McDonald’s?Reviewed by Vince Cuddihy Ben H.Winters’ The Last Policeman (2012) is the ?rst part of a trilogy that includes Countdown City (2013) and World of Trouble (2014).Winters blends elements of science ?c- tion with detective ?ction to create a new twist in crime novels. The story begins with the news that Asteroid 2011GV, a chunk of rock about the size of the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, is on a collision course with Earth. There was hope that its trajectory would take it past this planet, and it got lost to Earth observers when it aligned with the sun, but now that it has re-emerged there is no question that it will impact in six months time.People are reacting strangely to this impending catastrophe. Many are committing suicide.Others are cashing out their savings, quitting their jobs and setting off to pursue their bucket list.It is a combination of these two phenomena that introduce us to Hank Palace, a newly promoted detective in the Concord New Hampshire police department.Even though Hank is only a rookie cop, he has been promoted to detective because his predecessor has decided to chuck his badge and set off to ful?ll his dreams in the little time he has left.Hank ?nds himself investigating the putative suicide of Peter Anthony Zell, who has been found with a belt around his neck and hanging from a horizontal rail in a stall in the men’s room of a McDonald’s restaurant.Hank has his doubts about the circumstances. He is not sure that the deceased has died in this place. For one thing, he is too tall to be strangled at so low a height; so Hank thinks he died somewhere else and has been brought to this location. The belt raises suspicions too.The dead man is still wearing the belt that holds his pants up; the belt around his neck is a very fancy and very new, and sold only in the most exclusive shops in the area.Who goes out and buys an expensive belt when he knows he will be dead in a couple of days?Further enquiries provide a set of con?icting pictures about the victim, who was an actuary with a local insurance company. The man was a mathematical wizard. His family—his sister and her husband—say he was badly depressed and they are not surprised that he took his own life.Zell’s boss—who is using alcohol to ease the transition towards the demolition of the planet— and his co-workers report that the victim was fascinated by the impending peril and has been keeping detailed scrap books about the asteroid’s approach to Earth.Palace’s fellow cops feel he is wasting his time looking for a possible murderer.Even if he can actually catch someone, there is no chance that the accused will ever stand trial, let alone get convicted.Palace sees it the other way around; if he can make an arrest, the killer is guaranteed to spend the rest of his life in prison, even if that is only a few months. One thing Palace does learn is that Zell had been a drug user, and may have been dealing drugs to help pay for his habit. He had managed to get off cocaine, but the impending doom had got him back into drugs. So now Palace may be chasing a drug traf?cker as well as a murderer. To which his fellow cops make the same rejoinder: Who cares? If people want to spend their remaining time in a narcotic haze, what difference does it make to a society that won’t exist in another one hundred days?Palace is beginning to think that his fellow of?cers may be smarter than he is.Then a close friend of Zell’s dies in a ?re.This may also be an accident, but the ?re looks suspicious. When one of Zell’s co-workers is also killed, there is no question about murder; she has been shot at close range.Palace is motivated to step up his efforts. He also realizes that he is dealing with someone who is pretty ruthless, and that Palace himself may be the next target. His challenge is to motivate the other detectives to help him out, even though they think he has brought his problems on himself. This is an intriguing book. Not only is it a good mystery story, but it also raises important questions about how people will react in the face of near certain doom.Is Palace right to keep on trying? Are the other cops right to just go through the motions? Are the ones who quit work entirely making the correct response?Or are the people who quit life entirely the wise ones?Winters, who lives in Los Angeles, is quite a proli?c writer. He has ten novels to his credit, including both satirical and children’s novels. He has also published three books of poetry and several plays. He has been nominated for several literary awards. He won the Philip K.Dick Award for Countdown City and an Edgar Award for The Last Policeman. The Last Policeman is now available at the Lennoxville Library.Follow email: jbryant@sherbrookerecord.com Champlain sorting out how to welcome new students without meeting in person By Gordon Lambie According to Nancy Beattie, Campus Director at Champlain College in Lennoxville, trying to plan for the fall semester this year is turning out to be an enormous puzzle. After a winter semester that was pushed out of the classroom and onto the internet at just about the halfway point, the work of trying to ?gure out how to meet government-mandated learning objectives is proving to be very complex.“It’s already a huge transition from high school to college, but given that there was this massive disruption of all educational institutions in the middle of March and then this optional return (for high school students), we’re recognizing that the academic gap has the potential to be a lot more signi?cant and the challenges to that transition may be more signi?cant as well,” Beat- tie said, sharing that at this point it is hard to say what form classes in the fall will even take.“We know that there’s a good chance that we may be allowed on (to campus) and then be sent off partway through he fall semester as well.” Even in a situation where school is allowed to start up in person in August, the campus director pointed out that the college simply doesn’t have the space or resources available to convert its existing teaching model to a complete, in person, physical distancing approach.“We don’t physically have enough space, nor do we have enough teachers to be able to subdivide and deliver all that content, nor do we have the resources to hire more teachers even if we had the classroom space,” Beattie said.“It’s a very big puzzle, but we’re working to ?nd a constructive solution.” Not knowing exactly what the future holds, the campus director told The Record that the college is working on a plan that would allow almost all activity to take place outside the walls of the physical building, including its summer orientation.