They came to this area when there was nothing but woods and more woods. They often were young, somewhat idealistic and brought a young wife for whom they had to provide. They must have been overflowing with self confidence. They started out from scratch, cut down trees, turned them into lumber, built a house, and elementary furniture. At the same time they were planting food for winter, learning to milk, to hew, to dig and scratch, to train their team, be it oxen or horses and, if the harness or harrow broke, they had to fix it.There were very few blacksmiths so.they were it.Even today most farmers are jacks of all trades.Unlike city-born folk, farmers seem to have an instinctive confidence that they can do most anything.” He attended Iron Hill Consolidated School from 1932 until 1939 and enjoyed catching up on news of former teachers Cecil Blenkhorn.and the Sherbrooke Snow Shoe club as other examples of community initiatives that his father chose to get involved with.“He could penny pinch for himself,” asek said, “but he always wanted to make sure that those who were less fortunate had something to make things and classmates and reminiscing about ‘old times.” But he was not locked in the past and was captivated by the promise of young people today. After attending an awards ceremony at the local high school, he wrote: When you meet any, student at Galt, stop them and commend them on their choice of schools, encourage all students to stay in school and to do their best in whatever they do.I listen to the radio and hear how terrible our young people are acting.Guns in schools, expulsion for talking back, murder, even teachers who abuse their privileges.Tonight the auditorium was filled with anxious students and prideful parents and friends. The evening was to honour those students who had excelled in either given subjects or in their overall accomplishments over the years they had attended Galt.If I was expecting only a few students, I was pleasantly surprised. There were hundreds, and they were mostly receiving awards.I really want you to join me in congratulating these future leaders.Cecil Blenkhorn worked at Ingersoll Rand for 46 years and one of the highlights after retiring was a reunion with former employees and to recall and share the names of old acquaintances who were no longer among them: “Ted Harbert, Bert Noble, Gil Young.Chas.NOTICE OF MEETING Ayer’s Cliff - Nick Fonda Record Correspondent rian and Michel will tell you that it took the better part of six years to meet the first challenge, but now that it has been successfully met, they're looking ahead with eagerness and optimism to the next phase of their project.Brian IHick and Michel Dajenais are the co-owners of Les Vallons de Wadleigh, Ulverton’s nascent vineyard and winery, located on Highway 143 at the south end of one of the Eastern Township’s most charming villages.“We opened officially on June 13 with a small event for family and friends. Then on June 24 we hosted an open house for the village and the municipality,” says Drummondville-born Brian Il- lick.“There was a good turnout on the 24th; a lot of people came by and stayed for a glass of wine and hot ribs from the barbeque.” “We were hit by a sudden cloudburst at one point, so we moved the party in here,” says Michel Dajenais indicating the brightly-lit, and highly-polished boutique. In a previous incarnation, the building had been his sheep barn.Standing in the reception area, visitors can see, behind a glass wall, five small oak casks. Each is filled with 1,500 litres of wine which will age for some time yet before being bottled.Beyond the dimly-lit, glass-walled room with the casks is another much larger space with half a dozen large stainless steel vats; these have a capacity of 13,000 litres each. The only thing the two spaces have in common is that they are scrubbed as clean as a hospital operating theatre. The two rooms reflect that winemaking is one of the most ancient of agricultural pursuits but that this is the 21st century and the fruits of technology cannot be denied. For Michel and Brian, the first challenge was to create a good wine. They started six years ago when they planted three and a half acres of rolling hayfields with young vines. This year’s harvest was their third, and 2013 is the first year that bottles of Les Vallons de Wadleigh were sold to the public. The two co-owners are bound to have proprietary prejudices, but they are both oenophiles—lovers of wine— and Brian has trained as a sommelier.Their own assessment of their wine was pleasing. It was good. And their judgement was confirmed.“We're very pleased with the response that the wines have received,” says Brian.