By Gordon Lambie Across the Townships daffodils are up almost a month earlier than usual this year, thanks in large part to an early burst of warm weather, but things aren’t quite as sunny in the Hatley common as Loni Campbell was expecting.“It’s not what I had hoped,” the resident said, estimating that somewhere between only a quarter and a third of the 1,000 daffodil bulbs she donated to the community in the fall of 2015 have bloomed.“The daffodils are not doing what I had hoped and prayed they would do, which is spread out and be more every year.” While commenting that she’s “more of a painter than a gardener,” Campbell said that she had been inspired by a love of ?owers and the experience of seeing parks full of daffodils in England during a year in London that originally inspired the donation.“I just thought having that in the common would be lovely,” she said, highlighting the way the yellow blooms are always among the ?rst ?owers of spring.WEEKEND EDITION CONT’D ON PAGE 3 CONT’D ON PAGE 3 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY already passed on the calendar (it was March 8) but the theme for this year, “Choose to Challenge” goes beyond a single day, or a trendy hashtag.Choosing to challenge the ongoing inequality in our world, and to continue to advocate and insist upon gender equity is a year-long, life-long project.I am so proud of my children and how when they observe or hear about inequality, they are so quick to exclaim “but that isn’t fair!”.Sometimes that inequality might be the taking turns system for a beloved activity breaking down, but it could also be learning about obstacles and injustice a marginalized group of people are facing in the wider world.Kids are particularly sensitive to the idea of “fairness”.Obviously, the personal bias of a ?ve- year-old is such that “unfair” doesn’t always accurately describe reality of their situation: (no, you cannot have candy for breakfast).Despite this particular limitation, children are compassionate and empathetic by nature and any time I have spent time explaining an inequality to kids before, I have been met with whole-hearted outrage and a thirst for change.Fueling that desire for activism and justice seeking can take many forms; writing to a local MNA or MP, participating a demonstration or a protest, and reading stories of other inspiring change-makers in our world.Walking for Water by award-winning author, Susan Hughes is a compelling story of an individual voice standing up for equality. The vividly colourful illustrations by artist Nicole Miles bring the story to life in front of your eyes.Victor and his sister Linesi have a very close relationship. They live in a small village in Malawi on a small farm with their hardworking Mother.Just after her eighth birthday, Linesi must stop attending school with her brother, to help her Mother and the other women of the village collect water from the river. This long walk to the river is done ?ve times daily, to collect water for the farm, the washing and drinking.Victor feels sad that he must now go to school alone and he misses his sister. With the arrival of a new teacher, Mr.Tambala, Victor is challenged to think about how his sister and all the other girls collecting the water is not fair.Mr.Tambala speaks about equality and ask the children in his class to observe and re?ect on the differences between how boys and girls are treated in their own families and community.Victor notices how the girls must go home from school and do chores, while he can stay and play sports. He notices how his sister cleans up from their evening meal while he works on his homework.Education, for Victor, means that he will have lots of choices for his future. His sister however, will only have the option to be married and work at home like their mother.Victor makes a very important decision after observing these inequalities (which bene?t him and offer him extra privileges) to share the work of collecting water with his sister. This way they can take turns going to school and helping one another catch up on the days they miss.Soon enough Victor is not the only boy walking for water, and more of Linesi’s friends are able to return to school with her. This book highlights some of the ways in which cultural practices and traditions can create a disadvantage for young women and disrupt their ability to pursue studies. At the end of the story there is a great background text about some of the changes to policy which have happened in recent years In Malawi to encourage girls and women to continue to go to school, and how access to safe water in local wells is an issue which contributes to other inequities and challenges for people.Inequality is not something which is exclusively found across the ocean or in developing countries. In Canada, we continue to fail to eliminate gender gaps in pay and have a national crisis of gender-based violence.Walking for Water shows us an excellent example of allyship in Victor, a boy, who despite enjoyed greater freedom and opportunities, chooses to use his power to create change. The book I am reviewing this week, is chosen from a selection of books sent to The Record by Kids Can Press, as a part of their initiative to engage local publications in reviewing new releases.I chose Walking For Water by Susan Hughes and by the time of this publication, it will be donated to the Lennoxville Library for the whole community to enjoy! still seeking out ways to fertilize them and encourage new growth.“The ones that have come up seem quite established,” she said.“They’re ?ourishing.” Daffodils CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Quebec announces more than $1 million in support of women entrepreneurs Record Staff The Quebec government is providing $1.17 million in ?nancial support to 67 women-owned businesses in the province, in order to promote the economic empowerment of women. The announcement came from Isabelle Charest, education minister and minister responsible for the status of women, as well as Economy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon. The ?nancial support program will be divided into grants ranging from $10,000 to $20,000.“It was imperative for us to take concrete action to ensure that women entrepreneurs did not lose their hard- won gains due to the pandemic,” said Charest. The program is led by Femmessor, an organization dedicated to the development of women’s entrepreneurship. The organization helps women in adapting their business model, products, and services to meet the challenges brought on by the pandemic.