Feb.20.—Mr.Giard (Compton) moved in the Legislature -yes- terday for all documents in connection with the death of Clarence Drake, .of Compton, which -occurred on the 29th December, in 1906.In pressing the motion, Mr, Giard spoke at length, giving the details of the rather mysterious death of Drake while on his way home in December last.No inquest had been held on the remains and the-family and principal residents of the place had requested the Attor- ney-General’s Department to act in the matter and hold an inquest.LIQUOR TO BLAME.Hon.Mr.Gouin replied that he was in possession of all the correspondence in the matter and produced the same before the Housé upon receipt of the first letter asking that an inquest be held. The department nad written ‘to Dr.Bachand, coroner of that place, inclosing a copy of the letter received by the department. The coroner replied that ‘after investigation, and five wit- nessos examined, and after the examination of the body by Dr.De Belle- feuille, (he had concluded that an inquest was not necessarily, particularly so as the bodydbore no marks of violence. The Premier added that, according to some of the correspondence, it would appear that liquor was again at the bottom of the affair. However, Dr.Bachand had written asking what he should do, and he was informed by letter to-day that the Government was satisfied with what had been done.CORONERS’ INQUESTS.Mr.Tellier remarked that it was no reason because a man died of liquor that an inquest should.not be held. The present case was not the anly one on record, and the trouble was due to the organization of coroners. The law as it now stands did not give satisfaction, and the coroners were not sufficiently remunerated.= A ease like - the present one should be thoroughly investigated, so as to place the responsibility on the proper shoulders.Naturally the coroners cannot be expected to dishurse moneyes in investigating cases if they were not certain ta be reimbursed. In the interest of society inquests should be held in all similar cases, The coroners’ law as it stood did not give satisfaction, but he wun- (EXHIBITION GRANT A large delegation of admitted in evidence yesterday, The will was read by Mr.Delmas, In his will Thaw provided ‘‘that his executors shouid- set apart ine sum of $50,000 for the investigation of his death, in case of a violent or suspic- dous end, and for the prosecution of the persons suspected of having had a hand in his taking off.Thaw left to a lawyer in Pittsburg the sum of $7,500 to- be used to obtain legal redress from Stanford White and one other person, whose name was not allowed to.be read, for the benefit of four young women, who Thaw declar- | ed were the victims of ‘degrading as- T.A.A., spoke in support of the application. He said ihe contribution asked for might seem large.‘It must be remembered, however, that this was to be a Dominion Exhibition. It was important to the city that is should be a success. They wanted the people who would come to depart with the idea that Sherbrooke is up-to-date.He believed the 85,000 would be well spent. The Association was not asking more than it really needed. The exhibition had been run 22 years and hé and the benefit looked large but it must be remember- cd it was donated for certain specified purposes, such as the equalization of freight rates, incrcased prizes, educational features, increased cost of maintenance, etc.It was not available to any great extent for building purposes. The Association estimated that‘its total expenditure this year would amount to $105,000.Of this amount it estimated an expenditure of $35,000 on buildings and $25,000 on prizes.i The ‘estimated income included -850,- 000 from the Dominion Government ; $10,000 had been nsked of the Provincial Government and 35,000 of the city.- The average gate and grand stand receipts for the past few years had been $22,000.If all this is available it would only make a total of ai figure on miuch | larger gate roceipts i order to ch The Mayor remarked that the 8$10,- 000 request from the Quebec Government seemed a very modest Council to tuke up the question of regulating the hotel, cub and carter charges during exhibition time. There had been many complaints ih the past of over charges. The Council, which had the granting of licenses, had the power to control this matter and take steps.to protect visitors against exhorbitant charges.\\ Councillor Denault said he would favor some action in this connection.Councillor | MeManam dhaug t a slightly higher rate might be allowed but exhorbitant charges should be prevented. It was not right to charge a man a dollar to convey him to the exhibition gate.It was not right to charge a man an cxhorbitant price fer a cot in a ball way.Councillor Dehault knew of an instance where four people had been conveyed from the Exhibition gate to the G.T.R.station and charged $2, and when they wanted to proceed to the top of King Hill an additional amount of 82 was demanded.: The Mayor thought that in the interests of the good name of the city, it was important this should be taken up.It was more important regarding hotels than cabmen.‘I'he hotels should announce their rates and they should be published, = Councillor Brault said the carters and cabmen had a tarif.Me could not sce why they should be allowed to charge more.He thought the hotel- kedpers should find it to their own advantage to be moderate. They derived the greatest benefit.; One speaker remarked that in his opinion the action of the hotelkgepers, in the matter of charges had diminished the Exhibition gate receipts by 25 per cent.during the past number of years, : Councillor McCrea remarked that a man would spend 850 of his own fred will and would not mind it but he would deeply resent being done out of one dollar. He thought the majority of hotels would be willing to specify rates.Sherbrooke
