Manitoba asked themselves a question that has likely occurred to many Canadians over the years: what would happen if we played crokinole, the classic cottage game of small wooden discs on an octagonal board, with curling stones?Where others have left that question in the realm of speculation the ?rm\u2019s director, Liz Wreford, explained that Public City Architecture was not satis?ed just to wonder.\u201cWe just thought, wouldn\u2019t it be fun to have it on a large scale, and combined with curling?\u201d she said explaining that it wasn\u2019t until later in the year in a meeting with representatives of the Forks market in Winnipeg that the team found the context in which to pull the idea out of their back pocket and bring it to life.\u201cThey invest a lot in unique outdoor recreation spaces and were very supportive.\u201d The result was Crokicurl; a giant version of crokinole played on an ice surface 15 metres in diameter in pairs or groups of four.The rules as drawn up by Wreford and her team take advantage of preexisting similarities between the tabletop game and the winter sport.Players, each in their own quadrant of the \u201cboard,\u201d take turns pushing their stones into the rings, looking to ricochet off of opposing stones to get into higher scoring areas, preferably the central \u201cbutton,\u201d which guarantees 20 points in a round.In its original form, Wreford said that the plan was to have the game be even larger and involve sweeping as well, but the constraints of the space available at the Forks called for adjustments that ultimately saw the game simpli?ed.\u201cWe had originally proposed it to be on the (Red) river, but the space that they had available was smaller and up on a plaza,\u201d the director said.\u201cIt actually worked very well, better even than if it had been on a larger scale.\u201d Crokicurl became very popular in Winnipeg that ?rst winter, but rather than trademark and try to capitalize on their invention, Public City Architecture offered up their plans and gameplay rules for free, meaning that in the brief time since its invention, the game has been picked up in communities all over Canada.\u201cIt\u2019s been such a great experience just to get to know people across the country,\u201d Wreford said, sharing that at this point the group has heard from so many different places that she can\u2019t keep track of them anymore.The game has been played as far north as the Yukon, and was featured as a challenge on CTV\u2019s The Amazing Race Canada, but so far has not made much of an impression in Quebec or British Colombia.\u201cWe\u2019ve found that a lot of people in certain parts of Canada have never heard of (crokinole) before,\u201d she observed.\u201cIt is really popular in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, but it starts to get iffy in Alberta and in B.C.it seems no one has ever heard of it.\u201d Still, Wreford said that the simplicity and accessibility of crokicurl, combined with people\u2019s creativity, has seen it quickly adopted in a wide range of contexts.\u201cThere have been lots of adaptations,\u201d she said, pointing out that items like the junior curling stones and metal support ring for posts included in the original design have been substituted with things like wooden posts and plastic jugs ?lled with water in situations where cost or availability stood in the way.\u201cWe found youth curling rocks to be the perfect weight, but people have been very creative,\u201c she said arguing that the game also offers a good introduction to winter sports for newcomers to Canada as it can be set up indoors or outdoors, and is faster to learn than skating or skiing with no need for personal equipment.\u201cThe good thing about the game is that no one\u2019s an expert.Everyone\u2019s at the same level and it\u2019s sort of like tobogganing in that anyone can do it.\u201d Even if it is still new to essentially everyone, Crokicurl has still spawned its ?rst competitions.\u201cWe call it the tournaspeil,\u201d Wreford said, explaining that the ?rst such event pitted local mayors in the Winnipeg area against each other.\u201cWe\u2019ve only ever come second,\u201d she added with a chuckle.A survey of local curling clubs earlier this year revealed that the idea of Crokicurl has yet to make its way into the Eastern Townships, but the rules and instructions for creating the game are available on the Public City Architecture website at www.publiccityarchitecture.com/crokicurl- rules-and-instructions.The company just asks that people who do decide to make their own game let them know so that they can continue to track the spread of their unusual creation over the years to come.Crokicurl: a couple of Canadian classics, on the rocks have to respect the ice, you have to respect our sport and you just have to plan ahead and I think a lot of people don\u2019t and that\u2019s why we have these terrible accidents,\u201d said Wisdom.The ice ?shing season is supposed to begin on Dec.20, but the water might need a little more time to freeze over.Lake Memphramagog, for example, is roughly 400 feet deep, the sheer volume of water will need more time to harden, he explained.He preaches caution because dangerous situations can happen to even the most prepared ice ?sherman.Wisdom had a close call last winter when he set up his ?shing spot near a boat house.He said the metal rods holding the house up caught sunlight and melted the ice.