choice in track listing position! After the apology of “What Have I Done," this rocking number is about how dangerous and hot it can be to mix gasoline and matches.Jeff Beck does some great guitar work here! “Borrowed” is powerfully heartbreaking. The song is about a woman in love with another woman's man.She borrows him and hates herself for it, but doesn’t want to give him back.LEANN «RIME COUNTRY CONNECTION JESSIE AULIS en LeAnn Rimes first debuted at 13, the Wee she sang were far above and beyond the understanding of such a young artist, though the impressive nature of her voice overshadowed that. Now, there's a new album and after having: lived through some very public hard times (divorce and falling in love with a married man) she co-writes songs that are some of the most honest lyrics to be featured on a country album. We've seen what happens to women in country who make bold statements (The Dixie Chicks, Chely Wright), yet Rimes still wears her heart on her sleeve in such a soul-baring way, that it is truly i impressive and admirable. Many people will be quick to judge and dismiss this album because of her personal life as if they've never made a mistake or hurt someone else, but they don’t have the courage that the singer does to honestly and openly talk about it.This album is a testament to her artistry, and hope- On “You Ain” t Right" there is this unhappy house wife who has some things to say to her man.The song offers very witty lyrics. The ultra country sound is a fun change at this point in the album as well.“Where I Stood” is a cover song done to perfection. The song mixes well with the others on this album and was expertly countrified.Rimes, continues to deliver well.Brace yourself and get ready for banjo and steel guitar on the great and upbeat “Bottle.” The lyrics are a little cliché and a little overly merry, but the song is CONT'D ON PAGE 17 Your week on TV WEEKDAY MORNING Cit J Rachael Ray WCAX EB) - - News CBS This Morning Dr.Phil The Price Is Right WPTZ 8 - - Newschannel 5 Today at 6AM___ Today Live!
