[" Shoot for the Cure hop Univers Shoot for the Cure heads into 1ts 1Oth By Phil Rich Special to The Record ketball team will trade purple for pink as they take on the number one ranked Laval Rouge et Or at the annual Shoot for the Cure fundraiser this Saturday, Feb.11 at the John H.Price Sports Centre. Now in its 10th year, the breast cancer research fundraiser has grown from a pre-season round-robin tournament on the BU campus to a nationwide annual event including all 47 Canadian In- teruniversity Sport (CIS) women’s basketball programs. The total funds raised after last year’s event was $1,001,283.60.The earliest incarnation of what is now Shoot for the Cure was held in October of 2002.Then Gaiters women’s coach Rod Gilpin decided to host an event in support of fellow coach Kathy Shields at the University of Victoria, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001.In its first year, the round-robin tournament raised roughly $1,400.“We didn’t realize how common [breast cancer| was at the time,” Gilpin pointed out.“We thought it would be a good opportunity to get the players involved in a good cause.Kathy Shields was a great mentor to not only her players, but many of us coaches.” Shields would go on to win her battle with cancer. For her role in women’s basketball programs and her contributions to the Canadian university basketball community, Shields was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in 2016.The little BU fundraiser that could also continued its pre-season tradition until 2007 when raised $50,320.The program has since grown by leaps and bounds with all 47 CIS basketball women’s basketball programs now participating in the campaign.Gilpin is now the Bishop’s Men's basketball team coach, but is pleased to see that the passion and drive for the Shoot for the Cure campaign has continued to STOW.It is now managed by University of New Brunswick Women’s head coach Jeff Speedy, who has eagerly embraced the opportunity to develop the campaign and reach for a new benchmark, having passed $1 million last year. The proceeds from each Shoot for the cure event are donated to local and national charities, with the goal of making the greatest possible impact. In 2015 Shoot for the Cure also debuted the Pink Ball Journey, a coast-to- coast project designed to raise awareness about breast cancer. The pink basketball was signed by every women’s basketball coach from the University of Victoria to Memorial university in St-John’s, Newfoundland, and Gaiters’ Women’s Soccer leads event to inspire change Submitted by Clare Webb Sports Information for a cure on Saturday thanks to an initiative led by the women’s soccer team. They will gather the university’s athletes together for an indoor soccer (futsal) tournament with proceeds going to Ruban Rose, the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.Alyssa McLean, a fourth-year Elementary Education and Fine Arts student and leader on the Bishop’s Gaiters women’s soccer team is organizing the event entitled: Kick for the Cure.“Being a student athlete means more than attending school and being a part of a team,” said McLean about her involvement with the event.“You represent your university and team in all aspects of your life.To me raising awareness for causes like breast cancer are very important. Most people today have been affected by cancer in some way, shape or form,” The Bishop’s women’s soccer team has done Kick for the Cure initiatives for breast cancer in the past. This year they wanted to grow the event and involve other Gaiter student athletes.Te Bishop’s Gaiters will be kicking Following the afternoon tournament on Saturday, the event will transition into the evening for the men’s and women’s basketball games at 6 and 8 p.m.respectively.The annual women’s basketball Shoot for the Cure event will also take place as the two events tie-in with each other.“I think it’s important to start working together with the other teams at Bishop’s University to create a culture that is inclusive and that stands together. It allows for bonding between teams as they work together in an effort to inspire change.“I think it’s also important to work together because usually different teams throughout the year complete a variety of initiatives, as each team has particular motivation or reasons for supporting different causes.I think by standing behind an initiative that touches so many of us and celebrating women’s athletics makes Bishop’s a positive and inclusive environment.” Paul Ballard, first year head coach of the women’s soccer team, has not only been a helping hand for McLean and her teammates in the organizing of the event, but also an inspiration.“Paul has been very open with us as a o = bY PY BISHOP'S UNIVERSITY Alyssa McLean sees a bright future for the event.coach.From the beginning, he has shared personal experiences with how cancer has affected him and his family. He inspired this initiative to become something more by sharing his personal experiences and his dedication to raising awareness.” McLean sees a bright future for the event.“It is our hope that this initiative is something that all Gaiter athletes and students can stand behind and will be proud to be a part of moving forward.” Kick for the Cure is more than just an indoor soccer tournament to McLean and the women’s soccer team.