operation. The cars, thus far, have certainly not lacked patronage.A passenger ‘ona Broadway street car once said, “I have never offered a lady a seat in à street car.” After being reproached for his lack of courtesy, he replied, ‘I have never had a seat to offer.” Although, no patron of the Sherbrooke cars may.speak as the Broadway man did, yet many cars loaded to their full capacity have passed over the Lennoxville line during the .time in which it has been in operation. It does not seem improbable that the belt line, which will be opened tomorrow, will be equally well patronized._It is just about two years ago since the idea of trolley line for Sherbrooke was first originat- are only today beginning to realize its practicability. The company, which was first formed in this city and which obtained the charter for the construction of the road, was composed of the following gentlemen: Messrs, Wm.Farwell, Dalby Morkill, Wm.Morris, Frank Thompson, J.S.Mitchell, F.P.Buck, R.H.Pope, Alex.Ames and- W.Blue.Soon after the formation of the company, notice was given that application ‘would be made to the Dominion Parliament for a charter, but.the notice was too late, and the charter was received from the local Legislature in the spring of 1896.This, however, in itself was only a preliminary step towards the construction of the electric road.:.The capitalists who: builtit had not, at the time of the first company’s frrmation, in the matter, and the procuring of the charter was by no means an assurance that the_road would be built.Mr.Burke, president of the present company, was, during the winter of 1895, occupied as chief engineer in the construction of the water works system at Newport, Vt.He happened to be in Sherbrooke during the winter on business, and met Mr.Fred Griffith, director and secretary-treasurer of the present company, who brought the _ electric road scheme to his attention.Mr.Burke, who represented the capitalists, Messrs.Clements and arding, was interested and went away ‘with the understanding that Mr.‘Griffith should obtain an option on the company’s charter. This was done and the new company was formed early in the spring of '06, composed of Messrs.J.W.Burke, F.J.Griffith, Wm.Morris and J.E.Flood, The charter obtained by the first company was purchased on April 16, ‘96.The city granted the company its | franchise on April 22, °96, and the scheme for the construction of Sherbrooke Street Railway was fairly launched, and has since been carried through to a:successful issue.Undoubtedly the first credit of interesting the capitalists who constructed the road, is due to Mr.Fred Griffith, who, during the winter of ’96, conducted the negotiations in Sherbrooke with the company, which resulted in the purchase of the charter by a company which meant business, and pushed the scheme ‘through, until now Sherbrooke’s trolley is in successful operation.DIXVILLE.Nov.17.—Quite a number of attempts have been made to organ- izea lodge of Foresters in this place, but they have been unsuccessful until now.For some days past Mr.Stewart, a + On Monday, the 8th instant, the foreman, - Mr.Ned Irwin, gave orders that owing to a-rush of work they must work overtime until 7.30 each evening. The weavers did so during that week expecting that the extra work was for the one week only.On ‘Monday of this week, learning that the overtime would be continued indefinitely, the weavers on the first floor refused, and left their work at the usual hours 6.15 p.- m.Yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, Jos.Thibeault, who was looked upon as a leader by the foreman.having finished his web of cloth was given t6 understand his services were no longer required. At noon when the other ‘employes learned :of the .trouble, they refused to return to their work, and at their, meeting passed resolutions to the effect that Jos.Thibeault and wife be reinstated in their positions; that the working hours be not longer than 6.15 p.m., as there are many women and girls who‘ cannot stand the additional work ; and that the foreman, Mr.Irwin, who they understood, was to ‘ be discharged, be continued in his present position.A committee of two were appointed to engage Mr.L.C.Belanger, Q.C., to look after their interests.A representative of the RECORD called at the office of the Paton Mfg.Co., this morning, and saw Mr.Paton and Mr Hope. They said that the cold-weather coming on has brought in a large number of orders requiring immediate shipment, and some given on condition that shipment is made by certain date. This required over time work by the weavers, who piece work.On Monday, Nov.