Apart from this there was little unpleasantness between the teams, but the Shamrocks had the handling of a very nasty family quarrel. The exceedingly ineftective work of O'Meara and Dana- her led to the utterance of many remarks the reverse of complimentary to thesa two players. These remarks were made, perhaps, under peculiar stress of kircumstances, and it would not be wise to set them down here, but it will be significant enough to note that after the filth gama Danaher was put at centre field and O'Meara to first home, Kelly and Hinton taking their placeks Stinson, who played at cover point aîter the second game, was in excellent form.He missed nothing, was as cool a3 a cucumber, and always did the things which he ought to have done.McKenna in the flags was a stone wall.He stopped shot after shot, and his work benind was the best he ever did.Dwyer was, as usual, in perfect form.‘All through the defence the same may be said, Moore, Murray and O’Brien were quite up to last season’s stand, and while Kelly, Hinton and Neville left pothing for the most captious to desire.Captain O'Reilly had his men under much better control than at amy time this Eeason.Of the Cornwalls the dusky Lewis fully earned the great applause he was given.Murphy in the flags played without an error. The defence was wall trained, and in good condition.Tobin at centre Was not a star of very great magnitude.Turner and Leacy made a most formidable team, especially with McCutcheon as & side partner.Broderick played a hard consistent game, but Milden was inadequate.Altogether the Cornwall team is 8 corker. There must have been 3,000 people at the grounds by the time the match start ed, and over a third of these were Shan- Tock supporters. The visiting team after an ineffectual attempt to get a decent dinner, appeared on the field a little after half past three. The Cornwalls had preceeded them and the Gladiators Uned up thus: i Cornwalls—Goal, Murphy; point, Mc- Lennon; cover, Riviere; defence, Crites, Levis, McDonnell; centre, Tobin; home, Turner, Leacy, McCutcheon; outside, Broderick; inside, Milden.Captain, Mc nell.Shamrocks — Goal, Stinson; point, wyer; cover, McKinnon; defence, Moore, Murray, O’Brien; centre, Kelly; home, Hinton, preville, Donaher; outside, O'~ » e, .i ' Rely Tucker.Captain, O' P.McKeown, of the Shamrocks, was referee; A.Hamilton, of Montreal, and W.Pollock, umpires; Messrs, Tansey and {acpherson timekeepers.a The match opened with as fast lacrosse > Canada ever saw.It was a case of h a ane check, pass and check.Stinson © stop a long throw and he was Quite equal to tha occasion. There was & scramble at the Cornwall end and Crites relieved, er made &- grand run up the field and threw right in on the flags but Lewis sent it out tripped Moore but Was à one som the face t ¢ McCutcheon. He ran up field and passed to Broderick, McKenna missed stopping the pass by an inch or two.He turned to check the Cornwall outside home, but Was too late. The umpire's hand was up and the Cornwalls had the first game in Th minutes 20 seconds.e second game was ver but without success and Danahers he also went to Cornwall, O'Meara was &iven the ball time and again. He shot, Shamrocks’ favor at the start, but it says were similarly unsuccessful.Once O'Meara had the goal wide open, but for some inexplicable reason he passed instead of shooting.Lewis distinguished himself with a pretty catch and a quick throw, Murray and Moore colliding in an apparent attempt to sandwich him.So far the game had been exceedingly fast, but it was too fast to last.Crites and Turner made & pretty combination run all the way up the field, passing from ona to the other. There was a scramble round the Shamrocks’ flags.Stinson ran out to check Turner and the latter scored.Time—5 1-4 minutes.McKenna and Stinson changed places at the beginning of the third game. After the face the ball travelled to the Sham- rork end.Stinson passed to Neville and the latter made a brilliant run all the way up the field. He passed to Dana- her who sent in a corking hot shot which found its way home.Time— 1 ‘| which found its way home.Time — 1 minute.; To give an adequate description of the fourth game would require columns.lasted nearly an hour, though the actual playing time was 32 1-2 minutes. The ‘Shamrocks played a marvellous passing game only to lose the ball at the crucial pcint.‘The game was altogether too fast to follow.Neville, Hinton and Kelly all took ‘their tries at goal, but without buccess. The game opened as a defence game for Cornwall, but the home team Was in excellent shape and their training never failed them. The spectators were kept in a state of seething excitement.Leacy had one chance to shoot, and McKenna made a grand ttop.Shortly after this he was hurt and h stop was made.