“We want to engage our new students, make them feel welcome and connected, and let them know what’s available to them in terms of resources,” she said, noting that there are automatically new challenges when trying to move what would normally be face-to face interactions into an online setting.“We’re trying to be realistic and make sure that no matter what happens we’re still able to provide our students with the with the support and the resources and the encouragement they might need whether they’re going to end up being here physically part time or whether it’s going to be remote.” Part of the effort on that front is being led by Sheila Quinn, who has stepped back onto the Student Services team in a role similar to but also very different from one that she occupied from 2013 to 2015.“I am so happy to be back,” Quinn said, explaining that while her job as Recreational Activities Technician is still all about helping youth develop leadership skills, build community, and create a network of ongoing support throughout the school year, that looks very different in the context of COVID-19.Both Quinn and Beattie described the main goal at the moment as being recruitment and training for the Cougar Ambassador program, through which older students are recruited and trained as peer mentors and leaders.“I know that she has that ability to engage students whether in person or through an electronic format,” The campus director said, sharing that she was very enthusiastic when approached by Quinn about the possibility.“She was just phenomenal at that job and has a lovely rapport with college age students.” Asked about how one trains students to lead their peers when everyone is stuck at home, Quinn said that she is introducing the idea that the students are an archipelago: a cluster or collection of islands.“The Cougar Ambassador team this year will begin as a cluster of islands - each one of us lives on one, me included,” she said, pointing to the job of the future ambassadors as working to try to keep each other a?oat while in relative isolation. So far, Quinn said, a dozen different students have joined the program, with room for more until the end of the week.In terms of concrete planning, the incoming cohort will be subdivided into teams led by an ambassador whose job it will be to check in regularly and make sure things are doing alright.Much of that checking in and training is likely to take place online, although there are a lot of uncertainties still at this point.“Because we don’t know if we can be in person or not, it seems really wise to develop the program from a remote platform,” Beattie said, underlining the fact that the ambassadors offer, “a friendly guiding hand,” in a stressful and uncertain time, whether they are present in person or not.“Anything that we can do in person we will just view as a tremendous bonus.” “What we are doing is building community, and that can happen in any conditions,” Quinn added.“Just because life throws a giant curve ball doesn’t mean we can’t thrive - plants grow in cracks in the sidewalk, after all.” Re?ecting on the processes underway, Beattie acknowledged that everyone, from the students, to the teachers, to the student services team, would much prefer to be able to all be present in person in the fall. She emphasized, however, that there are a large number of challenges and new realities that have to be faced governing everything from the way that course content can be taught at a distance to the conditions under which people are allowed to live in residences.Champlain Lennoxville will be hosting its virtual orientation for incoming ?rst years at the end of the month of June, and the Campus Director said that by that point there should be a clearer sense of what the fall semester will look like.“It’s pretty darn complex,” Beattie said, expressing great appreciation for the patience and determination of all those working to try to ?nd solutions behind the scenes.COURTESY Sheila Quinn has stepped back onto the Student Services team in a role similar to but also very different from one that she occupied from 2013 to 2015.First Sherbrooke bus with protective partition Gradual return to front door boarding Record Staff Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS) users can once again board city Page 4 Friday, June 5, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Stamina By Revs Mead Baldwin, Rabbi Boris Dolin Lee Ann Hogle, and Rev.Carole Martignacco 1) How long do we have to hold on to a world that is so broken? This pandemic has already tested our strength and our stamina, asking us to wake up each day to new challenges and problems, when all we want is for things to be back to some semblance of normalcy. And now with the events of the past few weeks, we have a world ?lled with protests and tough realizations about racism and violence that are shocking us to the core.It is hard to keep going, when as many have said, our world is simply not ok.But we have to hold on.We have to not only live each day with intention and hope, but now we also have to continue to ?ght for more.We should not be allowed to be comfortable when we encounter so much pain in front of us.As we are told in the Talmud: “When the community is immersed in suffering, a person may not say: I will go to my home and I will eat and drink, and peace be upon you, my soul.” (Talmud Taanit 11a) Here’s what we know.Unlike even a few months ago, when the protests of the past few days quiet down, we will not be back to normal. We will still be in a pandemic, and we will still be in a very broken world. And we know we still have a lot of work to do.2) The word ‘stamina’ immediately reminded me of a story about Jesus. He was going through a dif- ?cult personal struggle and he didn’t want to be alone.(I think we can all relate to that experience.) So he decided to go to a private place one night to re?ect and pray.He asked his closest followers to stay up with him.Their stamina was in short supply and they soon fell asleep. After a time of prayer Jesus went to see them and woke them.Once more he invited them to remain awake with him.Of course, they fell asleep again, more than once. When I read that story I identify with the disciples.I too have a relatively short attention span.I’m not sure I would have any more stamina than they did.We live in dif?cult days I fear, and stamina is in short supply.People are in a rush to get back to normal life, even though the threat of COVID 19 is still rising. It has only been a few months and people break the rules and defend their individual rights. Some churches south of the border have broken the law, even at the cost of human life as parishioners get sick.Contrast this with the stamina of Canadians in the two major wars of the past century. They survived years of rations and harsh conditions.People bonded, shared resources, survived, and