to typ NS GORDO LAMBIE e Canadian Government recalled its Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) from the Philippines on Monday stating that the team had completed its humanitarian assistance mission, but according to Sally Carilio there is still much work to be done.Carillo, now a Townshipper, grew up in the Filipino Province of Aklan, and is in the process of raising funds to support young families in the region as they struggle to rebuild.“I'm doing fundraising because it is a long-term recovery,” Carillo said.“I cried for two days after the typhoon; I felt like I had to do something.” The Filipino Canadian expressed that she started to raise funds for the people of Aklan specifically because of the disconnect she felt between giving to larger aid organizations while hearing about minimal relief from her family and friends. She pointed out that aid organizations like the Canadian Red Cross are helping, but they are focusing their efforts in Tacloban City right now, meaning that many of those with their lives turned upside down in other parts of the country are left to their own devices.“Of course I don’t have a problem with aid being sent to Tacloban,” Carillo said, “because there really is a need, but I also want to help my hometown.” Aklan is a province of approximately 1,800 square kilometres in the middle of the Philippine Archipelago, and is composed of 17 municipalities making up about half a million people.According to the local Provincial Government, the area suffered more than 2.67 billion Filipino Pesos (roughly $64 million CDN) in damages from the initial onslaught of the typhoon. The damage, says Carillo, manifests in massive crop and livestock losses in what is mostly an agricultural area, as well as destruction of the homes of 81,786 families or 383,488 people. The death count in the region as a result of the typhoon has reached 14.“Close to 80 per cent of the houses were either partially or completely destroyed,” Carillo shared, expressing that it was those who were poorest who were the hardest hit.She explained that with everybody looking to rebuild, many are calling on their families around the world for added support, but she assured that she has already taken care of her family’s need. This initiative, according to her, is for those who have no PH hoon relief A small area devastated by Typhoon Haiyan lays in the province of Capiz, Philippines on November 24, 2013.one to turn to and need the added support, with a specific focus on providing housing for families with young kids.“(Recovery) is a long-term process,” Carillo said.“I'm not giving them a mansion or something like that, just a home.” “The typhoon left the survivors hungry, as 95 per cent of our crops were destroyed,” she continued, expressing that she has heard of two separate relief shipments that have arrived, allowing up to 9,000 people to be fed “People of Aklan are hungry but they help each other; at this point they are happy and can live with only rice and salt or a little sugar on their plate.I helped my own family and so do others who have family and friends abroad, however, there are many very unfortunate families who have no family or friends abroad.” To help underline the legitimacy of her fundraiser, the concerned Filipino-Canadian is having donations managed by the Aklan Association of Montreal (AAM).The AAM also worked to provide support in the region after Typhoon Frank in 2008, helping 600 individuals and 53 families to receive food and medical care.Carillo encouraged those interested in helping her support her community to send a cheque, payable to the Aklan Association of Montreal to 419 Principale, Cowansville, QC J2K 1J4; or 399 Knowlton road, Knowlton, QC J2K 1V0.While Carillo’s AAM is not a registered Canadian charity, many such organizations are continuing to collect funds for typhoon relief as well. For every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charities for Typhoon Haiyan relief until December 23, this coming Monday, the Federal Government will set aside one dollar for its Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund. The government has then vowed to use the relief fund to provide assistance through established channels and procedures with international and Canadian humanitarian organizations. To be counted for the purposes of the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund, donations from individual Canadians may not exceed $100,000 per individual and must be: monetary in nature; made to a registered Canadian charity that is receiving donations in response to the impact of Typhoon Haiyan; specifically earmarked for response to Typhoon Haiyan; and made by December 23, 2013.The government is reporting $35 million donated to registered Canadian Charities so far.Typhoon Haiyan, also called Yolanda, struck the Philippines on Friday, Nov.8, 2013, causing massive destruction and loss of life in the country’s central region. The national death toll has officially climbed past 6,000 people, with a large number of injuries and destruction of property and infrastructure existing beyond that.Approximately 11.3 million people are thought to have been affected by the storm within the country itself. No progress yet in East Angus mill talks The