stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too.But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid”.Donald J.Trump is, hands down, my least favorite person on the planet: I have great dif?culty listening to him, watching him on TV, or generally thinking about what a mess he has made since he took of?ce in January, 2017.I was not, originally, inclined to read Mary Lea Trump’s book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man when it was released a few months ago, but my sister, whose opinion I respect and whose feelings about Trump parallel my own, said it was worth a read. So, I took the plunge, and found out that there is at least one (and probably only one!) member of Donald Trump’s immediate family who has the chutzpah to show Donald, dressed in “the emperor’s new clothes”, for the naked tyrant he is.The thesis of this book is that la famiglia Trump, dating back to NY real estate tycoon Frederick Christ Trump (1905-1999) and his wife Mary Anne MacLeod (1912-2000), solidly paved the way for Donald (1946) to emerge as the person we all know and despise today. The in?uence of the Trump siblings Maryanne (1937), Fred Jr.[Freddy]) (1938- 1981), Elizabeth (1942) and youngest brother Robert (1948), should not be downplayed or ignored: to one degree or another, they were all complicit in the downfall of Fred Junior and the rise of Donald. The public is now privy to a number of books that blow the whistle on DJT and his antics, but this one purports to show why he behaves as he does, from the perspective of a family member who was an insider observer of the Trump trajectory. There are many lurid areas of speculation about the 45th president of the US which Mary Trump, now 55, could have researched and spoken about– such as the truth about Trump’s time at military school and university and his much-debated IQ– but wisely did not.It is a far more effective book as a result of sticking to the facts of which she is personally aware, or discovered via interviews with family, friends and business acquaintances.A trained psychotherapist, Mary Trump can, and does, write knowledgeably about Uncle Donald’s personality aberrations, and that is where the strength of the book lies.Does Mary Trump have an ax to grind?Yes, she does. She grew up watching her father, Fred Trump Jr., the favoured oldest son, wither and eventually die on the vine at the age of 42, a casualty of the family’s insistence that the Trump men must adhere closely to the footsteps of patriarch Fred Sr., a well-known real estate developer in the Queens borough of NYC.Although Trump Senior was clearly a success in business, like many successful business people, he held his family in little regard. There are a number of episodes recounting Fred’s indifference to his wife and children which clearly display what most occupied his time and attention: success in business, and moving on in the wide world of real estate.Unfortunately for Fred Jr, the real estate game, particularly in the positions that Fred Sr.thought appropriate for him, held little or no appeal. He strove to support his wife, Linda, and their children, Mary and Freddy, aka Fritz, on his own terms and within his own areas of interest and expertise. He obtained a pilot’s license despite his father’s objections, and brie?y made a living as a pilot before familial pressure rendered his dreams of independence moot.Once he fell from favour, there was no climbing out of the pit dug by his father, and he died at an early age from the effects of substance abuse.Meanwhile, Fred Sr.had turned his attention to grooming Donald for success in the business world.Fred Sr., with the help and cooperation of wealthy individuals and organizations, was able to amass a signi?cant fortune, but was stymied in his efforts to establish a foothold in Manhattan.A canny but less than personable entrepreneur, he knew where every penny went, and did not shy away from indulging in shady deals, as long as they proved lucrative. With the cultivation of brash loudmouth Donald as his successor, he hoped to enter the higher echelons of society. What he did not count on was Donald’s nearly total ineptitude with money and business. He lost or squandered millions of his father’s dollars in ill- conceived projects, and accumulated debt far beyond anything Fred Sr.anticipated.Still, he was able, through the power of his blustery (but oft-times charming) personality, move into ventures such as casinos and gambling in nearby Atlantic City, always using other peoples’ money.A lifelong bully and liar, Donald was building an image of himself completely at odds with reality, but powerful enough to convince banks to fund his enterprises. At least, until they realized that re-payment of their loans was not forthcoming. In the same way he hoodwinked his father and the money-men he approached, he ultimately put one over on a signi?cant segment of the American public in his run for the presidency.Even today, many do not acknowledge that he is all bluff, and no substance, principles (except that of greed) or intelligence to back him up.According to Wikipedia, Too Much and Never Enough sold nearly one million copies on the day of its release. That it was released at all is a feat unto itself, considering the clout of Donald Trump and his many concerted efforts to ban publication of such a powerful and revealing tome. This book is available at the Lennoxville Library.Trumped! festival is adopting a new look this year as organizers nixed the traditional parade model in lieu of a hybrid virtual and in-person event schedule.Fierté Sherbrooke Pride took over as lead organizer of the event last August and President Alexandre Rainville said he never expected his ?rst year at the helm to be so challenging. He had already planned the entire event before the COVID-19 outbreak reached Quebec.