“The wines tasted good to us and they have proved popular, and that is true of all four of the wines that we produce: a white, arosé, a slightly fruity red and a more robust red.Next year we might have an ice wine available but if so, we’ll be making only a very small quantity.Making ice wine requires seven times the quantity of grapes which, prior to being crushed, must experience temperatures of minus ten Celsius for at least four consecutive days.” GLIMPSES OF THE PAST Ivan Boisvert nds.La Socié istoire de Sherbrooke The cenotaph was officially inaugurated on November 7, 1926.The work of Mon- than we had expected,” Michel adds.“We had a relatively small but fairly steady flow of visitors over the summer. Some were tourists driving the Townships Trail, or the Circuit des Bocages, or the Route des Vins de I'Estrie. We had people from Drummondville and Sherbrooke and people from the immediate area. What was pleasing was that we had quite a few people return more than once to buy a few extra bottles of wine. The other gratifying development is that two local restaurants have just started carrying our wine: A la Bonne Vétre in Drum- mondville which promotes a’ terroire cuisine, and the Restaurant de la Gare in Richmond. The wine is also served at the supper concerts hosted at Jardins Lumières.” Les Vallons de Wadleigh—named for one of the hamlet’s early settlers—is now closed for the winter season, but from June 24 till Thanksgiving, it was open daily from Thursday to Sunday, from 10 a.m.till 5 p.m.Over the course of three and a half months, the winery sold over 80 per cent of its first vintage.“We had some 6,000 bottles,” said Brian, “roughly an equal number of white, rosé and red.The white and the rosé are both completely sold out and we have less than a thousand bottles of red left. We'll have about twice as many bottles on our shelves next year, and our annual production is going to stabilize at 16 000 bottles per year.” Much has changed since the summer of 2008 when they planted some 10,000 young vines. These were hardy, northern varieties: Marquette, Radisson and red, white and grey varieties of Frontenac. All had been developed at the University "of Minnesota. Now, they have some 10 acres of bucolic, rolling countryside under cultivation. They have three seasonal employees who work full time for approximately half the year. They also consult very regularly with both an agronomist who advises them on things like soil acidity and pest control, and an oenologist, Jean-Paul Martin, who has 30 years of wine making experience and who advises them on everything from fermentation to bottling.Near the winery is a 19th century farmhouse, entirely refurbished and with a fully equipped kitchen, that is available to groups for family or business functions.Despite the hired help, Michel and ’ Brian are hands-on owners and they do a lot of the work themselves.Brian jokes about the sunburn and the sore back, but his voice grows increasingly sober as he lists the tasks involved.“We have to deal with all the jobs ending in ‘ing’,” he says, and then rattles them off: “pre-pruning, pruning, trimming, mowing, spraying, leafing, netting, harvesting, wine-making, aging, testing, cleaning.Especially cleaning. The entire building is scrubbed virtually every day.” Growing grapes is a labour-intensive task.Consider for a moment the problem of trellises.Grape vines are climbing plants and spread at a prodigious rate.To maximize growing conditions and to facilitate harvesting, grapes are always provided with a trellis on which to grow.At the Wadleigh vineyard the trellises are a simple structure consisting of steel posts set at six-yard intervals on which wires are strung, much like a fence. It’s a simple, straightforward system. However, the vineyard has 100 km of wires and the entire length of wire has to be re-set three times over the course of the growing season.Mowing is a weekly task.Pest control means dealing with the scarab beetle in the spring and keeping a watchful eye the rest of the time; the Wadleigh vineyard is not organic but is eco-friendly.Frost warnings are heeded and a drip- style sprinkler system is activated to protect the plants.Birds are a threat to a grape harvest and covering ten acres of vineyards with netting is no small job.Still, despite the callused hands, sore backs and sunburn, Michel and Brian are smiling as they look ahead. The boutique leads through a set of doors to a large outdoor terraced area. The two partners are considering enclosing the area to make a three-season terrasse equipped with a small barbecue cooking range. They are planning as well to lay out several kilometres of walking trails, along the vineyard and to the Ul- verton River which flows through a corner of the property. In particular, they are turning their attention to the marketing of the Wadleigh brand.