&, notice was given to work until 7.30 each evening, till further orders. There was no trouble until Monday of this week, when Jos.Thilbeault, who worked on the first floor, was seen to be running from loom- to loom, and shortly after the employes of that floor refused to work overtime. The management could not understand the reason - for this, asa year ago the employes were working three-quarter -time only, and eing in a position to give additional work it was refus- The trouble was among those only whom Jos.Thibeault came in direct contact with, therefore it was decided to discharge him.His wife was not discharged, and no fault found with her. There has been no reason far discharging Mr.Irwin, as intimated by the strikes at their meeting._ “This morning sev eral of the dissatisfied ones returned to their work, and the trouble-is expected to be over before the day is out.The unjustifiable action of the strikers is shown by the fact that they are not sustained by other | employes of the mill.Mr.Paton does not expect orders will require the extra work for more than two or three weeks.GUN CLUB TOURNAMENT.“ An interesting meeting of the gun club was held last night, at which it was detided to hold.a ‘tournament, open only to the Eastern Townships, on Thanks- iving Day, Thursday, Nov.25th.rogrammes will be prepared at once and sent to neighboring | clubs. The question of inviting the Interstate Association to hold a tournament here next summer was freely discussed and met with general favor. The association is composed of the largest manufacturers and dealers of the United States, who give a series of shoots throughout the country each summer, paying all expenses and sending representatives and expert shots, to introdu:e their goods and exhibit their own skill.Their aim is primarily to stimulate the interest in trap shooting, and indirectly to sell goods The members who attended the Interstate shoot at Montpelier, last August, feel sure that the Canadians will be glad of ‘an opportunity of seeing the champions of America at the traps, and of ual competition with’ them.As the comimercial representatives of the gun and ammunition makers, | they are the pleasantest people possible to know. The club will meet again Wednesday evening, next, for further discussion of the matter.“TT | WHEAT MARKET."Mr.W.D.Simpson, Griffith's block, reports the following prices in wheat today, by private wire from Chicago.: Dec.wheat opened 95¢, highest 96c lowest 94 3-4, at noon 94 7-8, May wheat opened 90 1-2, highest 911-2, lowest 90 1-4, at 12 o'clock, H 1-4.To Dec.Pork opened $7.30, lowest = $7.27, at 12 o’clock,$7.35.PATON MILL arrested at Mag number about 9, equally divided | ‘on two floors, and are paid by comparing their own work in act-| MAGISTRATES COURT.Vagrants Fined— A Young Thief.Four men, giving their names as follows: Geo.Boaltcher, late of Toronto, Richard Troy, of St.John, James Bevins, of Kingston, and Albert Johnston, of Colling- wood, were Yesterday afternoon, condemned to pay a fine of $1 and costs or two weeks in gaol, under a charge of vagrancy. They were f' olice there, and brought to Sherbrooke. It seems they had been ordered to leave the town and were afterwards found in Mr.-Audet’s barn, making a fire in the fire box of an old disused engine.A young boy, 11 years of age, named rles Cote, was also before Judge Mulvena, and pleaded uilty to a charge of having stolen $8 from 8./C.Nutter’s team.It appears that he rode down to the G.T.R.station with Mr.Nutter’s team and the teamster went into the station, leaving his freight book on the seat with a cheque for- $24 and $8 in money inside the book. When he returned the boy was just disappearing and the money was gone.$6.50 has been recovered. He will in all probability be sent to the.reformatory, but some papers have to be drawn up yet.~ CONCERT AT BISHOP'S COLLEG 2.We understand that a Thanksgiving concert will be given under the auspices of the Bishop’s College Mission, of which Canon Adams is the director, on Friday, Nov.26, at 8 o’clock p.m.The concert will be held in the Bishop Williams Hall, and the management have had the | good fortune to secure the favdrite soprano, Miss Hollinshead, of, Montreal, as the-leading artiste.Local talent will also be forthcoming in the sha e of glees, solos, &c.e moderate oral par of 25c.will be charged for all parts of the all.LL As the electric railway is now open, it is hoped thata large number of Sherbrooke friends will avail themselves of the .opportunity of hearing such a favorite as Miss Hollinshead.: Mr.P.R.Neill, travelling passenger agent of the Quebec Central Railway, isin town.Prof.Belfontaine is confined to his house by illness.| !
