[" ; ; - * 4 x = WAITE PLEADS GUILTY.| - Judge will pronounce sentence to- | .made x .° a Is brush, now in the homes of \u2014 Would find \u2014 1 Y, OCTOBER 19.1897.Also -Told Where the Stolen He Goods Were-Hidden.Fred Waite was arraigned before District Magistrate Miilvena yesterday afternooun, for breaking into and robbing J .L.Vineberg & Co's store on Wednesday night last.Waite pleaded guilty to the charge and asked that sentence pronounced upon him.The - morrow.\\ al : \u201cOn Saturday afternoon, High Constable Moe: saw Waite in the jail and he confessed to the robbery and gave directions for the \u201c recovery OË the goods.He said the jewelry was hidden in a tom- atocan under the fence in the rear of J.F.Morkill\u2019s - house, on Commercial street, and that the clothes were -under a summer house in the rear of Geo.Brooks\u2019 residence, on Brompton road.The high constable at once proceeded to these places.He was unable to find the jewelry, but under the summer house he got two overcoats and three suits.In the evening he, with Chief Davidson, further search.and \u2018found a few handkerchiefs and gloves, but did not get the.jewelry.Mr.Vine- berg continued the search Sunday, but was unsuccessful.Yes- \u2018terday afternoon, at the conclusion of the proceedings before the district magistrate, Waite consented to accompany the high - constable to the -places -where he said the goods and jewelry were secreted.- As a result of this last visit, Mr.Vineberg had restored to his store, 20 rings, 18 charms, 3 chains, 1 watch, 3 suits, 2 overcoats, besides a number of handkerchiefs and gloves.The coon coat as well as a quantity of jew- | ~ elry and clothing has not yet been recovered.C PROPOSED NEW - ENGLISH CHURCH.It will be Erected by the Year 1900, and will Cost $30,000.On the occasion of the recent | \u201c Visit of-Bishop Dunn to this city, the building committee of .St.Peter's church, and others - interested in the matter, met His Lordship and Rev.Dr.Dumbell, rector of the parish, to discuss the question of the proposed new English church in Sherbrooke.The Bishop of Quebec announced that during ~ his recent visit to England the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel had voted the sum of $5,000 towards the new edifice, subject - to the condition that the church be completed by January 1900.The new church is to cost $30,000, and wich the $5,000 voted by the S.P.G., more than half this amount has already been subscribed.Thosé who have the matter in | hand feel confident that the balance of the funds will be supplied| and the Church erected by the birth of the new century, and the new edifice will doubtless be worthy of the important position which this parish holds in the dio- \u201c cese of Quebec.\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014e\u2014 \\ ART NOTES.Mr.Geo.Chavignaud held a little exhibition of his paintings at the Art Hall, in this city, on Saturday, Oct.\"16th.Two of his paintings were selected and purchased, to be placed in the Art Hall, among the paintings already there from the brush of Canadian and foreign artists.)
