that I would state that hehad no reason to doubt bis Royal Highness\u2019s confidence, but that a heavy responsibility was thrown upon him, and thatit might be satisfactory to his Royal Highness, it doubtless would be to himself, to resort to further aid and advice, as the state of the legs had unfortunately formed so prominent a feature of the \"¢ase ; at the same time he was persuaded that Sir Astley Cooper would concur in all that he bad done, When I mentioned it to his Royal Highness, he objected, and assured me that he was perfectly satisfied with Mr.Macgregor's skill and attention, and that he would not, upon any account, appear to shew a doubt which he had never felt, nor hurt Mr.Macgregor\u2019s feelings.1 assured him that Mr.Macgregor was perfectly sensible of this ; but that he owed it to his own feelings and to bis charact r, as a professional man, to make this request.His Royal Highness then objected to the effect it might produce upon the public, to jtsgettiug into the newspapers, &c.I observed thut measures might be taken to prevent this, and he finally agreed to Mr.Macgregor speaking to Sir Henry Halford, and settling it with im.: Sir Astley Cooper attended accordingly, on the 17th, and continued to do so during the remainder of his Royal Highness\u2019s jllaess.Notwithstanding every precaution, it was impossible to preveut it being soun noticed in the papers, and when his Roval Highaess learnt this, be observed \u2018that his chief motive for wishing it concealed was, the apprehension that it might excite unnecessary alarm, which, as connected with his station and situation, might embarrass the Government, aud possibly influence the public funds.Jt could not affect him personally.His Royal Highness's state fluctuated again between this period and the 6th November, when there was a marked improvement in the condition of the legs, which continued until the 20th, when they again assumed an unfavourable appearance, which was the more to be lamented, as his Royal Highpess's strength and constitutional powers had been giving way, his appetite and sleep began to fail, and tbe increasing evil was therefore to be met by impaired resources.Towards the beginning of December his Royal Highness again rallied, so far as the legs were concerned, but liis frame and his constitution had evidently become weaker, and bis Royal Highness himself expressed his apprehensions that his strength would not carry him through the protracted strug- le.5 Between the 8th and 17th December there was again a sensible improvement in the legs, which might have raised the hopes of his Royal Highness's attendants, if the return of strength had kept pace with it; but he was visibly losing strength and substance, and on the 20th the legs resumed the appearance of mortification to au alarming extent, and the medical attendants agreed that his situation had become very critical.Their appreliensions were still further excited on the 22d ; that the Marquess of Anglesea has been offered the appoiot- ment of Commander-in-Chief, (other reports suy the Duke of Cambridge.) but Quantum mulatus ab illo! His conduct since the last meeting of the House of Assembly has raised more open enemies than he can well contend witli; not to mention disaffection in his own camp, and the gradual desertion of many of his former allies.He has since been baffled atull points, beaten from his positions, and all but put to silence.Ile does well now to underrate the efforts of the constitutional writers by whom this has been done.In our remarks we merely iusisted on the number of Correspondents on political subjects who have taken up the pen in favor of the right cause; and we drew an obvious inference from the silence of the other side.Mr.Nertson should be cantious in committing himself by the use of opprobrious terms.When he speaks of ¢ the birelings ¢ in possession or expectation, who can be found in the Pro- « vince or imported into it,\u201d he shows the mark of the arrow which stil rankles in his side.It might be asked, what was the boasted ancestry of this indiscreet reviler?Fostered by the aid of Guvernment, enjoying its patronage, and basking in itsfavor for more than half a century, every member of his family, including;bimself, comes under the designation he utters as à reproach to those, who at least have some merits which he and they never possessed, those of affection, fidelity and gratitude.1f those feelings constitute a hireling,\u201d then.most assuredly Mr, NEILSON never was one.Buc if itis in the character of a*¢ hireling,\u201d to do that for lucre which.inclination condewns, and consequently to betray the master who expects his work to be done honestly, and reckons on the complete support of the servant who has accepted his terms, then Mr.NEIL~ son.most assuredly was a \u2018\u201c hireling.