\u201cAs I walked closer to that foot, my one leg fell through and I was very fortunate that I didn\u2019t go right in and it was really a wake up call for me that even if it\u2019s eight inches of ice across the lake to be more aware,\u201d said Wisdom.One of his close friends and fellow club member, Bradley Rasmussen, also experienced a scary situation when he was 15 years old.He was walking out on Lake Massawippi close to his family\u2019s cottage when a pressure crack opened up and he fell into the frigid water.He survived thanks to a ?ve gallon pale he used as a ?oatation device.He was able to get his body horizontal, which allowed him to crawl back onto the ice.After that he took a parental-imposed break from ice ?shing, forcing him to re-evaluate his on-ice habits.\u201cWell at the beginning, at that point I was still living at home, so my mom wouldn\u2019t let me back on the ice, but it was such a freak incident and what changed is I look for ridges in the snow and I\u2019m more cautious now,\u201d he said.But while ice ?shing has its dangers, both Rasmussen and Wisdom are passionate about the sport.Wisdom looks for solitude, using his time on the ice to re?ect and de-compress from his day job as director general at L\u2019Éveil de Brome-Missisquoi, a mental health centre.Rasmussen, on the other hand, looks to the sport as a communal activity.The 24-year- old said it\u2019s a fun sport for any family looking to spend some quality time together.And, depending on the level of seriousness, the sport isn\u2019t going to break the bank.\u201cOne of the things I especially like about it is that it gives a lot more access Year imbued many of us with a vision of a prosperous and loving future.For most of us the pandemic has been an unmitigated disaster: people we love have died, how we work, learn and communicate has been severely hampered, daily comfortable schedules have been uprooted, ?nancial woes have been exacerbated, our mental health has suffered through unprecedented isolation, and our sense of overall security in a world we thought we could have some control over has been smashed.Those who could choose to take cruises and planes at a moment\u2019s notice have found themselves sitting at home.Even money\u2019s perceived ability to ?x any problem will not loosen the grip of this virus.A cure-all vaccine is trumpeted, but it seems that many people will refuse it, questioning its ef?cacy and the motives of governments and the pharmaceutical companies that produced it; some even speak of dark and tyrannical objectives.Fear and trepidation permeate our daily lives.At last humans are realising that we are part of Nature, which we have abused for so long.But is this reluctant and grudging acknowledgement coming too late for us?Our ever- increasing encroachment into natural habitats and refusal to respect the notion of limits to growth for humanity, characterized by global unethical capitalism run amuck, is now in the process of ruthlessly pursuing climate breakdown.Covid-19, it appears, represents one more landmark on the road to devastation that we collectively continue to encourage.Thomas Homer-Dixon\u2019s recently published book, Commanding Hope: The Power We Have to Renew a World in Peril, comes at a time when many people believe humanity is soon to be forced to its knees.But Homer-Dixon states: \u201cReal social and political change only happens in times of crisis, because crisis is needed to discredit existing systems of worldviews, institutions, and technologies, and the structures of power that sustain them.\u201d Commanding Hope is dedicated to Homer-Dixon\u2019s two young children, Ben and Kate, who are continually alluded to throughout the book, whether that be in a drawing of theirs or in dialogue between them and their father and mother.To put it succinctly, Homer-Dixon wrote this book as if his children\u2019s lives depended upon it.It took him eight years, and nothing will stop him from ?nding a non-magical \u201celixir\u201d of knowledge and informed action to save his children and ours.He begins with an account of the heroic efforts of Stephanie May, a young Connecticut woman, making phone calls in 1957 asking people to protest against atmospheric nuclear testing.In 1961 she goes on hunger strike while walking up and down in front of the Soviet Union\u2019s Manhattan UN mission, asking them to save the world\u2019s children by eliminating the tests.To her amazement the press takes notice and ultimately her efforts bear fruit.Against the odds, the powerful determination that she displays is in its essence what Homer- Dixon calls \u201ccommanding hope.