o'clock, yesterday afternoon, the staff of the Sherbrooke ‘office of the Eastern Townships Bank, assembled in the rotunda to witness the presentation of a gol H watch and chain to Mr.Roy A.Ulghent, a teller of the, Bank, in recognition of his bravery, during an attack ‘on the Bank at Marieville, by burglars, in November last., : The presentation was made by the President, Mr.William Farwell, on behalf of:the Bank, Mr.Jas.Mackinnon, General Manager, and Messis.Gardner Stevens, Waterloo; C.H.Kathan, Rock Island, and Frank Grundy, Sherbrooke, Directors, being present, representing: the Board.= Mr.Mackinnon, in asking Mr.Far- well to make the presentation, spoke very highly of Mr, Clement’s gallant act, and said that the delay in acknowledging had heen caused by events over which they had no control. The President then presented Mr.Clement with the handsome gold waich and chain, suitably inscribed, “| with the following brief address : ““Wé wish to .express to you, Mr.Clement, our appreciation.and thanks for the courageous manner in which you defended the Bank, when it was attacked hy burglars.“Many men in such a position, dis- knowing from what direction the tack was to come, would have at- lost tion bravely, and in- such a manner that it ought to have had the result of sending the burglars away with marks which would have- enabled the | police to identify them.Unfortunately not being able to see the enemy, your shots did nbt have that effect. Many of our men, I am glad to say, have heen equally brave, under similar circumstances, where our staff have had a chance to protect the Bank's property.Often this has been done at the risk of their lives, as in your case.I had imagined you a larger, more robust young man, but it only .proves, |what we often find, that it is not al- | ways the largest ie n’who are most courageous.“The Directors are always pleased to recognize such conduct as yours, and ask you to accept this watch and chain, hoping you will wear it, and perhaps will hand it down to your children as a valued memento, and they trust you may long be spared to defend the Bank property with the same bravery.” Mr.Clement replied in a few modest words, thanking the President and Directors for their beautiful gift. The interesting’ occasion was brought to a close by three cheers given by the staff for Mr.Clement.The watch is adorned on the outside of the case with Mr.Clement's monogram, and inside has the following inscription : “Roy A.Clement, for his loyalty | and bravery in defending the property of the Eastern Townships Bank at Marieville from’ burglary, November 3rd, 1908.” The details of the affair are ‘well worth repetition.Mr.Clement was alone in the office at Marieville, where he slept, in the Bank, and was roused about two o’clock in the morning by- the breaking of a window, Rising, he trying to raise the sash.He immediately shot at them, and two ‘shots were fired at him, neither, however, takirig effect. He then ran to the door and opened it, firing several times again, to attract attention, and shouting for assiftance, which was soon at hand.In the light from the Bank, a neighbor, who had been aroused, saw three men running away in one direction, and two in another, so evidently a gang of burglars had intended breaking in, and were only prevented by the young bank clerk’s vigilance.Since the © above event the Bank has armed the staff with Winchester Riot guns. These weapons are -spe- cially constructed for use by men who.are not expert marksmen, and who, under the strain of great excitement, or in an uncertain light, are very apt to miss the mark. These armsywhich’ are loaded With heavy buckshot, scatter the charge in such a way that at a distance.of from” twenty to thirty feet a space of fifteen to ‘twenty square feet is entirely covered ; anybody within that radius would be: ‘completely riddled with shot.Mr.Roy Apt Clement is now stationed at the Fast End Branch of the Eastern Townships Bank, Montreal, and is the son of Mr.and Mrs.Apt Clement, of Farnham.During his
