Will continue to be involved.“Youth is a cause that is dear to my heart,” the Youth Agent said.In recent months Dubuc has been engaged in coordinating a consultation process with local youth in order to get a perspective on what the young people want from the places in which they live.A survey was circulated in Richmond, Cleveland, Melbourne, Ulverton, and Kingsbury in October to gather ideas which were then shared at a youth forum in November. The group revisited the ideas proposed at that November forum at the end of last month, identifying three main priorities. The first, according to Dubuc, is establishing better lines of communication regarding what activities are going on in the area.“That’s a challenge everywhere,” the Youth Agent said, noting that communications challenges face almost all community organizations. The second priority identified is that of giving local youth better access to cultural activities. This, Dubuc said, could take on a with food and activities.“It 1s important that what comes out of this process is in the service of youth,” Dubuc added, saying that the ideas came from consultation with young people in the area and were prioritized by people who are well placed in the community to help see them become a reality. The next step in the process, which will begin this coming week, will be outreach both to past forum participants and community members to form working groups for these three priority areas.A meeting has been planned for the 26th of April to form these groups and action plans.Asked how his departure will impact this next step, Dubuc said that he feels that opening up committee positions for “new blood” is an important step in moving forward.“Part of the process of getting people involved in the forum follow-up will also be opening the door to others to step onto the organizing committee,” he said adding that, “I've decided to stay until everyone is settled My daughter had a baby 5 months ") ago and I was fortunate enough to see him within his first 24 hours. So fragile, so precious, so beautiful! Words cannot do justice to the miracle of a newborn baby.A few Sundays back we read the Bible passage about Jesus’ encounter with the religious leader, Nicodemus.Jesus talked about the necessity of a spiritual rebirth at a certain time in each of our lives. When I reflect on my grandson and all that a physical birth entails, wonder: Is it truly possible to clear out years of accumulated spiritual baggage and start anew?I am aware that it is so easy to fall into unhealthy mental habits that leave me jaded and cynical and prevent me from living joyously and thankfully each day. Some of this baggage includes resentments, judgemental attitudes, impatience, and stinginess.I allow my Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Rebirth insecurities to limit my actions and my compassion for others.Although I am sceptical that rebirth is possible, I am drawn to the idea of starting over with a clean slate; the idea of waking up every morning, thankful of the gift of life I have been given and holding an attitude of generosity towards people I meet.On a wall in my home hangs a quote from the Dalai Lama that reads in part: “I have a precious Human Life! I am not going to waste it, I am going to use all of my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others, to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.” This for me is what a spiritual rebirth should entail.Life is so short and I can easily get distracted by the urgent but fundamentally trivial concerns of my day.I imagine that is the case for many of our readers.May we each be reborn, again and again, into a fuller awareness of what it means to be human and what we are meant to be doing here on this earth.) A particular new form of Chris- 3 tianity has adherents who ask “Are you born again?” This question always baffles and annoys me.Being born again is a new concept and not something that our Christian sisters and brothers in centuries past would understand. You would understand that someone was baptized or unbaptized. You would notice and understand that some people were living lives of greater piety or morality. But, the idea that you could be born again, because of a one-time decision, would be unrecognizable. And so, when I am asked if am born again, I answer “Constantly.” We are reborn for a life of following Jesus every time we choose to love an enemy rather than retaliating. We are reborn every time we notice our grumbling and choose gratitude. We are reborn every time we set aside our selfishness to serve another, every time we take the lower place, every time we endure an insult without defending ourselves.I chose to follow Christ as a child and was baptized in my early twenties to symbolize this commitment. This was a death of my old self and a rebirth through the water of baptism to a new life in Christ. This was the first rebirth, but it would mean little if I did not constantly die and be reborn with my choices every day.To be reborn like this is to choose the path of life. What dies in us is our ego and what is reborn is Christ himself, with all the joy and fullness of life that comes with him silently humming "In the bulb there is a flower, in the seed an apple tree." We're weeks past the Spring Equinox.Days grow longer, the balance of the year leans toward light.Overnight ) Every now and then I catch myself that white stuff may diminish from high drifts to a few frayed fringes around the edge of things.I'm wary as cold returns, hangs briefly about, disappears to return again.People greet each other with "Oh no, snow again - this can't last!" We remind ourselves it's April; at least we're on the warming edge of cold. The weather may be fickle but the calendar says rebirth. There's a familiar shift in the air.Streams begin to run again, ground loosens itself from winter's frozen grasp.Listen closely; you can almost hear seeds stirring deep beneath the surface.Ice melts, moistens