“We had to reinvent our programming,” said Rainville.“It caused a lot of problems for the organization because we had everything planned already.” He immediately cancelled the parade, which he acknowledged was a sad moment for the organization. It forced the group to look at different options, but the organizer said he believes they will still be able to deliver an interesting event for the LGBT community.Sherbrooke Pride decided to start with a virtual drag show on August 27, hosted by local drag queen Gina Gates.People can tune in online or watch the performance from L’Otre Zone, a bar located in Sherbrooke’s downtown area. The main event takes place a couple days later on August 29.People can enjoy a full slate of activities including poetry readings, musical performances and a live drag show at L’Otre Zone. The show will also be live streamed for people not in attendance.“We realized that putting everything online makes the event more accessible, especially to people who don’t want to be in noisy settings or people who can’t move around too much,” said Rainville. He said it was never a question of cancelling the event outright. They were willing to put everything online before the provincial government gave the go-ahead for bars to reopen.Last year, festivities drew roughly 500 people, according to Rainville. The organizer explained that the annual pride event is more than just a parade, it’s an important outlet for many people who struggle to ?nd support in their day-to-day lives. The LGBT community witnesses a lot of suicides, he said, because many members feel isolated from the world.“For a lot of people, it’s a really important time to show your pride,” Rainville explained.“It’s a time where we feel empowered, where we realize we aren’t alone in this life.” While the pandemic remains at the top of everyone’s minds, he said the energy level from within the organization has been high. There is a lot of positivity and support in the planning room.He also recognizes it won’t be this dif?cult every year.“It’s a lot of organization, a lot of things we’ve never done before, but we did a lot this year that we won’t be doing next year,” said Rainville.Fière la fête marches on with virtual activities Record Staff The City of Sherbrooke’s social and community development pilot project, launched on June 11 to help low-income individuals and families take advantage of public transit, is almost full.According to a press release issued by Sherbrooke’s community development corporation, the project currently serves 330 people with roughly 70 spots remaining open to the public.Known as the Solidarity program, the project allows people who sign up to obtain a 40 per cent discount on monthly urban and paratransit passes. The Corporation de développement communautaire (CDC) de Sherbrooke, Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS) and the city of Sherbrooke teamed up to bring the project to life.Residents can register online at www.solidaritetransport.ca.The project will run until March 31, 2021 and qualifying participants can buy their passes for $48.50 a month, rather than the normal $80.80 charge for a regular monthly pass.“With the con?nement experienced in recent months, we can see that people need to get out of their house. The project is popular, there’s even a short waiting list for regular users who wish to register,” said project coordinator Mélanie Houle. The CDC also emphasized that the bus is a safe space.Masks are mandatory and paying without contact reduces the risk of spreading COVID-19 so that sherbrooke residents can continue to take the bus to work or to their families.Public transit pilot project nearly full Record Staff After testing the water quality in parks around the city for the last week, the City of Sherbrooke has opted to shut down access to water fountains in over a dozen parks out of concern over signs of increased lead exposure.According to a press release issued by the city on Thursday, testing determined that 15 of the 89 water fountains involved in the study showed lead levels higher than the recommended amount outlined by Health Canada’s guideline, which is ?ve micrograms per litre. As a precautionary measure, Sherbrooke decided to interrupt the distribution of water in the water fountains and sinks in the parks in question. The Direction de santé publique du CIUSSS de l’Estrie - CHUS considers the health risk low, but worthy of intervention. The following is a list of parks losing access to water fountain, according to the city: Parc Bureau (building ?rst ?oor), Parc du Cœur-Immaculé- de-Marie, Parc Jean-Claude-Quirion, Parc Adrien- Cambron, Parc Quintal (baseball ?eld), Parc Gilles- Charland, Parc Jules-Richard, Parc Charland, Parc de Saint-Alphonse-de-Liguori, Parc Rodolphe- Vallée, Parc Arsène-Goyette, Parc Belvédère (baseball ?eld), Parc Olivier-Chauveau and Parc des Deux-Ruisseaux “We must examine the source of the lead in each case and make the necessary corrections,” said Jean-Pierre Fortier, head of the city’s Water Management and Construction Division.According to the CIUSSS, drinking water from one of the fountains with higher lead levels will not have a major impact on the level of lead in a person’s blood, but it could become a problem for young children and pregnant women. The city assured residents that there is no lead in the drinking water distribution system and said that they are taking action at the parks in question to further examine the equipment and connecting pipes.Lead concerns shut down Sherbrooke water fountains Page 4 Friday, August 14, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record I’m going viral on social media! I’m going viral on social media! I’m going viral on social media! Oh, wait. No, I’m actually not.But I sure would have loved to go viral! (Just to be clear, by ‘viral’ I’m referring to Facebook popularity, not to a literal virus infection, yes?) Anyway.Imagine posting something on Facebook, and within only a few hours, hundreds– no, thousands of likes and comments swarm your page! How nice and validating that must feel! Not that I would know, though. For every article I post on Facebook, I get about three likes, if I’m lucky, that is, and mostly from my mom, Uncle Ed, and Auntie Beth.