By Matthew McCully There are plenty of different traditions that people share in celebration of the new year. For some it’s a family gathering, or a list of resolutions, or partying till the ball drops at midnight. This group of Townshippers likes to bid farewell to the previous year on the ice.For over 40 years now, this gang of hockey lovers has been getting together every Dec.31 for a friendly hockey game in Lennoxville.Started up by Kevin Doherty, the organizational torch was eventually passed on to Eric Mackeage, who has been setting up the game for the last three decades. While the game started out as good old shinny for the fun of it, in recent years the annual game has evolved into a fundraiser.Tuesday’s game raised $830, Mack- eage said. This year money will be split evenly between the Bishop’s University women’s hockey team and the seventh floor Oncology Department of the CHUS Fleurimont.Mackeage said getting a deal on the ice rental was a big help for the fundraiser.“Thank you, Bishop’s! It’s great support donating the ice time to make these fundraisers possible.” According to Mackeage, a total of 32 players hit the ice on Tuesday.“We had three full lines and two goalies,” he said. Some of the players are old friends, some are new to the gang.“There are probably around six originals from the beginning,” MacKeage explained, who still play.Mackeage made the teams and tried to make them as evenly matched as possible.“All of the games were really close,” he said.“There were no injuries, it was lots of fun.” Not that it matters, but Mackeage said the purple team came out on top, winning two of the three games played.MATTHEW MCCULLY Some might remember that last December (2018) I offered my take on John le Carrés penultimate work— A Legacy of Spies. This year, quite coincidentally, I offer Agent Running in the Field for your delectation.Die-hard le Carré fans will not be disappointed. There is enough fast-paced action, cross and double-cross potential to keep the reader on the edge of his seat. The story centers on Nat, a British field agent in his late forties. He has been called back to London where he faces the prospect of being put out to pasture by the Secret Intelligence Service. At the same time he must attempt to rebuild his rather strained relationships with his wife Prue and his daughter Steff.Years of assignments abroad have put definite strains on his home life.Nat frequents a swanky badminton club, and there he is sought out by Ed, an intense man in his mid- twenties, who is passionate about badminton and [drumroll!!!] politics.Nat is the club champion, and this young man is keen—almost obsessively so—to play against Nat.Now, le Carré fans know well enough that no young man who presents himself in this way can be simply what he seems. He isn’t.The pair maintain a steady pace of competitive games over several months, and through it all they exchange views on politics.Ed is virulently anti-Trump, anti-Brexit, and laments the oligopolis- tic drift of western democracies. Each man is somewhat cagey about divulging too much about his occupation.Nat, for obvious reasons, cannot reveal that he is a spy.Ed, for his own reasons, remains vague about his employment. There are a few other characters of note: Dominic Trench, an opportunistic and shifty head of section; Florence, an intense, hyper-efficient, and relentless young agent who is unsettling the old guard with her energy and drive.Nat manages to stave off forced retirement, and is put in charge of subsection Haven in the SIS to supervise operation Rosebud—an effort to derive intelligence from a Ukrainian oligarch with Putin contacts.Agent Running in the Field runs true to le Carré form.He has always sought to embed his works in contemporaneous events and problems. As I noted last year, the end of the Cold War put the kibosh on le Carré’s bread and butter plot lines and settings. His actual experience in Cold War intelligence operations imbued his works with a seamless sense of reality. The Soviet Union of Stalin and Khrushchev provided the malign “evil empire” which was constantly menacing western democracy in the Smiley/Karla trilogy of the mid-seventies.Le Carré gradually weaned himself from that plum subject matter, focusing on various hot international issues: drug cartels, terrorism, illegal arms trade; but the general consensus is that works that followed the cold war days constitute something of a denouement in his writing career.Agent Running in the Field focuses on the geopolitical impact of populism as manifested in the rise of Trump and Brexit. As the characters’ fates and fortunes converge we detect everywhere the driving forces of international oli- garchy—the rich and corrupt actors who attempt to influence politics for their own ends. That le Carré is a consummate story teller there can be no denying. He deftly lays out setting and character, paying attention to the minutiae. This is one of the great challenges—and attractions—in his technique. The reader must be ever vigilant in reading the signs that he provides. In the world he evokes, there are no accidents.Nothing is irrelevant.Everything means. So, this latest work will reward le Carré loyalists with a good dose of the immersive perplexity which is so characteristic of his work.In these latest works, however, there are some departures from vintage le Carré.Female characters, for instance. In his early works they are best at being inscrutable driving forces in the background. As, perhaps, a sign of our times, the female characters in Agent Running are front-and-centre unsettling forces— movers and shakers—who must be reckoned with. However, le Carré has always had a tendency to drift into caricature when it comes to female characters. They ring a little false.Another bizarrerie: mixed tenses.Perhaps he feels that a foolish tense consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, but one has to keep adjusting as past tense shifts to narrative present in mid-paragraph.Perhaps the most melancholy impression that we derive from the story is the sense that the protracted wars—WW II and the Cold War—fought in defence of freedom and democracy have given rise to perversions of democracy wherein the rich and powerful can make the voting masses dance to their drum.Another caveat—as the font size increases and the number of pages decrease in each passing le Carré novel, one