\u201d And this is the same engaging hope that teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg displayed in 2018 when she sat outside the Swedish parliament with a handwritten sign.Homer-Dixon contrasts this positive renewal of the world with the Mad Max apocalyptic ?lms, where the world is drawn down to the lowest ecological and civil possibilities.But juxtaposed with that nightmare he discusses J.R.R.Tolkien\u2019s Lord of the Rings and the unlikely push by the communities of Middle-Earth to forge again lost alliances that will bring about a cessation of grotesque hostilities and a renewal and af?rmation of an alternative worldview that cherishes life and happiness.The long quest to ?nd a way to ?nally dispose of the Ring and bring about an era of peace and harmony ?nds its greatest strength in an unassailable sense of hope; it is a hope to create a better world around which Homer-Dixon weaves his book.We recall all the tribulations and faltering ambitions to create a just society in The Lord of the Rings, and Homer-Dixon reminds us that our present-day world far exceeds the dangers expressed in Tolkien\u2019s book.Humanity\u2019s struggle to stop climate chaos, an ecological catastrophe, nuclear destruction and the rise of authoritarianism constitutes an almost impossible task compared to the ascent of Mount Doom, a goal for the Fellowship of Middle-Earth that will become achievable, if immensely dif?cult.Homer-Dixon calls it a \u201csuperordinate goal\u2014one that\u2019s clear and speci?c, that everyone shares, that overrides all others, and that can\u2019t be achieved without cooperation,\u201d and he repeatedly cautions us that we might not be so fortunate but we have too much at stake not to vigorously pursue safety for our children.True, our challenges far outweigh Frodo\u2019s, but Homer-Dixon af?rms that we can push back the darkest elements of humanity and ?ourish.But how do we get there?By intensely reviewing and modifying our personal and public worldviews as well as understanding that our institutions and technologies \u201care tightly interdependent: they in?uence each other, depend on each other, and usually hang together in a cohesive way.\u201d Stereotypically a western worldview might include a commitment to personal freedom and free enterprise, while its institutions support free economic markets and a community\u2019s rules, and its technologies let us feel we\u2019re independent by, for example, driving cars.Homer- Dixon strongly recommends that we immediately set about transforming our mindsets and ultimately the \u201cmindscape\u201d of humanity to establish meaningful change that will let coming generations of sentient life succeed, but to do this we must enable our capacity to establish a bedrock of values that must never be forsaken when we investigate what is feasible in this unabashedly unsentimental quest to save the planet.Commanding hope comprises three strands.Honest hope means rigorously applying scienti?c methods and moral truths, and not thinking ourselves into a spiral of fantasy about what is possible.Astute hope recognizes the need to understand diverse peoples\u2019 worldviews and aspirations.Powerful hope motivates us to work together, as agents with a \u201ccompelling common purpose,\u201d to solve our problems.Furthermore, we must diligently and deeply understand what is enough and combine it with what is feasible in our quest for a renewal of a world in peril.Feasible is no longer what the corporation, business-as-usual elite will chance, but rather it is tempered with imagination that fuses it to an enough that has solid principles of justice that include all of us; choosing what part of civilization is to be saved over another in a crisis is not an acceptable response, even in desperate times, Homer- Dixon warns us.We do not, however, give up on what has inherent value but is not immediately important, because we then lose the core of an authentic future.At the same time, honest hope prevents a turn towards unsubstantiated, unscienti?c decision making.Commanding hope creates the pathways we vitally need for this new world of equality and respect for Nature; it is gritty and resolved in its determination.Sometimes an individual can instantly ?ip their worldview.At the age of 20, while hitchhiking abroad, I stopped to buy a drink of milk from a vendor.He poured the milk from an already opened carton.When I said I wanted it from a sealed carton, he furiously refused, saying how sel?sh and entitled North Americans were.I felt ashamed and realized he spoke the truth.That two-minute conversation changed my worldview with regard to wealth, food scarcity and inequality.Unfortunately, groups and nations modify their worldviews far more slowly than an individual can, and that change comes for the most part incrementally.