(Though to be totally honest, I don’t think Auntie Beth even bothers with my Facebook posts.I think she’s never quite got the hang of how Facebook works, so it’s probably Uncle Ed who logs in twice: once through his own account and then from Auntie Beth’s – bless them both.) I’ve recently chatted with a fellow blog writer who claims to get over a thousand ‘likes’ for every article he shares from his blog to his Facebook page.I nearly choked on my own saliva when I heard that, and let me tell you that saliva induced by envy tastes particularly sour.I mean, over a thousand likes! Every time! This is insane! Clearly, the dude is a king when it comes to social media. Then he kindly asked me to reveal how many likes I usually get on MY Facebook posts. He wanted to compare.I swallowed.“Three,” I said timidly, lowering my gaze to the ?oor.“Three as in ‘three thousand’?” he cried out, “That’s triple what I have!” His shock was evident.“No, not three thousand,” I corrected, my voice almost a whisper, “Three.Only three.” I couldn’t bring myself to look into his face which, I could only imagine, was smug and triumphant now.I braced myself for some kind of a sneer. But instead, to my surprise, he admitted to having in?ated his ?gures slightly (by one thousand roughly). He’d just wanted to gauge my reaction, he said. What’s a little teasing between two old friends?Right.Well, at least I wouldn’t need to seek psychological therapy for inferiority complex, after all.Yay.Still, if there’s a magic formula to conquering social media, I would very much like to ?nd it.I’m not willing to give up on my dream of going viral and bathing in accolades! A-ha! I think I found it! With a little help from my fans (noticed how I called them ‘fans’, all three of them?), I might just be able to pull this one off.So, mom, Uncle Ed, and Auntie Beth, this message is aimed at you: If you happen to read this article on my Facebook page, please hit that thumbs- up button.I will pay you a dollar each when I see you on Friday for dinner, I promise! Didi Gorman Fire By Mead Baldwin Summer in Baldwin’s Mills was a great place in the sixties. There were lots of teenagers like me around, to play softball, Capture the ?ag, water ski, or just go swimming. There were 5 of us in our immediate family, and I had 12 ?rst cousins just on my Dad’s side. With 4 Patterson children, and two May cousins we were quite a crew An annual event was my Uncle Keith’s Corn boil, usually on Labour Day weekend, and it marked the end of the season. My cousins would soon return to the city, and we headed back to school. It was the ?nal ?ing before the return of everyday routine. At the corn boil we told stories, played horseshoes, hid in the bushes for kick the can, and roasted marshmallows. One year we even had a competition to see who could hold a headstand for the longest time.(I was the winner, as I recall). The adults drank wine and talked politics. That particular afternoon while we were ?nishing a softball game, and preparing for a swim to cool off, Uncle Keith drove up.Someone had seen smoke at Mud Pond.Fire had always been a community problem for us, and we were used to helping put out grass ?res and the like.Gary Patterson and I volunteered to check it out, so he drove us up Haskell Road and left us there while he went for reinforcements. We got out to hike through the woods to Mud Pond, a small body of water with no roads nearby, which had come by its name honestly. As I recall we had an old pail and a shovel between us.Gary knew the way better than me, so I followed his lead.Soon we could smell smoke. We started to run and quickly reached the shore. We saw the marks of a camp?re that some fool had made, and ?re burning in a number of places.Imagine building a camp?re on a bunch of pine needles, surrounding it with stones, and thinking it was safe.Filling the pail was a dif?cult task because of the thick mud in the pond.It felt a bit like I imagine quicksand would feel, and our shoes kept coming off till we just went barefoot.Just when we thought we had put out one blaze, another would erupt nearby, having traveled through the pine needles to a new place. The shovel helped, but it was too much for two teenage boys to manage. We were both glad when reinforcements showed up.Eventually someone from the Fish Hatchery arrived with a pump and some hose.Even so, we were there for hours. Finally, it was time to go home.A neighbour drove Gary and I and my cousin Nancy home, but we were covered in mud and soot.Uncle Keith still has his annual Cornboil.Horseshoes are a tradition.Last year we played frisbee football and bocce as well.A new generation of children are playing hide and seek.No one does headstands though.Still, I remember the year I never made it to the feast.Instead of roasting marshmallows at a camp?re we were ?ghting one for real.A strange footnote to the story.the neighbour who drove us home called my Mom the next day.He said we had made a dirty mess of his back seat and wanted us to come by to clean his car.Even my Mom was disgusted, and we never went.A community is not just games, parties and fun.It is also being there for each other, even ?ghting ?res together.Gary and I were proud of the part we played, but it