‘Then the tide furned and Cornwall took the aggres- give. After mudh end to end play Lewis sent up, Broderick made a neat catch and immediately threw.‘The agony was over, Cornwall had scored again. There remained 41 minutes of playing time. The magnificient defence work of the Shamrocks lcegan to show itseif.Stincon Was fauitless.Lewis was sent oft for tripping Hinton, but no free throw was awarded. The Cornwalls soored through a piece of bad judgment by Hinton and Moore. They were ‘so busily engaged in holding McCutcheon against the fence that Leacy ran in, got the ball and passed to Milden, who woored after over twelve minutes’ play.It was after this that Kelly and Hinton replaced O'Meara and Danaher, but Kelly was sent to the fence for hitting back at the chopper Riviere, who had first struck him.It was a big handicap, but the Shamrocks never lost heart.McKenna got a free throw for being fouled by Milden, but Milder was not sent off! Moore passed to Danaher, tand the latter scored Shamrock’s second game.In the minute and a half that remained there was nothing interesting. It was after the whistle blew that Tucker and Riviere commengped to dissect one another.Summary: First game—~Cornwalls, scored by Brod- erick.Time 5.20.Second game—Cornwalls, scored by Turner.Time 6.16.Third game—Shamrocks, scored by Dan- aher.Time 1.00 Fourth game-Cornwalls, Broderick.Time 32.30.‘Fifth game—Cornwails, scored by Mil- den.Time 12.25.&ixth game—Shamrocks, scored by Dan- aher.Time 8.00 ! AT THE HERALD OPFICE.The enthusiasm at the Herald office knew mo bounds. As soon as the placards were out announcing that the Cornwall and Toronto games would be bulletined the ‘When Blenheim Palacæ and Park wera prestnted to the first Duke of Marlborough by an act of Parliament, one of the stipulations of the tenure was that flag ‘bearing three French fleur-de-lis should be presented by the owner of the place annually to the sovereign. This flag has to be presented in the library at Windsor Castle on the anniversary of the battle of Bienheim, and: it is placed opposite to the flag which the Duke of fVellington has to present In the same manner to the Queen om the anniversary of the battle of Waterloo.‘Ji you contemplate writing any de- Kailed account of thk matter I should advise that you should come and inspect the flag for yourself, as it is hung in one of the rooms that are open to the public for inspection on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays in each week. You will then have am opportunity, of making any notes that suggest themselvea your mind, MARLBOROUGH.” The salaries of seventeen members of Lord Salisbury’s Cabinet aggregate $450,- 500, as against $64,000 paid to the eight members of President Cleveland's Cabi- pet, or, including his salary, $114,000.{The Prime Minister gets no salary as such, but as Foreign Secretary the Mar- puis of Salisbury gets $20,000 per an- pum. Each of the other secretaries of ptate, as well as the Chancellor of the Exchequer and ‘the First Lord of the Ureasury (Mr.Balfour), receives the game salary. The Lord not get a seat in the Cabinet.A public opinion of his present chief expressed by Mr.Chamberlain eight years ago is published this morning.«Lord Salisbury,” said His Lordship’s present calm which is usual at this time of the year, says the Indicator, there is no cause for writing in a less encouraging tone than last month.City property.relapses maturally, giving way to the increased attention paid to suburban and country sites, and activity is not Lo be looked for in places wnere it is not likely ta be found. There is quite a demand for lois in those neighooring town sites where access is given Lo the electric Cars, and we are pleasad to note the marked activity which has made itself felt in these places. In fact, a truc therms-~ meter of the real estate market ls now found in the healthy transactions in the several adjoining municipalities. These gales are important, as they denote confidence in lhe betterment of trade and times, and the prices realized are alto gether fair. The country can, no more remain permanently in the slough oi business despondency than it can without interruption, ride on the crest of waves of prosperity. It is, therefore, à welcome sign to witness returning confidence praciically attested by the investment of capital in real estate. That there has been no undue inflation in values is proved bY the stability of prices actually realized which give evidence of solid investment. We note this month the following sales: 201 University Street, estate G.A.Holiand, to the Montreal