“The first thing, the most essential thing was to make a good bottle of wine,” Brian says.“We've done that.At $16 per bottle the wine is very palatable and entirely affordable.” “But our advertising was almost entirely by word-of-mouth,” continues Michel.“We were in one brochure put out by the Route des Vins de l’Estrie, and we are on the Bocage map, but otherwise we didn’t do any advertising or promotion at all. That's what were going to be looking at over the winter.” One of the challenges for Les Vallons de Wadleigh, as for all Quebec vintners, is convincing the Société des Alcools du Québec to carry local wines.Just procuring a license to sell their own wine took the Ulverton wine-makers over 12 months.“We're very pleased,” Brian says.“We hope to reach the break even point with respect to operating expenses next year.It will take quite a while longer to recover our investment, but we're doing this hecause wine happens to be our passion. It’s a labour of love.” For more information go to the vineyard’s web site: www.lesvallonsde- wadleigh.ca. “The Record h.IITORIAL E H ealth costs are soaring and economic growth or not, at some point brown air will need to give way to blue skies.Climate change: The Warsaw connection By Francois Tanguay T= annual meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19) to the United-Nations Convention on climate change is underway in Warsaw, Poland. Two weeks will be spent at seeking some sort of consensus on what to agree to in two years in Paris.Nothing definite will come out of this meeting for many reasons, mainly because the bigger delegations, the US, China and the European Union just cannot agree on anything. The US and China are the two largest emitters of greenhouse gases (GHG) and neither has committed to specific numbers with regards to reducing their contribution to global warming. The US never signed in to the Kyoto Protocol to begin with and China has consistently refused to agree to be checked by a third party with regards to any commitment in reducing its emissions. It has been agreed in past meetings, in particular in Durban (South Africa) two years ago, that by 2015 a new full blown version of the Kyoto Protocol would have to be voted in.This time, all the payers would have to commit to binding reduction goals, including the poorer nations that have been exempt so far because of their lesser contribution to global warming. One thing everyone agrees to is that some serious reductions in GHG has to be undertaken and even 2015 is too late according to the science community. The real risk is that the Warsaw meeting this year and the Lima COP 20 encounter next year do not result sufficient progress for the Paris meeting to become the major turning point it must be.The Internation Energy Agency (IEA) came up this week with its annual World Energy Outlook (2013) and if anything, leaders should be aware where fossil fuel consumption is heading. The numbers point to a continued rise in overall use of oil, coal and natural gas combined, with some hopeful news blended in for good measure. The IEA is no second rate outfit and is considered the best and most reliable source of energy information in the world. The IEA is a 28 member organization, all of them rich nations. So its interests is in representing the members first and foremost by assuring them a secure energy environment. The Big Boys have their own agenda as a priority, but in fact the IEA has consistently come up with reports that point to a need for drastic action to a reduced use of fossil fuels. The IEA even goes so far as to plead for a price on carbon, a gradual end to subsidies to oil and gas production and the promotion of renewable energy. One has to wonder what the Harper government, a card carrying member, the only country to have opted out of the Kyoto Protocol, thinks of that.In this week’s report and analysis of the global energy outlook for the next twenty years the IEA recalls it identified in a June paper four pragmatic measures that could contribute on a short term basis to reducing GHG, measures that would not affect actual economic growth.More energy efficiency, a reduction in methane emissions from both the oil and gas industries, a limit on the use of inefficient coal fired power plants and a serious reform of subsidies to fossil fuels.Keep this number in ] mind: for every subsidy dollar the wind and solar sector gets, the fossil sector gets five! So as you see, the Warsaw meeting will have little effect on the