The Record | newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2013 Page 9 >olumnis \u20ac DISHPAN HANDS SHEILA QUINN weeks of summer mark five years of Dishpan Hands.For five years you, readers of The Record, have been a mostly unseen force in my life.Your impact can be listed, fairly easily.1) You've changed my name.When the DH column became the DH radio show on CJMQ, my alter ego, Sheila Q.was born.Wait.Alter ego?I think she\u2019s mostly me.I guess my ego was born.Well, I'm pretty sure I already had an ego, so how about we agree that it morphed.No matter how you look at it, there was a change.Sheila isn\u2019t exactly a name with a plethora of nicknames, like Catherine and Elizabeth, so this is pretty special.2) A week goes by quickly.With deadlines looming, the DH column has meant that I have tended to go out and explore just a little more.l\u2019ve felt a certain duty to report back.Some things I did share, some I didn\u2019t.3) I'm so grateful for the credibility writing for The Record has meant.Working for an historical institution like The Record, with a great team of hardworking people who believe in information sharing, has meant that I have had the opportunity to interview, meet and share with many people I wouldn't have otherwise been able to.Yup, you guys give me cred.4) I owe a debt of gratitude to many of the subjects of DH, who've been generous with time, details and their intimate dreams, projects, experiences, pain, blood, sweat and tears.I'm not a huge H-* anniversary to us! Here's Sheila Q.with her son Angus, at last weekend\u2019s Shazamfest event in West Barnston.fan of gossip, but I really love storytelling - so I've had the chance to hear an awful lot of great tales, straight from the horse's mouth.5) You've been a super duper outlet for the observations on family, friends, and life experiences.Acquaintances often quip with a chuckle that they don\u2019t need to ask me how it\u2019s going, because they \u201calready know.\u201d Funny that.Would you like a martini with that tip of the iceberg you have there?I kid.6) Inversely, I'm fairly certain most of my family and friends are wary that I'll overshare details, but they don\u2019t complain or warn me.all that much.Thanks for being such interesting subjects.I'm beginning to doubt, or at least rethink, the concept of the \u201cordinary.\u201d 7) DH has allowed me to share with you the adventures of parenting, especially the challenges of raising a child with autism.The network of people I've been able to shine a light on in celebration of their everyday heroism has been a treasure.Celebrating people is important.Learning about people is important.8) Your mum should be your number one fan.The last five years has really been an important parenting segment of my life, and I'm my kids\u2019 number one fan too.Just excited enough to make them think before they act (for fear that I'll embarrass them), and just a notch or two under the crazy they think I am.My mother is the most sensible crazy person I've ever met.Thanks Mum, for putting up with my crazy being just a scosche more on the outside.Just a scosche.9) When an important romantic force came into my life, I didn\u2019t really share it.I just acted like it was natural that he was there.As a result, unseen to you most of the time, is the support of my partner in life, Stephane Bessette, who shared a secret dream of a media life that would compliment his business life, as a third generation entrepreneur in the plumbing business.He\u2019s behind the scenes of Dishpan Hands, on the air with DH Radio, and co-hosts and co-produces DHTV's Les Curieux, our YouTube channel.He\u2019s so smart and cool, it\u2019s ridiculous.The motivation of DH has taken us across the country with our family to film a web spot for Subaru, it\u2019s given us a personal view of many businesses, we are invited to countless events, and attend and encourage as many as we can.10) DH has been a fiery network in the world of all things Eastern Townships.Have you guys noticed what an amazing place we live in?So much is going on! So many people are working so hard to bring arts, entertainment, sports, education, work and just plain interesting things to us.Start paying attention to those show posters, those event invitations, those fundraisers, those tried and true predictable marks on the calendar.Get out there and support our event planners and business owners.Think about breaking the habit of pouring energy and resources into the \u201cbig\u201d businesses, and support our local people.Let\u2019s leave that list at ten.It would be normal to think that there is such a thing as small media.except that that\u2019s no longer the case.The ability to share information, news, findings, stories, photos, videos, is overwhelming at times, and can seem scary, but it\u2019s also got to be one of the most fantastic things in the present day.We can reach out and connect, learn and share.How: else would I have found out in about one minute of searching on the Net that the strange little creature I observed for some time hovering around the garden centre in Foster was a hummingbird moth?!
