Note: Before jumping in, this voice came to me, my own Christmas Ghost, and needed to be heard.I am honouring their presence with this piece.u're probably feeling a little Y strange this holiday season.I know you noticed that something you were anticipating seems to be at work.I’m starting to ‘forget’.The funny thing is, a lot of the time, I don’t.On a regular basis, I'm overwhelmed by the memory of a moment from deep in the past, almost as though it comes to visit.I have my own Christmas ghosts, just like Scrooge.Mine are mostly friendly, a few terribly sad, some I’ve probably never shared with anyone, or only with a very few who never spoke of it again, as it was with my generation.Sometimes I try to do the things I have always done, some things that I never imagined I could not do — it all felt so robotic, such a ritual.A thing I have done so many times I could never hope to count even the seasons.Maybe a recipe, maybe a seasonal ritual that I took particular relish in being in charge of.But now, something doesn’t feel quite right, and sometimes I can tell in your face that that is so.Sometimes it’s something I don’t even have written down, because I have just always done it, but I can tell that you know it’s not the same.Sometimes that is scary. And other times, it’s peaceful. It does- ANY RESOLUTIONS À | FOR the thing I have forgotten how to do.I think it’s worse for you most of the time, and I know why.Within me, is you.Part of you exists within me.Things maybe you don’t even know about yourself, like how you looked as a child when you slept, or how it felt to watch you do something, or what it was like when you were mad, or playing with your friends. Those things are inside ME, and can’t be in you, because you didn’t witness them. And the painful thing about that is that you can feel that as they go within me, so does a part of you.I have been a vessel for many, and now, at Christmas, there were things that weren’t the same.Even if you knew it was coming, nothing can really prepare you for it.Nothing can prepare you for witnessing your own disappearance.A part of you is leaving.I seem to be leaving too, and sometimes it’s strange, and sometimes it’s peaceful.Somehow though, you need to know that there is still love at the core of everything, and even about being together, because even when you think you are completely gone from me, and I from you; that will never be.I don’t think that rituals and time and memories die. They live on, and they’re inside me still, it’s just that they are being packed away in a place I can’t reach them.Once in a while, you will come back, and so will I.There will be a trigger and a swell, and a recognition, and there will be a lovely moment between us.And then, we will go back to the new place, where things are stored out of reach.Although you can feel yourself receding into storage, although the vessel that carried you for so long is changing, and you perhaps wish you had asked more questions (Isn’t that always the way?I did the same things when I experienced this with those before me.Wishing I had paid more attention to the details they shared, wondered and inquired and maybe even prodded for the truth a few A Add LR So BJ times.), now I will need you in a new way, because while it will be different in this new place, I will still need care and companionship, and I will still enjoy being included, just in new ways. That will be difficult for you to address. You will, in this brand new year of 2017, need to learn a new way of being with me.You will probably mourn (and maybe even cry) for the relationship we once had, and wish that it could still be as it was, and that will make it a challenge for you to take on a new definition.I will need you to be a new friend, even when you want to be the old one, the loved one, the one who lived within me in technicolour, preserved and shared and emerging, making you just a little more whole. You are still a whole person. So am I.More holidays will come and go, and while they will be different, they will be just as important, even if they don’t seem as clear, bright and lively as they once were. The New Year will still march on, and you don’t have to be afraid, because everything we have had together existed and was real.It will always be, even when I can’t carry you the way I once did.I'll be seeing you in moments.Watch for me.Learn to love and appreciate the new me.I will need you to.At this time, and I don’t know for how long, I will need you to carry this new me, and to love and cherish me, even when you don’t see yourself reflected back.Post Script: Sheila Q.here.While some of you may feel like that was a heck of a way to start 2017, I know many of you had an experience like this over the holidays, and others will remember exactly what it was like when you did, once upon a time.