Pio vay hi a TN i gE io - « - .Eh te MOURNING COSTUMES WERE THE DOMINANT NOTE ON THE LAWNS AT ASCOT THIS YEAR\u2014Strange and striking were the contrasts at Ascot on the occasion of the recent races.No member of Royalty was present, the King\u2019s pavilion had drawn blinds and closed doors, and the occupants of the Royal enclosure were in black, unrelieved save where ladies wore white flowers or had strings of pearls as the only ornament.The general effect was the most sombre ever seen on a racecourse, and the glorious sunshine of an ideal summer day only helped to emphasize the mourning.Nor was the meeting up to the average in numbers, though the principal enclosure was well filled and the general public came on to the course in crowds.The representative man in the crowd had some symbol of mourning, and, excellent as the mere racing turned out, there was a sadness about the proceedings unexampled at Ascot.\u2014 .E DEPARTURE FROM CARDIFF OF THE SS.\u201cTERRA NOVA\u201d\"\u2014Amid great cheering and the hooting of many syrens, the \u201cTerra Nova,\u201d the vessel of the British Antarctic Expedition, left Cardiff on June 14 on her long voyage IN QUEST OF THE SOUTH POLE;