was no big deal really.Everyone did their bit.Instead of a camp?re, we put out a real ?re and helped make a new bond for those of us from Baldwin’s Mills. What could have been a disaster ended up being just a fun memory, like the time we had to form a bucket brigade up the Pinnacle. But that’s a story for another day.COLUMNIST An annual event was my Uncle Keith’s Corn boil, usually on Labour Day weekend, and it marked the end of the season. Belvédère) is holding a public information meeting at the end of the month with the City of Sherbrooke to address merchants’ concerns about the Galt Street West reconstruction project. The meeting will be held on August 25 at 7 p.m.in the former Le Château boutique at the Centre Sherbrooke shopping centre on Belvedere Street. The shopping mall’s manager Vincent Bergeron said he was unsatis?ed with the city’s virtual consultation on June 10.Bergeron added that it was the Sherbrooke Mayor Steve Lussier who approached the centre about conducting a meeting with merchants in the area.He jumped at the opportunity to have a joint discussion with city of?cials. While the outspoken manager is in favour of the construction project, he worries about the negative impact it will have on business. He is alarmed by the partial closure of one of only two entrances to the shopping centre.“We are concerned about the effect of these changes on the shopping centre’s drawing power and traf?c levels,” he said adding that he has repeatedly asked for case studies and concrete evidence from the city that construction won’t have any effect on sales.According to Bergeron, merchants have reacted poorly to the project. They believe with one entrance, limited parking spaces, and congestion on Belvédère Street will deter residents from making the drive to the mall.Bergeron expects to hear answers from the city about their recent string of unilateral decisions – they decided to close down one of the entrances to the parking lot. This isn’t the time to fool around, he added, especially when it comes to mall traf?c levels.Sherbrooke is undertaking several beauti?cation projects, which is always a good thing, but the city can’t forget about local businesses that have been struggling throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, he concluded.By Gordon Lambie Yolande James, the Director of the Bishop’s forum, told The Record that she is feeling relief and excitement for the future following the conclusion of this week’s online event.“I was beyond what I’d hoped it could be,” she said, sharing that although the youth planning team was unfazed, she had been feeling uncertain about the changes involved in moving what is normally a large face-to-face gathering online.“Mind you I still am looking forward to when we can do it in person,” she added.“I’m not advocating for a virtual forum, but It really worked out well.” Concerned about whether or not participants would be able to achieve the same level of connection and engagement with the activities in a virtual space, James said she was struck by how well everything went.“We had over 50 participants and they stayed engaged throughout the four days,” the organizer said.James credited the participants for making their event a success, but also the coaches, guest speakers, youth advisory committee who all played their own important parts.“All of the panellists were very generous with their own experience and wanted to hear from the formers themselves,” James said.“It was an exchange.” Looking to the future, the forum director said that she thinks that this experience has involved lessons and tools that will be valuable for future in-person gatherings. In particular she shared that the event may have been able to reach more geographical regions of the province than previously because people were not limited by having to physically travel to the Bishop’s campus.“It will be interesting to see how we could potentially incorporate this aspect of it into a live forum.” In terms of being a forum aimed at fostering leadership skills in youth and young adults of Quebec’s English- speaking communities, James said that even the very modi?ed version this year was a big success.“These are not easy times for everybody,” she re?ected, “but when I think to the future of the English speaking community in Quebec, there are so many reasons to not only be optimistic, but also con?dent.” Sherbrooke shopping mall engages in consultation with abolishing English school boards until a ?nal ruling on whether that legislation respects the constitution. Our advice to Premier François Legault now is three-fold: Do not appeal the judgement, postpone the elections scheduled for Nov.1, and extend the terms of school commissioners correspondingly.Education Minister Jean-François Roberge may want to appeal the decision because he believes that Bill 40 protects the constitutional rights of Quebec’s English-speaking minority community. But this week’s court ruling says that there are important constitutional questions about the bill which have yet to be settled. To appeal this ruling would simply delay the ?nal decision on those fundamental questions and perpetuate confusion. The court also notes that to abolish English school boards now would cause irreparable harm.Even if the ?nal court ruling upheld the community’s right to its own boards, it would be dif?cult if not impossible to recreate them.In short, the court found that the request for suspension met the three standard criteria for granting such a stay: Is the matter serious? Will the proposed change cause irreparable harm? And what is the balance of inconvenience between the parties (the English-speaking community and the government)? As for elections in November, whether for the existing school boards or for the service