[just don’t want it to be left stirring inside you; with no recognition of your experience, and that is why I chose to write about it.Let’s celebrate life at all tension in the world between the need for information and the need for privacy.Modern technology gives us access to news reports or data about people from the other side of the world nearly instantaneously.Knowing that, it is more important than ever to think about why.Why do we want information so badly that people are willing to invade the privacy of others to get to it?There are some legitimate reasons to seek out private information. When what someone is doing behind closed doors is against the law or threatens harm to others, key information can save lives. At the same time, though, the world is also full of information that seems to be broadcast just for fun.It is good to seek knowledge and understanding, but when asking ourselves who, what, when, where, and how in a situation, it’s important that we also ask why.Perfume maker bottles scents of Montreal for city's 375th birthday By Morgan Lowrie THE CANADIAN PRESS t first whiff, the traffic and grime Ac Montreal's busy downtown may ot seem like the best inspiration for a luxurious perfume, but Claude- Andre Hebert begs to differ. In honour of the city's 375th anniversary, the Montreal-based perfume maker has launched five scents, each inspired by a different area of the city. One evokes the essence of bustling Ste-Catherine street, while others try to capture the romance of Old Montreal, the grandeur of old churches, or the scent of the grass on Mount Royal. And how does one capture the scent of a city?Hebert says it starts with a story.“I always start with a blank page and write a story, and every word that's important in the story is transformed into an ingredient,” he said from behind the counter of his St-Denis street boutique. For the scent inspired by Old Montreal, Hebert said he created a “vintage” perfume with hints of cardamom and cinnamon that brings to mind velvet and lace, the dust of the city streets and the smell of the nearby St-Lawrence river. The floral-scented “Metropole” incorporates tobacco and hops - a nod to downtown nightlife —- while the perfume named after Mount Royal includes pine and hints of the incense that wafts over from nearby St-Joseph's Oratory.Hebert, 47, said he started his own line in 2002 after realizing that most perfume makers focus more on ingredients than on inspiration.“They talk about the top note, the base note, the patchouli.it's like a recipe” said Hebert, who previously worked for labels that include Aramis and Thierry Mugler.“For me a perfume is much more than that.” Hebert orders his ingredients from a company in Grasse, France.Once they arrive they are mixed with corn alcohol to create a ratio of 20 per cent raw materials, 80 per cent alcohol and about one per cent water. He says he eschews chemicals when possible, opting for 95 per cent natural ingredients. The perfumes then sit for about a month before they hit the shelves. The finished product sells for $185 for 100 ml - a testament to the cost of the ingredients and the steps involved in the process. But Canadians don't seem to be put off by the price of what is undeniably a luxury purchase.Although there are no precise Canadian sales figures, the fragrance industry is estimated to have grown four to five per cent in 2016, according to the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CCTFA).So called niche fragrances like the ones Hebert sells —- ones available through a limited number of channels - - are a small but growing category in that market.Hebert says scents are important because they can help create or trigger memories and give people little boost when they want to feel sexier or more energized.“If all your chakras are perfect you probably don't need perfume,” he said.“But the perfumes are there if you need a little touch, a little push.” Trudeau 1ssues statement wishing Canadians Happy New Year The the league started unveiling a list of its 100 greatest players as part of its centennial season celebration. The 33 players announced prior to the Centennial Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs played primarily during the league's first 50 years (1917-1966).“It's hard to come up with a 100 players because there's probably two or three hundred great players so for all the 100 guys who are on this list, it is pretty special,” said Wayne Gretzky, the league's centennial ambassador.“Each and every guy that gets to play in the National Hockey League always there's a lot of great players, who could be part of that hundred.” The players revealed Sunday combined for 140 Stanley Cup wins, 25 MVP awards, 24 top goaltender honours and 13 scoring titles among other distinctions during their playing days.Dave Keon, who spent 15 seasons with the Leafs, winning the rookie of the year award in 1961 and guiding Toronto to four Stanley Cups, highlighted 15 Maple Leafs announced.Syl Apps, Andy Bathgate, Max Bentley, Johnny Bower, Turk Broda, King Clancy, Charlie Conacher, Tim Horton, Red Kelly, Ted Kennedy, Frank Mahovlich, Dickie Moore, Jacques Plante John Cotter THE CANADIAN PRESS arks Canada is preparing for an increase in visitors this year as people across the country and around the world request free annual passes to explore the nation's natural treasures as part of Canada's 150th anniversary celebration.Conservationists say it is important for people to connect with nature, but there are concerns about how more tourists may affect the ecological integrity of some of the more popular parks.Ben Gadd, a retired nature guide and author of “Handbook of the Canadian Rockies,” said he is worried about increased vehicle traffic.“Clearly the highway system in the mountain parks _ it is going to be terrible next summer all summer long,” said Gadd, who has been hiking in the region since 1968.