of ash trees since its arrival.While it has yet to be spotted in Sherbrooke, the metallic green tree-killing machine has infected trees in Granby, and has recently been detected in Quebec City as well.It is likely just a matter of time before Sherbrooke residents will have to take on the emerald ash borer to try and save their trees.The city of Sherbrooke has a plan of action on its website explaining that if found on an ash tree in the area, any other ash trees within a 100 metre radius will be cut down as a preventative measure, and others within 300 metres Will be closely monitored.Roughly 8.9 per cent of the trees on municipal property are ash trees.It is estimated that there are at least 1,600 ash trees on private properties in the area to consider.Since 2012, confederation this summer, Pastor Razafy Razafindrakoto of the Eglise Evangelique Luthérienne de la Réconciliation and his community have been getting ready to mark their own special date.Beginning at the end of the month of July, the local Lutherans will be hosting a series of events in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant reformation.\u201cThere are other churches here that have already marked this anniversary, but now it is the Lutheran Church\u2019s turn,\u201d said Pastor Razafindrakoto, explaining that the famous 95 theses of Martin Luther were originally composed on October 31, 1517.The local church, which has been hosted by the Anglican community at the Church of the Advent on Bowen Street since 2014, has organized a special exhibition on the life and work of Martin Luther on the afternoon of July 29, to be followed later on in the summer by a film screening on the same topic and a special bible camp for youth in mid-au- gust.\u201cMartin Luther is, for us, the most important reformer of the church,\u201d the Pastor said.\u201cI have nothing against the others, but to offer a comparison, why would I go to the leaves that dry up and fall off the tree when the trunk, Martin Luther, is still there?\u201d The exhibition will be shown to parishioners this coming Sunday, but the public presentation only takes place the following Saturday starting at 2 p.m.For that open door event, the church will also host a conference, coffee hour, and a special a capella choir singing songs of the Reformation in addition to offering becomes a \u2018sugar By Ocean Francoeur Special to The Record are delicious of all types can be found at Clough Street Cakes, an at-home business run by Lennoxville baker Annie Duriez.Now Duriez has added \u2018baking a difference\u2019 to her offerings by teaming up with the non-profit organization Icing Smiles Canada.\u201cI got an email out of the blue,\u201d she said.Though Duriez had heard of the foundation, she didn\u2019t know they functioned in Quebec.\u201cI was contacted by Leanne Maksylewich (the administrator for the Quebec and North Eastern Ontario chapter of Icing Smiles) and she told me about this young boy who was just turning 15 with Hunter Syndrome.\u201d The boy is Nathaniel Phaneuf.He lives in Stanstead with his mother, Lisa Bernais, and younger sister, Chelsea.The disease, also called mucopolysacchari- dosis II, or MPS2, is extremely rare.It is caused by a missing or malfunctioning enzyme, which can\u2019t break down certain harmful substances in body, thus creating a buildup.The buildup can cause progressive and permanent damage to organs and mental faculties.Duriez explained that the organization receives requests from families with children suffering from life-threatening diseases, like Nathaniel\u2019s.The organization then contacts a local bakery, asking for a cake donation to the child.\u201cThe idea immediately appealed to me, but I was a little bit uncomfortable\u201d said Duriez, confiding that there was another baker that she knew of in Stanstead, and didn\u2019t want to overstep into her territory, so to speak.\u201cIn the end though the other woman couldn\u2019t do it, and I agreed to take on the cake.\u201d And so, the baker became what Icing Smiles Canada calls a \u2018sugar angel\u2019.Duriez was then put in contact with Nathaniel\u2019s mom.\u201cIt was a lot for her to handle.They ask the children what flavor of cake they want and what they're interested in and ask for design ideas and all sorts of things.But because of the syndrome, er that are as beautiful as they Nathaniel is non-verbal,\u201d explained Duriez.\u201cI walked her through it.Lisa was recently widowed, and Nathaniel and his father loved Nascar.So that\u2019s where I got my inspiration from.