major players. But, rest assured that in the short term, between now and the Paris meeting in November 2015, a lot of behind the door hard talk will happen.China, for example, has already become the leading world producer and user of renewable energy and has made all the right moves toward reducing coal use.The air in Beijing has been unbreath- able long enough.Health costs are soaring and economic growth or not, at some point brown air will need to give way to blue skies. The Americans are closing down coal plants fast and replacing them with much more efficient high performance gas plants. Both are ready.to take the leading role they are expected to take.So this is why no one expects anything significant from the Warsaw meeting.Hopefully the best is yet to come.in Paris! Run away!” This last title seems strangely appropriate no matter what one’s perspective is on the thing.I think it should be called, the “Charter for keeping a lid on religion by banning religious lids.” That’s what it is all about, it seems. It won’t change the nature of government services nor will it cut down on religious conversions.I doubt many Quebecers have ever converted merely by seeing the fetching garb we associate with religious convictions. It won't contribute to the equality of women. We already have laws I= been titled, “Charter af- about this important value. In fact, it rather paternalistically assumes that any woman who is wearing a head scarf could not have done so by her own free will.In effect the bill says that any Jew, Sikh or Muslim can work for a government body or a body contracted by government as long as he or she don’t look like one, act like one, eat like one or observe religious holidays without government permission. As long as one’s religious faith remains safe and secure in the confines of sentiment, private ritual and unspoken opinion where no one else has to see it or hear about it Quebec will be happy. If you are ok with this rule then you can apply for work in government offices, transit systems and pub- lically sponsored day cares. The bill also assumes that such notorious garb is mere “symbol” like a Rotary lapel pin or Habs tuque. This betrays either a gross ignorance of religious commitment or a deliberate effort to exclude certain religious practitioners. One of these ideas is stupid and the other is bigoted. These are symbols, indeed, but symbols can carry with them great significance.Ask a lawyer how important her robe is or a police officer her badge and admit how important such symbols are in practicing their profession.Religious profession includes symbols as well.It would be good for many of the supporters of this bill to admit something lurking in the depths - fear of religion. We acknowledge that many have had histories of hurt and abuse at the hands of religious authbori- ties.Stories are told of the inordinate control over private lives that the Catholic Church once had in Quebec. We also agree that there are situations where people in the name of their god abuse and enslave women and exact cruel punishment on those who have other religious convictions. The interesting thing is that many of the people who have immigrated to Quebec with their religious convictions and garb did so because of the liberties we have and a desire to escape the evil repression of their homeland. So, having escaped oppression in one place they find a kind of oppression here.If fear is the true motive of Bill 60 supporters it seems counselling would be appropriate and it would save us all a lot of headaches if they would get some. For those of us whose religious commitments must be public but don’t involve wearing certain head covering we see this bill as an attack against our personal and religious liberties as well.It is a bill that says Christians can apply and work in State-related jobs as long as we don’t look like one, act like one, eat like one or observe religious holidays without government permission. For people who track religious liberty and persecution in the world this bill is ominous. In many nations religious faith that is not shared by the State is seen to be a threat. This is happening both in atheistic states as well as theocratic ones.More Christians along with other religious minorities are imprisoned, oppressed or killed for their faith today than at any time in history.Religious liberty in a Free State has been a hard won freedom along with our learning true tolerance - the kind that tolerates people whose faith is different from ours.Strangely we are enacting laws to tolerate certain lifestyle choices and making accommodation to them at a time when the alternate lifestyle of religious faith