detects a slackening in the pace of our 88-year-old master. It is not exactly like watching 50’s Doo-Wop performers at a PBS fundraiser, but it almost evokes that vibe.Agent Running in the Field is available in the Lennoxville Library. And from all of us, a very happy New Year! —Stephen Sheeran Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , January 3, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Weather TODAY: 60% CHANCE OF SHOWERS HIGH 4 LOW -2 SATURDAY: CLOUDY HIGH -1 LOW -9 SUNDAY: MIX OF SUN AND CLOUDS HIGH -7 LOW -10 MONDAY: SNOW HIGH -3 LOW -8 TUESDAY: 60% CHANCE OF FLURRIES HIGH -4 LOW -11 The Record e-edition There for you 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week.Wherever you are.Access the full edition of the Sherbrooke Record as well as special editions and 30 days of archives.Renew or order a new 12- month print subscription and get a 12-month online subscription for an additional $5 or purchase the online edition only for $125.00 Record subscription rates (includes Quebec taxes) For print subscription rates, please call 819-569-9528 or email us at billing@sherbrookerecord.com 12 month web only: $125.00 1 month web only: $11.25 Web subscribers have access to the daily Record as well as archives and special editions.Subscribing is as easy as 1,2,3: 1.Visit the Record website: www.sherbrookerecord.com 2.Click e-edition.3.Complete the form and wait for an email activating your online subscription.GO O D RE A D S Lennoxville library Agent running in the ?eld.or is it limping? Record Staff At the tail end of the holiday season, The Société protectrice des animaux (SPA de l'Estrie) is reminding pet owners to be vigilant and make sure that their cat or dog wears an identification tag at all times, even indoors. With all the visiting and opening and closing of front doors, many four-legged companions seized the opportunity and snuck out during the holidays.Since December 23rd, around 20 stray animals were brought to the SPA and more than 30 lost animals were reported to the organization.Fortunately, many of them were wearing their identification tags and their owners were quickly notified.Because of a lack of identification, reunions are not always successful. It can prove difficult to trace the family of a lost and unidentified animal.Identifying a pet with the SPA de l'Estrie medallion tells people that an animal has a family and is expected at home. The medallion helps ensure a pet's safety, not only in the event of a stray or runaway, but also in situations where, in the owner’s absence, it could be injured and need care.In addition to wearing identification tags, the SPA offered some simple tips to follow to minimize the stress of animals and also, avoid running away: Make sure your pet can easily get away from all the noise by dedicating a room where they can hide if they feel the need to do so.This quiet place will allow them to feel safe and to meet guests at their own pace. The leash can be an essential ally when your guests arrive. The primary purpose of using a leash is to keep your pet close to you and prevent it from jumping on visitors or running away from the household. When your pet calms down and has your full attention, you can let him go and greet your guests. It is recommended to give instructions to children as well as adults who will be in the presence of your pet.For example, ask them not to run after him when they try to hide and to take refuge in a quiet place.Play with them only when they come towards you and never give them table food.Friday , January 3, 2020 Page 3 Nadeau shared that he and Pinsonneault are still in the process of preparing more active fundraising events to help keep the matter alive in people’s hearts.LOCAL NEWS The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com COUNTRY DANCE CLASSES www.clubdansecountry.com Manon Levesque, Instructor For more information, call 819-636-0505 $9.00 per class New classes for beginners: THE HUT (A.N.A.F.) By Taylor McClure Special to The Record The year 2020 has officially begun! While new stories, headlines, and events will hit The Record pages this year, we thought this would be the perfect time to look back at some of the stories that have graced the pages of The Record in the last century.Flipping through the archives, we begin our review in 1919 just after the end of the First World War and then take a tour of a few of the stories that graced the pages of The Record 50 years later in 1969, and then 100 years later in 2019.100 Years Ago Germans sign peace treaty to end the First World War On June 28, 1919, Dr.Herman Mueller, German Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Dr.Johannes Bell, German Minister of the Colonies, sign the Treaty of Versailles as official representatives for Germany. They were the first of all delegates present at Versailles to sign the treaty. After four years of what many have deemed as one of the most horrific wars to occur in human history, the war is officially brought to an end.In celebration of the signing of the treaty, one of the most important peace treaties of the end of the war, students in France paraded the streets of Paris.Bishop’s College School student arrested Various valuable items were going missing from the rooms at Bishop’s College School, including a gold watch, which resulted in a mystery that needed to be solved. After a $250 ring was stolen from the wife of the college’s caretaker, a 14-year-old student named Alfred Humphries was suspected as the culprit. He was arrested on the charge of theft and eventually confessed to stealing the ring but clarified that he got rid of it somewhere after he became frightened. The police also stated at the time that they believed he was also responsible for the other thefts that took place.Fire destroys Cookshire barn Charles H.Edwards, a Cookshire local, lost his barn and outhouses, located on Main Street, after being completely destroyed in a fire on Dec.22, 1919.Someone who happened to be passing by the property at the time took notice of the flames and made people aware.Neighbors tried to help to control the blaze but the hay caught fire and very quickly spread to the outhouses causing much damage. They were, however, able to save Charles’ home, which would have also fallen to the flames without their many efforts. The cause of the fire was declared unknown at the time but it