\u201cOur worldviews connect us with our communities, stabilize our sense of who we are as individuals and groups through time, anchor our visions of a desirable and hopeful future.so we\u2019re terri?ed when they\u2019re renewing the future.Through learning about universal human temperaments, asking what Homer-Dixon calls \u201cbinding questions\u201d, conducting thought experiments whereby we put ourselves into an opponent\u2019s worldview, new cognitive-affective tools, and supporting our world values, humanity can forge positive worldviews that embrace a world-inclusive identity that makes perfect sense, as our greatest concerns are global in nature.Cultural identities are not sacri?ced by doing so.Social order, fairness, opportunity and identity remain at the core of our worldviews and commitments.Climate breakdown will challenge all of us and our worldviews, but how we respond to the possible chaos will determine our success in preventing the worse outcomes.Worldviews that \u201chelp us surmount fear by inspiring rather than extinguishing the hope that motivates our agency\u201d have a great chance of ?ourishing.Alternative worldviews and not rehashed older ones help us forge a better tomorrow.Worldviews that recognize human temperaments such as empathy, prudence and exuberance as well as commitments to opportunity, safety and justice and a shared global identity preserve not just a space \u201cfor some form of democracy\u201d, but for all life too! Homer-Dixon speaks of an \u201cimmortality project.that gives people and groups around the world broad possibilities to imagine, tell, and weave together their own hero stories\u2014and to live them together\u2014as we move towards a shared vision of the future.\u201d Commanding hope becomes the emotional and rational energy and agency humanity must maintain to steadfastly leap through the inevitable dangers ahead of us.Homer-Dixon believes this \u201cjump\u201d is feasible and, he maintains, enough if we succeed in the transformation of our institutions, particularly our carbon-based energy system and our model of economic growth.This must be our aim in moving towards a sustainable and equitable future.Please listen to the CBC Ideas interview with Thomas Homer-Dixon: tinyurl.com/cbc-homer-dixon Thomas Homer-Dixon\u2019s book Commanding Hope is available at the Lennoxville library.Commanding Hope Today\u2019s article marks one year since I started writing monthly pizza related articles.I thought that I would take this time to share with you why I am doing this and what fascinates me about pizza.I have been a pizza lover all my life.Ordering pizza with family and friends was always an anticipated treat.When my favourite pizzeria closed in 2004, I started my journey to pizza perfection.At ?rst, I did not want to work with yeast, thinking that it would take too long to make the dough, and always in a hurry to make supper, I tried all sorts of recipes with baking soda and baking powder and found that the texture and ?avour just did not satisfy.Begrudgingly, I started working with yeast and found ways to speed up the process and the ?avour was unbelievable.My family and friends would rave about my pizza and would tell me that I should open a restaurant, but that seemed too far out of reach for a graphic designer with no experience in the restaurant business.I worked full-time as a graphic designer, was involved in the community food bank and always had the idea to do something with my pizza in the back of my mind.In September 2018, I had the idea of turning my pizza dough into a premix.I was used to making pizza from scratch and this pre-mix was easier to make, time saving and did not compromise on the ?avour that I loved so much.I started by testing it out on family and friends and soon everyone I knew was making delicious homemade pizza.I got so much satisfaction out of hearing their testimonies and receiving photos of their pizza creations that I was encouraged to sell it to a wider audience.I am often amazed at people\u2019s creativity using my pizza dough mix.Heidi sent me a photo of her cinnamon buns, I didn\u2019t even think that was a possibility, Hudson sent me a photo of his Focaccia, until then, I didn\u2019t even know what that was, and Cathy sent a photo of her deep-dish Chicago pizza, which was totally amazing.Over the last few years, I\u2019ve been doing so much experimenting with sauces and toppings, ingredients and everything pizza because I think that pizza is an amazing food that is so much more than just pepperoni and cheese.I don\u2019t want to give you the impression that this is my only food choice, I have many other favourites, however, there is a special place in my heart for the pie.This year, I lost thirty pounds and I intend to keep them off, so I have had to become creative when