\u201d Duriez has been baking for three years now.She said that she had however \u2018lived a number of lives before.\u201d \u201cI reinvent myself every eight or nine years,\u201d she laughed.\u201cI was actually a journalist before, and before that I was a translator.\u201d She learned to bake at culinary school at the Centre de Formation Profes- sionelle 24 Juin, where she took night classes.\u201cI used to take photos of the things I would be making in class and share them on Facebook for my friends and one day my friend asked me to make a cake for her.\u201d Since then, according to Duriez, she has been working her business from home, advertising very little and relying instead on word-of-mouth for clients.Her cakes are extremely personalized; no two are the same.\u201cThey allow me to be creative,\u201d she explained.\u201cNathaniel\u2019s took me six hours to make, but every cake is different.They can be complex and time consuming.It\u2019s a challenge, part of the fun, wondering \u2018how am I going to do this?\u201d The cake is a beautiful two tier confection, decked with the Nascar logo, topped with two checkered flags and written \u201cHappy Birthday Nathaniel\u201d at the bottom in fondant.\u201cLisa told me that Nathaniel was enamored by engines and movement.That\u2019s why I got the idea of making the bottom of the cake look like a tire,\u201d said Duriez.\u201cHe and his dad also loved a particular racer, number 17.I thought of making his car out of fondant, but the amount of detail, and how small it would be, I decided against it.\u201d The racer is Matt Kenseth.Duriez said that she was able to find a miniature toy replica of his car, which provided the perfect finishing touch on You found it!\u2019 It was pretty emotional.\u201d \u201cIt was a great experience.I like designing.I got free reign.The only directions were the flavor and the \u2018happy birthday\u2019 at the bottom.\u201d Nathaniel\u2019s mom was over the moon with the cake, which was chocolate flavored.\u201cHis cake was wonderful! And he loved it, he absolutely loved it,\u201d she exclaimed.\u201cWe put sparklers in it.He\u2019s non-verbal but I know he adored the cake, his eyes said it all.\u201d Bernais has asked the Icing Smiles foundation for another cake, this time for her daughter Chelsea, who\u2019s birthday is in May.The organization also offers cakes to the siblings of sick children, given that they are often stepping out of her comfort zone this summer.That means everything from serving root beer floats to kicking burgers at goal in a bid to put the boot to multiple sclerosis.The 34-year-old from Burnaby, B.C., whose mother has MS, is joining forces with A&W to raise money for the MS Society of Canada.According to the MS Society, Canada has the highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world, with an estimated one in 340 Canadians living with the disease.Now in its ninth year, A&W's \u201cBurgers to Beat MS\u201d campaign is the single biggest fundraiser for the MS Society having already raised close to $10 million.The restaurant chain hopes to raise another $2 million this year.A&W will donate $2 from every Teen Burger sold across Canada on Aug.24, augmented by other fundraising efforts.Sinclair will be making appearances at A&W restaurants in Vancouver on Aug.23 and Toronto and Montreal on Aug.24 as part of the campaign.She will also be featured showing off her soccer skills with burgers in a video on A&W's Facebook page.\u201cBeing able to join this campaign, it's massive for me,\u201d Sinclair said in an interview.\u201cAll along I said I just want to be able to help and hopefully this is a start.Hopefully this is a start to be able to make a difference for those people living with MS.\u201cHopefully years down the road people aren't having to deal with what my family's had to deal with and that's my ultimate goal.\u201d Sinclair's mother Sandi lives in a care home in suburban Vancouver.\u201cShe's doing well,\u201d Sinclair said of her mom.\u201cShe loves autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord).The disease attacks myelin _ the protective covering of the nerves, causing inflammation and often damaging the myelin, which is necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses through nerve fibres.The effects are wide-ranging and unpredictable: extreme fatigue, lack of coordination, weakness, tingling, impaired sensation, vision problems, bladder problems, cognitive impairment and mood changes.The cause remains a mystery _ the belief is lifestyle, environmental, genetic and biological factors all contribute.The disease