resulted in $2,000 worth of damage and two horses and one cow also lost their lives.50 Years Ago As many Sherbrooke will remember, 1969 marked the year that Alexander Galt Regional High-School officially opened its doors. The school was established following changes of the school system by the government with a shift from local high schools to regional high schools.Lennoxville’s former high school, known as Lennoxville High School, was also struggling to accommodate its rapidly growing student population and more was needed.Galt continues to serve the English community of the Townships to this day.The opening of Galt also welcomed the first North Shore students to the Eastern Townships. These students were from remote fishing villages in the very north of Quebec close to Labrador. These small villages did not have the resources to offer higher levels of learning but leaders of these small communities wanted youth to have the opportunity to pursue higher education.Galt welcomed these students into their school and Lennoxville locals opened up their homes so that they had a place to board while they were away from their families. While many of these students returned home, some kept put or came back and created a life for themselves in the Townships.Woodstock Music Festival Pure chaos. Those are the best words to describe the famous Woodstock Music Festival that took place in White Lake, New York from August 15 to the 18, 1969.While the Woodstock Musical Festival is now a pinnacle moment in music history, those who came up with the idea to hold such a festival were were not prepared for the turn out they received, or the disaturious weather, which resulted in many issues.Over half a million people made their way to the 600-acre dairy farm where the festival was taking place to make it one of the largest music festivals ever staged.Traffic was bumper to bumper for miles and people had to wait hours upon hours to reach their destination. Many people abandoned their cars due to mechanical issues, like overheating radiators, or because they knew it would take less time to walk there. The festival lacked the proper facilities to hold all of these people and at one point there was no more water or food.It rained most of the weekend, which turned the land into a pool of water and mud. Many festivalgoers didn’t have the proper clothing or tools necessary for this weather and to camp there for the entire weekend.Despite the chaos however, music lovers stuck it out to enjoy the sounds of some of the world’s most famous musicians such as Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Joan Baez, Ravi Shankar, and many more. The Manson Family Murders The Manson Family, a cult led by Charles Manson in California, made headlines when they killed five people, including actress Sharon Tate, on August 9, 1969.The cult was described as a “hippy” group and they were involved in various crimes in the late 1960s such as assault, theft, and petty crimes.Charles Mansions established his cult by pursuing young women 2019 The Stanley Cup comes to Town Earlier this year, St-Louis Blues left wing and Fleurimont local David Perron brought the cup to Sherbrooke at the Léopold-Drolet arena for almost 2,000 Townshippers to see.Perron and his team made history this year by winning their first Stanley Cup in the franchise’s 52 year history. He wanted to bring the celebration to his hometown.Township- pers were very excited with some lining up outside the arena’s doors starting at 5 a.m.The 2019 Election 2019 marked a Federal election year for Canadians and it was definetly a nail- biter.Canadians were looking for change and their choice of canidates included Justin Trudeau, Andrew Scheer, Yves- François Blanchet, Jagmeet Singh, Elizabeth May, and Maxime Bernier. In the end, the Liberals won a minority government.November Flood It’s a flood that not many of us will forget.Starting Halloween night, the Eastern Townships was hit with quite the storm.Over 34,000 households in Monteregie and the Estrie region were left without power and the St-Francis River reached just under 25 feet causing extreme flooding. Those who lived on the bottom floors of the apartment buildings in the Little Forks area were evacuated from their homes and many lost everything; including their vehicles.According to our archives, the highest level on record for the river in Sherbrooke was 26 feet in 1982 making this flood one of the worst in Sherbrooke’s history. The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , January 3, 2020 Page 5 100 years in review RECORD ARCHIVES St.Louis Blues’ left winger David Perron poses with the Stanley Cup.RECORD ARCHIVES Woodstock Festival By Amy Reichelt BrainsCAN Research Fellow at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University Have you ever woken up in the morning (or afternoon) in a cloud of worry after having a few drinks the night before? As this holiday season comes to an end — after weeks of Christmas festivities, holiday parties and New Year celebrations — many of you may be nursing some hangover anxiety, or “hangxiety,” after getting just a little too merry. As a neuroscientist researching how food and drink affect brain function, let me explain how drinking alcohol can trigger hangxiety the next day. From tequila to endorphins and dopamine Alcoholic beverages — beer, wine or spirits — disrupt the delicate balance of chemicals in the brain, called neurotransmitters.Alcohol exerts a cocktail of effects on brain function that can be enjoyable at the time, but much less fun the next day.The pleasurable effects of alcohol are due to the release of endorphins — natural opioid hormones in the brain.Good feelings also come from alcohol increasing the release of the dopamine by activating the brain’s reward system — the mesolimbic pathway.Dopamine release reinforces behaviours — making it more likely for us to do whatever caused the dopamine surge again. So, we quickly learn that the shot of tequila or glass of wine made us feel good, making us want more. But alcohol affects more than just the rewarding chemicals in the brain.Alcohol alters levels of neurotransmitters that control brain activity and function.Brain imaging shows that alcohol decreases activity in the prefrontal cortex and temporal lobe — key centres for de- cision-making, self control and memory.Feelings of anxiety, unease and stress Alcohol