Jo huilding, scattering timbers *.lons, and almost: instantly nt.out over the whole struc- \\ wenty-one men MR de building, were employed REPORTS ; FROM SCENE : Maine railroads, and-was occupied by trains to make a detour by way Jiam Kruger, burned about face Explosion in Grain Elevator Yesterday Afternoon\u2014 \u2014 Monetary Loss $400,000 of the Disaster.\u2014 Story The elevator was owned jointly by the Canadian Pacific and Boston & the Quaker Oats Company, -of Chica- vo.It was 150 feet in height, 130 feet long and 90 feet wide.The exact amount of grain which it contained could not be learned last night, but it is known that the quantity was very large.It has a \u2018capacity of 500,000 bushels.: FLAMES DEVELOPED.i So quickly did the flames, which are supposed to haye started by spontan- eous-combusion in the dry dust of the grain, extend throughout the building that the limited fire appdratus of the village was- of no avail, Nothing could be done to prevent the entire destruction of the elevator and its valuable contents.The heat set fire to a flour: shed near the elevator, and the shed, together with seventy-five freight cars, which were standing near it, were burned.Every building in the village was shaken as if by an earthquake when the explosion occurred, .and many people who were on the streets near the elevator were thrown to the ground with considerable violence.Late last night the\u2019 fire was still burning, but no other property was threatened, The wreckage from explosion and fire blocked the tracks of the Canadian Pacific.for many hours, so that it was gecessary for of \u2018Sherbrooke, Que.The total loss is estimated at $400,000.ANOTHER AT BUFFALO.Buffalo, N.Y.,.October 8.\u2014One fire: man was killed -and \u2018eight were injured in the collapse of the burning walls of a small grain elevator on Broadway near the New York Central belt line last night.The elevator and a flour and feed mill owned by A.Nowak & Son were destroyed, causing a loss of about $100,000.The dead : * Joseph Schellhamer, a -fireman.Thé injured: Capt.Fred.Durrenberger, burned and crushed, condition serious; MR.FISHER AT BEDFORD.Hon.Mr.Fisher, speaking at DBed- ford, Tuesday, said : \u201cI tell you frankly,\u201d in reference to the Government majority which in the last House had been \u2018\u2018unwieldly,\u201d \u2018that while I do not want to lose one of our friends, I would rather see the majority decreased than increased.I think it would be better for the soun- try and if we come back with a majority of forty I shall be satisfied.\u201d He predicted that the.Liberals would get about 13 seats in New Brunswick, and hold +heis own 39 in Un- tario.\u2018 Continuing, Mr.Fisher.said : \u201cIn the old days the Tory slogan was : \u2018More protection and a home market.\u201d By ils wise policy the Government had created a home market that the Conservative party had never lreamed of\u2014and they had always been clever with their imaginings.From 1901 there had been an increase in manufacturing industries in the country of about one-third, and the number of employees had increased in the same period by 45,000.That was an answer to the Conservative claim that the tariff policy of the Government was destroying home manufactures.\u201cTurning to-a statement which \u2018appeared in the Montreal Gazette recently with regard to the administration of the Department of -Agriculture, Mr.Fisher said that the article\u2018in question was only a repétition of the old the Government was wearing stolen clothes.But even if such were the case\u2014and he'did not admit it for a moment\u2014was it not.better for the country that the Government should wear them if they could wear them so much better than those who were said to \u2018be their .owners.The stock argument of the Gazette was that the present Government did not start the present system of cold stor- 1t was true that Professor Robertson had by dint of hard work, in the last year of the late administration, got the then Minister of Agricul ture to grant something towards the establishment of a system of cold storage.But the system he established was not successful, Tt was not a mechanical system like the one now in use, and the ice melted before the boats could reach the other side of the water, thus landing the produce in very, poor condition.As a matter of fact the result of that experiment was that 200,000 pounds of butter = were bought in Canada at-twenty cents per pound and sold in England at fourteen cents per pound, so poor was 1ts state.\u2018When the present administration went into power, the trade of Canada in butter was falling.In the ten years previous to the Liberal advent $8,000,000 wouth' of butter was exported, while in the ten years still before that decade $22,000,000 worth was exported.The exports were going (Continued on pave B.)
