Winnipeg and Calgary, and conditions arè such that traffic would’ warrant the undertaking.1 From Calgary to the coast the company already has what practically amounts to a double track on the ‘main line via the Kicking Horse Pass and in the Crow’s Nest line, During the past year the company has spent no less than $39,851 in surveys of projected new lines, one of which is believed to be towards the Peace River. In addition to this new double-tracking scheme, therefore, it is possible that the rumored extension northwards from Edmonton into the Peace River district will soon become brothers, and Mrs.J.Mudgett, of Bethlehem, N.H., sister. The ‘bereaved have the sympathy of the entire.çom- munity.—- Le 7 ST.ANDREW'S CHURCH (PRESBYTERIAN) Rev.C.W.NICOL, Minister The losses to the cattlemen in the Western States rom larkspur poisoning every year have been so serious that the Government is making a Vigorous effort to tind an antidote for tue poison as well as to eradicute the plant itself. In the Gunnison National Norest, Colorado, tne losses to the slockmen last season “from.larkspur were conservatively .estimated to equal almost tive per cent of the total number of cattle grazed upon that forest.lts effects are almost im- -mediate.Death follows the eating of the plant within a few hours. For this reason remedies are of little avail, because the animals are generally dead: before they are discovered.Experts.from the bureau of plant industry, in cooperation with the forest service, have made careful and painstaking investigations in the field with a view to lessening the losses as far as possible, while several different plans have been tried in hopes of completely destroying the plant.Larkspur grows very luxuriantly in the early spring. On the Gunnison forest in June, 1908, the forest officers counted more than 1300 plants in blossom upon a single square rod. The, plant seems to De more poisonous in hot, damp weather than in dry seasons, and it has heen observed that when the ground is hard and dry, so that in eating it the stems break off, = leaving ‘the roots in the ground, it is not so deadly in its effects.Since certain areas are well-known to be badly infested with larkspur, the stockmen have been in the habit of herding their cattle from such places. As far as possible these areas will be fenced by the forest service. On other areas where it is not so plentiful the blants will be dug out by the forest rangers, and also mowed off to prevent seeding again, lt has also been found that the plant will uot hold its own ‘against certain kinds of grasses, such as timothy.A few acres sowed to timothy are being carefully watched, and it is believed that it is crowding the larkspur out.It seems.probable that by sowing timothy on the mountain meadows the larkspur could be gradually smothered and replaced by a valuable forgage plant. If the plan is supported by good evidence this season timothy will be extensively sowed later on.Meanwhile upon this, as well as several other national forests where the _losses front this -blant are very serious, the building of fenees to keep the cattle off the most dangerous areas, is being pushed By the forest service, and will be continued as fast as funds are available for the purpose.: .J.C.Thomas - of Crawford, Col, made an experiment in feeding larkspur some years ago to determine if possible just what part of the plant contained the poisonous properties.A yearling steer was—fed a large quantity of the leaves with no .injurious results.A' few days later the.same animal was fed a quantity - of the roots and within ten hours.it was dead, thus justifying the suspicion that the polsonous matter was contained in the roots.+ WORLD-WIDE WARFARE ON PROHIBITION.CONGRESS OF BREWERS IN SESSION IN BERLIN.Berlin, Oct.13.—World-wide warfar: on the prohibition movement sas launched yesterday when the In!er.utional Jubilee Congress of the Brewc.olleg.and Institute for Experimenta.s.searc., convened in Berlin yesterday.Brewing experts from the whole world are in attendance, and scores of distinguished physicians and © scientists will present papers tending to prove that the mo: derate use of beer preserves the health and is a positive good, instead of being responsible for the evils attributed to its use by the prohibitionists.‘The most complete exposition of bsewéry machinery, processes and products ever shown was opened yesterday in connection witii.the congress.- : The German Government has given congress .its official patronage by permitting its diplomatic representatives abroad to extend: invitations to.foreign participants.: One of the principal features will be an international jury to award prizes on international exhibits of barley and hops.Dr.R.Wahl, of Chicago, represents the United States.Dhe exhibition of brewing machinery consists to a large extent of American products, and several great American breweries.have entered prize horses in the brewery horse-show.The scientific aspect of brewing will be gone into with characteristic Teutonic thoroughness.— The, programme calls for the reading of an immense number of papers.’ President A.\\Schalkof, of the New York scientific station for pure products and Professor Struve, of the Prussian Institute for "the Fermentation Industries,y will lead the discussion on ‘How can an international agreement become to’ for combating the exaggerations of the total abstinence party 2° Dr.P.Martens, of New York, will aMo read a paper.‘ : : me rte FINANCES OF CANADA.TOTAL, REVENUES SHOWS DR CREASE OF $9,307,310 WHILIS EXPENDITURE HAS GREATLY INCREASED.! TOWNSHIPS.‘The Construction of Mare Silos - is Urged.INTERESTING LETTER ON THE SUBJECT BY MR.A.A.AYER.Editor Daily Record : - Dear Sfr :— °° It seems to me :that the farmers of this Province should wake up to the necessity of making a larger quantity of butter and cheese per cow than they are now doing. The -average cow in this Province hardiy pays for her Keeping, and the cows below the average shoud all be killed offi ang a better class that will give milk be provided to hil tne place.1f we are to encourage our sons to remain.on €ne soil, their farming must be done on a better, and, I may say, a more intelligent scale, than is seen in most places.Te 1 hope I shall not be presuming too much if I venture to make a few suggestions that, in my opinion, will be of general benefit. It it had not been for the unusual large amount of corn grown throughout Ontario and in many parts of the Province of Quebec this year, the diminution in the quantity of butter and cheese made during the month of Sep- teruber and thus far in October, would have been very much greater. This, however, was .not due so much to the larger acreage as to the weather being specially suitable for the growing of corn.