it comes to pizza.I\u2019ve been making smaller, weighed out dough portions and choosing my toppings so that I consider the caloric count.Over the past two years I\u2019ve been quite busy promoting my pizza dough mix.I spent two months, every Saturday in 2019, giving demonstrations at the local grocery stores and the Lennoxville street festival.I have hosted numerous pizza parties from ten to 30 people, and this past summer, I met so many of you at the Lennoxville farmer\u2019s market and the Cookshire marché de Noël.It was a great pleasure to hear that you enjoy my column.Thank you for your encouragement.I\u2019m always looking to be creative and innovative when it comes to my pizza and my product.You know when you ?nd a good thing, you want to share it, and this is the case here.Over the past two years I\u2019ve learned so much.The road has not been easy and there have been so many unforeseen obstacles.So, where from here?Well, I continue to offer my product on my website and advertise it on my Facebook and Instagram pages.I always look forward to hearing from you, seeing your photos and answering your questions.Keep them coming! December 24, 2020 TALK Jessie Pelletier Country Connection When you grow up surrounded by music and musicians, the chances are high that it could inspire you to become a musician.That\u2019s what happened to Mannix St- Amant, a well-known artist in The Townships.He is an undeniable talent.He has most likely collaborated with more musicians and played in more bands than we can count.His love of music is infectious and inspiring to anyone who crosses his path.Born in the Townships, St-Amant has at one point or another lived in Knowlton, Mansonville or Cowansville.Knowlton is where he resides now, but his musical career takes him wherever he needs to be on stage.He grew up with his mother Marjolaine St-Amant, his grandparents Jean-Paul and Alberta, as well as his aunt Pauline.His father Michael Eldridge is proud of his talented son too.If he looks back at his childhood, music to him meant listening to his mother singing accompanied by his aunt on the piano.\u201cMy grandfather would dance and play harmonica to entertain me.I was allowed to play with any musical instruments that were around.My neighbors, the Codere family, were also very musical and they added to what I already knew,\u201d said St-Amant in an interview.\u201cBut when my mom and step-dad got together, I was welcomed to the Jacobs family and this is where and when my love and quest for music really started.Watching Ernest Jacobs (grandfather) and Brian Jacobs (uncle) play music and play with all-stars band was the spark I needed for music to take over,\u201d he recalled.As a kid he was permitted to sit and watch amazing shows at legions and fairs.Ernest Jacobs played all over Canada and parts of Unites States and was featured on many Country TV shows.Brian Jacobs took his music even further, he went to Nashville and played for Ricky Skaggs.The career of these two musicians fueled the young man\u2019s yearning to follow in their footsteps and ?lled his head with musical dreams.Both of them were an inspiration for young St-Amant.\u201cWhile still in elementary school, I decided to form a band with some neighbors: Grant Streeter, Keith Paige and Troy Jacobs.We didn\u2019t know how to play but we learned together.Our ?rst gig at Knowlton Academy was for a Youth Group Weekend.We played ?ve songs, I believe, we played them all twice.We did well, at least that\u2019s what we were told,\u201d he said, remembering his debut.High School would accelerate the process of becoming an entertainer.He met many other boys who also wanted to become musicians.This is where he met the Brunton brothers.They would hang together and teach each other what they knew, a great way to increase their knowledge.These exchanges would prove to be bene?cial for everyone.As a high school student, the young man played with many bands.The ?rst one was The Echomen with Grant Streeter and Paul Giddings.St-Amant has fond memories of many of the guys he played with at that time, such as the band ASD comprised of Garth Allen, Nadim Hashim, Mike Lechasseur and Steven Morris.He kept performing all the time, every chance he got honing his skills and playing any musical genre; Country, Blues, Rock were all part of his repertoire.\u201cLow Rider was a classic rock band, we played everywhere that would have us, between Montreal and Sherbrooke.We played for a decade, Eugene Brotto sang, Joey Shannahan (the best Keyboard player I have played with or seen) plus Amos J would come sing while Steve Norris, Paul Giddings, Stephen McMahon and Ross Clarkson rounded out the lineup,\u201d he said.There was also the band Broken Arrow with Steven Norris, Isabelle Racine and Steve Nelson, Robb and \u201cI love to jam with them all\u201d CONT\u2019D ON PAGE 6 COURTESY PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 6 December 18 -