increases activity of the brain’s main inhibitory chemical GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) by mimicking its effects at synapses — the connections between neurons.GABA reduces a neuron’s activity, and alcohol exaggerates this effect.Increased GABA promotes feelings of relaxation and calmness, making us more sociable and less stressed. After several more drinks, alcohol blocks the glutamate system.Glutamate is the main excitatory transmitter in the brain, and plays an important role in forming memories and emotions.Balance between GABA and glutamate is vital for optimum brain functioning.Alcohol shifts this balance.Alcohol is called a central nervous system depressant because it both increases inhibitory GABA and decreases excita- tory glutamate. When your brain senses high levels of GABA and low levels of glutamate it quickly adapts to counteract this imbalance.Compensatory changes result in low levels of GABA and increased glutamate that cause feelings of anxiety, unease and stress, enduring into the next day.Oh no … did I really do that? After several alcoholic drinks, glutamate transmission slows down in the medial temporal lobe — the brain region where memories are formed. The morning after can deliver some shocking memories.(Shutterstock) Alcohol-induced amnesia, or “blackouts,” are caused by a rapid increase in blood alcohol levels, often due to binge drinking.A binge is defined as more than four or five drinks in two hours for women and men, respectively. In the sober brain, memories are formed after information is transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory. This process is called memory consolidation.Memories for events can then be retrieved and remembered.Alcohol interferes with the consolidation and retrieval of memories, leading to confusion and uncertainty the next day. These hazy memories of the night’s events (“Oh no … did I really do that?!”) can cause great anxiety.Alcohol also dramatically disrupts sleep quality, reducing REM-phase sleep when dreams occur.REM sleep is critical for encoding long-term memories. So, a bad night’s sleep after drinking alcohol can cause memories to become fragmented.Shy people do suffer more Not everyone experiences hangxiety, but some may experience it more than others.A recent study found that the intensity of a hangxiety experience varies between people based on personality traits, while controlling for alcohol consumed and blood alcohol levels.Individuals with more reported shyness traits experienced increased levels of anxiety following alcohol consumption than people who had lower baseline levels of shyness. Can you avoid hangxiety? The only guaranteed way to avoid hangover anxiety is to not drink alcohol. You can, however, reduce the adverse effects of alcohol by drinking less.By spacing out drinks with glasses of water, you can avoid the rapid increase in blood alcohol that impairs memory and stay hydrated to lessen the headache the next day.Amy Reichelt receives funding from The Australian Research Council and a CFREF BrainsCAN Tier 1 Research Fellowship.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , January 3, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Alcohol also dramatically disrupts In swim suits and shorts and bikinis they strolled, Clearly unfazed by the bleak winter cold.Like lemmings the gaggle converged on the hole.Carleton and Steve took a leadership role.As veterans of freezing they took to the waters, Then called to their hovering friends, sons and daughters. Now Heidi, Mel, Aida, Carl, Ingrid, be quick! Allana, John, both of the Davids and Nicks Now Laura, Matt, André, Jon, Alex, Mylène Mary, Augusta, Jean-Loup and Sandrine.Despite medical, legal, and priestly advice, They tore off their robes and stepped onto the ice.And if that weren’t enough to create a sensation, One hundred percent had advanced education!! The watchers, convened on the porch, young and old, Say that over two dozen jumped into the cold. They plunged to the depths, their bodies entire, Then Splashed away! a race on foot (in the forest or an urban setting), cross-country skiing, mountain biking or even in a wheelchair in some cases. The expression "running and thinking" sums up the sport, accessible to all, which allows the development of both physical and mental abilities.Participants don't have to be athletes to race.Orienteering can be practiced alone or in a team by people of all ages.Equipped with a map of the trails specifically made for the race, a compass and a map of stopping points, competitors will need to find and visit the beacons in the order shown on the map.The race will combine skiing skills with those of a navigator.Come and participate in large numbers in this friendly race, the first "Ski- O" in the Eastern Townships.Next dates to remember: Ski-O Richmond on Jan.25 and Urban Race in Magog on Feb.9.Check the website for more information: https://accroosport.org/accueil.Hands-on activities at local science museums Record Staff Those looking for a little hands-on fun over what’s left of the holidays still have some options available at the local science museums.Inspired by the childhood inventiveness of their namesake, Joseph-Armand Bombardier, the Bombardier Museum in Valcourt is hosting “the hackers' workshop” until January 5.In the same way that old J.A.built a clockwork locomotive at age thirteen just by tinkering around with materials available on- hand, the museum is inviting local youngsters to transform an old toy into something new in “the hackers' workshop.” The concept is simple: dismantle, imagine and create. The Sherbrooke Museum of Science and Nature, meanwhile is home to a travelling exhibit from the Museum of World Religions in Nicolet called “Noah's Ark According To Claude Lafortune.” Presented until January 12, 2020, the exhibit draws on the creations from the 1970s Radio-Canada television program “L’Évangile en papier” which retold biblical stories with beautifully made paper characters. The current exhibitions features the works of paper artist Claude Lafortune on the theme of “Noah’s Ark”, offering visitors the chance to discover this classic tale in a poetic, playful and participative way while also reflecting on the major questions raised by the story. We meet Noah, his wife, and all the species of animals about to board the ark.For the occasion, a workshop called “Animals of Noah's Ark,” will be held on January 4 and 5 that will allow visitors to slip into Mr.Lafortune's shoes by making their own animal out of paper. This workshop will be supervised by Camille Lavoie, a professional artist, and will be taking place on January 4 and 5 from 9:30 a.m.to 11:30 a.m.and from 1:30 p.m.to 3:30 p.m.at a cost of $5 for members or $10 for non-members plus $5 per additional child. The workshop is designed for children 5 to 15 years of age and those interested in participating must register in advance by contacting Marie-Claude Beaulieu at 819 564-3200 extension 246, or marie- claude.beaulieu@mns2.ca Your week on TV WEEKDAY MORNING Bell Star 6 AM 6:30 7 AM 7:30 8 AM 8:30 9 AM 9:30 10 AM 10:30 11 AM 11:30 WCAX # - - Channel 3 News Morning CBS This Morning Rachael Ray The Doctors The Price Is Right WPTZ % - - NBC5 News Today Today Live with Kelly and Ryan Today 3rd Hour Today With Hoda & Jenna CBMT & 206 301 Daybreak (:11) Addison True Rainbow (:08) PJ Masks (:20) PJ Masks What He Ate The Moblees Arthur Daniel Tiger Dragons’ Den CHLT _ 107 718 F Doués ››› “Trolls en boîte” (2014) (DVS) (SC) (:14) “Whisper 2 : l’aventure continue” (2015) Hanna Höppner.Premiere.(SC) (:23) ››› “Beethoven: une star est née” M Salut bonjour (N) (SC) (9:59) La vraie nature (SC) Le tricheur (:29) Bien T W Th WMTW ( - - WMTW News 8 at 6am Good Morning America Live with Kelly and Ryan Tamron Hall The View CKSH ) 108 - Toc toc toc Les roltronics Gar?eld et cie Belle Jack camions NoteRythme RDI matin On va se le dire Ricardo Silence CKMI + - - Global News Morning The Morning Show Sarah’s House Income: Vaca Tamron Hall CFCF , 205 312 Your Morning Your Morning Your Morning Your Morning Your Morning Live with Kelly and Ryan The Marilyn Denis Show The View WVNY 6 - - Local 22 News This Morning Good Morning America The Mel Robbins Show Paid Program Var.Programs The View WUTV > - - Paid Program Paid Program 2 on Your Side Daybreak Var.Programs Couples Court The 700 Club Judge Mathis Judge Jerry Judge Jerry CFKS ?106 726 F NVL (SC) Moment V Moment V NVL en bref Moment V NVL en bref Moment V NVL en bref Histoire Infopublicité Intemporel ’ (SC) M Infopublicité T W Th WUHF - 363 Good Day Rochester Good Day Rochester Good Day Rochester Judge Mathis The Wendy Williams Show Judge Jerry Judge Jerry WETK - - Classical World News Curious Nature Cat Wild Kratts Molly of Denali Xavier Riddle Let’s Go Luna! Grease loaf pan.I also line with parchment paper. In a small bowl or measuring cup, stir together milk, orange juice, cherry juice and vanilla. In a small bowl, or measuring cup, combine the milk, orange juice, cherry juice and vanilla. In another bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. With an electric beater cream the butter and add the sugars gradually and beat until fluffy.Add the eggs one at a time and beat until incorporated.Add the flour mixture alternating with the milk mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.Do not overmix.Stir in the cherries by hand mixing just until they are blended in.Transfer the batter to the loaf pan.Using a knife, smooth the top of the loaf.I add some cherry pieces to the top.Bake for approximately 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of loaf comes out clean.Let loaf rest in pan for 10 minutes then turn out on a wire rack to cool completely before cutting.I often glaze my loaf with cherry glaze.Use 1 cup icing sugar, and add a few tbsp.of cherry juice to make it a spreading consistency.Thel’s Kitchen can be found at: http://thelmaday.blogspot.com/ Her everyday blog, Thelma’s Days, can be found at http://thelma-day.blogspot.com/ Thelma Day Thel’s Kitchen Page 10 January 3 - January 9, 2020 TV Listings TALK Your week on TV FRIDAY EVENING JANUARY 3, 2020 Bell Star 6 PM 6:30 7 PM 7:30 8 PM 8:30 9 PM 9:30 10 PM 10:30 11 PM 11:30 12 AM WCAX # - - Channel 3 News at Six (N) CBS Evening News Entertainment Tonight (N) Hawaii Five-0 Higgins gives Tani some personal advice.Magnum P.I.Junior is kidnapped as leverage.(N) ’ Blue Bloods A series of ambulance robberies.(N) ’ Channel 3 News (:35) The Late Show With Stephen Colbert ’ Å WPTZ % - - NBC5 News at 6 (N) NBC Nightly News - Holt Jeopardy! average person what they dreamed of doing at age twelve, it’s likely that it wouldn’t have much of a connection to their adult life. Not so with Mirko Martineau of Stanstead, who later this month will be headed to Oklahoma to compete in the International Finals Rodeo (IFR), the championship event of the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA), as a competitive bull rider.“I didn’t start at twelve, but I started seeing it on TV and the internet around then and I found it really cool,” Mar- tineau said “I asked my parents, ‘hey mom and dad, can I ride bulls?’ and of course their first answer was that there’s no way in hell I was going to do that.” The young bull rider said that it took him another three years to get his parents to agree, but the dream finally became a reality for him during a one-day bull riding workshop at the Tardif school in Thetford Mines.“I got on two steers that day and I just got real hooked,” he recalled.“After that I’ve just been progressing and progressing as much as I can.” Now 18, Martineau has quickly bucked his way onto the competitive scene.Having only started to compete in 2017 and set back slightly by a broken nose and concussion in the summer of 2018, the rider told The Record that he was ‘blown away’ with his progress in the 2019 season that led up to his qualification for the IFR.“It was quite a fun year.” The speed and energy of competitive bull riding can give some spectators the impression that there’s not much to the sport other than grabbing on and not letting go, but Martineau explained that things are not so simple.“There’s not really a set technique, everyone has their own style, but it’s a lot more than just holding on with your hands,” he said, noting that staying on the bull for the eight seconds needed to be judged is a full-body effort.“You’re not going to out-strength a 2,000 pound bull, so you’ve just got to follow him. It’s really a dance.” For those who make it to the eight second mark, a score is given out of 100, split between two judges. Each judge can give 25 points to the cowboy and 25 points to the bull based on how controlled the ride ends up being.