could be limited by an intolerant State. What is more, Her Royal Blueness Pauline Marois can’t do this alone like some Third World dictator but there are many Quebecers who are prepared to go along under the guise of being serene and reasonable. There is something that smells a little like evil in the air.In April 1933, two months after Hitler attained power, “The law for the restoration of the professional civil service” came into effect. This was a law to exclude Jews from working in the civil service with certain accommodations being made for a few exceptional cases. The effect of this spread into the schools as well so that Jews were relegated to servile conditions. Many fled at this time including Albert Einstein as it manifested an ongoing dark anti-Semitism.Justifying this action was the aim to regain a pure Aryan race and safeguard it against what was thought to be undesirable contamination due to the presence of Jews and other unwanted peoples.Quebec doesn’t seem to want a final solution - it would be ridiculous to take this parallel very far.Neither do I wish to dishonour the millions who suffered at Hitler’s hand and whose families continue to do so.However, can we not see that there is something ugly giving legitimacy to Bill 60?There is a willingness to suppress the rights of other citizens to protect one’s own personal space because of fear. There is a willingness to use government coercive powers to do so.Bill 60 is prepared to grossly diminish some people’s personal liberties and dignity for the cause of the majority race.“Accommodation.” What a nice word.It sounds like a warm chalet-in the Lauren- tians. It sounds so friendly and noble. For we who are religious minorities it doesn’t sound either reasonable or accommodating, however, when it comes to this bill. This is a bill seeking assimilation motivated by fear.Let’s call it what it is.Tomas Jensen brings a final decisions about lighting are made by Transport Canada.Bell representatives make a suggestion on an aeronautical assessment form, but ultimately, the intensity of the light, its positioning, and whether or not it will flash, is decided by Transport Canada.Austin council is concerned about approving plans for a tower in their area, even if they request little or no lighting.“We don’t know what the final decision will be,”Ménard said.Ménard mentioned that the Bell representative dealing with their district didn’t understand why Ogden’s tower required such intense lighting, since it is in a valley with no airport nearby.Ogden’s Bell representative, according to Monique Pepin, is away on vacation until Now.23.“They should have gone through a stricter process,” said Ménard, regarding Ogden’s quick approval of the tower without considering the impact on surrounding areas.“They probably didn’t know.” Ménard is concerned that people in Austin and Potton feel they have no recourse because the tower is in another town.Former Potton Mayor, Jacques Marcoux, was aware of the situation, but was replaced recently by Louis Veillon, who is likely unfamiliar with the problem.“People don’t know that they can go to their town hall,”Ménard said, adding, “I think this should be brought to the MRC level.” The Ogden Bell cellular tower is on the property of Dale Rediker. He was approached last winter, and agreed to lease the land to Bell. The tower is 300 feet high.“This wasn’t done in five seconds, “Rediker said, “it took three months.” Rediker said notices were placed in local papers, and residents within a certain distance of the proposed tower were sent a “the one on Owl's Head flashes into a few windows too.™ Rediker has not been approached by neighbours regarding the tower.People in the immediate surroundings are, because of the height of the tower, unaffected. The light impacts homes at a higher elevation. The Record - contacted Transport Canada to learn more about tower lighting requirements.Spokesperson Josianne Martel explained that the light ing is necessary to meet regulations.