ratified.However, after presenting extensive details on revenues and expenses at a special meeting days before the Christmas break, TBL council adopted a budget of $13,157,180, an amount $158,920 less than 2016, while maintaining property taxes as status quo.The highlights of revenues detail $9,881,920 from general property taxes and the balance from water taxes, waste management, garbage, recycling, emergency 911, licences and permits, transfer of duties, etc.The greatest expenses anticipated in 2017 are assigned to road works ($3,249,780), public security ($2,603,550), public health municipality’s capitol expenditure budget for 2017-2018-2019.Artist Susan Pepler joins A la Carte quaintness of the village setting for her to realize that leaving her Victorian brownstone home and city life was the right decision to make.Not that she has been a stranger to Knowlton.For the past ten years she has been coming to visit family.As well, she has had several exhibitions through the years with installations at the BCHS museum, Le Relais, and The Star Café.With a keen eye for quality work, A la Carte’s Judith Duncanson had recently reached out to Pepler with an invitation to join her cooperative that is located underneath Le Relais in the heart of Knowl- ton.“She is very talented,” Duncanson said.“She is well respected in the art community.We would never have someone who is a totally unknown.I reached out to her to see if she would be interested and we are all delighted that she said yes.” Pepler is delighted with the cooperative setup because she doesn’t have to be at the store all the time, allowing her the studio time to continue creating.“Since I left the corporate world to pursue my own art, it has been a learning curve.I did not have a marketing mind and had to learn it.I have a website and Facebook page and I do exhibitions as well, and my paintings are all over the world, but now I have a permanent physical presence by being in this store.I would not be able to retail on my own because I need time to focus on my art in my studio.” With a bachelor of fine arts from Con- cordia University as well a degree in illustration and design from Dawson, Pepler has exhibited extensively both in Canada and the United States.She CONT’D ON PAGE 3 GROUPEGUYSTLOUIS?COM RUE DE SALABERRY, COWANSVILLE 750-263-5665 @ to thank my readers for Ave comments over the past year.nd may they have a 2017 much improved over the 2016 version.With one crisis after another in all parts of the world, the election of a president south of border who does not inspire confidence going forward, it is very hard to feel optimistic for our near future.But pessimism will not reward us.We have elected leaders who we hope will right the ship.We must also maintain our Right will triumph over evil faith in God, for it was He who provided the means to meet challenges head on and to overcome adversity.Wars have been fought over the ages and right has triumphed over evil in all instances to date.There is no reason to believe that this shall cease to happen.As the year ends, I give food for thought through some poems I published in my books, “A World Diverse.” DAVID EDMOND Granby Lac Brome’s spirit can and must be revived DEAR EDITOR: the December 13 issue of BCN, takes the Lac Brome town council to task for its many failings.Three years ago an individual, barely known in Lac Brome, presented himself as mayoralty candidate with the slogan of working “Together,” whatever that may have meant to him or voters.He was nonetheless voted in, accompanied by six councillors about whom voters and the incoming mayor knew little if anything.Mr.Ingold asks the question “What has this council accomplished over the last three years?” but did council actually have a mandate to do anything?Though the question is pertinent, other and better questions must be asked.Why do voters elect such unknown quantities?Does the fault not lie with electors who believe their civic duty is fulfilled by the simplistic act of voting for anybody with their hand up?Does the population have any idea or plan as to the direction the community should take?Where has the population been or done for the community since the last election?Lac Brome has gone downhill because of the lack of direct involvement, participation and input by its people.Residents have left the guidance, the thinking, the planning, the direction of this town to seven unqualified individuals.Individuals who presented themselves to fill a void, to pass the time and act out their fantasies as administrators.By their