“It’s about being there to support others who are facing the difficulties of cancer and being able to advocate for a Bs cause greater than myself. We want to affect change in the world and I think this is a great place to start.” The women’s soccer and basketball teams will be selling pink t-shirts for $10; all sales will go directly towards the final amount they will give to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. There is also a donation page in connection with Ruban Rose where donations can be made to the initiative. It can be found at: FEBRUARY 9, 2017 Women’s Basketball to reunite under leadership from a pair of former Gaiters Submitted by Martin Rourke lam-Lemay graduated from Bishop’s more than 25 years apart but the two former Lady Gaiters both still bleed purple and are teaming up to re-engage Gaiters of all eras for a reunion the weekend of February 10-12.The pair, along with a committee, are reaching out to all former Gaiters and encouraging them to come back to Lennoxville for a number of festivities, capped off by the 2016-17 squad hosting the Laval Rouge et Or at 8 p.m.on Feb.11.The game will also mark the annual Shoot for the Cure event hosted by the Gaiters.Hallam-Lemay, a Lennoxville native played at Lennoxville High School, Galt and Champlain before moving to play for the Gaiters. She says that her time at Bishop's as a student athlete influenced her career as a teacher and coach.“Playing on the team taught me about commitment and hard work to attain a goal.As a teacher and coach I have always tried to teach these values to my students and players.” She taught for 34 years and coached for 17 before retiring in 2013.Murphy, originally from Kanata, Ont.Clamien Murphy and Maureen Hal- | of the Shoot for the Cure played at Bishop’s in the early 2000’s.She was a member of the 2004 RSEQ Championship team coached by present- day men’s bench boss Rod Gilpin.Like Hallam-Lemay, Murphy is a teacher.“My fondest memories are the bonds shared with teammates, winning a conference championship and representing Bishop’s at nationals,” she said.“Bishop’s basketball helped me understand when you're part of a team everyone brings something important to the table which contributes to the team’s success.” The duo is reaching out to their former teammates and all former Lady Gaiters.“I feel that engaging alumni is an important aspect of an athletic program,” added Murphy.“The relationships that were built and developed, as well as the memories and moments that were shared throughout our times as Gaiters are something to be celebrated.” Shoot for the Cure is in its 10th year at the national level, however has its roots in Lennoxville. It was an initiative started by Gilpin during his tenure with the women’s team.Murphy was a part of the original event.“When I was in my third year Rod had — 4 — À URL NL : pitt orivilégié the inspiring idea to connect the pre-sea- son tournament that we hosted with raising funds for the breast cancer foundation. Each of my remaining years we continued the same way.It eventually grew to become a national effort.“To me Shoot for the Cure means coming together as a community and women in sport to raise awareness and funds for a cause that has or will touch many women and families.” Hallam-Lemay echoed the thoughts.“I wanted to help out with the reunion because it is connected to Shoot for the Cure,” she said.“Most everyone knows someone who has been touched by breast cancer, or some other form of cancer.Statistics show that breast cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer for Canadian women.I think it is very special that Shoot for the Cure started here and has grown to what it is today.” In 2016, Shoot for the Cure, run by the U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association surpassed the $1 million mark in donations to various breast cancer foundations across the country. On Feb.11 the Gaiters alumni returning will be involved in helping the number grow.Local businessman Stephan Elkas (Elkas Funeral Home) has generously pledged to make a donation to the Bishop’s Shoot for the Cure cause. The former Lady Gaiters will be shooting 1 + ‘ y 1 - — Cl Kink for the » v ures £3 free-throws prior to the Gaiters’ games and Mr.Elkas has agreed to sponsor the event and give funds for every successful shot. The reunion slated for Feb.10-12 is generating excitement for a number of reasons.“First and foremost I hope the reunion helps raise a significant amount of funds for Shoot for the Cure,” added Hallam-Lemay.“I'm looking forward to meeting the women of the younger generation that I have watched play for Bishop’s over the years and hear what they are doing now.” “I'm most excited about reuniting with past teammates and meeting other former Lady Gaiters while we cheer on this year’s team and raise money for Shoot for the Cure,” said Murphy. The 2016-17 Gaiters women’s basketball team has teamed up with the women’s soccer squad.Together the Gaiters athletes are looking to carry on the tradition of giving back to the community and supporting the Shoot for the Cure initiative. In doing so they will be selling pink t-shirts for $10; all sales will go directly towards the final amount they will give to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.Stay
