PM#0040007682 Friday, November 20, 2020 Legault proposes moral contract for Christmas By Matthew McCully Quebecers can have gatherings of up to 10 people between Dec.24- 27 over the holidays, but they will have to sign on the dotted line of a moral contract before sending out party invites.Premier Francois Legault said he is counting on people to agree to limit their contact the week before and the week after the four-day gathering window to make sure what happens at Christmas, stays at Christmas. As for the idea of extending the Christmas break for Schools, Legault said online learning days will be tacked onto the break, so it will be considered teaching time and not extra vacation. As of Thursday, Dec.17 elementary and high schools will shift from in- person classes to online learning for the two to four days left before the break, depending on the school board. For the return to school, elementary students will return to in-person classes 281 Sherbrooke St., Magog 819 769-0552 Manufacture training, so it is not surprising that most of his books are about the physical world. He was plying his trade as a geologist in Uganda when he was moved by James Morris’s Coronation Everest, an account of Sir Edmund Hillary’s ascent of Mt.Everest, to want to become a writer. He wrote to Morris for advice and was told to get out of the mines and start writing. So he became a newspaper reporter, spending the largest part of his career in the employ of the Manchester Guardian.Paci?c: Silicon Chips and Surfboards, Coral Reefs and Atom Bombs, Brutal Dictators, Fading Empires, and the Coming Collision of the World’s Superpowers (2015), in spite of what the title might suggest, is not a history of the Paci?c Ocean.Rather, in this work Winchester delves into ten topics that have had their origins or their greatest impact in or around the planet’s largest body of water since 1950.For example, in a chapter titled On Carbon (which has nothing to do with global-warming), he argues that we should make 1950 the zero year for setting calendars. That was the year when, thanks to the development of nuclear weapons, there was suf?cient extra radiation in the atmosphere to render carbon dating of objects in the future much more dif?cult than it had been before. As one can glean from the title, Winchester has chosen a rather eclectic selection of subjects: some deal with only the physical features of earth, sea, and sky; others focus on the interaction between the physical world and the humans who inhabit it; and others deal almost exclusively with the interaction of humans with each other. It is evident that to a large degree Winchester is cribbing from himself. He has published some 25 books, several of which overlap with the material he presents in Paci?c.Not surprisingly, Winchester is at his best when he is dealing with the physical world. He typically begins with a very strong hook to set up a deeper analysis. For example, he starts with the voyages of the submersible Alvin to lead into a discussion of the discovery of hot water vents on the ?oor of the oceans and the ridge lines in the middle of the oceans.Similarly he uses the super cyclone Tracy, which hammered Darwin, Australia in 1974, as a lead-in to an examination of the effect of El Ninos not just on the Paci?c, but also on global weather patterns. The parts on the interactions between people, such as the potential con?ict between China and its neighbours around the South China Sea, tend to be the weakest because much of this material is speculation on Winchester’s part. There is a great deal to be learned from this book.Winchester gives very clear explanations of the impact of nuclear weapons testing not just on the atmosphere, but on the lives of Paci?c islanders who were displaced to protect them from the blasts and who remain displaced 70 years later. The description of the Ring of Fire is also very well done.Winchester emphasizes that the whole idea of tectonic plates sliding over or beside each other is a very recent concept. We tend to think of this idea as being old hat, but it was developed only in the 60s and not generally accepted for a couple of decades after that.Like DNA testing, which most of us now regard as routine, tectonic plates and shifts are an innovation in science that occurred during the lifetimes of most of the present population. Not only is Winchester’s writing very solid, but the maps and illustrations he uses are a big help in elucidating his stories. The garbage islands in the Paci?c, composed mostly of ?oating plastic and other synthetic materials, occur where they do for well-de?ned reasons. The maps show how winds and currents combine to push all this man-made debris, most of which is discarded close to coastlines, into the positions they occupy in the middle of the ocean. If I have a gripe about this book, it is with the actual printing. The font, speci?cally with regards to punctuation, occasions frequent misreading. The semi-colons are printed with the period slightly to the left of the comma underneath. As a result, one tends to read the semicolons as commas. This causes the rest of the sentence not to make any sense, so the reader has to keep backtracking to get reoriented.Winchester has been nominated for many awards for his writing and was named an of?cer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2006.He now lives in western Massachusetts. The Lennoxville Library has half a dozen of his books, including Paci?c and one audio book.Another half dozen are available through inter-library loan, including some in French.Ocean’s Ten PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY Reporter Although the Eastern Townships has been designated a red zone, university, college and high school residential buildings are remaining open during the holiday break and there are no signs of a mass exodus of students.Bishop’s University Dean of Student Affairs Stine Linden-Andersen told The Record they are not planning to shut down. And while a majority of classes are moving to an online format, many students living in residence have made no mention of leaving their dorm rooms.“This could change tomorrow, you know, we’re seeing what the students are deciding and trying to support them in making the choice that’s best for them,” said Linden-Andersen, acknowledging the unpredictability of the pandemic. The university is also receiving an in?ux of international students for the winter semester, after the student visa process was delayed by several months due to the COVID-19 outbreak and Canada imposed strict border restrictions.Students coming from outside of the country will be placed in a mandatory two-week quarantine, per the Quebec government’s instructions. The university set up speci?c areas for students in quarantine. And Bishop’s is providing meals and other support services.Linden-Andersen added that there are strict rules for people living on campus, especially for visitation.Students are currently not allowed to bring any outside visitors into residence, she said, which is in accordance with other Quebec universities. But, she continued, students are allowed to leave campus. They aren’t prisoners, Linden-Andersen joked, Lennoxville is their home.At the end of the day, she said, the university is putting a lot of responsibility in the hands of its students; and so far it’s been positive.