centres that the minister wishes to create, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it impossible for such elections to be a proper democratic exercise.Even before the pandemic, holding the elections this year would have been problematic.Dif?culties include outdated electoral lists, organizational challenges, securing voting locations and recruiting staff, just to name a few.Since the pandemic, the challenges have worsened. All our schools, indeed all of society, was shut down this spring.Students had to adapt to remote classrooms.Parents tried to keep their children safe and productive, while continuing to do their own work.Teachers ramped up online learning.Administrators are reimagining classrooms in the era of social distancing. No one has been in a position to do the necessary preparation for November elections. No one is revising the outdated electoral lists, last used in 2014, to determine who can vote.No one is mounting campaigns to run for election.A pandemic is not the best time for door-to-door campaigning! Mr.Roberge has already changed some of Bill 40’s timelines for the French service centres.Using the same logic, he should give the English sector the time needed to organize proper elections.Delaying the election by a year would have signi?cant bene?ts.The vote could then coincide with municipal elections as is done in the rest of the country – something which our community has been seeking for a number of years. It would also give the boards time to look at alternative voting methods such as mail-in and online voting. This would lower costs while increasing voter participation. We suggest that existing commissioners who already have experience and understand their constituents’ issues are far better placed to contribute to improved elections than new interim commissioners, presumably appointed by the government, could be.APPELE-Québec has tried to work with the government. We have met with the ministers of education and democratic institutions; we testi?ed before the National Assembly committee on Bill 40; we have written to the premier and the director general of elections. So far our efforts have been fruitless. We remain willing to sit down and work out a modus vivendi until the ?nal court ruling. That would be far more productive than an appeal which would prolong uncertainty or an inappropriate rush to elections.APPELE-Québec is a coalition of educators, community groups and citizens formed to defend English-language education rights.Geoffrey Kelley is its chair; Joan Fraser and Kevin Shaar are vice-chairs.My Take: By Gordon Lambie The tone of the conversation about education right now is very focused on the next three weeks to three months, and with good reason. There are far more uncertainties than anyone can feel comfortable with.As the parent of a child in the early years of elementary school, though, I can’t help but also think about how the 2020-2021 school year is going to rede?ne the rest of current students’ lives.Children grow up hearing adults around them talk about the watershed moments like ice storms, assassinations, or explosions; but those conversations take on a whole new meaning when they experience one of those moments for themselves. As much as it is vital to plan for the here and now, it will also be important to look carefully at the ripple effects of this moment in time as the children of this pandemic get older. My Take:By Matthew Sylvester A few months ago it felt like I had missed a real important memo.Every university’s website and application process felt like they were designed to make you as confused as possible. And if you ask for advice, you’ll get some people swearing that an ivy league is the only place to be for anyone who’s anyone, and other people telling you that any old university will be just as good as the famous ones. Then there are the super savvy who tell you that going to school is a waste of time, and that you really just ought to start building some connections in the business world. It seems like everyone knows all the right things to do, and nobody agrees with one another. The takeaway?Maybe they’re all right! Every path leads somewhere, you’ve just got to pick one and roll with it.My Take: By Michael Boriero The state of education in the province has become comical. We are living through unprecedented times. And obviously, we need a solution to reopen schools. But the way the government has gone about the whole process is both confusing and frankly, a little too late. We’re three weeks out from the fall semester and it feels like schools are more or less in the same position as they were three months ago. They axed the bubble proposal.Good.I’m not sure how that would have worked, especially in smaller classrooms. But it seems teachers will carry the brunt of this return-to-school project.Teachers will be stretched thin. It’s undeniable.Lesson planning, volunteering, correcting, and now, acting as pseudo-police for students breaking health and safety regulations. They’re also putting themselves at risk. The government is rolling the dice here. And teachers shouldn’t be the guinea pigs. partners who have supported us since the start of the pandemic,” said Nicolas Bélanger, CEO of the OSS.To make the capsules, musicians from the OSS gathered In small groups on stage for the ?rst time since activities ceased last March.Five capsules were produced in addition to a series of informative and entertaining capsules prepared by Stéphane Laforest, artistic director and conductor of the Orches- ter symphonique de Sherbrooke.“I wanted to explain to people how an orchestra works and the role of a conductor within it, in a relaxed and friendly manner,” Laforest explained.