Businesses along the railroad say the service is vital for the town economy. The first train arrived at the Tafisa Canada plant in the town's industrial park to pick up a load of particle board. While it was there, tests were carried out to ensure signals were functioning properly on its route out, which took it through the centre of the town. The train Headed to Sherbrooke after leaving the Tafisa factory. The gradual return of freight trains to Lac-Megantic must follow strict rules and conditions. For now, no dangerous substances will be transported through the town.Transport Canada has placed several conditions on the operator before the trains returned to Lac-Megantic, including the obligation for trains to slow down and make full stops at certain crossings. In some cases, locomotive employees will have to get out and check the crossing manually to make sure everything is safe and secure. The speed limit will be 16 km/h on certain parts of the track. No sign of missing Magog man z= Police have searched throughout the “Memphremagog MRC but have concen- Record Staff MAGOG arc Patenaude, 56, was last seen Monday, December 9.Documents he left for his family have led to concern for his safety.trated their efforts around Sainte- Catherine-de-Hatley where a communications tower last picked up a signal from the missing man’s cell phone.Police have patrolled the streets and roads, used ATVs to search isolated areas but have found no trace of the man or his vehicle.Police in Sherbrooke and the Sûreté du Québec have also been on the lookout.ACTE names Gerard Langlois as 2014 spokesperson SHERBROOKE T= Estrie Association of Stroke and Brain Trauma Victims (ACTE) has announced the appointment of Eric-G.Langlois as spokesperson for 2014.Langlois, an actor/comedian and radio-host at CFLX, will be particularly active on behalf of projects that involve awareness of aphasia.Langlois is a native Townshipper originally from Magog, but now residing in Sherbrooke, is a multidisciplinary artist, recognized for his work on the radio, on stage both as actor and musician, and public speaker. As a professional communicator, he is acutely aware of the dif ficulties faced by those afflicted with aphasia, described as a disturbance of the comprehension and formulation of language caused by dysfunction in specific brain regions. To help create awareness of the reality of life for those living with aphasia, a number of public awareness events are planned for the coming year, which marks the 30th anniversary of the organization. The major event will be the multi-art show taking place during Quebec Aphasia Awareness Week, 26 May 26- June 1.The line-up for this event will be announced later.' off-colour remarks, cornering the hostess who's giving off ambiguous signals, losing your pants, losing your pants again, falling into actual pits. There’s no shortage of advice on how to handle occasional flagrant bum fondling, depending on the nature of the guests and whether they've had pre-party cocktails. The bottlenecking is caused by guests having to remove their footwear in the foyer.Coincidentally, “Footwear in the Foyer” was a song by Barry “Brakelight” Robinson that reached No.14 on the R&B charts in 1958.This has nothing to do with the topic at hand, but barring anything else useful in this article, you will at least have this piece of trivia to take away.I don’t particularly care about the tumbling and the bottlenecking because there's really no avoiding it, plus the occasional flagrant bum fondling can be quite bracing. What happens after the boots come off is where things get tricky. This is when you have to ask yourself: Am SHARON will remain comfortable even after you traipse through the slush that all the bottlenecking and bum fondling has left at the front door.Avoid Hello Kitty socks, even if your wife insists you wear them. If, on the other hand, you're a slipper person, no need to worry about anyone giving you ambiguous signals because slippers are the least sexy of all the footwear.Your feet, on the other hand, will be warm and dry.So slippers, no slippers, the choice is yours. If you're over 45, however, the choice is pretty much a foregone conclusion. The second type of Christmas party is the posh public party, or PPP.In this case, the risk of tumbling and bottlenecking is far lower due to the presence of a coatroom and heavily insured objets d'art, which is French for “breakable.” My wife and I were at one such PPP last week where (as Brakelight Robinson sang in his non-charting follow-up) I abandoned my boots in the vestibule. It was the kind of soirée that had bacon-wrapped hotdogs and bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, so you knew it wasn’t a slipper crowd. No, sir, there would be no bum fondling at this party, or if there was it would be highly discreet and later covered up.I felt pretty confident in my sock choice - classic, hole-less, good grip to prevent me from objet-d’arting anything — so in I went.Shoes! All the other guests were wearing shoes, which could mean only one of two things: the guests had brought their shoes and changed into them; or they had worn overshoes, also known as rubbers, which I neither like to wear nor am able to say in mixed company.I couldn’t enjoy the PPP because