“What we try to do, you know, this is really not a case where we tell them what to do and they have to do it because we say so, this is a case of if we all want to keep this community as safe as we can, then we all have to work together to ?gure this out,” said Linden-Andersen.Ross Murray, director of communications at Stanstead College, said the high school is maintaining status quo when it comes to its student residence buildings. The only thing that changed, he explained, is how they handle day students. After the province turned red last week, Murray said the school offered students living in the area a chance to move into its campus residence bubble to avoid having those students going completely to remote learning. But, he explained, the situation is constantly in motion.“Honestly, because it’s so unpredictable, we’re going really months at a time, so this gets us to Dec.4 when our term ends and then we’re not back until Jan.6.We have to factor our international students in there too,” said Murray.Stanstead is home to a large international student population.Murray said many of the school’s overseas students have been studying online since the start of the school year, waiting for student visas.A student from Japan arrived in Stanstead earlier this week.“We have all of those international students to deal with, so what’s happening there is a lot of them will stay on campus for the duration of the break,” he said.“We have essentially a Christmas camp happening, so we’ll have activities for those kids to do.” Some students are going home for the holidays, though, according to Murray, which means they need to come up with a return plan. The idea is to have students return between Jan.4 and 6, he said, where they will quarantine on campus together for two weeks.Classes will begin Jan.7, but everybody is doing it online for two weeks and then everybody is back on campus, in person, on Jan.21, Murray continued. But this is all tentative. The hope is that by the time they return the Townships will be back to an orange or yellow alert.“We’re hoping by then the red zone will be over and our day students can go back and forth, but we don’t know, so we’ll have to see,” said Murray.Champlain College Lennoxville Campus Director Nancy Beattie said she hasn’t seen any lease cancellations since the region went into COVID-19 high alert.Residence buildings stay open throughout the holidays, she said, all the school asks is for students to be responsible.Students come from all over Quebec to attend Champlain and live on campus. They aren’t holding any of them back from travelling home for the holidays. But, Beattie said, the school has been preaching caution and awareness since September.“When we were an orange region and we had students living in the red regions we were really discouraging them from going home, but we can’t prevent them from doing that,” said Beattie.“All we can do is educate, so we really emphasize the education and awareness portion.” Schools adjust campus protocols with international students entering Townships as planned between Jan 5-7, while secondary students will resume with online learning until Jan.11.Employers are asked to encourage telework wherever possible, and businesses are asked to pare down activities anywhere possible before and after Christmas.Specialized schools will stay open, Legault said.On the days when schools move to online learning, daycare services will remain open for essential workers only, mainly healthcare workers, teachers and daycare staff.“There’s an if to what we’re proposing,” Legault said.If the situation continues to deteriorate and the stress on the health system becomes too great, the Christmas moral contract will become null and void.Regarding other red zone measures currently in place, Legault said there are still too many cases of COVID-19 con?rmed daily, so restaurant dining rooms, gyms and concert venues will remain closed until Jan.11.Quebec reported 1,207 new cases yesterday, bringing the total number of people infected to 128,440.There were 34 new deaths, for total of 6,744.The number of hospitalizations decreased by 1 compared to the previous day, for a cumulative total of 651.Among those, the number of people in intensive care increased by 1, for a total of 101.The Estrie region reported 66 new cases yesterday for a local total of 3,841.Long-term care facilities continue to be added to the CIUSSS de l’Estrie- CHUS outbreak watchlist. Most recently, a second sector of Sherbrooke’s Hôpital et centre d’hébergement D’Youville has a new outbreak of less than ?ve residents.A similar outbreak was declared at the Centre d’hébergement Villa- Bonheur in Granby, involving up to ?ve employees and residents. An outbreak of 10 cases (seven residents, three employees) was declared yesterday at the CHSLD Vigi Shermont, a private subsidized facility in Sherbrooke.Christmas plans CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED Rev.Carole Martignacco 1)We all encounter tests in our lives, whether they be challenging personal experiences, broken relationships or dif?cult people, or the tough world news that ?lls our minds so much these days.So many of these experiences challenge us because they touch on our vulnerabilities, they meet us where we are sensitive or unsure of ourselves. We try to respond to these challenges with clarity, and accept that often we make mistakes.Daily life always has these built-in ups and downs, and so many of us felt we were ready to take on anything that came our way. Then came the pandemic. As we make our way through these dif?cult times and all of the separation and brokenness that goes along with it, we might not be sure how we will even be able to move forward. No amount of preparation could have made us ready for this unbelievable experience, and these days it seems like we are going through even more tests of our strength and willpower than we can fathom. We hope that we can pass these tests with ?ying colors, but the reality is that we sometimes encounter challenges that leave us just as unsure of ourselves as when we began. In the Jewish tradition, the idea of Teshuva, deep change, really is only realized not when one test is passed or one problem is solved, but when you encounter the same challenge again and are able to make your way through it with less dif?culty. The ?rst time was tough but looking the problem in the eyes a second time is not as bad.We can see everything that we are experiencing now and understand