such as the Solemnization of the Sacrifice of the Mass by a Papal delegate, triumphal expositions of homage, and solemn benedictions and impressive processions of the Eucharist, in the open thoroughfares, while the faithful will unite in a general Holy Communion.Outside these liturgical acts the faith, piety and enthusiasm of of the congressists will be stimulated by the addresses from distinguished preachers arg speakers, each illuminating some feature of the Dogma of the Real Presence of Christ “vesterday, to-day and forever,” while the section meetings will hold discussions which apply the meaning of the doctrine to social life and duties, while all the efforts of th Congress will be centred on the person of Christ, especially the Eucharist, and the extension of Christ’s kingdom on earth.THE ORIGIN OF THE EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS.The modern Eucharistic Congress arose in France, the land of heroic faith and hostile negation.On the 29th of June, 1873, at Paray-le-Monial, in its basilica dedicated to the “Sacred Heart,” with which devotion the memory of Paray and that of the B.Interior of Cologne Cathedral, Germany, looking down the choir through the nave.Margaret Mary Alacoque of the Visitation Convent is so closely connected, two hundred French deputies, prostrate before the Eucharist, dedicated themselves and France to the Sacred Heart.This act of devotion inspired in the mind of a pious woman, whose name remains unknown, a vision of an International Eucharistic Congress to be held successively in Europe, and there grew in her a great desire to devote her life to the social salvation of the world through the Eucharist.Accordingly, she approached the venerable blind bishop, Mgr.Gaston de Segur.who entered into her project so warmly, that in 1879 Leo XIII.gave his blessing and promised his support to the new movement, and in 1880 a “Permanent Committee,” under Mgr.de Segur.was instituted to arrange for the First International Congress, to he held in 1881.Lille—1881.Consequently, from the 28th to the 30th of June, 1881, the university and industrial city of Lille, in the north of France, welcomed delegates from Italy, Belgium, Spain, Austria, England, Mexico, Chili and the Antilles to the First International Eucharistic Congress.The programme then adopted, though it has largely been developed, has remained the model for the following gatherings, namely: Acts of Eucharistic Worship.Conferences, and the Great Procession concluding the Congresses.(Continued in News Section.) “=== AL The Hotel du Government at Liege, Belgium, a building associated with the 2nd Congress.The Church of St.James at Lieae, Belgium, where the 3rd Congress was held in 1883.The Basilica of St.Cernin at Toulouse, where the 5th Congress was held in .he A PT * Fyne 33 gg je ré CAEN TE NS amie XL - woe ave.st ~ ON AEA id Br LE The Cathedral of Ste.Gudule at Brussels, where the 11th Congress was held.—— iS, REIMS.La Cathédrale.- Le Grand Portait The historic Cathedral at Rheims, France, where the French Kings were anointed, and where the 9th Congress was held.Exterior view of Cologne Cathedral, showing the magnificent twin spires 500 feet in height.Mi —— À.arme ma- — 4 THE STANDARD, MONTREAL, CANADA ab an THE KINGSTON REGATTA — The Crescent, the pride of the Watertown fleet, Te SN NN NN AN NAN LAN ATHLETICS IN CANADA—The members of the Valleyfield Association Football Team for the season of 1910.(Photo by Martin, Valleyfield.) 5 + - Lo 242 nain ft Pa agi a Yates Li: Lente Ti TY 5e A MM 0 A Es es the Canadian Canoe Association at St.Johns, Que.a IN THE MUSICAL WORLD—The best picture of Madame Melba, the world’s greatest singer, who will appear in Montreal at the Arena on the evening of Monday, September 12.This concert will be the greatest musical event | of the season.Madame Melba is being assisted in her English tour by Mr.Edmund Burke, a former Montrealer, and one of the great bassos of Covent Garden.NN ae Nm = 0 — Ras Pen A CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA—The “gallery” and some of the flotilla at the recent annual meet of om | ||Hall'sHairRenewer 000 ee MAKES THE HAIR GROW Perfectly satisfied with your hair ?Good ;
