receives a salary of £300 per annum, but with the addition of fees, &c.the emoluments of the Solicitor amounts to £2526 per annum. The Post Office establishment at London was removed, on the 12th of August, the King’s birth day, to the new building erected for that purpose. The follow ing account is given of some of the new arrangements : ¢ There are three general receiving-houses established ; one at the present office in Lombard street, one at Charingcross, and one in Vere street, Oxford street ; and the time for putting letters into the post, preparatory to their being forwarded to the Office in St, Martin’s-le- Grand, will be extended to a quarter before seven, up to which time no charge will be made for accommodation.A plan is also in contemplation, by which the delivery of letters in distant partsof the town will be expedited by at least an hour ; toeffeet which object the following system is to be adopted : at present the men who deliver the letters after receiving them at the Post Office, have many of them to go a distance of three or four miles before they reach the walk or district in which their delivery lies. This not only consumes a considerable portion of time, but fatigues the man before he commences his official duties ; to obviate this evil, Government has provided six carriages, built upon the Omnibus plan, each to carry twenly persons; these are to be waiting at the Post office to receive the postmen and their letters, and each taking a certain division of the metropolis, will drop the letter deliverer in his own particular walk as he arrives at it, fresh and free from fatigue, and within much less time than would be occupied by him in walking the distance. The carriage is also built on such a plan that each passenger will be able to descend from it on its arvival at the spot most contiguous to the district in which itis his duty to deliver his letters, without the carriage stopping, or being at all delayed in its progress. These twoimprove- ments alone—namely, an early delivery, andan extension of time for putting the letters into the post, would of them selves form a very great accommodation to the public ; in addition to which, we understand, it is in contemplation to extend the delivery by the General Post iu the suburbs considerably beyond the present limits, by which the loss of time and additional expense, occasioned hy the transfer of letters from the General to the two-penny Post Delivery, will be avoided to a considerable extent.” PR DISTRIBUTION OF THE ARMY.The United Service Journal for July contains a statement of the distribution of the standing army of Great Bri ain, a brief notice of which may not be uninteresting to our military readers. The total number of regiments at present in pay, is one hundred and thirty nine, not including the Artillery and Engineers, of which there are twenty six regiments of Cavalry, and one hundred and thirteen of Infantry.Fifteen regiments of Cavalry, and nine of the line are in England : six of Cavalry, & nineteen of the line, in Ireland ; and one of Cavalry, and one of Infantry, in Scotland. The remainder of this immense force is call upon the shareholders has been paid, has placed the erection of this noble institution beyond a doubt ; and that the architect has been instructed to proceed forthwith in carrying his admirable desing into effect. One of the peculiar characteristics of this desigu is, that the superstructure, by which the level with the Strand will be obtained.and un which the College itself will be raised, will, in every portion ofits capacions extent, be rendered available to the purposes of the establishment.By this means economy will travel hand in hand with the acquisition of con- venienzes and faculties in respect to general management which scarcely any other site would afford to any thing like an equal degree. We believe it is not generally understood, thatindependently of the right possessed by the members of this corporation of nominating students, of voting at general elections and atthe election of certain officers, and ofeligihility to the council of management, the students nominated by the members wiil be entitled to receive instruction, and attend the variors courses of lectures on lower terms than those which willbe paid by students not so nominated, It will also be interesting to those shareholders, who have not perused the abstract of the charter, to know from us, who have perused it, that Jit effectually protects them from all liabilities.beyond the amount of Yorkshire, belonging to Sir Bellingham Graham, which came under the hammer of Mr.G.Robins, on Thursday, at the mart.— The property comprised the entire village of Whitwell, situate on the Scarborough road, twelve miles from York, the river Derwent forming its boundary. It included 1,557 acres of uncommonly fine land, divided into nine farms, the Whitwell villa, plantations, cottages, &ec.: altogether producing an annual rental of £2795.The: entire property was put up at 70,000 guineas, and after a spirited competition, Joseph Haigh, Esq.a large landed roprietor in Yorkshire, became the purchaser, at the arge sum of 96,200 guineas, The estate is free from tithe and extra-paroch’al ; but in the rental, a suppositious rent for the villa and plantations, of £220 a year and up- | wards was included, so that the price, upwards of 36 years’ purchase, may be considered to indicate no depression in the landed interest.IRELAND.Three proclamations have been issued by the Irish Government, offering rewards for the apprehension of the persons engaged in some of the recent outrages in the north. One dated the 4th inst, promises the sum of £300 for the apprehending of dislodged from a position which they had taken on the mountain between Florence- court and Swadlinbar), when one man of the Orange party was picked to death, and six others wounded, three of whom have since died,” offers a reward of £200 fur the person or persons ¢ concerned in the barbarons murder.” By the third proclamation, areward of £100 and a free pardon (except to the individual who fired the shot) is offered for the conviction of the person who fired at Mr.Lucas of Michelstown, on the 30th ultimo, as he was returning from Fermoy. An attempt io get up a meeting in Dublin on trade, valuable both to Lerseil and us.Jt appears that the change of government has produced: no ditficulty, baving met with no resistance. The course of the late administration had probably excited much enmity against it, and Bolivar is said to have acquired great influence tliere, which, itis to be wished, may be as well employed as it is extensive. We have received an intimation {rom a course in which we place great confidence, that Bolivar was to lay before the Congress of Peru, at its session in August last, a propasition torevi e the tariff with relation to the United States, reducing the ninety per cent duties soasto remove the prohibition, lower the duties on builion, and permit its exportation, The prohibition has already Leen removed fur the prce- sent by a decree.— Ib ttle —— Important from the Azores.—Captain Bridges, of the Sicily, arrived yesterday from St.Michaels, brings the intelligence of the repulse of Don Miguel's expedition, in their attempt on-the island of Terceira. It will be recollected that an attack had been for some time expected One seveaty-four, three frigates, four.transports, and other vessels, making in all seventeen sail, left St.Michaels on the 28th July, but did not arrive at Terceira till August Sth, They bombarded the town for several hours, and then began to send troops on shore.Jighteen hundred men were to be landed, in three divisions ; but the first and second only had succeededin.gaining theshore, when they were vigorously attacked, and, as it is said, totally destroyed, excepting only one man, who escaped by swimming. The fire of the batteries was then direected against the ships and boats, with great effect—between 260 and 400 men being killed: The seventy-four is reported to have received twenty shot in her hull, and the frigate more then thirty. The vessels were obliged immediately to bear away, and, had entirely withdraw from the island. This is the first serious reverse Don Miguel bas met within his course of hardihood and crime; and it may be the precursor of an entire changein his affairs.lle and his officers have been emboldened, by the impunity he has enjoyed thus far to acts of violence and oppression at sea as well as on land, and on the vessels and subjects of other nations than his own. Some new instances will be found in our paperof this day.The shameful repulse at Terceira, and the shameless treatment of our own fellow-citizens, both together, present the best comment on the recent recognition of Don Miguel by our government. The friends} of that measure will probably: begin now to think that it was at least premature, to take the lead of the Sovereigns of Europe in this matter, for the precarious hope of a paltry branch of trade.Ifit does net produce injury to a much greater amount in ‘other ways, we shall have much reason to rejoice, — 10, 1829.THZ QUESEC GAZETTE.ge OrricE OP THE ADJUTANT GENERAL oF MILITIA, Quebec, 13th Oct,