the soil. They break open their shells, reach for sun filtering down from above. We humans in our own ways reach with them. Our spirits loosen, throwing off the heavy winter wraps, freeing the limbs. We who observe nature are not separate from it.All our legends, stories and rituals for this time of year have their roots in nature's patterns and processes.Changes in the seasonal landscape are mirrored in our very souls.Resurrection, renewal, awakening, and rebirth all contained in this image of the seed.Dry and shrivelled and seemingly lifeless - now ready to open and transform themselves, burst into flower. If you have been carrying the seeds of hope in your heart, take courage. The time for blossoming is here! Let the celebration of life from apparent death begin.Let Spring's message of perennial rebirth sink its blessed roots deep in you.One word, four voices - now it's your turn to add your own: How do you experience rebirth in your life?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Hatley, Waterville & North Hatley United Churches; Rev.Lynn Dillabough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team, Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco pastors UUEstrie - the Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley.THEA FUNERAL CREMATOR 4230 Bertrand-Fabi Street, Sherbrooke 601 Conseil Street, Sherbrooke 819 565-1155 « steveelkas.com UE oO 1 since the opening of our new complex on Bertrand-Fabi Street! back seat to electric guitars and Autotune ey À fa COUNTRY CONNECTION JESSIE PELLETIER AULIS to music, from classical to jazz. After all that time, I guess you have noted that I have a consuming passion for Country Music.Three chords and the truth is how that musical genre has been defined for a long time.Although, country music has evolved a lot in the past 25 years and many chords have been added, it remains music that appeals to people because it is mainly about real life and situations that listeners can relate too but.To call today's mainstream country music county at all is an incongruity.Hot Country is really pop flavored with rap and rock music. If you're wondering where all the fiddle, steel guitar, honky- tonk, and quality songwriting has gone, well, mainstream country doesn’t have it.Country music has been losing its identity.Basically, the country music industry sold its soul in hope to benefit financially in every way possible.By appealing to younger people and enlarging its fan base, everything from music (in any form) to concerts is selling more.Should we consider this the evolution of music, or the abuse of a musical genre to increase the profits?Anyway, mainstream country music is doing great and record label executives in their sophisticated offices are ignoring the plea of real country music fans and the fact that country music is losing its identity.Labels offer recording contracts to newcomers, who have no say on what [on very eclectic taste when it comes they want to record.Artists have to sell out in order to have the career that they've been dreaming of.Once in a while, there’s a traditionalist who manages to emerge and have a number one hit. There are only a small handful of mainstream Nashville performers who keep charting because their music corresponds to this unified sound that radio is looking for. This practice doesn’t leave any room for the others.I could name many artists who keep delivering real country music albums with a reverence to the traditions but we don’t hear about them too often.Their music is not part of the prime time playlists of radio stations, instead they get the leftover slots. This brings me to what really upsets me.Sunday night, I watched the broadcast of the ACM Awards. What a let down to see that this celebration of country music hardly included any real country music and artists.Only mainstream country was well represented. But it is not the first time country music has sounded more pop than its usual twangy tone.If we look at Lady Antebellum for example, their country songs are continually featured on pop radio stations, mixed in with Britney, Bruno Mars, Timberlake and all the other heavy singers of pop music.Lady Antebellum’s songs actually find a better niche, a more cohesive place with mainstream pop, compared to classic country jams like those of Chris Sta- pleton and Grammy Album of the Year nominee Sturgill Simpson. And the same goes for The Band Perry or Sam Hunt. The music of Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Cole Swindell is bro-country: music meant for party- hearty young people. It’s a movement that has been taking the top of the charts for several years now.We can look back on Florida Georgia Line’s song ‘Cruise’ as a reference to when the balance of power tipped from an older generation of male country stars such as George Strait, Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Vince Gill to the bros.| 592" ACM … AWNWARDS Bro-country broke with the tradition in order to cater to high school kids.Guys who are close to 40, sing about party, tail gates, pick-up truck, party again, parking on the beach, party on the beach, girls with short skirts and flip flops, as if they were still in college.Artistic expression should never be restricted to set musical standards, but that is what Nashville and radio has been doing. They force down our throats, this bland cookie cutter formula for instant success.I hate it.I have enough common sense to judge the quality of the music I am listening to and I hate that Nashville decides what is good. What happened to the good ol' two- step beat and Honky-Tonk?Country used to consistently feature classic Nashville storytelling and strong song craft keeping the integrity of their genre.Traditional country music has always been distinct for two reasons: its sound and lyrics. And what happened to steel guitar and fiddle? These two instruments propelled country music to its greatest heights. It made the music distinct from other