created a better world.I believe the enemy of stamina is sel?shness. So many people care more for their own freedom and desires, than for the greater good. Many privileged people feel they have earned the right to break the rules, that restrictions don’t apply to them.We as a society have been asked to have the stamina to wait patiently for a while.Perhaps if we thought it was Jesus making the request, asking us to wait alertly just a bit longer, it might make all the difference.3) When I think about her I realize my mother had a lot of stamina. What I mean is that she could always be counted upon even when times got tough. She persevered. She exhibited the proverbial stiff upper lip.She lived through the Depression and World War II.For ?nancial reasons she became a full-time working mother when the mothers of most of my friends stayed home. She accepted my father’s bouts of depression with stoicism and still found ways to laugh and enjoy life.In all my growing up years she was my rock and continued to be so as I passed through the dark valleys of my own adult life. She faced the problems of the day, but did not seem to fret too much about the “what if ”s and the “if only ”s.Perhaps it was the secret of her enduring strength.Jesus seems to have had the same philosophy. He said, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Mt 6:34) 4) “How are you holding up?” We ask each other.“Is it over yet?” “Enough already, it’s getting old!” “Take care.Hang in there!” Having no end in sight takes its toll. Our courage, patience and stamina are challenged in so many directions.Weeks ago my thoughts centered on staying the coro- navirus course.Maintaining the energy required for daily sacri?ces and the commitment to not give up too soon on stay-at-home protocols designed to protect self and others, however inconvenient they are personally, however we long for a return to “business as usual.” Then May 25 happened and everything shifted gears with that brutal 9-minute video viewed all over the world - testing our stamina for witnessing unspeakably blatant cruelty and hate.Protests spread from my hometown Minneapolis to major cities across the US and Canada to around the world and they continue still.Thank goodness - imagine a world that could stand by and watch without outrage.Yet keeping up with the rapidly unfolding news requires a stamina I thought I’d already nearly exhausted with the ever-changing health crisis and the racial inequalities it has exposed. What we need now is a kind of spiritual ?tness training, because the work ahead requires us to stay the course.Overturning injustices, addressing - or even understanding - the long, sad, cruel history of race relations and white privilege similar to the truth and reconciliation ongoing here in Canada with the indigenous peoples. We need stamina to get through the shared shock, grief and generational pain.We need stamina to keep listening to each other with open hearts and minds. We need stamina as we confront white privilege, how we any of us, regardless of best intentions, are implicated in the suffering of those who are disenfranchised in our societies.Understanding that for those who are exploited and oppressed for generations - this is long past getting old! Neither the Covid virus nor the old pandemic of hate pandemics will be over soon.We need all the spiritual stamina we can muster now.None of us is a bystander; it will take all of us together to bend that arc of the universe toward justice.Take care and hang in there ~ clearly we’re in this for the long haul! One word, four voices - as usual now we turn it over to you: What are you doing to stay ?t, soul-wise, how do you maintain your stamina in these times of great challenges?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Eustace Bruce Allanson Michele Murray Jackie Belleau Marjorie Laurie John Serjeantson Megan Seline Anonymous Alberta Everett James Buckland Heather Stewart Robert Judge Beverly Taber Church closures in Johnville and Coaticook Record Staff The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sherbrooke announced on Thursday that it will be permanently closing the Notre-Dame- de-la-Paix church in Johnville. This follows the news last week that the Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste church in Coaticook would also close its doors. In both cases the reasons provided were ?nancial.According to the statement issued by the archdiocese, the Johnville church had an annual operating cost of approximately $25,000, but less than $10,000 left to spend. In Coaticook, although the $32,000 left in the bank would just cover the costs of the coming year, a decreased capacity to draw new funds and ?ll important roles on church committees led to the decision to close. Both also said that the decision was sped up by the coming of the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited the ability of church communities to gather and work together.“Although the health crisis precipitated the closure of the church, the ?nancial situation has been precarious for several years already, said Sonia Turgeon, parish animator in the Coaticook area.“In addition, without a committed succession ready to get involved, it becomes dif?cult for us to maintain activities. The decision is emotional, but we must be realistic.” In Johnville, Deacon Gérard Leblanc said that the sale of the church building will not mean the end of the worship community.“It is a very dynamic community, known for its welcome,” he said, explaining that worship services will be held in other parts of the municipality. The personnel of the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke is accompanying both of these communities through this period of change and transition. My Take: By Gordon Lambie Here’s a crazy idea: When hundreds of thousands of people stand up and say that there is a problem - believe them. There are many situations where healthy skepticism is an important tool for examining the world, but millions of people of colour across the world are not having a mass delusion about the existence of racism or the terrible impact it has on their lives.Pretending that systemic discrimination doesn’t exist will only make things worse, as will holding on to the idea that it is somebody else’s problem.I’m not going to sit here and claim that there is an uncomplicated solution, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that gaslighting protestors or making jokes about running them over with your truck is not going to make anything better.Pushing this down further is only going to make it explode. My Take: By Matthew McCully Yesterday’s Record included an article about the upcoming anti- racism march scheduled for Sunday morning in Sherbrooke. The comments on the