“It’s very, very rare to go over 87 or 88 in the IPRA,” Martineau said, “and there is no perfect ride.” The bull rider said he thinks the biggest misconception about his sport is the idea that riders are just climbing up on the back of any old bull.“It’s not just beef bulls, it’s really bulls that are born and bred to be trained,” he said arguing that only one in ten bulls is considered to have what it takes to be a good riding bull.“There’s a whole science to it,” he added.Although he didn’t linger on the topic long, Martineau also argued against the idea that riding bulls are poorly treated.“Really they work for eight seconds, and for them it’s not even necessarily work. They’re playing,” he said. When it comes to getting into the world of bull riding, Martineau said there’s only really one approach.“The best way to practice is just to get on bulls, there’s no other way,” he said.“You won’t be good by getting on about 50 head of bulls. You’ve got to get on as much as you can.” Three years in, the rider estimated that he’s been on somewhere between 200 and 250 different animals, with maybe 15-17 of those being bulls that he’s ridden for the full 8 seconds.“It’s unbelievable how much I’ve learned about the sport,” the rider added.“It looks sometimes like an unplanned thing where this guy is just jumping on a random bull, but we’re really trained.” Martineau reflected on the fact that every bull has his own personality and quirks.Larger bulls ride differently than smaller ones, he said, and where some are feisty, others can be quite playful.“Most of them have a pattern,” he said, claiming that a rider can get to know which way a bull might turn and when they’ll buck over time. While describing his as “a weird sport” because of the way that it doesn’t have the regular games and structure of something like hockey or soccer, Mar- tineau described his current level as being equivalent to being a semi-pro in the bull riding world. While that sounds prestigious, he pointed out that it comes with big costs and time commitments during rodeo season as he makes his way from one competition to the next.“We work 40 hour weeks, and then on the weekend it’s the rodeo,” he said, estimating that his move up to the IFR might increase his annual costs to as much as $10,000, not counting all of the lost time involved in getting from one event to the next across North America. The logistical challenges, however, don’t dull the rider’s passion.“I fell in love with the sport and the whole rodeo process,” he said, praising the supportive.atmosphere at each rodeo.Although one might imagine bull riders to be a rough and tumble bunch Mar- tineau said that his experience, even at the highest competitive levels, is that the riders end up being like a big family behind the scenes.“Everyone helps everyone out and it’s real fun” he said.“We all like the same sport and we all have the same kind of craziness in us (…) It looks like a competition between riders, but the big competition is between you and the bull.” PHOTOS COURTESY MIRKO MARTINEAU Festival Western de St Tite 2019 on "White and Alive" from 6DF bucking bulls Festival Canada's quest for gold remains on track at the world junior hockey championship.Alexis Lafreniere scored and added an assist in his return from injury as part of a resounding 6-1 victory over Slovakia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.Barrett Hayton added two goals and an assist for the Canadians, Connor McMichael, Jacob Bernard-Docker and Liam Foudy also scored, and Joel Hofer picked up his third straight win.Dylan Cozens, Jamie Drysdale and Calen Addison each added two assists.Oliver Okuliar replied for the overmatched Slovaks.Samuel Hlavaj took the loss in goal.Lafreniere was back in the lineup after missing the last two games with a knee injury suffered in a humiliating 6-0 setback to Russia last Saturday, Canada's worst defeat in the under-20 tournament's 44-year history. It was originally believed the Canadians would automatically get a rematch with the Russians, who beat Switzerland 3-1 earlier Thursday, in the semifinals. But they instead had to wait until later Thursday to find out their next opponent after the International Ice Hockey Federation recently changed its medal-round format _ and neglected to update the official website _ to a setup that sees teams reseeded after the quarters based on rankings at the event.Lafreniere took up his usual spot on Canada's top line with Hayton and Nolan Foote only to see the latter assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a check to the head on Slovakia's Kristian Kovacik just 53 seconds into the first period at Ostravar Arena.Sporting their black jerseys for a second straight game, the Canadians managed to kill off the penalty, with Hofer making a big save off the rush, and then grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:47.Cozens, who replaced Foote on the No.1 trio, pressured the puck on the forecheck and Lafreniere passed quickly in front to Hayton, who beat Hlavaj for his team- leading fourth goal of the world juniors.Lafreniere's return to action looked to be in serious doubt a week ago as the projected No.1 pick at the 2020 NHL draft and reigning CHL Player of the Year lay in agony on the ice after twisting his left leg on an awkward fall against Russia. He had to be helped off by teammates, but the 18- year-old from Saint-Eustache, Que., who has 70 points in 32 games with the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this season, watched practice less than 24 hours later minus a knee brace or noticeable limp.He took part in Canada's skate Wednesday before the official all-clear was announced a few hours later.Hlavaj _ statistically the QMJHL's best goalie in 2019- 20 with the league-leading Sherbrooke Phoenix _ did his best to keep the Slovaks in it, but Canada scored four times in the middle period to put things out of reach.McMichael bagged his second at 1:21 on a 2- on-1, Bernard-Docker added his first after a nice toe-drag around a sliding defender at 3:42, and Foudy made a slick move on a breakaway at 9:02 for a 4-0 lead.Canada, which suffered a devastating overtime defeat at this stage of the tournament to the Finns in Vancouver last year, then went to the power play, with Lafreniere taking a pass in the high slot and wiring his second of the tournament at 10:50.The 17-time gold medallists added a sixth one minute into the third on