I was so conscious of my sock feet.None of the guests said anything, because that’s the kind of classy crowd it was, but you could tell when they said “pigs in blankets” that they were talking about my feet. What's worse, we were two of the few people from Stanstead at the PPP, so I'd like to apologize to my fellow citizens for sullying our reputation or perhaps reinforcing it.For PPPs, then, you have three options: a) don’t go if the party is classier than you; b) bring shoes; or c) don’t bring shoes, show up in your crummiest boots, find a pair you like in the vestibule, switch, go home.Posh footwear is the best. The committee will continue to’ be very active in 2014 with a public consultation organized by the Town Hall and negotiations between the town of Richmond and the government. Therefore, the committee is inviting anyone wishing to get involved to contact Mandy De- mers at 819-826-1189 or via e-mail at eausainerichmond@gmail.com.In addition, they invite people who choose to buy their bottled water in order to avoid drinking fluoridated water to please keep their receipts and contact them.nt Worldwide, fluoridation of municipal water is decreasing in Ontario, the US, MANDY DEMERS RICHMOND The Record | newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2013 Page 7 La Local Sports Phoenix thanks its fans From left to right, Phoenix captain Jonathan Deschamps, season ticket holder Richard Bernier and goaltender Francis Desrosiers.SHERBROOKE hockey team exchanged their sticks and skates for coats and hats Wednesday morning, as the entire team braved the record cold temperatures to pay Christmas visits to some season- ticket holders. As the holiday season approaches, the Phoenix organization wanted to thank some of its season-ticket holders, selected at random, by giving them a poinsettia from the Maison Aube-Lumière and a new deck of cards featuring team pe for the Sherbrooke Phoenix players.“It is attention given especially for those who support and encourage us at every game,” says team Director of Operation Sylvie Fortier.“In addition, we took advantage of this promotion to support our fundraising for the Maison Aube-Lu- mière.” At 7 a.m.Wednesday, 30 players knocked on the door of twelve season ticket holders throughout the city. The organization would like to take the opportunity to wish every fan a happy holiday season and to thank them for their valued loyalty. It’s a White Christmas for Parc Mont Megantic Record Staff SHERBROOKE utdoor winter enthusiasts can Or forward to some exceptional outings in Mont Megantic Park as its snowshoeing and cross-country trails are set to open this Saturday, December 21.The abundant snowfall of the last few days has ensured that the mountain will be completely decked out in freshly fallen snow, as the Park has now received over 100 inches of snow since the beginning of the month, including 40 cm on Sunday. There is currently between 40 to 60 cm of snow on the ground, depending on elevation.Ski trails will be groomed by Saturday morning, and snowshoe trails will all be accessible. The park also posts snow conditions on the www.parcsquebec.com website. In the new year, every Saturday from January 25 to March 29, the park offers a special evening including dinner, a torchlight walk, and an evening of astronomy at the ASTROLAB, starting at $43.17 per adult.Early reservation is suggested. The park also features a variety of shelter for guests — shelters, winter camping, and prospector’s camps. To learn more about the park’s winter offerings, visit www.parcsquebec.com.or call 1-800-665-6527.holders throughout the city.Municipal skating open in Magog MAGOG T= spell of cold weather has done the trick and the Town of Magog has officially opened its skate path, eight outdoor rinks, and the municipal slide on Hatley St.The illuminated ice path covers 2.5 kilometres along the shores of Lake Memphremagog and features heated chalets at each end.It is open daily from 8 a.m.to 10 p.m.The eight rinks are open Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 9 p.m.and on weekends, public holidays, and ‘ped’ days from 11 a.m.to 9 p.m.They are located at Merry Point, Parc des Hautes- Sources, Parc Maurice-Theroux, Princess-Elizabeth, la Ruche school, Parc d’Omerville, and Parc des Patriotes. The Des Patriotes and du Ruisseau rinks are the responsibility of the neighbourhood, so hours there may differ. The sliding area, located at the Hat- ley St.boat launch is lit and monitored with a heated building available to users. It is open Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 7 p.m.and on weekends, public holidays, and ‘ped’ days from 10 a.m.to 7 p.m.: Terms of use and schedules are available by calling Info-Conditions (819) 843-0011.Impact name former Chicago Fire Klopas as coach, fire Schallibaum By Bill Beacon The Canadian Press MONTREAL sons in Major League Soccer, the Montreal Impact have a new head coach. The Impact announced Wednesday the fiery Marco Schallibaum will not re: turn despite leading the team to the playoffs, and that former Chicago Fire bench boss Frank Klopas is the new man.Klopas signed a three-year deal to be head coach and director of player personnel. He was to be introduced to the team’s supporters at a meeting Wednesday night.