paper’s Facebook page took a turn the likes of which I’ve never seen before.Playing host to that broad a range of opinions and emotions proved a heavy burden. When the march begins, I imagine that full range will again ?ll the hearts and minds of the participants and those watching. Before your next step, remember this: Even in a storm every drop of rain is accounted for. Each one lands somewhere and serves a purpose. It could be absorbed into the ground to nourish a seed, or that one drop could bear the weight that ?nally breaks through a limestone wall. The same goes for voices in a crowd. So let’s be conscious of where those voices could travel and what they could do.My Take: By Michael Boriero No one should fear the people we consider our protectors. After watching the video of George Floyd’s murder, and witnessing the painful aftermath, I realized that we all have a role to play in healing the wounds of systemic racism.I want to be perfectly clear: I’m a white, 20-something-year-old male living in Canada.I have not experienced the injustice or oppression felt by our black communities.I don’t need to worry about what might happen to me when I walk outside.I am not being unlawfully targeted by police because of the colour of my skin. While too many have come before him, the senseless murder of George Floyd has sparked an urgent cry for change. Our society needs to be better. We must listen to the voices that have been suppressed for far too long.If not now, then when?CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 reopened throughout all of the regions in Quebec. This includes outdoor public or undefended border. In the War of 1812 we fought the US with the United Kingdom, in a con?ict about trade and territory. The subsequent rati?cation in 1815, of the Treaty of Ghent, allowed Canada to patriotically maintain its borders and the US to be rid of English interference. In the ensuing 200 years the US has become our biggest ally and largest trading partner. We share military and defence alliances in NATO and NORAD.We have fought side by side in war and in keeping the peace. We are greatly in?uenced by American culture and affected by its politics. We sometimes feel inferior in power and superior in ethics.Every day about 2 billion dollars worth of goods and 400,000 people cross the border. So why if we don’t need a defended border, “do fences make good neighbours”?Mending Wall, is a poem by former US Poet Laureate, Robert Frost. He describes a stone wall between 2 farmers who are friendly neighbours, where each must do their share to keep the wall in good repair. They both know that fences make good neighbours by de?ning their respective space and keeping differences from creating con- ?ict, even among friends.During COVID-19 our differences and our need for common purpose, have come into sharp focus. There are political, trade, social, and health care issues where we intersect and often, but not always, take the same road. How do we build on our relationship, but maintain and mend our fences? We share a similar vision of democracy with the US, although one is currently the right and the other the left side of a centre fence. We have differing philosophies about immigration, the environment and social policy.Canada is a critical supplier of 13 of the 35 minerals that the US has iden- ti?ed as critical to economic and national security. We have key integrated supply chains for the car industry, energy, food and aerospace. We are a key source of battery technology for electric cars. Our health care systems are different in scope and payers, but similar in medical strategy.COVID-19 has, in many ways brought us together, but also magni?ed our differences. We share the same strain of virus. We will learn from each other as we sometimes take diverging paths for containment and its effects on a second wave. Our research into effective treatments are collaborative. There are a large number of multicentre, bilateral research projects underway and we proudly lead a number of them. Our federal government is spending $1.1 billion for a national medical and research strategy to address COVID-19.The US has committed huge amounts to be used to understand, treat and ?nd a cure. These are both good decisions that should transcend politics.Collaboration during adversity will bring us closer together as we ?ght a common enemy. We need to strengthen the bonds that unite us in that common purpose. How can we do it wisely?1.Develop integrated PPE and ventilator supply chains, independent of China.2.Return manufacturing to North America with cross border integration as with the car industry as a model.3.FDA and Health Canada collaboration to share information and speed up regulatory approval.4.Joint Biomedical research and clinical trials about therapeutic interventions.5.Vaccine development and sharing of production.6.Enhanced security to limit foreign government hacking of key biomedical discovery.China and Russia are the main culprits.7.Joint manufacturing of key drugs now in short supply and stockpiling for future use.8.Common, safe, 5G platforms that advance technology, such as sharing of enhanced virtual health care platforms.9.Common stance on WHO investigation as to current and future guidance.10.Joint decisions on open borders and travel precautions. We can disagree but still collaborate and maintain our nationalistic, political and social identity, regardless of who the US president is this year and next.We sometimes have a love, hate relationship with our big brother to the south. There is much to admire and sadly much to rue. What is certain is that we need each other more than ever.Fences make good neighbours. We need to mend the wall together.Don’t throw the stones in the wall that may divide us, use them to build bridges of trust, collaboration and invention. Some Canadian values might just rub off.Eh!!! particularly many of our CONT’D ON PAGE 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, June 5, 2020 Page 7 A dire plea CONT’D FROM PAGE 6 English-speaking seniors who of course are among the demographic that tragically has been devastated by the virus.A review of your Health Ministry ?les regarding Sherbrooke’s Grace Village will reveal a history of exemplary, professional, compassionate and loving care to the thousands of residents cared for by this organization.Faced with impending deadlines to meet much needed changes to the Quebec Fire Safety Regulations and Building Code, our community rallied together, French-speaking and En- glish-speaking friends and neighbours alike, to explore and eventually implement the solution; a state of the art, modern, Grace Village Care Pavilion that Mme Marguerite Blais described publicly as her dream.I volunteered to lead the community effort