inactivity, taxpayers have left an unmotivated council to its own devices and, so doing, have done the community I Ingold, in his detailed letter in a grave disservice.As a result, Lac Brome’s once great ambiance and attractiveness is now dull, shoddy and wasted.Lac Brome has lost its spirit of community, its get-up-and- go.and its pride.What is the solution?The answer lies in the population again taking the future of this town in hand, quite independent from any municipal council.In the “good old days” of 1988 Lac Brome became an acclaimed tourist attraction due to the leadership of a visionary merchant, to the assembling of business people with a willingness to talk, work, act, and invest on a thought-out plan.An unequalled “Knowlton” community spirit was created by “the people,” by the Merchants’ Association, by the once-alive Chamber of Commerce, by committed residents.The idea of community involvement must again be launched by Lac Brome’s real people, its residents.Group meetings must be held.An imaginative and ideally charismatic leader must come forward.Progressive ideas must be discussed and firmed up.Plans must turn into action.It was once done and must necessarily be redone.Lac Brome’s future must again be thought out, its economy studied and worked on, its ugliness corrected, its qualities promoted, its pride revived.Now is the time.MARC CLERK Author of “Whither Brome Lake” (available on the — Having trouble pinpointing the source or direction of a loud noise; — Trouble hearing telephone conversations; — Being told the volume of your TV or radio is excessively loud; — Difficulty understanding a person who isn’t facing you as he speaks; — Struggling to hear conversations in noisy environments, like a restaurant; — Difficulty understanding high-pitched voices; — Being told by others that your hearing seems impaired.If you’ve experienced these situations, a hearing test is a good idea.It will reveal whether you have hearing loss in either ear, and pinpoint the type of hearing loss and to what degree it has progressed.There are several types of hearing tests.A physical exam with an instrument called an otoscope reveals any problems in your ear canal or eardrum.Additional tests include a pure tone test, which reveals how well you can hear — you guessed it — a variety of pure tones.A speech test evaluates your ability to understand the spoken word.Tympanometry tests reveal any problems in the middle ear Death Eric Henry RUMSBY (1930-2016) Eric Henry Rumsby, age 86, passed away peacefully in Markham, Ontario, on December 27, 2016, after a brief illness.Prior to moving to Markham in 2006, Eric and his first wife, Myrtle, lived in Howick in the Chateauguay Valley of Quebec.A celebration of life service will be held at a later date in the area of Toronto, Ontario.Eric was born on January 23, 1930 in Sutton, Quebec, to Percy and Ellen Rumsby.Eric is survived by his children, Lois (Bruce) Nelson, Anne (Tom) Maine, Wayne (Linda) Rumsby, and his granddaughters, Lynn, and Erin (Ricky Lantz) and his brother, Harold Rumsby.He was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle (2007), Wayne's son, Marky (2013), and his second wife, Rosemary (2016).Eric was a retired school teacher, and kept in touch with many of his former students up until very recently when he became ill.He was very interested in the genealogy of his own family, and of the family of his late wife, Myrtle.He will be greatly missed by us all.- HEATHERINGTON, Terry - January 6, 2015.Sadly missed along life’s way Quietly remembered everyday, No longer in our life to share But in our hearts you're always there.EVELYN (wife) BARRY (brother) ERNIE (BECKY), ROBERT, KEVIN (stepsons) ELIZABETH (ZACK) (stepdaughter) In Memoriam and evaluate the mobility of your eardrum.These hearing tests are painless.Taken together, the results offer a detailed picture of your hearing, known as an audiogram.And if a problem should be uncovered, your audio- gram gives you and your doctor the information needed to move forward.Brome County NEWS Jesse Bryant Sales Manager Let our readers know about your products & services Tel.: 450-242-1156 Fax: 450-245-5155 email: jpryant@sherbrookerecord.com Printed and distributed by PressReader press {(Jefe[df PressReader.com + +1604 278 4604 COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Brome County NEws TUESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2017 PAGE 7 Brome County Community Bulletin Board January 7 Marion Phelps Memorial Lecture Series with Jim Manson — Lecture One: The Uneasy Alliance;