- 10 MURE SILOS SHOULD BE BUILT.The present dought has been another reminder of the fact “that our dairy farmers should provide amply in ad- 4 vance for all the needs of their stock, and that the abundance of one year should be made to provide for the ‘shortage of another year.I know of no way of doing this, 30 well as by the use of the silo.It is the only means we have for keeping forgage in a good condition from year to year.Silage is equally good for all kinds of cattle, but especially for milk-making purposes. It J is said shat more than half of the substance of the corn crop is in the stalk and leaves. This summer, in which the drought has been severe over all the land we find that the corn crop haB stood the cases a very large crop.Corn roots go down three feet or more in orainary soil, and, when the corn plarit has obtained _ à good start, it takes a Very heavy drought to injure it much.un fact, if corn for silage is being raiseu.pit will generally beat the drought as it has done this year. The farmers who this year have abundance of silo room, are happy because they have a big supply of feed for their cattle, for both this fall and winter, and some of them have enough to last them through all next summer. Why so many of our farmers continue to raise the old fashioned eight-rowed small-eared corn (usually called field corn), yielding about five tons to tne acre, is more than I can imagine.I have found the greatest success in planting the “White Cap Yellow Dent’’ variety.I raised three fields, of ‘about five acres each, this year, each :field of a different kind of soil and ;I' secured about 250 tons of feed.Man f the ears had by actual count over kernels each. The seed should be ‘grown in Essex County Ontario, or from just south of Lake Erie ; it will ripen about ten ‘days earlier than, the ordinary southern Dent corn.I bought mine! from ‘William Ewing & Co.’ Montreal: Co The profit of a dairy farm in these | strenuous days must be brought about by securing’ a larger amount of milk from the cows. One reason why the cows in the Province of Quebec do not give as much milk as those in Ontario sis, because our pastures are not as good and - we do not give the cow sufficient feed.Few farmers can afford to buy corn, bran, &c., to feed the cows with | at present prices. We shall never get the price of these coarse feeds down until each farmer raises, as ‘soon as possible, all the coarse feed he needs for his own cattle. This camnot be done in any way so cheap as in the raising of corn. The cost of a silo will repay itself in two years, so if any farmer has not the ready money, it would pay him to borrow."The model way of feeding a dairy of, say, thirty cows, is to have three round silos 12 x 30—one for feeding in the autumn and early winter, one for early drought of summer. You will note from the above that, in’ my ,opinign, the greatest necessitv, in order to increase the efficiency of our dairies.and to secure a larger supply of milk, is to feed better. As a general rule, I think I am safe in saying that | the young cows with their first calves,” are not fed and nursed sufficiently. If the feeding was done in such a way as to bring forth the largest amount of milk possible dyring the first year, the young cow would begin to feel, as some of , our experts sav,—that it was her ‘business to give milk and to give lots of it, and thereafter every year better results would be obtained, and so the whole dairy would be brought to a hirher standard. There many other things that T might say ; but if our farmers will give snec- fal attention to the providing of sne enlent feed, I am sure that there would be a ereat advance made in the profits of dairying in this Province, .A.A.AYER.Montreal 13th Oect., 1908.— JAPANESE RESCRIPT.PEOPLE WANT TO BE KNOWN AS PEOPLE WANT" TO KNOW AS PRACEFUI, AND situated on Water street, cast of the Silver Spring Brewery, on land purchased from the Canada Paper Company. It has a frontage of fifty-eight feet and a depth of 17s feet 4 inches. It is rectangular in plan, that part facing Water street and to a depth of 22 fect being devoted to administrative and social purposes.front part is two stories in height, the remainder, or rink part being one story high, but still sufficiently ‘high to permit of a good view of the ‘entire ice The.building is of solid brick on concrete foundation, the roof being supported by Howe trussts, spaced 12 feet apart and resting on pilasters projecting from the face of the walls. This ar- ‘rangement obviates the necessitv of having columns.or posts ‘in the building. The main entrance porch is in the centre of facade and if tne onlv attempt at ornamentation on the building. The porch opens into a .alfge room 22 feet by 35 feet, to be used ‘as a general assembly; room.“To the left of the main entrance is placed the staircase leading to the second floor.and also that to the basement. To the right of the main entrance is the door leading to the smoking and locker room, a large airy abartment, 22 fect by: 20 feet. The rink is divided from the above rooms by a solid brick partition reaching to the toof. This partition is provided with large plate glass windows one placed opposite each sheet of ice.which there are three are separated by aisles, five feet wide, extending the whole length of the building and also across the full width of the building at the Tear.Envrance to the rink is gained by doors placed opposite the aisles, leading from the general assembly .rogm The basement is devoted to toilet and rnace rooms, Bo ectly at the head of the stairs on the second floor is a small room to be used as a kitchen. The whole of the remainder of this floor 1s to be used as a dining-room, but is so arranged that the part nearest the rink is for the use of spectators, which part = separated from the rest by a balustrade.; The whole of the interior of the building will be finished i a manner befitting its use, and altogether will be a building which will be à credit to the ssociation.; Aen completed, this pbuilding will represent a cost of about $13,000.The contract price for the construction of the foundation and brick work is $8,000.~ BASKET BALL | BOTH TEAMS PREPARED FOR THE