made up of many volunteers of various professions and life experiences and in the spring of 2015 I left my long cherished career as a Non Commissioned Of?cer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to take on a completely new and foreign role as Executive Director of Grace Village ; a private, charitable not-for-pro?t senior care organization that has been serving primarily, but not exclusively, the Eastern Townships English-speaking minority community for 62 years. It was easy for me and many more over the decades to commit ourselves to a cause so worthy; the care of our precious elderly who themselves have made so many sacri- ?ces for the generations that followed. As part of our efforts to research the ideal design for the new Grace Village Care Pavilion, I travelled to Woodstock, New Brunswick along with our longstanding Director of Care, Mrs.Sandra Klinck who is also a teacher at our Local CEGEP and Vocational Training Centre for learning and certi?cation programs for Certi?ed Care Givers, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Registered Nurses. Also part of that delegation was Mr.John Klinck, Honorary President of the Grace Village Care Foundation, husband of Sandra and son of Grace Village’s founder, the widely respected and much loved, Dr.W.J.Klinck.Leading our expedition was a volunteer that I recruited to oversee our building design and construction, Mr.Paul McLean, a native of Woodstock and now a highly respected Sherbrooke area businessperson and community leader. The Carleton Manor in Woodstock became the basis for the Grace Village design. The Executive Director at that time, Ms.Kay Simonds not only willingly gave Mr.McLean their architectural plans but she also informed us of de?- ciencies and design features that they had regretted not incorporating in the original build.Equipped with this information, Mr.McLean further consulted Mrs.Klinck who had researched senior care facilities at the national and international level and is an expert in infection control and from my own experience as a novice, a stern enforcer of best practice infection prevention rules that have been part of the Grace Village legacy from the beginning.Mr.McLean also took care to incorporate the input from frontline staff and even implemented changes to the ?rst draft of the building design after receiving constructive criticism. We even took food services staff to another much more modern home in order to encourage them to choose what they thought would be the best equipment for the new Grace Village Care Foundation’s modern kitchen.Energy ef?cient and environmentally friendly systems were implemented and the ?nal one storey Grace Village Care Pavilion was realized and included 120 private rooms with fully equipped private bathrooms, divided into four isolated 30-room autonomous neighbourhoods, many attractive amenities including two exterior, secure garden courtyards. The new Pavilion was in compliance with our own imposed criteria that exceed government requirements: Optimal Fire Safety and Evacuation, Optimal Infection Control, an inviting homey environment, and an attractive facility to encourage community groups to meet in Grace Village’s Richard Faith Hall.Without government help, no willing ?nancial institution to lend us the requisite funds, and a project underway without all the needed charitable donations collected; Mr.Richard Faith, a former Eastern Townshipper, loaned us the money without constraints or encumbrances so that we could continue and complete construction.Mr.Mclean’s reputation for bringing in projects on or under budget all the while maintaining high quality standards of construction came to fruition. To most of us, $15 million seems like a huge sum but when compared with our model home Carleton Manor’s recent 30-room extension that cost in the vicinity of $8 million, rest assured, our donor community got the maximum impact and value for their generous donations ranging from $20 to millions of dollars charitably given by Grace Village Staff, volunteers, local citizens, businesses and donors and foundations from abroad.Mr.Legault, I am explaining all this to you because I am hoping, that if not already briefed about Grace Village and other similar community based private and often non for pro?t organizations around Quebec, you will come to understand, appreciate and respect the monumental community involvement that founded these organizations many years ago, provided essential care to thousands of seniors and when government imposed changes without much needed government funds to support those changes, we, the people of your beloved Quebec and more closely to my home, the Eastern Townships, rose to meet the challenge and raised the needed charitable funds, met government regulations and saved our senior homes and long standing best practice care models. In so doing we deserve your personal attention to the crisis which with the best of intentions you may have inadvertently caused and that will bring Grace Village and other private seniors residences to our knees, closing our doors for good, and launching our residents into what is understandably currently a terrifying destination; government operated CHSLDs.Grace Village and other private homes have done everything possible to keep up with competing government front line care staff wages.Grace Village’s last increase which resulted in newly employed Certi?ed Care Givers who have paid for their own training, receiving a starting wage of $17 per hour. That raise along with other raises for frontline staff caused Grace Village to suffer an approximate $500,000 de?cit in ?scal year 2019.This de?cit was paid for by a volunteer and generous donor.Your announcement earlier this week of $21 per hour for accepted applicants to undertake the required three-month training program for Certi?ed Care Givers and a subsequent starting wage of $26 per hour will not be able to be matched by Grace Village or any other private seniors’ care residence.Last year the Grace Village Care Foundation, in respect of and in keeping with Dr.Klinck’s long standing legacy of providing charitable care for those who were impoverished; raised nearly $250, 000 through charitable donations to support Grace Village residents who cannot afford the cost of their care. The gap between $17 per hour and your soon to be implemented $26 dollar an hour wage cannot be addressed through charitable donations.Grace Village and others like us will therefore soon collapse due to an imposed impossible and insurmountable obstacle.Last evening, at just after 5 p.m.I was interviewed by Allison Brunette of the CBC Radio’s Breakaway Show where I shared much of what I have described to you above. When Ms.Brunette asked me for my opinion with respect to what