also including in the same engraving, à representation of the power and agent of the magnet.The latter (universal motion) will be represented by a drawing of the solar systems with the planets surrounded by the electric element with a division of its pressure into local and universal repulsion, by which each planet is caused, from philosovhical principles, to travel in a curvilinear Line ! round the centre by one simple and primary impetus.As the above «ystems are entirely original, the author feds himself justified mn presenting them to an enlightened ; community.respectfully soliciting their patronage to a work that comprises assigned causes Tur many of the natural phenomena that have been looked upon by the whole school of philosophers, as beyond the reach of human ken to fathom, and that have slumbered in the cradle of Nalure's arcana, from the commencement of time, The author flatters himself that many causes of the strik ing phenomena which bave been deemtd past finding out, will be satisfactorily explained and developed.87 The price of the above work, bouni in shecp, wiil be 1 dol 25¢ts.; visions of admiration and matrimony float before their eyes ; some wonderfully meritorious institntion, which, by the strangest accident in the world, has never been heard of before, is discovered to bein a languishing condition ; Thomson’s great room, or Johnson's nursery ground, is forthwith engaged, and the aforesaid young ladies, from mere charity, exhibit themselves for three days, from twelve to four, for the small charge of one shilling per head! With the exception of these classes of society, however, and a few other weak and insiguiticant persons, we do mot think the contemptible attempt at imitation, to which we have alluded, prevails in any great degree, The different character of the recreations of different classes, has often afforded us amusement in our walks and musings; and we have chosen it for the subject of our present sketch, in the hope that it may possess some amusement for our readers.If the regular City man, who leaves Lloyd's at five o'clock, and drives home to Hackney, Clapton, Stamford-hill, or elsewhere, can be said to have any daily recreation beyond his dinner, it is his garden.He never does anything to it with his own hands, but he takes a great pride in it notwithstanding ; and if’ you are desirous of paying your addresses to the youngest daughter, be sure to be in raptures with every flower and shrubit contains.If your poverty of expression compel you to make any distinction between the two, we would certainly recommend | your bestowing more admiration on his garden thau kis wine.He always takes a walk round it before he starts for town in the morning, and is particularly anxious that the fish-pond should be kept specially Nore.—The following definition the author has attached to his orignal term presstraction :—"The natural power that causes bodies Lo approach each otlisr, without any sensible | cause, through the elastic medium, ele tric pressure, From the nture cf the real principle (pressure) and the YO .s ; fippatent one (traction,) cau-ing the mutual approach of fatigued with the occupations of the morning, and bodivs ar substances, without any vi-ible cause, he has established the term presstraction.—The verb presstract seemingly carrivs à contradiction (pressdraw,) as the real and apparent cause producing gravity invoives à contradiction.Therefore, the author thinks that presstraction 1s the most appropria‘e term to represent the principle of gravity, I'he above work, as far asininvalv «electricity, willbe endorsed (through citation) by the spirit of the philosophy of Franklin, relative to his electrical experiments, to establish the principles ; but the applications, however, are enurely original, MONTREAL TYPE FOUNDRY.N R.T, GUERIN having arrived from New- York, witha complete set of MACIINERY necessary to the manufacturing of TYPES, all orders transmutted to his Agents Messrs.LecLere & Jones, Ami ueat.If you cal! on him on Sunday in summer time, about an hour before dinner, you will find him sitting in an arm-chair, ou the lawn behind the house, with | a straw hat on, reading a Sunday paper.A short distance from him you will most likely observe a handsome paroquet in a large brass wire cage ; ten to one but the two eldest girls are loitering in one of | the side walks, accompanied by a couple of young fellows, who are hoiding parasols over them—of course only to keep the sun of— while the younger children, with the under-nursery maid, are strollivg listlessly about in the shade.Beyond these occasions, his delight in his garden appears to arise more from the consciousness of possession than actual enjoyment of it.When ho drives | you down to dinner on a week day he is rather tolerably cross into the bargain; but when the cloth is removed, and Lie has drauk three or four classes of his favourite port, he orders the French windows of i the dining-room (which of course look into the gar- | den) to be opened, and throwing a silk handkerchief "over his head, and leaning back in his arm chair, descants at considerable length upon its beauty, and the cost of maintaining it.This is to impress you— | Who are a young friend of the family—with a due sense of the excellence of the garden, and the wealth of its owner ; and when he has exhausted the subject he goes to sleep.There is another and a very diferent class of men, whose recreation is their garden, An individuoal of [ i | du Peaple Office, Montreal, will be execu ed with despatch ! this class resides some short distance from town—say and warranted equal to any imported Type.PLAIN LETTER.Diea Antique shaded 1 dols.ets I'wo Line Nonpareil Diamond per Ib.2006} Meridian shaded 1 l'earl I 40}Two Line Nonpareil Agate 1 1 double shaded 1 Agate on Nonpareil UFwo Line Brevier dou- body 03] ble shaded 1 Nonpareil so ANTIQUE LETIER Nonpareil on Minion Nonpareil Antique t 25 body BU Minion Antique 1 Ov Mmion on Nonpareil | Brevier Antique 81 body SC Long Primer Antique 61 Minmnette SC ia Antique 5 Minion TC Great Primer Antique 50 Minion on Drevier body 65 Double Pica Antique 44 Brevier on Minion body 68 Double Great Pinner Brevier St: Antique 76 Brevier on Bourgeois ;
