heavy wall plates rested on these pillars, which supported the nave roof.In 1824 the old oak roof, found to be rotten, was replaced by deal.A round plastered ceiling adorned the nave and chancel.while flat, white-washed ceilings covered the aisles and chapels. The late Vicar, Canon Sheldon, commenced the restoration of the Church in 1879.by removing the galleries and concreting the floor (7.000 bodies had been interred within the walls of the church). In 1884 the present Vicar, the Rev.J.E.Woodrow, took up the work and carried it on to completion. The total cost, including the Organ, was about £20,000.Everything really old was scrupulously kept.while the work of the Churchwarden period was Tre- moved. There is no Chancel Arch— canopied figures—St.Peter and St.Paul, the patron Saints of the Church —mark the division between Nave and Chancel. The tall, graceful arches are A M LF AND HIS CANIN OTHERLESS MOOSE CALF 12 was subsequen being deserted by its mother.a The break-up of a Parliament is very much like the breaking up of other institutions, and even the most promi Se a ONE OF GREAT BRITAIN’S MOST HISTORIC AND INTERESTING CHURCHES—The Church of SS.Peter and Paul at Ormskirk, in the diocese of Liverpool.T that has a tower and spire which stand side by side. This edifice is quite unique in England, as it is the only church There is an old tradition that it was built by two maiden ladies, daughters of the pirate Orme, after his conversion to Christianiity. These ladies agreed to erect a church in commemoration of the event, but one wanted to see it embellished with a tower; the other with a spire. They could not agree, hence each carried out her own idea.~~ E FRIEND—This animal was captured near Trout River after tly brought up on a bottle.JE WN Sar LE rt new, the pillars are without capitals; and all the roofs of carved oak are new.We enter the Church by The Porch, which was erected by the children of the parish. In the niche of the gable is a carved figure of the Good Shepherd. We pass under The Spire, which is absolutely distinct from the Tower, and contains the Priest’s Bell, which is by ancient custom rung immediately before every service. The base of the Spire is the original work, the upper part, which looks comparatively new, was rebuilt in 1826.The Font, bearing date 1661, and the Royal Cypher C.R., is thought to have been given by the Countess of Derby, Charlotte de la Tremouille, as a thank- offering for the restoration of the | Monarchy. The Tower is massive, being 40 feet square, independent of the buttresses, the walls are 7 feet thick; so thick that in the opening of the windows are vaults where people are buried. The Tower contains a fine peal of eight bells, old and mellow, the tenor (25 cwt.) being cast in 1497.The Nave is very graceful in its proportions, the two easternmost bays, on either side, enclose the King’s Chancel.Above the apex of the arches are the arms of Henry VII.He and his retinue sat in this Chancel when on a visit to his stepfather, the 1st Earl of Derby, at Lathom House.Ever since then this part of the Church has been called “The King’s Chancel,” and the Chancel proper the “High Chancel.” The Chancel. Here we have the oldest part of the Church: the inner arch of the Saxon-Norman Arch in the -— North Wall of the Chancel, built A.D.1070.The outer arch would be planted on the fact of this A.D.1150.There are also two Saxon figures built in the outside wall at the East end of the Church possibly from an ancient font. The East Window is one of the finest modern windows in the North of Ergland, and will bear minute inspection; the glass alone cost £500.The subject is Christ enthroned, the Apostles in Adoration, the two prominent figures heing SS.Peter and Paul, to whom the Church is dedicated. The two bottom lights on the right form one pic- ture—the conversion of Saul of Tarsus; the two on the left, Christ’s charge to St.Peter; the centre lower light being the angel, emblem of the Gospel. The Derby Chapel on the south side of the High Chancel has been the burial place of the Derby family for 300 vears in the large vault —under- neath until 1850, when the vault was full and closed.A new vault was built at Knowsley, where the last three Earls are buried. The remains of James, the brave and martyred Earl (who was beheaded for his country)’ lie here; his body in a short coffin and his head in a square box by its side. The effigies (dreadfully mutilated by the Puritans) represent the 1st and 3rd Earls of Derby, and the two wives of Thomas, the first Earl; his second wife being the Duchess of Richmond, mother of Henry VII.The Scarisbrick Chapel is that enclosed with brass rails. The cost of restoring this Chapel in keeping with the rest of the Church was defrayed by the Marquis de Casteja, the present Lord of Scarisbrick. The seats are intended for his tenants. The splendid memorial brass is worthy of close inspection. There is an Old Window in the wall near the pulpit, the bottom of which is worn away by the poor receiving their doles there, hundreds of years ago, before the north aisle was added. It is supposed to be the window of an ancient sacristy. Some excellent Wood Carving is seen in the pulpit and reredos, the scene, in RICHARD THE LION-HEARTED TO THE HALL OF ST.STEPHEN’S—On this page are reproduced some life-like photographs of the leading men who took part in the nent Commoners run a risk of being left at home as the result of an appeal to the country. The Lord Morley, however, is a member of the House of Lords.mr Ne MR.CHARLES M.HAYS, President of the Grand Trunk Railway.the reredos, of the Last Supper being after Leonardo de Vinci.Ormskirk Church, which is recognized to be the finest old Church in the Diocese of Liverpool, is quite unique in England, having a Tower and Spire standing side hy side. Two Churches in Wiltshire, Purton and Wanborough, are something like it.but their spires are at the Chancel end, the towers at the West. There is no documentary evidence of the building of the Church. In the absence of this many suggestions have heen put forth. There is an old tradi- (Continued on Page 4.)