it as one more life lesson which can hopefully make us stronger. We know we can’t live a life free of challenge.Yet when we encounter a dif?cult moment, we can hold on to the lessons we learn, so the next time we will be ready. This is the true test.2) These days it seems that every week there are new struggles to face.We have to be ready for anything. At the beginning of the pandemic people went on mammoth shopping sprees.Toilet paper very quickly became dif?cult to ?nd.Readiness meant buying stuff. For some people that was already a habit.I have memories of bridge night at a friend’s house. We played in the basement and he showed me his storeroom once. His partner would stock up on whatever was on sale at Costco. There was at least 3 years worth of tomato juice, and even more cans of tuna ?sh.Again, readiness meant possessions.I live a simpler life.Readiness for me makes me think of my faith journey, and emotional preparation. In my lifetime there have been many extremely dif?cult circumstances that I have lived through.Eventually I realized that I was not alone, that there was a quiet divine presence.I also reached out to family and friends, and they were there for me in an instant. Now I have a person for everything.I have a computer guy, a camera guy, a mechanics guy, an electrician guy (my brother), a salad lady, a face mask maker, even a book store person.I belong to a writing group, a breakfast fellowship, and a faith discussion group. My church community may be small, but they also help me cope with life’s struggles. The past nine months have been drastic, but together we have survived.Readiness, for me, in not about accumulating things, but gathering people to share with and help us when needed.3) Readiness.I have put on my winter tires, helped put up the car shelter and got out my winter boots, hats and gloves.I’m just about ready for winter.Having been caught more than once with my summer tires on when the ?rst snowstorm hit, I have a healthy appreciation for readiness. However, something inside resists the self-satisfaction that accrues from being ready.Life is never as predictable as we like to think. There have been many critics of government and public health of?cials in the last eight months, claiming we should have been better prepared.Yet is this really a reasonable critique?Do we expect our world leaders to shelter us from every possible threat?Accidents happen, tragedies occur and new viruses develop. When they do we need to use all our energy to look forward, to join forces and mend what is broken.Life is inherently fraught with danger. It is fragile and yet precious.Developing the ability to be ?exible when a crisis occurs brings out the very best of our God-given creativity.Grappling with the unexpected teaches us that we are so much stronger when we all row in the same direction.Collaboration is the only way forward. It tests our human biases; it expands our understanding of one another, and it brings us to the next level of consciousness. In a nutshell coming face to face with the unexpected challenges us to become better human beings.4) Are you ready?” the painfully energetic voice of our ?tness trainer would relentlessly intone.Much of the time, we were not.We were far from ready for whatever stretching, lifting, jumping or otherwise self-torturing routine was about to commence.Yet we were there, lined up in our jogging suits. And we’d signed on for this Boxing for Parkinson’s program, so our ragtag assembly would usually groan and shrug, straighten our spines, take a deep breath and otherwise rally ourselves to some semblance of readiness. And we’d survive the grueling obstacle course before us to cheer each other on for the next round. In this Covid course we’re all enrolled in, we need to be ready for whatever is coming next. We’ve none of us ever run this race before, and we are being stretched in ways not of our choosing.Living into the unknown with a sense of openness to how our patience, equanimity or compassion will be tested requires a new level of soul ?tness.Meditation is my spiritual heavy- lifting routine. In my morning mindfulness practice I settle into the silence and hunker down to center in calm awareness.Letting go of expectations or judgments, taking time to be fully present to the now, focusing on the simple act of breathing ~ this is the kind of ?tness training I need to maintain my ?exibility. As the day wears on, and the news of the outside world rushes in, I know I can return to this peaceful place I carry within me.Someone recently posted this bit of anonymous wisdom: We are not stuck at home; we are safe at home.It requires ?exibility of spirit to reframe things. We none of us volunteered for this program, yet we can choose to develop the inner strength to not only endure but live through this time with grace and gratitude.Knowing somehow, we’ll all be stronger by willfully putting ourselves through the paces. So, I ask you, “Are you ready?” Ready to do what we must in order to get ourselves ready to make it through the next round? One word, four voices, and as always we turn it over to you. What does readiness mean to you?How do you get ready for what life will send next?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rabbi Boris Dolin leads the Dorshei-Emet community in Montreal; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco, Unitarian Universalist is retired from ministry Page 5 Record Staff Quebec’s Ministry of Public Security (MSP) is advising the public that it will be conducting a test of the province’s public alert system on Wednesday, November 25, at 1:55 p.m.At the appointed time, a test message will be broadcast on television, radio, compatible wireless devices connected to an LTE network, on the ministry’s website and on the MSP’s Twitter and Facebook accounts. The message, which will specify that there is no real emergency and no danger to the health or safety of citizens, is intended to make the population aware of the display of the alert and sound signal in the event of a life-threatening situation. The “Québec En Alerte” system is meant to help quickly inform the public if there is need to take shelter or adopt other safety behaviors due, for example, to a risk of explosion, gas leak, ?ash ?ood, forest ?re, tornado or other threat. It also allows the quick dissemination of an Amber alert aimed at identifying a child whose life could be in danger. It is not possible to unsubscribe from this essential service. However, not all citizens will receive the alert test on their wireless phone. To receive the alert, the cell phone must be compatible and connected to an LTE network at the time the alert is initiated. The emergency alert system is meant to complement traditional media, social media and other citizen alert tools available to municipalities, such as automatic call machines and other software allowing massive sending of text messages or emails.Alert messages will be sent in French and in English in order to reach the highest number of people as possible across Quebec.Quebec’s alert system is part of a pan Canadian effort to implement electronic alert systems across the country and Wednesday’s test will coincide with tests in other regions of Canada.Since implementation in 2018, more than 100 alert messages have been successfully delivered during real situations.Anyone wishing to test the compatibility of their phone or just ?nd out more information on the alert system can visit http://www.alertready.ca/ By Gordon Lambie Already facing challenges for ?