“These musical capsules are also heralds of a great artistic novelty that will emerge in the fall.We look forward to telling you more in the near future, ” he added, with a note of mystery. The videos will be unveiled gradually on the OSS website over the next few weeks, in order to spread the experience out.The OSS would like to thank the musicians of the Orchestra for their turf since 2018.Four of their planned competitions had to be either cancelled or postponed this year, with this week’s events being the only ones Athletisme Sherbrooke has time for before the end of the summer.“Saturday is already the 15th of August,” said Daniel Quirion, director of competitions for the club.“The Vert et Or football team will be taking up the track in just a couple of weeks.” The pandemic ended up having serious consequences on the schedules of athletics organizations all over the province.“We get our calendar from the Federation Quebecoise d’Athletisme in February.Since that was before the pandemic, all of our competitions were cancelled,” Quirion explained. The FQA is the of?cial body overseeing all competitions and athletic records in the province.Just last month, the federation reopened time slots for competitions under new strict sanitary guidelines.Attendees will even be warned if anyone who was their meet presents with COVID symptoms after the fact. The ?rst few months of the pandemic were devastating to the club’s athletes.During an interview with the Record earlier this summer, Athletisme Sherbrooke coach Yoseline Luenens explained the dif?culty keeping up training schedules with her athletes during the lockdown.“We weren’t there to adjust the training right away,” she said.Coaches had to make do with watching videos of their athletes to help improve their technique.Sprinter Timothe Fremont said that motivation was one of the biggest challenges he faced during the lockdown.Being able to train in a group that encourages you to keep doing better is a huge part of being in an athletics club.Without that, he was forced to make up schedules and ?nd his own motivation to keep pushing. The return of competitions means that athletes can look forward to seeing all their hard work ?nally recognized again.Wednesday’s competition took place in the evening, starting at 6 p.min order to give the athletes a much cooler and less windy environment to compete in.According to Quirion, heat is a huge problem for the athletes this time of year, so a competition hosted later in the day helps prevent anyone from overheating themselves.Competitions held during the day tend to attract a bigger crowd though, so the club scheduled a second competition for Saturday.Athletes from areas around Montreal, Trois Rivieres and Quebec City will come to Sherbrooke to compete, since meets held earlier in the day mean they can make it into a day trip. The Université de Sherbrooke and the Club d’Athletisme Sherbrooke will also be the home of next years’ national Legions meet. The competition is a youth oriented event for athletes between the ages of 13 and 17, and regularly brings in over 700 competitors from every province and territory.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Sherbrooke’s athletes Record Staff In a push to encourage connection with the region this summer, Tourism Eastern Townships has launched a series of eight short videos highlighting the communities in its “Coeurs villageois” project So What is a “Coeurs villageois” community? The Coeurs villageois network was of?cially launched in 2016, following a pilot project a year earlier which largely exceeded the expectations of the groups involved in the communities concerned and developed a strong sense of pride among them.“Behind the Coeur Villageois certi?cation, there is our desire to support municipalities that wish to develop harmoniously and continue to improve their tourist offering, while retaining their own color, their personality - the spirit of the place”, explained Francine Patenaude, Executive Director of Tourism Eastern Townships.Since that time the network has grown to 13 members. Each of the Coeurs villageois had to meet a very precise set of criteria to qualify for the designation, including the political will of its elected of?cials, the quality of its location, its economic and cultural dynamism, its welcome, the experience reserved for visitors and its interregional links.“The mobilization of citizens and elected of?cials is the main factor in the success of the Coeur Villageois network,” Patenaude argued.“Each of the ‘Hearts’ has its own Committee made up of proud and committed citizens who are fully involved in the development of their municipality in order to improve the unique experience of each one and make it known. The eight municipalities included in the video project (and the date on which their video clip will be released) are Sutton – August 13, Eastman – August 14, Cookshire – August 18, Piopolis August 21, Mansonville August 25, Waterloo August 28, Coaticook - September 1, and the Town of Brome Lake on September 4 Eight villages participated in the video project and Tourisme Cantons- de-l’Est gave a voice to several of these citizens in the summer of 2018 and 2019.“The videos that were shot give a very good overview of these places, and this is thanks in particular to the magni?cent images that were produced but also to the fact that we gave a voice to people who sincerely love their village,” said Isabelle Bergeron, editor- in-chief of Tourism Eastern Townships and instigator of the video series.“Each of them embodies a particular spirit unique to their community, and all of these villages form a mosaic that is truly unique to the region.