characterized the winter.Taber a new town on the C.P.R.line connecting Medicine Hat and Nelson, B.C.The station is about two miles from the beautiful South Saskatchewan River. To the south, the Sweet Grass Mountains in Montana, about seventy miles distant, are plainly visible. The Rockies are further away, but are frequently outlined on the Western horizon. The Mirage of the Plains, often observed here, has a weird, wonderful effect.Far-away points look very close at hand.Sometimes portions of the prairie take the shape of islands floating on the bosom of a great sea.Medicine Hat, seventy miles mechanics and men of the various callings in life are being drawn this way.A large part of the country has coal.In Taber and Lethbridge the coal is of excellent quality for domestic purposes, and is shipped to Spokane, also to the Province of Saskatchewan and other parts. To the West, among the foothills, are vast deposits suitable for the purposes of the manufacturer. In some parts natural gas is found. It is remarkably cheap, average-sized houses in the town of Medicine Hat in the coldest months of last winter paying only five dollars for lighting and heating per month. The city authorities find it cheaper to let the gas burn all day than to pay men to light the lamps and extinguish them.In the south-west of the Province, near Pincher Creek, prospectors are at work boring for petroleum. There can be no doubt of the agricultural capabilities of this section. The yield of wheat and other crops last year was phenomenal.Sugar beet is largely grown, and there is a factory at Raymond for extracting sugar from the beet which supplies a large proportion of the sugar used in the south country.Professor Campbell, the farmer expert from the United States, gives it as his opinion that Indian corn, or maize, will, in the near future, be one of the staple crops of Alberta. When one reflects on the vast extent of this Pro- vince\u2014more than twice the area of the United