- nancial reasons, the COVID-19 pandemic made for a quiet year at the Compton County Historical Museum Society, also known as the Eaton Corner Museum.Whereas in February Vice-President Sharon Moore told The Record that the volunteer-run society would need to redouble their fundraising efforts and try to attract new visitors, the arrival of the novel coronavirus meant that the museum never opened its doors to the public at all.“We just felt we couldn’t even really put into place what would be needed,” Moore said, explaining that, ?nances aside, six out of nine board members are over seventy and two of the remaining three have compromised immune systems. As a result, the society’s board did not feel it was feasible to open to the public, given the workload that would be lumped upon a severely limited team.“Even if we could have had someone to work at the museum, say in our archives, we would have to have put in place health and safety measures and one of the directors would have to have gone two to three times per week to be in a supervisory position for the summer student. We just felt it we weren’t able.” While she turned ?rst to the internal challenges that would have faced the museum in opening, the Vice President also noted that the majority of those who come to visit Eaton Corner each year are seniors, meaning that very likely attendance would have been very limited even if they had managed to open their doors. That core demographic of seniors, combined with restrictions on public gatherings, also meant that the usual fundraising events, as well as any of the new ideas that had been proposed for this year, were out.“We just couldn’t see how we could manage to do anything, which meant needing to be very careful with the funds we do have,” Moore said, explaining that with plans to reopen again when it is possible, the museum cannot afford to cut ?xed costs like its phone line, insurance, or hydro bills. The vice president stressed, however, that not being open does not mean that the society has been inactive.“The museum is very quiet this year, but I have made a point as vice president of checking on the buildings at least once every week,” she said, sharing that she is aware of other members of the board having made similar rounds on a regular basis.More than just having a physical presence onsite, she said that the society has also been responsive to questions on its Facebook page, and was actively involved in the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network’s recent virtual fall fair and annual general meeting.“We’re not closing ourselves off, we are still seen by the public,” Moore af?rmed, sharing that an effort has been made to do what can be done, even if it doesn’t seem like very much.Under these more complicated circumstances, the vice president expressed a feeling that the decision to stay closed was the right one.“Not that we wanted to stay closed, but doing so took a burden off,” she said.Looking to the future, Moore said that there is every intention to get things back up and running as soon as it is safe and possible to do so.“We’re hoping we might be able to open in 2021, but we don’t now,” she said.“It all depends on what happens with this virus.” As to the ?nancial challenges the museum was facing earlier this year, Moore acknowledged that closing put matters on pause, rather than making them go away.“It’s serious,” she said, pointing out that the museum has received no ?nancial support from the federal or provincial governments.“It’s hard to ask for a grant for your operational costs. We’re just trying to see what we can ?nd and hoping that things turn out better in the coming year.” One area where matters have changed since February is that of the loan the society had taken out to acquire the neighbouring Foss House property. With the museum facing a consistent inability to pay down the capital, the town of Cookshire-Eaton has taken over the loan and ownership of the lot.Asked what this means for the museum’s ability to continue using the space, Moore said that it’s not clear because the change is new, but she said she has faith that the arrangement will be a positive one.“They have been supportive of us in the past,” she said.Public alert system test coming next Wednesday “The museum is very quiet this year” LINDA HOY to not proceed with the event,” said Vicky Bélanger, director of ?nance and communications at Maison Aube- Lumière.“Instead, we decided to prerecord those who would have spoken and launched the campaign that way.” Last year, the poinsettia campaign raised more than $133,000 for the Maison Aube-Lumière and, each year, the campaign makes a signi?cant contribution to the continuation of services at the home.“Those who come here are able to access our services free of charge,” said Bélanger.“That’s why our fundraising efforts are so important. They keep us open for those who need us.” Since 1997, The Maison Aube- Lumière has housed and cared for more than 3,300 people with advanced cancer free of charge. Each year, the volunteers are required to raise a total of $1 million in order to keep their doors open. With the uncertainty of the health crisis, homes like Maison Aube-Lumière were lucky enough to receive government funding to support their services.“Our goal for the poinsettia campaign is $110,000,” said Bélanger.“We’re always hopeful and, even though this is less than what we raised last year, we should reach our annual goal with this campaign.” Poinsettias will be available to purchase starting on Nov.21 at the Serres St-Élie greenhouses on Industriel Boulevard in Sherbrooke, which is where they’re also grown.“They receive them very small in July,” said Bélanger.“They then raise them there in a greenhouse reserved just for us.This year, we have 6,400 to sell and we’re hoping to have them all gone!” There is also an online shop where members of the public can purchase poinsettias and have them delivered to their homes.“We have more volunteers this year to help with delivery because a lot of people, especially the elderly, are preferring to stay home,” said Bélanger, sharing that people will also be able to purchase poinsettias at the Carrefour de L’Estrie from Dec.3 to 13, in a store dedicated just to the campaign.“We want to encourage people to come and buy them,” added Bélanger.