“When you have that situation and animals trying to cross there are going to be more accidents, more animals killed.” Gadd said he is also concerned about crowded attractions, trash and people feeding or getting too close to wildlife. He hopes there are enough staff to properly maintain the parks and to explain the rules to visitors, especially newbies.According to Parks Canada, more than 900,000 people ordered a free Discovery Pass in the first two weeks after they became available last month. The government predicts visits to national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas will top last year's attendance of about 24.5 million.Eric Hebert-Daly, national executive director of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, said the Parks Canada plan is a good idea in principle, but there are some dangers. Some parks such as Banff, Jasper and the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario are already very busy.Adding more people could take away from their grandeur, he said.Hebert-Daly said the government should consider better ways to handle traffic in busy parks, including the increased use of shuttle buses. There are also not enough wardens and scientists to monitor the health of the parks, he said.“This may be the year where we realize just how overstretched some of these places are,” Hebert-Daly said.Canada's national parks have a long history of attracting tourists eager to view wildlife and wilderness.Increased media attention is expected to draw even more Visitors.National Geographic Traveler magazine has put the Banff area on its “Best of the World” list of 21 must-see places in 2017 and Parks Canada has been busy promoting on social media as part of the Canada 150 campaign.SO GLAD THAT 2016 IS FINALLY OVER.On Dec.1 so many people jumped online to get a free annual pass that the department's computer system slowed to a crawl.Ed Jager with Parks Canada said staff know they are in for a busy year. The number of cleaning and maintenance crews has been increased to ensure facilities will be kept in shape and that garbage doesn't attract wildlife, he said.Jager said online orders for annual passes are being tracked to get a sense of which parks will see more traffic.Information about park rules is being sent to Visitors.Parks Canada is also trying to take some heat off of more popular parks by promoting other, less-visited destinations. The department has released a list of “ten hidden gems” across Canada for people to explore including the Mingan Archipelago National Park reserve in Quebec, L'Anse aux Meadows newsroom(@sherbrookerecord.com TUESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2017 Page 7 Local Sports After his work with the U18 team Boyes got his first experience with the national junior team two years later.Behind the bench with Bryan Boyes By Dylan Konecny lot of work goes on behind the A scenes for a hockey team to be prepared to play in a tournament like the World Junior Championships. The individuals responsible for making sure the players have everything required to play the game is job of the equipment staff. For Bryan Boyes and his staff working for team Canada, the long hours are worth it.“I don’t look at it as a job, I get to come to the rink everyday and be around hockey doing something I love, I played rep hockey all the way right up to midget. At some point, I realized I probably wasn’t any good so I always joke with people that I do laundry for a living now” said Boyes.Team Canada’s head equipment manager Bryan Boyes is now working with Canada’s best junior players for the eighth time, looking to help the team earn a sixth gold medal under his watch, in a career that’s spanned over three decades of junior hockey.Boyes got his start with at the young age of 14 with the Pickering Panthers Junior B team as the stick boy under head coach Sherry Bassin. When Bassin was hired by the nearby Oshawa Generals, Boyes was brought on as the team’s assistant equipment manager.Under Bassin, Boyes learned the trade with the Oshawa Generals and is now in his 35th year with the team as their head trainer and equipment manager.Boyes’ first introduction to the Hockey Canada national teams came in the nineties when he along with the U18 team went to Japan in the summer of 1994, with a few players that went on to great careers.“On that team, we had guys like Wayne Primeau and Bryan Marchment. It was just an all around great experience, we went to Japan for a month in the summer time.It was a unique experience, it was very different but everyone there was so respectful and more than happy to help us out and it was fantastic, a great experience.” After his work with the U18 team Boyes got his first experience with the national junior team two years later.“1996 was my first year with the world junior team in Boston Massachusetts, that’s when we had Wade Redden, Chris Phillips, Jose Theodore and Iginla, to name a few.” Although the tournament is played in the winter months just after Christmas through the change of the calendar year. The prep work for the team now starts well in advance over the summer leading up.