Diocesan Theological College, $25,00), the gift of Mr.A.F.Gault; estate John Smith to estate John Macdou- all, canal property on the mill-race Fents, $2,000 and an annual rent of $220 ; 648-652 St.Lawrence Street, Geo.0 Lulham to Mrs.Perrault, for Which There Should be Little Use.Why Not Have a Better Understanding With Yourselfas to What Makes Your Skin Sallow and Blotchy. The treatment of diseases of the skin has been much studied by scientific men.Soaps, lotions, cosmetics, etc, without number have been heralded all over the country for years. It is a fact that nearly all diseases of the complexion are directly caused by some stoppage of nature's drains. All the local treatment In the world cannot permanently cure these annoying complaints. The bowels, nature’s drainage system, must be kept free from clogging or disease results.Especially is this true with women. It is almost past belief to what extent female troubles are directly traceable to constipation of the bowels. The researches of an eminent physi- clan led him to believe that much scientific treatment, with a view to regulating the bowels, was erroneous. He demonstrated that the simple remedies of nature, used in as nearly a natural state as possible, were most efficient. These researches led to the production of Karl's Clover Root Tea, the greatest regulator of bowel disorders known to man.Its wonderful efficacy has amazed all who have used fit.Mr.Louis Goetz, of Buffalo, N.Y., President Cleveland's old caterer, says of this wonderful remedy: “I have taken Karl's Clover Root Tea every evening before going to bed, with great results. My skin looks better, andthe pimples are disappearing.Have been troubled for years with eruptions on the skin, and all remedies so far have failed to help me.A few doses of Karl's Clover Root Tea worked wonders.” A proper use of this sterling remedy will Insure bright, clear skin, healthy color and freedom from headache, dizziness, indigestion and all kindred ills.It can and does cure all forms of disease resulting from a clogging of the system. This natural remedy, brewed directly from roots and herbs, strikes directly to the seat of the trouble, and is a boon to mankind.Do not suppose that you are a sufferer from some high sounding organic complaint.Look to your bowels.Keep them free and don’t worry.Get a sample of Karl's Clover Root Tea at B.E.McGale’s, 2123 Notre Dame immediately gave the alarm. The child could not hr gotten out of the hole, so the neighbors were all summoned, and some eighty of them went to work digging a great square hole pear the well, {This being completed to a depth on a level with the child, a tunnel was made from the hole to the well, and the child rescued after being in its perilous condition for twenty-three hours.Itsy plain tive cries, **Mammal mamma, come take me out!’ were heartrending. The child will recover,—Galveston News, Patronize Citizens" Gag Coa 817 Sta James Streefe_ , Cont.CHANGED THEIR FAITH.Some Noted filled by an intelligent and appreciative audience Saturday last, assembled to hear the Hon.L.H.Davies, M.P.for Queen's County, Prince Edward Island, speak on some of the political issues of the day from a Liberal point of view, John Craik, Esq., was chosen chairman of the mecting.Mr.Davies was accompanied by J.Scriver, M.P.for Huntingdon County, who, in introducing Mr.Davies to the meeting, congratulated himself upon having been instrumental in enabling his constituents in the eastern part ot the county to listen to addresses of men so distinguished in Canadian political life, and so noted as speakers, both on the floor of Parliament and on the platform, as the Hon.Mr.Davies and the Hon.Mr.Fraser.Mr.Scriver, after having spoken briefly upon the injury and injustice which had been inflicted upon the farmers of the Dominion, especially by the National Policy, was followed by Mr.Davies in a speech of rare eloquence and power.Though Mr.Davies spoke at considerable length in denunciation of the evil and Wrong caused to the country by the existing fiscal system, and of the corruption, which, as one of the unavoidable results of such a system, had, of late, especially, almost “run riot” in this fair land ot ours, he commanded the undivided and close attention of his hearers to the close of his earnest and forcible address.A vote of thanks to the speakers of the evening, moved by the Rev.Mr.Brown, pastor of the Franklin Centre Congregational Church, and seconded by Daniel Parham, Esq., was received and carried with great heartiness and enthusiasm.A goodly number of ladies were present, who seemingly appreciated and en- Joyed as fully az did the members of the sterner sex present, Mr.Davies’ stirring and convincing utterances.