cost, $9,000 a year.Louisiana, 50 lepers; cost, $24,000 a year.In Molokai, $75,- 000 for less than 800 lepers, and here I could keep each 1,000 for $6,000 a year, \u2014\u2014 From the several cities he visited on his collecting tour he forwarded to the Bishop of Canton the moneys given him, which amounted to about $30,000\u2014 the net result of two years\u2019 hard work.This sum he counted upon having invested at 5 per cent.and from the proceeds hoped to be able to do something towards \u2018helping in a small but permanent way the poorer lepers.A letter has been received in Montreal, in which the reverend gentleman expresses the warmest feelings of gratitude to his friends in Canada, and Montreal especially, for their generosity two years ago, and wishes that in \u2014_\u2014\u2014\u2014 he got drenched with rain, which finally subdued him.On his arrival in China he was well received by the Viceroy and high officials.He went to a leper village which he had visited thirteen years before, and found there over 600 lepers.He began work at once, under unfavorable circumstances.First a leper-house was given him, but no furniture, and he had to do the best he could in dressing the wounds of the afflicted.The reverend gentleman in his letter says:\u2014\u201cMy work every day increases, I had some cases of bubonic plague and also of cholera.Oh! what sad, sad = leprosy, which accounts for the cold attention to the afflicted.I am not well, but I hope God will give me a few more years to work for the lepers.I just had three lepers who came to see me.Oh!