“Excited at the opportunity to play for Klopas and get the 2014 campaign underway! Welcome to the #IMFC famille,” Impact defender Jeb Brovsky posted on his Twitter account. The Impact had a rookie head coach in Jesse Marsch in its inaugural MLS campaign in 2012, then went for one with no MLS experience in Schallibaum this season. Now the club has a native European with extensive experience in North American soccer. The 47-year-old Klopas, a native of Prosymna, Greece, is a former U.S.international striker who had a 39-29-23 record in three seasons as coach in Chicago. While working as the Fire’s technical director, he moved in as coach of a 1-4 6 team in 2011 and got them to a 9-9-14 record. The following season, the Fire went 17-11-6 and made the playoffs. However, in 2013 the Fire were 14-13- 7 _ the same record as Montreal. But the Impact got the fifth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot over the Fire due to a better goal differential. While Chicago replaced Klopas with Canadian coach Frank Yallop at the end of the season, Montreal chose to delay a EF: the third time in as many sea- Enr ten decision on Schallibaum’s future for several weeks. The club insisted the former Switzerland fullback’s status was undecided even as reports swirled of a search for a new coach.Schallibaum had the team in first place in July, only to plummet sharply in the second half. The Impact was routed by Houston in its first MLS playoff game, finishing the match with nine men after Andres Romero and star forward Marco Di Vaio were sent off.The team also won the Voyageurs Cup by taking the Amway Canadian Championship, although it was then ousted in the group stage of the CON- CACAF Champions League.Schallibaum was suspended four times for a total of five games for sideline blowups, although he had his temper under control by the end of the season. After they were eliminated, veterans including Di Vaio and Alessandro Nesta voiced support for Schallibaum, but the club elected to make a change.Klopas takes over a team that will be missing 20-goal scorer Di Vaio and Romero to suspensions for the first three games _ March 8 in Dallas, March 15 at Houston and March 22 at home against Seattle. The Fire will visit Olympic Stadium on April 12.Klopas played nine seasons in Greece, winning four championships with Athens club AEK, before joining the Kansas City Wizards for the inaugural MLS campaign in 1996.He moved to Chicago in 1998 and the Fire won both the MLS Cup and the U.S.Open Cup in the club’s first season. He retired as a player after the 1999 season and worked as a television commentator until he was hired as the Fire's technical director in 2008.Assistant coach Mauro Biello, a former Impact star player who hopes to be head coach one day, will remain as assistant coach.Goalkeeper coach Youssef Dahha and fitness coach Paolo Pacione will also stay on.—— Page 8 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2013 production@sherbrookerecord.com The Record TOWNSHIPS" CRIER TOWNSHIPS If you want to drink, that’s your business. If you want to stop, we can: help.Call Alcoholics Anonymous 1-888-424- 2975, www.aa.0rg MELBOURNE St.Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1169 Rte 243, Melbourne, will be holding services at 10:30 a.m.on Dec.1, 8 & 15.Afternoon service on Dec.22 at 5 p.m., followed with a potluck.Christmas Eve Service on Dec.24 at 7 p.m.No service on Dec.29.LENNOXVILLE Christmas for you.Join us for singing, fellowship and Christmas Dinner on Wednesday, December 25 at Hope Community Church, corner of Queen and College, Lennoxville, 11 a.m.(doors open at 10:30 a.m.) to 1 p.m.Everyone is welcome. No charge - “our gift to you.” For transportation or information, call HCC at 819-822-2627 or Paul McLean at 819- 820-5932.WATERVILLE Sunday, December 22, 7 p.m., the annual Christmas Carol Service at the Water- ville-North Hatley United Church, followed by a time of fellowship.Come join us in this time of Christmas cheer.MOF'S RIVER This year, St.James Lennoxville is hoid- ing their Christmas Eve service at the Moe’s River Church. It will be taking place from 6 p.m.to 7:30 p.m.on December 24.Come and enjoy a lovely service of Nine Lessons and Carols.Merry Today is the 353rd day of 2013 and the 89th day of autumn.TODAY'S HISTORY: In 1777, the Continental Army under George Washington set up winter quarters in Valley Forge, Pa.In 1932, the BBC World Service first aired, as “Empire Service.” In 1998, the U.S.House of Representatives voted to impeach President Bill Clinton. In 2011, North Korea announced that dictator Kim Jong Il had died two days earlier.TODAY'S BIRTHDAYS: Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982), Soviet leader; Jean Genet (1910-1986), author; Edith Piaf (1915-1963), singer/actress; Cicely Tyson (1933- ), actress; Richard Leakey (1944- ), paleoanthropologist; Robert Urich (1946- 2002), actor; Reggie White (1961-2004), football player; Criss Angel (1967- ), magician; Tyson Beckford (1970- ), model; Alyssa Milano (1972- ), actress; Warren _ Dateboo Christmas! Now North might raise to four spades because he has a minimum. But it is reasonable to control-bid (cue-bid) four diamonds. Then South employs Black- wood before signing off in six spades.CROSSWORD Page