\u201d The remaining clause of the sentence on whieh we are commenting, which applies the term ** imported\u201d to certain persons aimed at, is easily dismissed.Lis inference appears to be, that a Britis 1 subject is not free to come to a DRITLE Province, and to cmploy his time und talents therein without let or molestation.This doctrine may be palatable sound some firesides, we admit; but it is tuo absurd to require any exposition of its justice.It may be a doctrine palaiable to a person who is/ betieved, in his youth, to have been so strongly attached to democratic principles, as to have deserted his employment and left die Province, rather than serve à GOVERNMENT, (0 the forbearance of which he owes that his erratiek propensity was overlooked, himself allowed to return when his ardor had cooled, and the protection of the same Government still continned to bis family : nay, uot only that, but a\u2019 Government which was so reluciant tvmar a young man\u2019s prospects in life, that whea the father We have before answered ihe ale In Core with some propriety be applied to the great leader of discontent oT JRE pega Ron CT ee Po LE BT TR a J 1827.was intended to be removed, he evaded the blow by receiving a renewed appointment for his son ; who had he not pursued a crooked line of politics, might have still enjoyed the patronage which made his family what they are.Such is the GOVERNMENT which Mr, NeLsoN now reviles ; and such is the history of the person who presumes to apply the term \u201chireling\u2019 in a bad sense.How does he like the definition we have given above } We conclude with some advice, which we recommend to the attention of Mr, NErzson and the CanNAuvIAN SPECTATOR, When we assure them it cornes from no \u20188 hireling** source, but from the redoubtable pen of the CoLoNIAL ADVOCATE of Up- PER CANADA, it will.carry additional weight and conviction in the estimation of the gentlemen to whom we submit it ;\u2014 \u201cAn editor who will make use of his press to graiify hisnown spleen of the worst of his readers\u2019 passions, by cousiantly placing his brother printers in an absurd and ridiculous point of view ; giving them nicknames and low personal ubuse instead of home arguments or happy yet not reproachful retorts, should be shunucd.Af calumny is his forte even when unprovoked, what may his opponent not expect if he answers !\u2014 An abusive printer is like a chimney-sweep ; if you contend with hin he is sure (0 blacken you all over (he conuot hep it,) and toe cleaner you are al commencement, the dirtier he will make you appear in the end.Your only safety is in keeping at a distance\u2014for in that case if be shakes his sooty garments the dirt wont defile you.Therefore, our brethren of the tpye, refrain of all things from a quarrel with that editor who shall shew by his want of self-respect that nature had ivtended him ood for a printer, but for a chimney sweep.\u201d We insert an extract from the Glasgow Courier of 21st December, on the subject of Colonial Improvement.It is gratifying to find an intelligent journalist of the Mother Country turning his attention to passing events in the Cana.das.Ou the other hand, itis no less mortitying to feel, that from the want of Legislative aid, and unanimity, much time will be lost before any connected plan for the judicious emplogmentiof capital in the way of improvementcan be acted upon in this Province.These remarks apply particularly to the Association spoken of with such praise in the following paragraph:\u2014 (From the Glasgow Courier, Dec, 21st.) We insert with pleasure some extracts from the Quebec fGazctte, which shew the attention to improvement in things \u2018that are most useful to our North American possessions, and which are at present going on in them.In commerce, in navigation, and agriculture, the Colonists are actively engaged, and we hope that their industry and their efforts will be duly appreciated, and aided by the Mother Country.Those things concerning her Colonial possessions, are more worthy of becoming khown and attended to, that the characters and the actions of thieves and prostitutes, which grace our Courts of Justice, our Police Offices, and the columns of our periodical Journals.Amongst other Societies formed in Canada for improving that quarter of our dominions, we perceive one nained \u2018\u201c THE St.LAWRENCE AssociATIoN,\u201d instituted to improve the Navigation of the Sr.hAwRENCE, the surest and the readiest way to improve the surrounding countries.To this Association we must wish success.The plan is to navigate the rapids of the river by steam boats of a particular construction, and which plan appears to us to be both simple and feasible.The expense would not exceed £20,000, while to construct.canal to avoid the rapids, and thus complete the line- of navigation would cost about £300,000.\u2018The Secretary to the Association, JAMES GEORGE, Esq.scems to be a very active and intelligent men, and to have paid great attention to the subject.The object is of great national and local importance.The more rapid improvement of the Canadas would be the consequence of the success of the scheme, which we shall be happy to learn, is pursued with steady steps, and carried into effect.Instead of spending a Mic- LioN perannumon the sickly coast of Africa, for no goed purpose whatever, and where not a British subject can exist ; a tythe of the sum expended in Canada would comn- plete the navigation of the St.Lawrence, and open a road by which the productions of the industry of the hundreds of thousands of British subjects would one day be poured into the lap of the Mother Country, and rapidly fill lands, at present wildernesses, with the abodes of civilized men.\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014 The following extract is from the New York TiMEes, a very respectable paper, which had been induced to give a too hasty credit to the CANADIAN SPECTATOR : Canada.\u2014F rom the aspect of the Canadian newspapers, and the statements of private letters, which have been handed us for perusal, we are induced to believe that the excitement is by no means as general as the accounts republished generally inthe U.States, from the Canadian Spectator, led the public to suppose.The opposition is said to be confined to a very small party \u2018\u201c who (says