“ “These videos are an invitation to visitors to meet what makes our Coeurs villageois, their community, so unique,” Bergeron concluded. The video clips can be viewed on the Tourism Eastern Townships website at https://www.cantonsdelest.com/ Following a healthy lifestyle encompasses multiple variables, such as getting enough regular exercise and proper sleep.Abstention from recreational drugs and excessive alcohol consumption will help keep you on the right track to good health.Perhaps the most important variable to following a healthy lifestyle is diet. It’s been said you can’t outrun a bad diet and there is math to back it up.Ponder this: You’ve just come in from your 30-minute run feeling beat up but happy to have burnt about 700 calories. To celebrate your achievement, you crack open a beer or two while you munch on a pre-dinner snack of a bag of potato chips. For dinner, a quarter- pounder with cheese and a side of pasta salad will take care of any lingering post-run hunger pangs. So what’s for dessert?Well, let’s do the math ?rst, then we’ll look at the dessert menu: Starting with the beer, an IPA craft beer with 8% alcohol could be 450 calories. Two beers are more than enough to erase the bene?ts of your run.A regular bag of chips may contain up to 1,242 calories. The quarter-pounder will set you back 510 calories and the pasta salad will add another 280 calories. The ?nal calorie count, including two IPA beers is a staggering 2,932 calories.Maybe we’ll skip dessert this time.To break even on your calorie intake vs.calorie burn, your 30-minute run will need to be extended to two hours and 15 minutes, which is unlikely unless you’re training to run a marathon.Or, you can do the calorie math before you dig in.Most of the time if you eat sensibly, avoid eating late at night and drink plenty of water, your 30-minute run will be the perfect balance of exercising on a regular basis combined with healthy eating.Carrie Walder is a registered dietician in servings of ?sh per week. There are many health bene?ts of ?sh - they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, high-quality protein, and micronutrients like vitamin D and iron.Omega-3s offer many health bene?ts, such as lowering one’s risk for heart disease, reducing in?ammation, and ensuring proper brain and eye development for infants and during pregnancy.” Walder reveals some of her favourite ?sh dishes: “My go-to easy seafood dishes usually involve something with salmon or shrimp! They both cook so quickly and pair well with so many foods. Some healthy recipe ideas from my blog include this Green Goddess Rice Bowl with Shrimp, this 25-Minute Baked Salmon with Pistachio Pesto, and this Roasted Vegetable Pasta Salad with Shrimp.” If you love tuna in a can, Walder adds, “I also happen to love canned seafood - it’s a super nutritious pantry staple and of course, very easy to enjoy! Some popular canned seafood recipes on my blog include this 30-Minute Mediterranean Canned Mackerel Pasta and this No-Mayo High-Protein Tuna Salad.“Seafood can de?nitely be enjoyed as a snack. For instance, I love mashing canned seafood with avocado, lemon juice, and fresh herbs. This can be enjoyed over toast or as a dip with crackers! I enjoy zucchini in a ratatouille, sliced thinly and grilled on the BBQ, on a brochette with other tasty veggies (and tempeh!), and many other ways, including combined with chocolate! Inspired by my childhood favourite chocolate zucchini cake and an oil-free muf?n recipe by Oh She Glows, I have created the PERFECT chocolate muf?n.So, if you have a ton of zucchinis to enjoy, and you are a fellow chocolate lover, why not try out this recipe?Chocolate zucchini muf?ns Makes 12 muf?ns 10-15 minutes prep time 18-20 minutes bake time Ingredients 1 tablespoon ground chia seeds (15 ml) 3 tablespoons of warm water (45 ml) 1 1/4 cups of unsweetened soy milk (or any other vegetable milk) (300 ml) 1 tablespoon of vinegar (15 ml) 1/2 cup of sugar (125 ml) 2 1/2 cups of whole wheat and white ?our (625 ml) 1/2 cup of cocoa powder (125 ml) 1 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder (7.5 ml) 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (2.5 ml) 1/2 teaspoon of salt (2.5 ml) 2 cups of grated zucchini (500 ml) 1/2 cup of dark chocolate chips (125 ml) Instructions 1.Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.2.In a large bowl, mix the ground chia seeds with the warm water to make a « vegan egg ».3.In a 2-cup measuring cup, mix the soy milk and the vinegar to make « vegan buttermilk ».Wait a few minutes.4.Mix together the « egg », the « buttermilk » and the sugar.5.Add the dry ingredients (the ?our, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt) and mix well.6.Finally, add the zucchini and chocolate chips to the bowl and mix one last time.7.Drop the batter into a pre- greased muf?n tin and bake for 18-20 minutes.Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Page 24 Friday, August 14, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Stay healthy while working out Dear Annie FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2020 Dear Annie: Our local gym opened back up recently.Only half the machines are in use, to encourage social distancing, and only half the lockers and bathroom stalls are available. We’re supposed to all wear masks, but of course, sometimes masks come off during exercise when people are breathing hard or jostling around.I understand that that happens. What bothers me is that there is one guy who never wipes down the equipment when he’s done using it.I see him almost every time I’m at the gym, and it really ticks me off. With everything that is going on, it just seems especially ignorant or rude.I’ve given him pointed looks but that’s about it.Would I be out of line saying something to him?