another man advantage when Hayton buried his fifth. That spelled the end of the afternoon for Hlavaj, who was replaced by Samuel Vyletelka.Okuliar, who plays on the same line as Cozens with the WHL's Lethbridge Hurricanes, broke the shutout bid at 6:10 when he blasted a shot past Hofer.Without a point in the tournament, 17-year-old Quinton Byfield, who's expected to go high at June's draft, hit the post midway through the third.Canada finished atop Group B with a 3-1 record, while Slovakia's only victory in Group A was a 3-1 triumph over Kazakhstan. The Slovaks lost their other three round-robin games by a combined 21-5 scoreline _ 8-1 to Finland, 7-2 to Switzerland and 6-2 to Sweden.Canada hasn't won the tournament in Europe since 2008, when the Czech Republic last hosted. The Runner in Red novel, based on a real-life Boston Marathon legend about the first woman to run a marathon in North America, has inspired a RUNNER IN RED race series to raise funds to cure lung cancer. We talk to Tom Murphy, author of the mystery novel and founder of a charity to cure lung cancer.Tom is also the author, with John J.Kelley winner of the 1957 Boston Marathon, of the Boston Marathon history book, Just Call Me Jock.Tell us about the Runner in Red and the Boston Marathon legend that inspired your race series. In 1951, fifteen years before history knew of the first woman to run in the Boston Marathon, a group of Canadian runners insisted they spotted a woman sneak into the race. She “wore red,” according to the Canadians. They tried to get Jock Semple, race co-director, to pay attention, but Jock did not believe them. This was back in the days when not only were women forbidden to compete, but nobody believed a woman would WANT to run.The Canadians took their claim home to Toronto where the story got additional play in the papers, but ultimately their contention was never proven and thus the “runner in red” passed into Boston Marathon lore. How did you come to write a novel to “search” for this mystery runner “in red?” When I was writing Just Call Me Jock with John J Kelley, Jock talked about the incident.I filed it away with the idea that one day I would write the story as a mystery, love story and family drama. My novel Runner in Red came out in April 2018 and I’m contributing proceeds to a cure lung cancer charity I created with family and friends, called the Runner in Red/Barb’s Beer Foundation. We’ll offer our first Runner in Red 5K race March 15 on Long Island in NY.The hope is we can grow the project to become a national Runner in Red Race series to raise funds to cure lung cancer. It sounds like you have a strong commitment to the cause.Where does that come from?My late wife, Barb, was a Boston Marathon runner. She and I ran about a dozen marathons together. She got nonsmoker’s lung cancer out of the blue in 2007 and fought it for six years before she passed away in 2013.She fought hard to create awareness for the need to cure lung cancer. Many people don’t know it, but lung cancer takes the lives of more women than any other cancer. After she passed away, we created a beer – Barb’s Beer – to raise funds for a cure. After Runner in Red came out in 2018, I decided to combine the two projects – Runner in Red and Barb’s Beer – to expand the charity campaign. All runners who compete in our Runner in Red race March 15 will get a free Barb’s Beer. The race and the beer make a nice combination, and make happy runners! How do you plan to get the race series off the ground? We’re in the process of enlisting sponsors. There are many companies, as well as individuals, who have interest in the cause.Companies have employees who have been “touched” by lung cancer, and the same goes for individuals.People are looking for a way to contribute to something that creates a positive outcome – we believe the Runner in Red race series can be that cause for people.Everything starts small, obviously, but it sounds like you have a big vision.A marathon starts with one step – so does a charity campaign. We’re moving down the road nicely, though. We started the Barb’s Beer project in 2014 and so far Barb’s Beer is offered in Washington State, Massachusetts and New York. That puts us at the five-mile mark (metaphorically) in a marathon. We’ll offer our inaugural Runner in Red 5K race at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, Long Island, New York. We’ve lined up a great tavern in Garden City, Prost, to offer a post-race brunch and party with music and a free pint of Barb’s Beer for competitors. The Board of the Garden City Turkey Trot, one of the most prestigious races on Long Island, has endorsed us and that – along with support from New York running clubs - should help generate a strong turnout of runners. Our goal is to have a good first race – make it fun for everyone – then leverage that momentum to enlist more sponsors to grow and become a true race series.Where will your second Runner in Red race be?We’ve got many options. We’ve worked with Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, the famous gym where Muhammed Ali trained, so we may partner with Gleason’s to offer a race in Brooklyn. Also, Atlas Distributing in Worcester, MA, partners with us on Barb’s Beer in MA – that could offer an option for a race in Worcester.Again, ONE step at a time. But the ultimate goal is to get across the finish line and help find a cure for lung cancer. How can people learn more?Go to runnerinred.com to see more about the novel, the race, the cause – and Barb’s Beer.Friday , January 3, 2020 Page 17 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind BromeCounty News Jesse Bryant Sales Manager Let our readers know about your products & services Tel.: 450-242-1188 Fax: 450-243-5155 email: jbryant@sherbrookerecord.com Runner in Red mystery novel inspires race to cure lung cancer Lafreniere, Canada thump Slovakia to advance to semi?nals at world juniors Local Sports Page 18 Friday, January 3, 2020 production@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Death Death Death In Memoriam George Evan COOTE It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Evan at the Wales Home, Richmond, QC on December 24, 2019 at the age of 89 with family by his side.Son of the late Norman Coote and the late Grace Smith.Evan leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 65 years Freda (Clark) and son Lyman and his daughter