“We don’t know what Christmas will be like just yet, so come and buy some color and cheer to add to your decoration.” To purchase your poinsettias online visit: https://www.boutiqueaubelumiere.com/ Aube-Lumière poinsettia campaign CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER judged. Can we blame people for wondering when Christmas is held up every day as the motivational carrot?I’m at the disadvantage of writing this before whatever announcement was made Thursday evening, but setting aside the fact that we’re way past possibility of a “normal” Christmas no matter what people do, it’s not just hope for time off from our collective trauma that is fuelling this “obsession”.Questions about what comes next have very practical reasons for existing, particularly for those with children.Anyone who has to balance work and kids at home for an unknown period of time without being able to go anywhere or see anyone is going to want to have a clear idea to work from as soon as possible. My Take: By Matthew McCully My Take: By Gordon Lambie Politicians choose their words carefully. The good ones, at least. So it’s pretty rare that you will hear something during a press conference that was said by mistake.Sometimes it’s planting a seed, sometimes it’s testing the waters, but it is always deliberate.I’m not a fan of that tactic.I would much rather a government make a decision and commit to a plan than throw a bunch of stuff at the public and see what sticks.I think that’s the difference between true leadership and self- preservation. When a government is acting in the best interests of the population as a whole, they give you the good, the bad and the ugly.Tossing out half plans and unclear directives and keeping a record of the public pushback is a way to avoid making dif?cult decisions and absolving a government of any responsibility for its failures. My Take: By Michael Boriero It takes me a good hour to get into any body of water; a pool, a lake, the ocean. It could be 40 degrees outside and you’ll still catch me pacing around in circles, dipping my toes in here and there, before slowly submerging myself and realizing the water really isn’t that cold. While this may seem completely inconsequential, the Quebec government has been using a similar tactic throughout the entirety of the pandemic. They are always testing the waters when it comes to implementing new guidelines or imposing new restrictions. But this is a pandemic.I hope that at this point people understand the gravity of the situation.Cases are up with no signs of decline in the last few weeks. It’s time to stop pussyfooting around the subject.Quebecers want a return to normal life.We understand that this comes at a cost.My Take: By Reann Fournier When our governments are making decisions and testing the waters by speaking about them before making a ?nal announcement, they’re practicing good leadership by consulting the public.Doing this lets the population have a voice concerning decisions that likely affect their daily lives.I can understand some people’s frustration if these ‘pre-announcements’ do not come to fruition, but it allows for people to plan accordingly. If we take a look at the possibility for an extension on Christmas breaks, for example, those who are hoping to travel to different regions to see family may be able to consider this as a possible plan.As our region is highly populated by university students, they are able to begin their plans to head home for the holidays, which is what everyone would want.I say that discussing decisions like this is part of a good democratic process.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL disenfranchised world (.) A ‘great unraveling,’ or a renewal of our imperilled world?“We now see there is great urgency, but there is also agency. We can all be part of this solution. We can make a better future.” – Michael Mann, climate scientist Many of us have found the state of the world to be particularly bleak.Red zones of the pandemic throughout Québec promise, once again, to make life more dif?cult than ever as we approach winter. The U.S.election circus poses more dangers for democracy, and it pushes the pandemic to the side even as more Americans die of the virus.Meanwhile, Trump’s multi-faceted carnage is its own little universe causing a worldwide unravelling of basic ecological and social prerequisites for a healthy society. The growing international ecological instability is made worse with Canadian hypocrisy and steadfast refusal to agree when it comes to federal and provincial subsidies for oil and gas production.Canada is the G20’s worst regime for climate- destructive ?nancial backing on a per- GDP basis.More speci?cally, the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project (TMX), which goes across unceded First Nation lands, is putting into place catastrophic consequences for these lands and their peoples.TMX has already started.A poignant short video puts all of the fossil fuel companies’ pro-economic assertions into a human context: tinyurl.com/land-defenders- tmx If that isn’t enough, a photographic essay by Garth Lenz showing the route of TMX across pristine parts of Alberta and British Columbia: www.policynote.ca/no-tmx-photos is particularly convincing. And if this project isn’t a recipe for ecocide, maybe Justin Trudeau, Canada’s ardent and unapologetic TMX buyer and not-so-honourable salesman, can inform us of a greater disaster in the making. On top of the multiple sets of crises headed by climate breakdown, accelerated biodiversity loss and the ever-increasing rise of authoritarianism, the world is being further destabilized by the pandemic. How can we hope to act positively in an increasingly disenfranchised world when most people are experiencing daily existential assaults on their wellbeing, or even begin to think about future generations?Laurie Laybourn-Langton of Post Carbon Institute recently interviewed 15 leading activists, thinkers and futurists about crucial topics such as food, climate, energy, planetary systems, inequality, imperialism and geopolitics.Under the banner “The Great Unraveling?” he examines the interconnected crises that can unravel the fabric of this world, and acknowledges that in order to realize a better future, efforts to realize a more sustainable, equitable and resilient world must be capable of navigating the compounding crises of a more destabilized future. In a forthcoming article he will be looking in depth at positive ways to respond to these crises.www.postcarbon.org/great-unraveling/ Michael Mann is one of the world’s most in?uential climate scientists.I have read his articles, followed his courageous actions, read a book of his on climate sceptics and heard him speak. In the Post Carbon Institute conversation entitled ‘How bad is the climate crisis?’ we learn from him that ‘agency’ is a key indispensable ingredient in preventing a 2C or 3C warmer world.Mann tells us that the 1.2C increase in temperature that we currently ?nd ourselves in need not accelerate into a ‘civilization-ending’ scenario. The metaphor he uses is that of a carbon highway that permits us, if we have the will to do so, to exit quickly, but he wants us to realize that a 1.6C exit, for example, is much better than not getting off this road at all, if we miss the 1.5C exit that we strive to aim for.If the forecast of a safe world is to become a reality, we must lower emissions by seven per cent each year for this decade by decarbonizing as fast as we can.The economic impacts as a result of the pandemic created a four to seven per cent reduction for 2020.And Mann reminds us of “the remarkable coalescence of renewed global advocacy and activism on climate led by the children, led by Greta Thunberg and other youth climate activists, who have really recentred this conversation where it needs to be: on intergenerational ethics.” To further address this critical issue, Thomas Homer-Dixon’s just-published book, Commanding Hope: The Power We Have to Renew a World in Peril, will be discussed in my next article in some detail.Homer-Dixon states, “The best way to ensure we’ll fail to solve our problems is to believe we can’t.” His book goes on to develop in an insightful way the means to create new pathways to a safer and positive future. We’ll also look at the role of young people in creating a more just world. The pandemic has given us time to think. It has opened up the global conversation to include in a most visceral dimension our abusive relationship with Nature and our social justice failures. At the same time, the youth generation has risen in outrage to demand a just future. In the GEM series The Nature of Things, David Suzuki’s documentary, Rebellion, connects us persuasively to the young people around the world who are demanding a new politics of hope for our planet.tinyurl.com/suzuki-rebellion The activist group Extinction Rebellion features prominently in The Nature of Things. The group asks politicians to “tell the truth” about the climate and biodiversity crisis. We each need to tell ourselves that same truth. The undisputed urgency for action can catapult us to a world-saving agency.Take time on 30 November to participate in the Remembrance Day for Lost Species. We are asked to re?ect on and commit to exploring “the stories of species, cultures, lifeways and habitats driven extinct by unjust power structures and exploitation, past and ongoing.” With acknowledgement and, most importantly, determination, a new ‘normal’ can be a world of ?ourishing.www.lostspeciesday.org Douglas Nadler Can you place these train stations: answers Here are the answers from Wednesday’s train station quiz: Station 4: Foster: It was originally part of the South Eastern Railway (SER) line between Sutton Junction and Waterloo that was completed in late 1879.The SER was acquired by Canadian Paci?c Railway (CPR) and the station pictured was built in 1887 under the CPR.It was closed in the late 1970s and, in 1995, the station at Foster was moved to Lakeside Road as the Brome Lake Welcome Centre.Station 5: Compton: Compton was part of the St.Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad’s feat of completing the ?rst international railway and successfully linking Montreal to the ice-free port of Portland, ME in 1853.Following its completion, the Canadian portion was sold to the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR), which operated it until it was absorbed by Canadian National Railway in 1923.Built around 1900 by the GTR, the Compton station was closed in the 1970s and the building sold and moved to Stanstead East, where it is used as a private residence.Station 6: South Stukely: This station stop made its ?rst appearance when the Huntington Mining Railway was built in the early 1870s to provide the mines access to railway transportation of its copper ore.The line was later integrated into the Waterloo & Magog Railway when this railway line was extended to Magog. The Canadian Paci?c Railway (CPR) later operated through South South Stukely and built the pictured station, which was replaced by a larger one.The South Stukely station was among the earlier casualties of a railway era in decline and was demolished in the 1950s or 1960s.How did you do?Kudos to those who recognized some or all and check in next week for another batch of stations to identify! You can dress it as you like. Can I put fruit on my pizza?Absolutely! I’ve been seeing Instagram and Pinterest posts where people are putting sliced pears and ?gs mixed with ?avourful and spicy sausage.I have not tried it myself, but I think that if you can imagine it and appeals to your taste buds, why not.Pizza toppings are really only limited by our imaginations.A word of caution though, you just want to be careful about the humidity of the toppings, you really want to avoid having a soggy bottom crust. How can I get the bottom crust crispy?Lately I have been experimenting with baking my pizzas directly on the grill on a sheet of parchment paper.Without the tray, the heat is will make the bottom crust even crispier. You can prepare the pizza on a tray and slide the parchment paper directly onto the grill.Without a pizza peel it may be a challenge getting the pizza out of the oven, but with the help of a spatula you can easily slide it directly to a tray or plate. If you don’t have parchment paper, try aluminium foil. How long will the pizza dough last?A week in the refrigerator and about 3 moths in the freezer. Can I freeze my uncooked pizza?Yes, I do that frequently, just let it thaw out about half an hour to an hour before baking it at 500 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes on the middle rack. What do I do if I want smoked salmon or prosciutto on my pizza? For smoked salmon, I pre-bake the pizza shell and let it cool before adding cream cheese, smoked salmon, onions, tomatoes and capers. For a prosciutto pizza, add the cold meat just after taking the pizza out of the oven, that way the cured meat will not get cooked or dried out.Add a few fresh Basil leaves to it and enjoy! I will be at the Cookshire, Marché de Noël, on Saturday, November 29, 2020, from 10am to 4pm at Victoria Hall, 125 rue Principale W.Hope to see you there.I will be happy to answer any of your pizza the minute she opened her eyes, her ears were already ?lled with music and her heart was beating to the sound of the drums. In reality, Rogers was born in Sherbrooke in 1973, and as long as she can remember, she knew that music would be part of her life. She gave it her all to make that happen.“As a child, it was clear that I wanted to be a musician.” Rogers said.“My father was a drummer, and he held the practices at our house.I was three or four and I already wanted to be part of such a beautiful musical adventure.I had a love for country music even at that age.” Her ?rst musical instrument, a red and white harmonica made for kids by Fisher Price, meant everything to her and con?rmed the fact that music would be signi?cant in her life.