- Gym Rat Dear Gym Rat: Who could take issue with a friendly reminder like “Don’t forget to wipe down the machines”?That said, now, as before the pandemic, it’s always best to assume the person before you forgot to sanitize the equipment.Give everything a thorough wipe down with a disinfectant that has been proven to kill the coronavirus germs, such as Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, Lysol Brand All-Purpose Cleaner or hydrogen peroxide.(Find a full list at epa.gov/coronavirus.) You should also check with management: They should have employees frequently passing through the facility and disinfecting all equipment as well as issuing reminders over the intercom to encourage patrons to do the same.A germy gym is no place to get healthy.Dear Annie: In this trying time - or anytime - could you please remind all parents not to let their children snub, belittle and malign substitute teachers.I had 34 years of teaching experience when I substituted. Each time I substituted, I had children under age 8, who would: not stand upon request, not put books, crayons away upon request and not pick up a dropped pencil or jacket upon request.Don’t parents teach children we are taking their place as adults responsible for their care?Don’t parents know we all have college degrees and are trained to teach? Some like me have specialty certi?cations and get called in for that reason alone. Also, it would be wonderful if teachers left a weekly lesson plan book in the desk by Friday night in the event of illness or tragedy over the weekend.- Besieged Substitute Dear Besieged: I don’t know why having a substitute teacher that brings out the worst even in the best-behaved classes, but it does.I’m grateful for substitute teachers who keep showing up for our children in spite of this treatment. We need you! Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Tipped Off” about whether or not you should tip for a massage or dermabrasion when it is done in a doctor’s of?ce with a smirk on my face.I am a retired massage therapist, and I had my own private practice.I did accept tips but did not expect them.I believe when the service is done in a private practice or in a spa, tipping is acceptable. But if done in a doctor’s of?ce, no tipping should be done.Generally speaking, those who perform those services in a doctor’s of?ce are paid more, and some even have bene?ts.Additionally, the services are likely covered by insurance if done in a doctor’s of?ce.- Jeanie M., Of?ce Specialist Dear Jeanie: I heard this sentiment from several massage therapists and doctors’ of?ce workers following that letter. As always, I appreciate readers’ expertise.Dear Annie: You’ve probably heard this story a hundred times before. One of my daughters is in an abusive marriage. It is not physical but verbal abuse. Her husband is incredibly controlling: My daughter has no access to money or even mail. She has no freedom of choice in what she does, and he attempts to isolate her from family. He manipulates every situation, every possible situation to his advantage. My daughter knows that she has full support from her parents and siblings, yet she freezes when she thinks of actually taking the step to leave him. They have a 6-year-old daughter who seems emotionally fragile; I suspect this is from what she has observed at home. How do I support my daughter when I am so frustrated and saddened by how broken she is?What do I say to assure her that I am ready to help her, but she has to do the heavy lifting?- Always a Mom Dear Always: I know it’s frustrating and heartbreaking to watch a loved one in an abusive relationship. But if your daughter feels as though you’re angry or frustrated with her, it only plays into his hand. You must keep the faith and keep the patience.According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, on average a survivor will leave their abuser seven times before leaving them for good. And it isn’t because they’re broken or weak; it’s because it’s an extremely dif?cult situation for anyone to leave, for a variety of reasons: fear of retaliation, a sense of shame or embarrassment or a lack of ?nancial resources, to name just a few.The more you understand the complexities of abuse, the more you will sympathize with your daughter’s apparent hesitation.Visit https://www.thehotline.org or call 1-800-799-7233 anytime for information, resources and support. It’s free and con?dential.Dear Annie: “Deliberating Diarist” and others who have asked about what to do with a diary of their most intimate thoughts and experiences might do well to take the long view.As a historian, I have read many diaries, journals and memoirs, some of which were never intended to be read by someone decades or even centuries later. What I have found in those diaries is the spirit of people who conquered life’s tragedies and dif?culties and moved forward often to a good life.Personal diaries can be roadmaps for future generations. They help us navigate our own rocky roads.“Deliberating Diarist” has a great treasure in her complete diary. Her children will see her and her husband’s struggles and their triumph over alcoholism. This might increase their affection and admiration for their grandfather and offer lessons in persistence and love.Even the saddest diaries help us understand how real lives are lived and help us ?nd beauty and goodness in our own lives. For those who are wondering about leaving a diary to a historic institution, they should ask if their diary can be set aside for some period of time - maybe 50 years - so that sensitive names and events will not hurt living people. This is often possible and eventually gives historians the raw material from which we recreate the history of ordinary people.- Historian Dear Historian: I appreciate your wide-lens perspective and professional opinion. Thanks for taking the time to write.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