the best solution would be, I responded by stating that Mr.Legault needs to look to our neighbour to the east.New Brunswick has an excellent best practice model of government/private senior care partnerships that although not perfect, would be the ideal solution for our current and soon to be disastrous predicament in Quebec. As an example, the non-pro?t, community supported Carleton Manor, our model home in Woodstock New Brunswick, bene?ts from a partnership with the NB government in the following ways.Annually they receive a government allocated budget that covers the entire salary base for all employees according to government regulated staff ratios; their allocation includes funds for budgeted repairs and maintenance for that ?scal year as well as a contingency contribution to an accumulating account for anticipated long term maintenance and repair; their annual budget also includes the requisite funds to pay their monthly, government guaranteed mortgage payment to an obviously more than willing ?nancial lending institution; and the cherry on the Sunday as they say is that the government will provide emergency funding for unanticipated emergency repairs or equipment breakdowns. The budget covers every expense beyond the funds generated through the maximum monthly resident care rate of $2,450.Mr.Legault as a business man who I believe is sincerely and truly compassionate and fair in your approach; please understand that Grace Village residents who are now disabled and or chronically ill and who require the highest level of nursing care to the end of life, are required to pay $4,800 per month of which approximately $726 is credited back to them by Revenue Quebec’s tax credit system for seniors in care over 70 years old.The estimated cost for the same level of care in Quebec Government taxpayer funded CHSLDs is over $9,000 per month.New Brunswick, with a much lower tax base, recognized years ago that it is cost effective to partner with community based private senior care organizations. In that Mr.Legault lies your solution to what now has become an unintended crisis to your recent wage increases for Certi?ed Caregivers. We all understand and support the need to raise the wages of our much deserving front line care staff.Simply put, we in the private sector cannot achieve the same result without your help.I respectfully request that you or members of your team reach out to our designated team to quickly discuss how we can avert what will be another new crisis that you and your team will have to respond to.Our volunteers who are not only advocating for Grace Village but by extension all private seniors’ homes across Quebec, are waiting for your call: they are the Honorable David Price, the Honorable Sam Elkas, Mr.Jim Crook and Mr.Patrick Slama.Thank you for your consideration of my letter. Please do not let us down.RESPECTFULLY YOURS GREG BISHOP I respectfully request that you or members of your team reach out to our designated team to quickly discuss how we can avert what will be another new crisis that you and your team will have to respond to.Grace Village and other private homes have done everything possible to keep up with competing government front line care staff wages. It was easy for me and many more over the decades to commit ourselves to a cause so worthy; Columbia.Besides being a renowned sports medicine doctor, he has been an elite marathoner, having run 30 marathons in under two hours, 30 minutes. He was Chief Medical Of?cer at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. He is co-founder of the world’s third-largest 10km, the Vancouver Sun Run.He founded the Vancouver Marathon in 1972…it was organized by the Lions Gate Road Runners Run Club, which he also co-founded.Dr.Taunton obviously has a unique perspective on runners’ health and ?tness issues and he has some advice for runners who may be recovering from the novel corona virus and contemplating an early return: “Don’t rush back into running.” Getting proper exercise is essential to improving our immune system and our mental well being. While working out can be addictive in a good way, it can present a challenge to use your common sense and stop running when dealing with illness or injury. If you have recovered from COVID-19, getting back into a regular exercise program should be done cautiously and incrementally under a doctor’s care.In a recent interview, Dr.Taunton shares his expertise on how to return to running safely following recovery from the novel corona virus.“The big concerns for returning to exercise are central motor neurons, so much like concussion or individuals with Parkinson’s,” he said.Other concerns include, “Memory changes, poor balance, changes in gait, and coordination, so exercises addressing these areas are important.” Dr.Taunton adds, “Also, pulmonary changes like asthma or pneumonia (can result), so must start walking at 20-30 minutes slowly then faster walking and increase to 40 minutes, and if not shortness of breath or wheezing, then add a walk/run for 30 minutes.Fast walk for four minutes, jog for one minute, and repeat six times for 30 minutes. Then fast walk for three minutes and jog for two minutes for the 30 minutes and progress to jog 30 minutes and slowly increase to 40 minutes, then add intervals.” The other concern he addresses is your heart, which he says, “…could have developed an in?ammation called, Myocarditis (in?ammation of the heart muscle) with arrthymias (problem with the rhythm of the heartbeat).Dr.Taunton adds, “If you had this, you need to see a cardiologist for an exercise stress test and echo cardiogram… this will determine your safe cardiac limits.” Dr.Taunton advises to walk ?rst then walk/run, as in most recoveries. He believes in starting slowly, on alternate days.Moving your body is the step in the right direction to feeling a sense of accomplishment.According to a recent New York Times article, Returning to Exercise after Recovery from corona virus, Dr.Jonathan Kim, a sports cardiologist at Emory University in Atlanta, says, “For most athletes who have spent weeks at home recovering from the virus, the ?rst few workouts could feel lousy, he says, since any lingering viral effects may combine with general physical de-conditioning.So, expect some discomfort. But if you experience considerable or increasing chest tightness or new heart palpitations, stop exercising, contact your doctor and discuss whether you should complete cardiac testing.” Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture June 5 - June 11, 2020 TALK Richard Martel on keeping a steady beat If you were a regular at the Country Music Appreciation Jam, you certainly got to hear and meet local drummer Richard Martel. Most of his friends call him Meg but the reason for that nickname is still unclear to me.Martel was born in Richmond, Quebec. He has six siblings; two brothers and four sisters and nobody in his family plays any instrument. He said that he heard of an uncle who played the organ but never really knew him.Like most little boys Martel was very engaged in sports (mainly hockey), but slowly music would ?nd its way into his heart even if being a musician was not at always part of his plan.“The music of The Beatles is what drew my attention to music, melodies and sounds. My older brother was a Beatles fan and bought all their records. With that music playing in the house all the time it ?nally got me interested,” he said in an interview. As a teenager, Martel was particularly drawn to the beat and slowly found himself following different rhythms.“I remember using my mother’s knitting needles to hit the bottom of a tin can of Fiesta chips (the best chips at that time) and I found an old bongo to add to it and I started learning different beats from the Beatles music. It all came to me very easily as if I had no effort to make to follow,” Martel said of his ?rst experience with keeping the beat and following a song.He bought his ?rst set of drums from the drummer of a very popular Richmond group in the sixties, The Thunderbirds. The group was dismantled in 1967 and the young man’s mind was set on becoming a drummer and one day having his own band. For a while, he worked very hard at honing his skills and at the end of 1968 he decided it was time to move forward and make things happen.“I started my ?rst group around 1968 with guys who, like me, loved the rock music of the era.We were young and it was the music we liked. But with the evolution of music, we wanted to play something more complicated, heavier sounding so we found new musicians who were able to play the music of Cream, Hendrix, CCR, Led Zeppelin,” he recalled. The new group was very successful.Their music was up-to-date, they were all well-known local musicians and with their friends and families, they drew huge crowds everywhere they played. This lasted for a few years but like many other bands, everyone end- ed-up going in a different direction.“After that, I played with another band.We did weddings, parties, bars with a very commercial and pop repertoire. It didn’t last very long and I was a while without playing at all,” he said. But if you know a drummer personally, you have surely noticed that to them, everything can be used as a drum whether it is a table, a counter top, a bottle, their thighs. They have to keep the beat. They have a visceral need to be in rhythm with their environments. So they technically never stop playing.“In 1981 I decided to join a popular local band.Again we did bars, parties, weddings and special dances. The name of the band was Les Paralèles (a strange name) and after the guitar player left we had to ?nd a new one. This is when Marc Gosselin joined the band as lead guitar and singer.Gosselin was a good-looking, tall and lanky cowboy and was a crowd pleaser,” Martel explained.“I remember the girls standing up and screaming the minute he set foot on the stage. This brought some very comical and special moments in our weekend gigs.Gosselin was a real star and people thought he was American. These were wonderful years of good music and fun,” Martel said. One day, he decided he had enough of playing every weekend after working hard all week.He was tired and decided to quit the band and moved to Ste-Claude right in the country, to be able to have his own garden, raise some horses, get closer to nature and ?nally start his family. He lived there and raised his two kids, a boy and a girl, until they were gone from the house to pursue their studies in 2005.That is when he decided to come back to Sherbrooke. After years on the farm the couple wanted to be closer to everything. Both of them love sports such as skiing, cycling and he loves gol?ng, so it was more practical to live in town.“We moved to Sherbrooke and right away I had a phone call from a musician who wanted me to play with a bunch of friends.I had always kept my drums, but I was wondering if I would still be in shape to perform,” explained Martel.“I decided to give it a try and found out that my physical condition was still very good, so I started rehearsing with them.I was able to get all the ?exibility and dexterity in my wrists back.Music has evolved, beats are a little different but I managed to adapt very well.Steadiness is important for a drummer so it means many hours of practice to get back to that precision,” he said, of his return to drumming.Even during the phases when he was not playing music, Martel never stopped being an avid music lover and a fervent consumer of albums, always trying to discover new sounds and new artists.Sharing his ?ndings with friends and comparing points of view was always important to him.His enthusiasm for music has always been infectious and his taste very eclectic. He keeps an open mind no matter what he is listening to.And he found a way to compare drumming to sports.“A drummer in a band is a little bit like a goalie in hockey. The musicians (guitar, keyboard, bass, singer) create the core and melody of the music together while the drummer is apart providing the rhythm, punctuating the changes in the beat and the solos, supporting the other musicians while always making sure to keep control of the ensemble,” stressed Martel. Now part of the group Labandalou, which specializes in retro music, Martel also plays once in a while with a group based in Coaticook.According to him, musicians today play a lot more for the pleasure than for the money which barely covers their fees. For quite a few years now, the drummer has added country music by choice to his repertoire.“Since the very beginning, I have followed the evolution of music, mainly the British Invasion, until one day a dear friend of mine insisted that I listen to the Pancho and Lefty album featuring Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.I was amazed to hear the arrangements.Country music is constantly evolving and I can now say that Merle Haggard remains my favorite country artist for the way he can tell a story.” Roll out your dough to 3/8” to 1/2” thickness, brush the grill with oil (garlic steeped oil is a good option). When the bottom of the crust is lightly browned, turn it over.Brush the top with oil, add tomato sauce, toppings and cheese.Close the barbecue lid and continue to cook until the cheese is melted.I personally don’t like this method as some of the ingredients tend to fall through the grill and gets a bit messy. For the next two methods, you will prepare the pizza in advance and transfer it to a hot pizza stone.I suggest rolling and dressing your pizza on parchment paper prior to transferring