“I played the harmonica every day, trying to replicate the melodies of the songs I heard on the radio,” she explained.“I was also composing little melodies. My passion for the harmonica lasted for a while but as time went by, what I truly wanted was to play drums in a band like my father. With all my heart I wished my dreams would come true.” Rogers made a point of attending all of her father’s band rehearsals.Music was gradually becoming her world.Every musician and singer involved with the group was a big star in her eyes.Looking back, she said that she remembers well the few occasions she got to see her father in action in a bar. When she turned six, a baby brother joined the family. She recalled how life was wonderful then and that she was so happy to evolve in such a musical environment.“Sadly a few years later, following events that I don’t want to talk about, our family was destroyed, separating us from one another.I ended up going from one foster family to another.I felt abandoned and I experienced a lot of anger and resentment,” she said.“As a teenager I had lost all this passion and love for music, I guess I could say that I had lost myself as well. One day, an educator told me about the Sherbrooke Academy of Music (drum and bugle). So that summer I played the snare and cymbals with them.It gave me back my taste for music.I did a lip-sync show at the recreation center. It is at that precise moment that my passion for music was reignited.Being onstage, the lights, but specially the music, brought the old familiar feelings back.” After that magical moment revived something she thought she had lost forever, Rogers went on to prove her courage by turning her life around. Her resilience, her positivity, her love for work well done, her tenacity and her strength would become the driving force behind her accomplishments. She decided to learn guitar and soon enough got a gig with another musician in a bar on Wellington Street. This older musician became sort of a mentor who, for a while, guided and supported her a lot.For a few years, she invested many hours honing her musical skills.“With music back in my life, I started entering talent contests,” she said.“There’s one in particular that I remember well.Jessie, you were hosting a talent show at a Restaurant called Le Retro downtown Sherbrooke. It was nice and friendly.I didn’t win that contest, I won something bigger: self-con?dence and experience.” It’s around that time that Rogers started writing songs, working all day and staying-up a good part of the night to re?ne her lyrics. In her twenties, she had the chance to play with different local musicians, taking all the gigs she could ?nd, until one day, she was asked to play The Festival Western in St-Tite.The following year she entered a songwriter contest “Le Concours Etoile Galaxie” in St-Tite.She came in second. She was getting more known, which opened the door to many other festivals, but she was also playing local bars every weekend.Sylvie Rogers has a voracious appetite for learning. She plays guitar, drums and bass and lately she started learning violin. She’s always eager to increase her musical knowledge and perfect her playing techniques.Local musician David McBurney, who plays with Rogers often, just can’t believe how it seems easy for her to learn how to play an instrument.“She is really talented and it’s unbelievable to see the ability she has at learning something new.I love to hear her perform” he told me.COURTESY CONT’D ON PAGE 10 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL mastering.I decided to record my ?rst album with Gerry Brisebois titled ‘On a Tous un Côté Cowboy’ where I got to experience the work involved in studio and on a sound board” she shared.“I have been with my signi?cant other for over twenty years now and she understands my passion for music and she always supported me and often she encourages me to go further in my venture. We are soul sisters” she stated about the person who helped her heal and believe in herself. All that support, which combined to her passion for everything music, made her want to own her studio and she did.“I am so proud of my studio. Now I can record my own stuff.I have been working on two other albums. On the ?rst one titled “Au bout du Monde” the songs are all my own compositions while the second one offers covers of my favourite songs and is titled “Album de Mes Souvenirs. The CDs are not of?cially launched but it is coming” she said with her million dollar smile.COVID really slowed down a lot of singers and musicians but not Rogers, who turned on a dime and decided to have her own music show on the Web during which she performs songs in English and in French, as well as some of her own material.“I created this Facebook “live” and titled it “I Feel Country”.I go on live every Thursday night on my Facebook page (Sylvie Sylvie) at 7:00 pm.I also sometimes invite other local musicians to perform on this hour as well.I wrote a theme, did the arrangements and conceived the promo to announce this “live” show.I love singing for people and having fun.I have so many ideas.I’m just like a kid” said the talented singer/musician.“I think that I will still be doing this when I am a hundred years old.Music is the best trade in the world and it’s de?nitely therapeutic” she concluded.COURTESY A special happy birthday wish to my grandson Gregory, who turns eight today. He often comes with me at the radio station and seems to be interested in broadcast.I am so proud to have such a sweet grandson! was welcomed by God to join Beatrice, his beloved wife of 65 years, his parents Gertrude and W.Douglas, and his brother Anthony (Barbara). His love of family will live on in the hearts of his four children Dave (Trudy), Rosemary, Malena, and Jay (Maggie). He was the proud grandfather to Bruce (Serena), Gordon (Shanna) and Rachel Lambie; Andrew (Patricia), Jonathan (Amanda), Matthew (Amanda), and Thomas (Melissa) Bromby; and Natasha & Brandon Sadowski. His gentle spirit and love protects his 10 precious great grandchildren: Beatrice & Meredith Lambie, Connor & Carter Bromby, Brock & Lexi Bromby, Blakely & Nolan Bromby, and Adelyn & Elodie Bromby. He will be fondly remembered also by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends around the world.Doug was born in London, England on April 1, 1924.The family moved to Wellington, New Zealand when he was 3 months of age.His family subsequently moved to Winnipeg and then Toronto before his father was posted to Trinidad to serve as the British Trade Commissioner. His early education included Victoria School in Westmount, QC, and Culford School in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England where Doug and Anthony went to boarding school. They