“You have to keep up with technology.Obviously, the sticks have changed. My first year with the World Junior team, the guys might've used three different sticks with the old wooden Koho’s some guys might've used lefts some guys might've used rights.Guys had maybe two different left handed sticks or two right handed sticks and everybody’s happy. Now before there is a lot of prep work starting in the summer time.Ordering sticks for each player, they are all custom, they all have individual code numbers on the sticks. When guys go back to their club teams they might switch things up so you have to keep on top of that. So, the time spent we’re ordering sticks and even skates with the steel now, we can change the steel right on the bench with the new quick release holder, its all about keeping up with the technology.Things have changed a lot but its all been for the betterment of the player and the game.” The players certainly appreciate the effort that Boyes and his staff bring to the team.“He’s fantastic, Him and Chris (MacDonald, Halifax Mooseheads). If you have anything going on with your gear, you know he’s going to be there for you and help you out. They love their job and it really shows” said associate captain Thomas Chabot from the Saint John Seadogs.“Today I asked them if they could change out my laces because I did- n’t have the time before the game. They jump on it.I think they both did one skate. It was something I really appreciated.” Back in 2015 Boyes had to deal with a lot personally and professionally.Suffering the loss of both his parents just before the start of the 2015 tournament where Canada won gold in Toronto.“It was a very emotional year to say the least.Five days before I was supposed to come here both my parents passed away within three days of each other. Then we come here and win, so that was emotional. Then coming back to Oshawa, we go on a playoff run and no one was expecting us to do well at that time.We got on a run and kept rolling full steam ahead, then we ended up winning the Memorial Cup.There were a lot of emotions that year but it was a great part of my life in hockey that’s for sure.” Boyes in his role has seen some of the game’s best players play up close on one of the game’s biggest stages in their early careers making for an amazing collection of fond memories.“The biggest thing I would say about the difference between Oshawa and coming here is here you're dealing with professionals. The best of the best elite athletes and these guys are here because they’re pros and its such a nice treat to be around these guys and that hasn’t changed from the first time I did it to now.If you look at all the team photos of all the team’s that I've been on, the majority of those guys end up in the NHL.” “Obviously with world juniors, every time you're with team Canada I’m honoured and excited to be part of this, its always a memorable moment.2009 in Ottawa was a real memorable moment, when Eberle scored with a few seconds left. One year I was on the team in North Dakota when we had the (NHL) lockout, a team like that will never be assembled again. We had guys like Crosby, Perry and Getzlaf.Winning here in Toronto was special because it was so close to home, again an unbelievable moment.” Over his career, Boyes has seen two of his staffers go on to the professional ranks after getting their start with him and the Oshawa Generals including his son Michael, who is the equipment manager for the Binghamton Senators and has worked with Canada’s U17 team already.“Couldn’t be more proud of him as a father, and as a head equipment manager in Oshawa couldn’t be more proud of my staff and the fact two of my former staff have gone on to pro hockey.John Forget who is the head equipment manager for the Ottawa Senators and now my son Michael who first went to the Soo Greyhounds and now is with the Binghamton Senators. So, two people who worked with me are now in pro hockey and I couldn’t be prouder.” ANDERS MARSHALL Brian Boyes observing Canadian Players on the ice during a stoppage of play in the team's game versus USA on New Year's Eve at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.Canadiens This is in response to last month’s letter from “Dog Lover,” Dear Annie who wants to get another dog but can’t because his wife has refused.I can understand the wife’s position.I have been married for over 53 years and have had many cats and dogs as pets in the household.Granted, I have been the one to bring them home, but I have also been the one who has done all the caretaking. My animals have always been trained and well-treated.My husband has enjoyed them all but has never put the time in.I have to do the work necessary to have a healthy, happy pet.A dog is like a child.Someone has to train it (which most people don’t even know how to do) feed it, give it quality time, clean up after it, take it to see a doctor, be prepared to expend large amounts of money on it if necessary, groom it, keep it clean and, most of all, love it like a family member. Many people get pets and then, after a while, totally drop the ball, ignoring or even abusing it.Then it’s off to the pound or thrown out of a car on a back road.I suggest that this man volunteer at a shelter. When the right animal comes along, he can invite his wife to meet it, and they can decide together whether they want the responsibility of a pet and discuss who would be responsible for what.If they decide together it’s the right thing to do for them, then they can give a needy furry friend a home. All my pets have been rescue animals, and they have all been wonderful family pets.— Mary Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com.E-mail your social