“The department has verified the total height of the cell phone tower in Ogden in relation to the average sea level, its geographic position, and surrounding airways. Therefore, Transport Canada has required lighting and painting for this cell phone tower given that the height of this tower is 97 metres,” Martel said, adding "A flashing red light at the top of the tower is required to satisfy the night marking standard of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CAR).” Martel went on to say that because of the height of the tower, the company may choose to replace the painting requirement by flashing medium intensity white lights to meet the day marking standards.According to Martel, no complaints regarding the cell tower in Ogden have been made to Transport Canada. So he goes back in time to fix his mess.Captain Underpants goes too, as do the fingersnappers, Harold and George, who always manage to get their principal switcherooed just in time for the save.In this tome, a time travel chase of À Star Trekkian complexity takes place, involving cave people, dinosaurs, and the dawn of the universe.Wowsa.Captain Underpants is always a crowd-pleaser.There's lots more in New Arrivals for kids.Tibere Et Trouscaillon, by Laurent Chabin (2000, yellow dot), introduces the quiet philosopher Tibere, blue with white whiskers and green eyes.Pierrot is his human, one who very much loves the big fat lazy feline.Tibere ignores the demands of Pierrot’'s parents, who want a proper mouser.(Mice, thinks Tibere, are cute and adorable and deserve nothing but happy snores and snuggling.) And all is well until a very nasty rat moves in, Trouscaillon. It’s up to Tibere to rid the neighbourhood of this vicious fiend. And Tibere does so while maintaining his principles. This is a fun 60-pager that adults will also enjoy reading to kids. For something a little wackier and more hectic, there’s Muncle Trogg (by > | Janet Foxley, 2011, orange dot, suggested age 9 to 12).Most giants are this tall: T.But Muncle is only this tall: —.He's really quite bitty; so bitty his brother loves to hold him upside down, and.drop him.Luckily, Muncle’s nimble enough to land on his feet. And for all his faults Muncle is, at least, pretty: Hairy, warty, big nosed, over-long arms.Still, because of his size, he might pass as a Smalling — those are the little people with well-proportioned limbs and clear skin who live in the big city down beyond the forest. The humans pushed the giants into hiding inside a mountain hundreds of years ago, and the giants still live in fear of them.Nonetheless, Muncle decides to visit the enemy. And his voyage leads to a panic in the land of the giants! “This is a very busy book (lots of pictures!) that’s a fast read. Here’s one last New Arrival: Freaks, by Kieran Larwood (2012, orange dot), is the story of Sheba the wolf girl, a freak in a sideshow in England in 1851.She shares a shack with a two-headed lamb and a stuffed squirrel-mermaid.Hey, it’s a living. She’s 10 years old, and happy to be able to eat (every so often).Sheba and the lamb are soon sold to a London-based freakshow owner, and for the first time, ever, she meets and makes friends of the human(ish) kind. There’s Find the right Ÿ Ee SEE WONDERFUL ARTISTS AT CENTENNIAL THEATRE IN 2013-2014 MARTHA WAINWRIGHT VIEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20TH.§ PM JESSE COOK SIBOIRE WWW.CENTENNIALTHEATRE.CA 819 822-9692 THURSBAY, NOVEMBER Z81H, 8 PM ied 0 person for the job in advertising in our Career Section Many Record readers want a career change and are looking for a new job.Shouldn’t your ad be in The Record’s Carcer Section? For reservations or further information, please call fami er ao RECORD I 819-569-0525 cat-ninja Sister Moon, strongman Gigan- tus, Mama Rat and her little furry darlings, and Monkeyboy, a little guy with a big mouth and stinky airs.Really stinky. This group of earnest odd balls are asked to find a lost child, and they become wandering gumshoes, accidentally stumbling into a complex plot that they know must be stopped. And in the meantime, Sheba discovers a little bit about herself and her past. The November chill encourages a snuggle and a book.Happy reading! books.“The Hog Takes to Precision” came out in 2011, “Diamonds Are the Hog’s Best Friend” appeared this year, and stay tuned for the other two.All are published by Master Point Press. The Rueful Rabbit is a poor player who always lands on his feet. This deal is a typical example.North has a problem over two no-trump.He might pass; or he could respond three clubs, Stayman, planning on either bidding four hearts if a 44 fit is disclosed, or settling for three no- trump and hoping the diamonds run.In this auction, North-South had agreed to use transfer bids, but North forgot. So he assumed South’s three-heart rebid indicated length in that suit.Against four hearts, West led the spade king (luckily not a trump). The Rueful Rabbit ruffed in the dummy, played a diamond to his ace, trumped another spade, returned to the diamond king, ruffed a third spade, and took two club tricks ending on the board. After a brief pause, R.R.trumped a diamond with his heart jack.West had to discard a spade. Then a fourth spade ruff was followed by another diamond. With this coup en passant, East could not stop South from scoring his heart king.Four hearts bid and made!