genres, and it gave the music an identity. The traditional country artists such as Strait, Jackson, Womack, Gill, always thought outside of the Nashville box that’s why their music sounded so fresh. No recipe for success, no cookie cutter just music from the heart. We have always been able to identify their uniqueness from the first note heard. And among the younger artists there are still some out there playing country music that are doing it well, but they’re just not getting the attention that the other stuff gets.Think of Kacey Mus- graves, William Michael Morgan, Brandi Clark, Ashley Monroe, Chris Young, Sunny Sweeny, Aaron Watson, Miranda Lambert, Ray Scott, Margo Price, Mo Pit- ney to name a few.The question is: Where were they the night of the ACM Awards? Why weren’t they invited to perform? And where were the older country artists?A celebration of a musical genre should include everyone.Country music genre has gone through quite a transformation.Producers are showcasing the electric guitar sounds of rock, the rap-infused tempos and AutoTune normally reserved for hip hop.Well, this is not evolution as I see it.Musical genres thrown in all together to make certain that the fan base will be large enough to make money. That’s what it comes to.Record executives now say that Country music is cool! I say bring back the country in country music and find another name for mainstream country.Follow The Sherbrooke Record on Facebook and Twitter! the moral high ground, the loser being the first player to slam the board shut and upset all the letters over the floor.” Once, an opponent of mine almost tore his cards in two when his partner removed a penalty double of a vulnerable four-spade contract (which would have cost 1,400) to five clubs.More often, though, when we discuss bridge losers, we are talking about tricks that we might concede.Often, our job is to eliminate a loser or two.In this deal, for example, how should South play to make four hearts after West leads the club queen?Three diamonds was a help-suit game-try, asking North to look at his red suits. Here, North was rightly optimistic. He had two sure tricks, a diamond shortage and four trumps. When this deal was played in a social game, South won the first trick, drew two rounds of trumps and gave up a diamond trick. But East won and cashed his high heart. The contract could no longer be made.Declarer started with five losers: one spade, one heart and three diamonds. He had to play to ruff two diamonds in CROSSWORD FRIDAY, APRIL 7, 2017 Page 23 North 04-07-17 & 1083 ¥Y 10652 + 94 & AK72 West East &J954 &àKQO72 V9 YQJS + K 10763 $ QJ &0J10 & 8653 right, but South should play the ace and another diamond (or duck a diamond).Suppose East wins and shifts to the spade king.Declarer plays low, takes the next spade, cashes his high hearts and the diamond ace, then ruffs a diamond on the board.East overruffs, but declarer trumps the next spade, ruffs his last diamond and claims.Across 1 Chanel product 6 Father of Hector 11 Interruption 14 Give second trimester without any nausea at all.Considering a recent study linking morning sickness to a successful pregnancy, should I be worried?Dear Reader: Nausea occurs in up to 80 percent of pregnancies. The cause appears to be related to a rapid increase of the pregnancy hormone beta hCG (BHCG) as well as the rise of estrogen. The nausea can be distressing for many women and can lead to worries about a future miscarriage.Paradoxically, nausea may be an indication of a successful pregnancy.Preliminary studies have found this correlation, but they could not differentiate if the lack of nausea was related only to an early miscarriage or to an overall successful pregnancy.A 2016 study in JAMA Internal Medicine looked at women between the ages of 18 and 40 who had a history of one or two miscarriages and who were trying to conceive.Of those women who were deemed to be pregnant based on a measurement of BHCG, 797 eventually became pregnant. These women kept daily diaries, recording instances of nausea and vomiting from the second week to the eighth week of their pregnancy. If a woman had nausea once, she was considered to have nausea in the pregnancy. In week two of their pregnancy, only 20 percent of the women reported nausea, but by week eight of their pregnancy, nearly 85 percent of women had reported nausea. After the eighth week of the pregnancy, nausea was measured at monthly intervals. Also, to confirm a viable pregnancy, the women underwent an ultrasound at week six or week seven.Investigators found that women who experienced nausea at some point during their pregnancy had a 50 percent reduction in the risk of a miscarriage. Those women who were afflicted with both nausea and vomiting at some point in their pregnancy had a 75 percent decrease in the chance of having a miscarriage. Moreover, based on the week-six and week-seven ultrasounds, the lack of nausea in the women who miscarried was not related to a lack of a viable pregnancy. The authors proposed that nausea during pregnancy may have a protective ef fect by alerting a woman about her condition so as to alter her diet and avoid toxic substances, which could increase nausea or harm a pregnancy.I'm not so sure about this, but it is a possibility. In regards to this study, I can understand the worry about your lack of nausea as you enter the second trimester of your pregnancy. But when you look further at the study, you find that nearly 94 percent of miscarriages happened in the first trimester of the pregnancy. So as you enter the second trimester, there is significantly less likelihood that you will have a miscarriage. Also, this study focused on women who had previously had a miscarriage, so its findings may be less applicable to you.In summary, [I wouldn’t be concerned about your lack of nausea. But please do schedule follow-ups with your obstetrician for your regular prenatal care.SUNDAY, APRIL 9, 2017 A steady pace and curious mind will