were visiting their parents when WWII broke out.Doug stayed in Trinidad to ?nish his schooling before moving to Toronto to attend the Ontario College of Art, studying Design. In 1942 he joined the Canadian Army, and was then stationed in England and France, wounded in action July 17, 1944.He is a decorated war veteran awarded 6 medals for his service. After the war he joined his parents in Montreal where he lived until 1964.Doug owned a millinery store in Montreal, which he named Roderick Douglas, selling ladies hats all of which he designed.Singing in the choir at Westmount Park United Church, he met Beatrice Roland. They married there on May 31, 1952.Early in their marriage, he worked for Dupont, and Dominion Textiles. In 1964 he joined the Canadian Government and the family moved to Ottawa. His work with the Exhibition Commission took him all over the world, promoting Canada to such countries as Japan, Germany and Spain. In 1967, Doug was posted to London, England where he settled his family for 2 years. His passion for connecting with relatives from both parental sides and tracing the family tree grew rapidly as old churches and cemeteries were included in countryside outings.Following his retirement in 1984, they relocated to Stratford, Ontario and he became very involved with the Chamber of Commerce and as a volunteer guide giving backstage tours of the Festival Theater.Doug was proud of his Scottish heritage, wearing his Lamont clan tartan as shirts, ties, and his kilt which he passed on to his grandson Andrew in 2014 to wear for his wedding. For recreation he loved to ballroom and round dance with his wife Bea.They often practiced their routines at home, and if Bea was unavailable, Doug danced with his daughters. He also loved to paint in oils preferring landscapes as his images. He was always fun to play a board game with especially Monopoly and Scrabble. His other indulgences were ice cream and Jeopardy, or a game of billiards or croquet when he found willing partners. It seems he had been quite the golfer in earlier years.Doug was happiest carving the turkey at many family celebrations. He also was an avid reader when time during his busy work, travel, and family life permitted. Two or three paperbacks on the go was not unusual. He spent many hours guiding his daughters with numerous sewing projects, and when the time came, he helped his younger daughter cut out, and tackle the ?ddly work of her wedding dress. His patience for such things was quite remarkable though not surprising as many years earlier he’d designed Bea’s wedding dress (sewn by his mother), which was also worn by his eldest daughter. He and Bea enjoyed travelling throughout Canada, Mexico, Spain, and other parts of Europe after taking language lessons, and of course, tracing their roots in England and Scotland. They moved homes several times embracing the many adventures along the way.Doug’s was a happy and ful?lling life.Doug’s ?nal years were spent at Christie Gardens in Toronto. His fellow residents always saw him outside reading, waving at the passing cars and greeting visitors.Heartfelt appreciation to Christie Gardens for the loving care they provided throughout the years for Doug.He passed peacefully and not alone. The family will receive condolences at Voluntas (4695 boul.St-Jean, Dollard-des- Ormeaux, QC H9H 2A7) on May 31, 2021.Details are to be con?rmed.Donations may be made to the Stratford Festival Theatre https://www.stratfordfestival.ca/SupportUs/CommemorativeGifts, Military or Veterans through www.canadahelps.org, or a charity newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Moving somewhere new Dear Annie FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2020 Dear Annie: I have always dreamed of moving to Memphis, Tennessee, and would really like to do so.It cost so much to get a hotel there, so I know I would need to ?nd an apartment to rent pretty quickly. Can you give me some advice on what I can do as soon as I get there to get situated?I do not have a job lined up, but I would like to relocate there as soon as possible.- Dreaming of Memphis Dear Dreaming: First, save.Second, save some more. You should have enough set aside to last at least three to six months. When calculating your living expenses, take into account rent, groceries, utilities and other daily expenses such as ordering out from restaurants.Be realistic now so that you’re not sorry later. If you can safely do so, travel to Memphis ahead of time to look at apartments.Having a place lined up makes the moving process simpler and less expensive. You’ll be able to move right in, with no worries as to where to store your things, and no need to drop hundreds or thousands of dollars on staying at a hotel room inde?nitely. If you are apartment-hunting from afar, then be cautious. On websites such as Craigslist, scammers will often advertise properties that they don’t actually own, in an attempt to steal the fee for a “rental application” or security deposit. It would be safer to work with a rental agent or go through rental management companies.Start applying to jobs before you move. It’s harder to get a job in a city in which you don’t yet live, but not impossible.Let potential employers know a ?rm date by when you will be in town and able to work.Having a job will make the transition smoother ?nancially and also socially, as it gives you a chance to meet new people right off the bat.Lastly, a big asterisk to all this: I’d strongly encourage you to wait on moving until the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided.Dear Annie: I have complex PTSD from the ?rst 18 years of my life involving sexual abuse and witnessing violent abuse on my brother and mother.I have found a wonderful therapist and have quieted a lot of the guilt, shame and night terrors but I continue to have low self-esteem, anxiety and depression that I choose not to medically treat because of being 54 and not wanting to increase my chances at dementia.Because of this trauma, am I likely to get dementia because of the damage that was caused from years of abuse?- Concerned About Consequences Dear Concerned: I am so sorry for what you went through and so relieved to hear you have a therapist whom you like. You raise an important issue. The available scienti?c research does indicate that the stress of PTSD can increase one’s risk of dementia.A review published in September 2020 found that people who suffer from PTSD are up to twice as likely to develop dementia later in life. The exact reasons for this are unknown.A 2018 study noted that PTSD increases levels of cytokines (proteins that trigger immune responses), which cause in?ammation that may damage the brain. So, it’s important that you get appropriate and comprehensive mental health care.Talk to your physician and your therapist about what the best course of treatment might be.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