À similar Lieu- tenant-Governor Daly, of Nova Scotia; and Lijeutenant-Governor Howlan, of Prince Edward Island, were present.A telegram of regret at not being able to attend was received from Lieu- tenant-Governor Chapleau; Rev.W.W.Carson, of Detroit; Rev, Mr.Knowles, of Stewarton Presbyterian Church, Ottawa; Rev.Mr.Boggart, St.Albans; Rev.Mr.Pollard, St.Johns; Chas.Magee, president of the Conservative Association; R.H.Code, president of the Macdonald Club of this city, and Hon.Mr.McDougall.In addition to the military there were about 5,000 people on Parliament Square during the ceremony. The Ottawa Field Battery, under the command of Major Bliss, fired a salute of 21 guns. The Princess Louise Dragoon Guards, the Governor-General’s Foot Guards, the Royal Scots and the 43rd Battalion were all drawn up in parade on the lawn in front of the puildings, presenting a splendid appearance.Just as the last gun of the salute was fired Sir Mackenzie Bowell stepped forward and was received with cheers. He said : ‘I regret exceedingly the unavoidable absence où His Excellency as the representative of the Crown upon this med morable occasion for the reason given in the following telegram: ‘To the Hon.Sir Mackenzie Bowell, Ottawa.Quebec, June 380.‘Allow me to offer my best wishes, on the auspicious occasion of the unveil ing of the memorial of Sir John A.Macdonald.1t is mot many weeks since I had the pleasure of travelling with you to Montreal to take part in the unveiling of another memorial to the same great man, and I greatly regret that owing to arrangements made before I learned of the proceedings of Monday, I am not to be present on this occasion.Obviously in no place could such a monument be more appropriately erected than in the Official Capital of Canada, nor could the inaugural ceremony be held on amore opportune day than that on whizh we commemorate the formation of the Dominion. The memory of Sir John A.Macdonald has a secure and a cherished piace in the hearts of his countrymen and it is well that by these public monu+ ments future generations may “we reminded or taught of his career, his ser« vices, and the patriotic sentiments by which he was inspired and actuated.(Signed.) ABERDEEN." The Premier continued: “If there was one characteristic of Sir John Macdonald more marked than his loyal de- vitien te the Crown, it was his constant care of the interests of the British Empire, and if that loyalty was so marked and go productive of good for the Empire, it was in turn loyally recognized. The honors which towards the close of his active life were show- cred upon Sir John Macdonald by the Queen, by learned bodies and by his own country were splendid rewards for splendid service.” Sir Mackenzie Bowell then quoted from a letter of Her Ma- Jesty to Lady Macdonald after Sir John's death, in which Her Majesty referred to the loyal and devoted service which the the Premier had rendered the Sovereign and gave a quotation from the speech of Lord Rosebery on the occasion of the Placing of the bust of Sir John Macdonald in the crypt of St.Paul's in London, where the household gods of our commonwealth are being collected.Next Sir Mackenzie Bowell referred to the great speech of Mr.Laurier when referring in the House of Commons to the death of Sir John Macdonpld, Further, Sir Mackenzie said: ‘These monuments teach us that the British Empire is one of the greatest secular agents for good that the world has ever seen. This was the testimony which Macdonald and Cartier gave during a lifetime.Again, they teach us that civic freedom is better preserved by British ijaws, traditions and institutions than under any system in the world.(Cheers.) Macdonald and Cartier labored to preserve and perpetuate them.Again, they teach that public men engaged in a common cause, if they wish to be great and successful and honored, must keep faith with each other. They teach us, too, that as the world is greater than the Dominion, so the Dominion is greater and more important than the province, and the province more important than any of its cities or towns, They teach us that if there is friction with Imperial authorities it is our duty to lessen it, if there is jealousy among the provinces it is our duty to allay, if there are differences in race and religion it is our most solemn duty to minimise and assuage them, if there is rivalry among parties it is our duty to think first of the country and its needs, and if there are difficulties in the way of good government of the country it is our duty as men of affairs to overcome them.