Vice-Regal Hunting Party at Quebec UM.—The transfer of the pupils of St.Patricks Orphan Asylum to their handsome and commodious new Home at the back of the Mountain will shortly take place.A brief resume of the work of the present Home on Dorchester street West (near St.Patrick’s Church) may prove interesting to those who have always had the welfare of the institution at heart. The last-named building was erected in 1850 through the efforts of the late .Rev, Father Dowd, parish priest of St.1 Patrick’s Church. The nucleus of the building fund was derived from the estate of one Mr.Bartholomew O’Brien, who bequeathed the sum of £1000 for the purpose of erecting such an asylum.Father Dowd, after maturing his plans, considered it advisable to take into his confidence the leading men connected with the Irish community in Montreal.A meeting was held, when plans were perfected for the building of the Home.On Nov.21, 1851, the Feast of the Presentation of our Blessed Lady, the orphans entered their new quarters for the first time. The occasion was a time of rejoicing to all concerned. The little tots had hitherto been housed on Craig street, near the Champ de Mars.In those days there were very few houses on the hill on which the new Orphanage had been built, and accordingly we find it recorded that the transfer of the orphans was not an easy one by any means.À good deal of snow had fallen during the early hours of Nov.21, through which the boys and girls had to trudge their way.“Their little feet loitered not, however, so light were the hearts that urged them on.The summit of the ‘Home’ topped hill was gained at last, and St.Patrick's Asylum appeared in bold relief to gladden the gaze. For a moment, order was forgotten and a joyous shout awoke the surrounding stillness. Each little one was anxious to bound forward and to be the first to cross St, Patrick’s threshold.Notwithstanding the early hour (6 a.m.) many friends of the establishment were present at the opening Mass, during which some of the orphans from the Grey Nunnery sang i 68) "Lm | ORPHAN 5 | | Ar A ; that the jabot is more than ever esteemed, but, of course, entirely original in form and material. It is very fluffy and soft, and reaches from throat to belt or waistcoat, many of them being of fine laces mounted on sheer tulle. All of these jabots are fastened to the blouse here or there with jewelled safety pins. One of the most noticed gowns was one composed of mousseline de soie entirely covered with soutache, so that the original material was al- most invisible. This was used for the top of the skirt and for the loose cloak; cloth in the same tone completed the borders.Ruthlessly extravagant is the fad for cutting up several almost priceless old shawls to make a single gown, Yet a number of gowns were seen, the beautiful borders being the only trimming, with a touch of velvet ribbon finished with tassels in cashmere shades.AK 2 Cloths for street costumes are somewhat heavier than the chiffon quality we have become so accustomed to, and are noticeable for their original