Kim (Roger).Cherished grampa of Jenny, Jancie (Cody), Wanda (Luke), Vanessa (Keith), Jillian (Craig), Logan, Angela (Ben) and Zachary.Great grandpa of Sydney, McCabe, Haiden, Kiran, Wyatt, Ava, Mallory, Lenai, Breann, Payton, Hailey, Braden.Predeceased by sons Nathan, Trevor, Terry, daughter Karen and brothers Lyman, Galen, Gordon and Elwin. Also predeceased by 3 half brothers and 5 half sisters. He also leaves to mourn his daughter-in-law Julie (late Terry) sisters- in-law Margaret, Hazel (Reg), Marjorie (William), brother-in-law Neal Lester (Sandra) and sister-in-law Nicole Clark (late Lawrence). He will be sadly missed by his nieces, nephews and cousins.A visitation and service will be held at a later date. For those who wish to donate in Evan’s memory may be made to the South Durham United Church c/o Mary Gunter, 230 Gregoire St.South Durham, QC J0H 2C0 would be appreciated. Each Tuesday we had a candle lighting and advent reading in the dining rooms which reminded us of the reason for the season. The big event of the month was our Christmas Banquet where almost 300 people, residents and their families, gathered in the Grand Hall for a traditional Christmas meal and service which included music from The Porter family and Karen McKenna. The service included a time for sharing where some residents and guests shared memories of Christmas past to show what Christmas means to them.We had many games and trivia activities related to the holidays like Christmas Family Feud, Name that Christmas Carol, and Christmas Time Trivia.Christmas always brings with it rooms filled with song, and this year was no different as we hosted North Hatley Elementary School for some delightful carolling and piano playing, as well as a group from Hope Community Church who caroled through our halls one Saturday evening spreading cheer. We cozied up one afternoon with a nostalgic Christmas movie, Miracle on 34th street, which brought back beautiful memories of Christmas past.Just before Christmas we had a visit with Santa himself as he delivered cards made by North Hatley Elementary students, Christmas cookies, and hot cocoa to each of our 121 residents. To finish off the year we will be having out New Year’s Eve party where we look back at the past year, dream of the year to come, and we will throw in a bit of 1920’s trivia to remind us where we were 100 years ago! 12 years. We got along ?ne when his grown kids were out of the picture, but now they’re back living with him.His youngest is 21, yet he treats them like infants. The daughters are manipulating and controlling. When I bring up my feelings about the situation, he accuses me of being jealous and insecure.I feel I’ve wasted years in a relationship going nowhere.I always helped him with rent, paying up to $700 a month, even though his kids don’t pay rent.Recently, I moved out.His response to my moving out was “We’re glad you’re gone!” — Feeling Left Out Dear Feeling: I, too, am glad you’re out of that house. Now you need to get out of the relationship.Having been in it for 12 years is not a justi?cation to stay in it another second.Ahead of you is the rest of your life, and I believe the coming years can be your best.If you’re having trouble ?nding the strength to seek out that better future, I encourage you to seek therapy. You deserve so much better than what you’re getting now.Dear Annie: Hurricane Irma hit my neighborhood two years ago.I need access to electricity for my CPAP, nebulizer and oxygen concentrator, and so I went to the hospital before the storm hit.My nephew thought that I acted like a 3-year-old.We had a wonderful relationship before the storm, but Irma changed all that.Since then, I’ve read about non- compliant nursing homes and assisted-living communities whose residents died during the storm. How can I convince my nephew that I did the right thing?— Safe Senior Dear Safe: Your nephew thought it was immature of you to seek shelter at a hospital during a hurricane?I’m ?ummoxed. But rather than continuing to try to convince him, let it be enough to know that you did nothing wrong, and divert your energy instead toward developing a thorough disaster preparedness plan.Start by letting your power company, local police and local ?re department know that you are oxygen-depen- dent. The Red Cross offers a free downloadable guide on its website entitled “Disaster Preparedness: For Seniors By Seniors” that includes some additional tips if and when the next storm hits.Dear Annie: My mom was always focused on helping others and would gladly give whatever she had if she felt someone else would bene?t.She had serious health challenges as well.In late November a few years ago, we found out she needed surgery which was scheduled for right after Christmas.I wanted to give her something extra special for Christmas.I contacted family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers and the groups where she volunteered and asked them to tell me about the difference my mom made in their lives.I received phone calls, letters, emails and cards with wonderful stories full of love and gratitude about my mom.For my mom, it was never about what she had or what she could get, but always about what she could give.I placed everything I received in a three-ring binder. The night before her surgery, I read some of the stories with her.She smiled as I read, and we both cried.Mom got through the surgery and died a few years later. When my sisters and I were going through everything, we found the book. They gave it to me.I read it often.I am sharing this story with you hoping it will encourage others to share how someone has made a difference in their life before they leave this earth.— Loving and Grateful Daughter Dear Loving: I absolutely love this idea. The holidays have come and gone, but all year long we have the opportunity to let loved ones know how special they are to us and how important they are to their communities. We need not wait until they’re gone to express our gratitude for knowing them.Thank you for this reminder.“Ask Me Anything: A Year South won with his king and, suitably fooled, ran the heart eight, losing two tricks to East’s heart nine and heart ace. That great deceptive play was awarded the Richard Freeman Junior Deal of the Year award from the International Bridge Press Association. The journalist prize went to John Hurd, who was the unlucky declarer.