(Applause.)If we have any doubt about the carrying out of such teaching, any doubt of our own ability to fulfil it, let us remember that another lesson is taught us by these monuments ,viz: That no man ever labored with loyaity and honesty for the public good without being sooner or later rewarded by the support and the applause of a grateful people.(Cheers.) In concluding his remarks the Premier pulled the cord and the statue was unveiled. The crowd cheered as the famil- lar likeness of Sir John Macdonald appeared in sight as the canvas dropped to the ground. There were floral wreaths on the pedestal and the base from the Manufacturers’ Association, the Macdon- ald-Cartier Club, the Liberal-Conservative Association, Ottawa.Mr.Arthur Weir, of Montreal, at this point read an original poem of his own for the occasion.Sir Adolphe Caron was the next speaker. He delivered a forcble and able panegyric on his colleague, Sir John Macdonald.Referring to the work the late Premier accomplished in blending different races and creeds throughout the Dominion into one united body, working together for the general prosperity and welfare of the whole country. In this work, Sir Adolphe said, Sir John was ably assisted by Sir Geo.E.Cartier.It was, therefore, their duty to follow that good example thus set down by the late lamented leader in that excellent work of conciliation.‘ Lieut.-Govexnor Kirkpatrick in ‘hid ren MONTREAL DAILY HERALD, TUESDAY, JULY 2, 1895, ee i= — THE STATUE—By Heserr.[From a Photo by 8.J.Jarvis.] 1676 Notre Dame Street, MONTREAL.LADIES’ FRENCH TANSY PILLS Used successfully by thousands; safe and sure; act in 36 to 48 hours; price $2.50; cost more than others, but the never fail or disappoint; sold wit written guarantee; no cure no pay; advice in person, or letter, free.isit or address Standard Medical Co’y, Room 44.246 St.James St.Montreal.RECIPE For Making a Delicious Health Drink at a Small Cost.Adams’ Root Bezr Extract. One Bottle.Fleischmann’s Yeast.Half a Cake.SUEAT.….soe sen +0 +++» TWO Pounds.Lukewarm Water .Two Gallons.Dissolve the sugar and yeast in the water, add the extract, then bottle; put in a warm place for twenty-four hours, until it ferments; then place on ice, when it will open sparkling and delicious. The root beer can be obtained in all drug and grocery stores in 10 and 25 cent bottles, to make two and five gallons.OFFICE DESKS, Wood floors, counters, bookcases, everything in office furniture is made to order and to perfection and at lowest prices.ees: Co.300 St.James St, marks, complained of the fact that hostile criticisms had been made upon the occasion of unveiling monuments elsewhere to Sir John Macdonald.(He deplored this since it was an insult to the intelligence of tne people, who for 40 years had reposed confidence in the dead Premier.Lieut.-Governor Daly, of Nova Scotia, was glad to be pæsent on such an important occasion. His father wag Financial Secretary in Sir John's first Government.Lieut-Governor Howlan, of P.E.I, said that he came 1,500 miles to be present, and was glad to be able to do so.Cheers for the Queen closed the proceedings. The model for the above statue was selected as thé Lest out of the 51 eub- mitted. It is the work of Mr.Phillippe Hebert, the Canadian sculptor. It pos- sesa2s a noble dignity and simplicity fitting as a memorial to perpetuate ‘the name of the deceased premier. It represents Sir John Macdonald upon a somr- What elaborate pedastal in the attitude +f one addressing a public assanblage, his eyeglasses held between the thumb, and finger of the right hand, a scroll in his left hand, and at his fet a pile of books and portiolins. The great coat is thrown back slightly from the shoulders disclosing the long double breasted frock coat beneath, The features are a good likeness, although it is said by some that the head is throwaa little too far hack, which was not a characteristic pose of Sir John Macdomald’s during his lifetime. At the foot of the pedestal is seated a female figure representing Canada with her right hand upon the shield of the Dominion, and in her left a furled flag, This figure of Canada is moulded in heroic proportions.Where shall we go for a nice Pipe ?To Rosses.Where for the very best fine cut cigar ?To Rosses.Where for the cheapest Walking Cane ?To Rosses.Where for the finest Smoking Tobacco? To Rosses.‘Where for an Asbestos Pipe, cool and nice?To Rosses.“NUR SAID.” Rosses Bargain Day, the last day in the month.Come one, come all to Rosses.20 Chaboillez Squarre. The Garret. What a world of fun we ha © You a fase am@ I a lad, Up garret ! !In the sweet, mysterious dusk.Redolent of mint and musk, With the herbs strung overhead, .And the ‘‘peppers” stiff and red, And, half hidden by dangling corn, Grandpa's flask and powder horn!