it to the pizza stone.I am a big fan of parchment paper, so I always cook my pizza with a piece between the dough and the stone. You may wish to leave your pan under the pizza or remove it, cooking directly on the stone or on the parchment paper.Personally, I ?nd that using the parchment paper keeps the pizza stone cleaner than when dripping sauce and melted cheese in?ltrating the pores of the stone.Be sure to trim the paper smaller than the stone so that the edges don’t catch on ?re.Second Method: Pizza stone directly on the grill. The danger here is that the pizza stone my break due to the direct heat.I like to put a piece of aluminium foil as a heat de?ector.Third Method: Elevate the pizza stones.I like this method best as it has several advantages.Use two or three clay bricks, with the holes, to distance the pizza stone from the grill. This favours good air ?ow and positions the pizza stone closer to the middle of the barbecues cover.Since heat rises, it is hotter there than directly on the grill itself.Keep a eye on the time and make sure that your under-crust does not burn and you will agree that this is one of the best ways to bake pizza.Don’t make the same mistakes I’ve made.First Mistake: Never, ever wash your pizza stone with soap or submerge it in water. The pores will absorb the soap and impart an undesirable taste to your next pizza. Those same pores will absorb the water like a sponge and may cause your pizza stone to “explode” or shatter as the water heats up inside the stone.Second Mistake: I thought it would be a good idea to put two pizza stones on my grill, however, my barbecue would not accommodate two 15” stones so I decided to trim them so that the 2 would ?t side by side.I used my water tile cutter… refer to my ?rst mistake. The ?rst pizzas I made, the bottoms burned to a crisp within two minutes and I had to quickly turn on the oven to ?nish that meal.I don’t know about you, but I don’t really enjoy the taste of charred crust. Also, with two stones, there was no longer suf?cient air circulation which also contributed to burning the bottom of the crust.Whichever method you use, enjoy your pizza! I would love to hear your feedback and answer any pizza related questions. If you would like to try Brad’s Gourmet pizza dough mix, visit www.brads- gourmet.com Brad Laurie TALK TV Listings June 5 - June 11, 2020 Page 11 Your week on TV FRIDAY EVENING JUNE 5, 2020 Bell Star 6 PM 6:30 7 PM 7:30 8 PM 8:30 9 PM 9:30 10 PM 10:30 11 PM 11:30 12 AM WCAX # - - (:01) Channel 3 News at Six Class of 2020 Graduation CBS Evening News Entertainment Tonight (N) MacGyver MacGyver tackles a locked-door mystery.Å Magnum P.I.Mercenaries storm the estate.’ Å Blue Bloods Erin receives an unsolved robbery case.’ Channel 3 News (:35) The Late Show With Stephen Colbert ’ Å WPTZ % - - NBC5 News at 6 (N) NBC Nightly News - Holt Jeopardy! raised in the Eastern Townships. He attended Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, and did his undergraduate studies in Lennoxville, Quebec, at Bishop’s University, where he made life-long friends. In 1956 he completed an MBA at Harvard University and went into business, turning a small paper-converting company in Laval, Quebec, into a healthy business with a European arm.He sold the company in 1972 and took us all across the ocean to England for a year, where he studied at the London School of Economics and was mentored by Michael Oakeshott. On our return to Canada, he became a senior policy advisor to Quebec’s minister of industry and commerce for a year. After that he served as director-general of Pierre Trudeau’s infamous anti-in?ation board, and then as executive director of the equally newsworthy Task Force on Canadian Unity. In 1978, he went into elected politics, serving as the member of Quebec’s National Assembly for the riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grace from 1978-1987.He and a small group of Liberal MPs from Montreal ridings became close friends and allies as they defended the rights of English-speaking Quebeckers. He resigned his seat in 1987 to become Quebec’s delegate-general to London, and then served in the same role in New York City.Dad wrote two noteworthy books on Quebec politics: “A Different Vision: The English in Quebec in the 1990s,” and “Time to Say Goodbye: Building a Better Canada without Quebec.” He was deeply involved with Montreal’s English- speaking community, serving as chairman of Alliance Quebec and chairman and president of the Tyndale St-Georges Foundation. But he always kept a foot in Quebec’s majority culture. He was perfectly bilingual and did his best to ensure we were, too.Growing up, we listened to French music and watched French television at his insistence, and he served as chairman of La Compagnie de Danse Marie Chouinard in the 1990s.Dad is remembered by those who loved him as an elegant and witty man, an adventurer and a maverick, and an exemplar of the modern bicultural Montrealer. He struggled bravely in his ?nal years with advanced Parkinson’s disease, and never complained as it slowly closed its grip on him.Reed Scowen was the oldest son of Philip and Eulah Scowen. He is survived by his children, Amy, Peter, Sarah and Kate, and their mother, Mary Anne; and by his loving partner, Cynthia Ryan; his sister, Lee (Campione) and brother, Phil.He was a generous grandfather, and a beloved uncle and godfather. His children cannot adequately express their gratitude to the nurses and doctors of Mount Sinai Hospital, who looked after dad in his ?nal days and served with compassion as our proxies, as we were not allowed to visit him because of the pandemic. We will also be forever grateful to his primary caregiver, Jenny Bautista, who got him elegantly dressed for business every day, and to Hazelton Place for the excellent care it provided. There will be no funeral at this time; a graveside ceremony at Reedsville Cemetery in North Hatley will be organized when appropriate. In lieu of ?owers, please consider making a donation to the Tyndale St-Georges Foundation in Reed’s name.Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.Arrangements under the direction of the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W.Miles Understandably, declarer placed the heart king and ace with him.If so, he was unlikely to have the club king, because then he might have opened one heart. So, after ruf?ng, declarer played a diamond to dummy’s queen and ran the club queen.West won with his king and led back the diamond jack. Now South was sure that West could not have the club jack, because with 12 high-card points (heart ace-king, diamond jack and club king-jack) he certainly would have opened one heart, not two.Declarer ruffed on the board and played a club to his 10.Disaster - down one.