“I hope that these women entrepreneurs will be able to weather the crisis and continue to develop and adapt their business model to take their companies to new heights,” Charest said. She also thanked Femmessor for providing support and resources for women looking to stimulate the economy.Femmessor President and CEO Sévrine Labelle saluted the work done by the Secrétariat à la condition feminine.Labelle also expressed appreciation for being trusted to oversee the ?nancial assistance program. Not only will women entrepreneurs bene?t from ?nancial support, she explained, but they will also bene?t from sustained, personalized coaching for the next year.“We are particularly pleased that this project will support racialized women entrepreneurs, for whom the impacts of the pandemic have been even more imposing and who deserve our full attention,” said Labelle.data posted on its website about reactions to the various brands of vaccines. So far, the province has vaccinated 2,145,925 people (25.1 per cent of the population).Among those, 1,154 people had a reaction (in French, known as manifestations cliniques inhabituelles or MCI) to a vaccine (66 for every 100,000 people). The reactions range from minor, like skin irritation at the injection site, to severe.Moderna has the highest instance of reactions at 653 (215.5 for every 100,000 doses given) though the majority are mild in nature. The INSPQ reported AstraZeneca having 117 reactions (104.4 per 100,000 doses given).P?zer, which accounts for the bulk of the province’s vaccine supply to date, reported 384 reactions (29.0 per 100,000 does).More details are available on the public health institute’s website under the vaccinations tab at www.inspq.qc.ca.Quebec reported 1,513 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of people infected to 332,544.There are currently 14,018 active cases in the province. There were 15 new deaths reported in the last day, bringing the total to 10,778 since the beginning of the pandemic.Hospitalizations increased by one for a total of 661, and 159 patients are in intensive care, and increase of seven from the day before. In the Estrie, 38 new cases were reported, bringing the local total to 12,555 since the beginning of the pandemic. There are presently 400 active cases in the region. No new deaths were reported, the total remained stable at 324.The province is now reporting 19,227 cases of COVID-19 variants, 375 of which in the Estrie.AstraZeneca available without appointment CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 4 Friday, April 16, 2021 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record By Revs Mead Baldwin, Rabbi Boris Dolin Lee Ann Hogle, and Rev.Carole Martignacco 1) I grew up with television spy shows, like “Get Smart” or “I Spy”, where the lead character would have a normal name, but also a secret identity. They would often show a naive, innocent face to the world, then their true self would appear, and that’s when the action would heat up.It was fun and sometimes we wondered what our secret identity might be.Of course that’s not reality.Still all of us at some point are left with the question; “Who am I really? What is my true self?” This is a spiritual question, and not always easy to answer. Some use retreats, or pilgrimages to investigate this deep question.Others travel the world, or move to a new city to ?nd our calling. It’s interesting to note that Jesus also had this spiritual struggle. We read in the gospels that after his baptism, he went away into the wilderness to ponder who he really was.He left a carpenter, but returned embracing a new identity as spiritual teacher and healer. How about us?Sometimes as young people things are thrust upon us; join the family business, take up the same trade as your father, become a hairdresser like your aunt, marry young, and get your identity as a mother. In decades gone by our gender often predetermined our identity.I’m glad those days are gone.Still most of us try on 2 or 3 different careers until we ?nd out who we are meant to be.This takes years sometimes.Did you ever wonder if you might have a real secret identity waiting to emerge, just like Jesus did? It’s certainly something to think about.2) In my younger years I worried about my identity.Who was I really? What were my values? My weaknesses? My strengths?I had a lot of unanswered questions. But life itself teaches us.We all undergo stress tests that wound us, strengthen us, change us and sometimes even transform us.Adversity and loss helps us clarify what’s really important to us.Take Covid-19 for example.Deprived of our liberty of movement and lots of time isolated from others it becomes clear which people and activities are most important to us.Our strengths and our weaknesses become more evident. Our list of the things we will do once the dangers of Covid-19 are past indicates some of our passions as does the kind of hobbies we have been pursuing in the last 13 months. As we journey through life we will stumble even as we learn the most valuable of lessons. In the process our identity is forged. One of my most valuable lessons has been to nurture compassion for myself, even as I recognize that within life itself there is a benevolence, a sense of goodness that wants only the best for me.Compassion allows us to forgive our mistakes and that of others. It builds bridges between enemies. It binds us together as one human family. It is the hallmark of the life of Jesus.3) Asked how to identify yourself, what’s the ?rst thing you think of?Most of us have had the experience, ?lling out a form with limited multiple choice options, of thinking - but that’s not who I really am! And we choose the N/A option.Typically the questions asked of us on surveys, applications, or questionnaires tend to de?ne us by gender, ethnicity, relationships or marital status, education, job or career accomplishments, social standing, religious and other af?liations, or level of ?nancial prosperity, citizenship or legal status. What’s included on a curriculum vita or resumé can provide useful factual information and help make comparisons with others, but hardly provide a wholistic sense of identity, or there’d be little need for personal interviews.4) Much of what commonly identi?es us hardly scratches the surface of who we really are as one-of-a-kind, unique, unrepeatable in the entire history of the world, individuals. What if, stripped of all the usual identity markers, you were asked to explain yourself in all your richness and complexity? When we describe children, for example, we must reach beyond many of the categories listed above, as they do not yet apply. We might say things like: he’s a good communicator, she has a marked aptitude for music, he’s already very articulate, they like to draw, she’s remarkably adept at ?xing things, he shows signs of compassionate awareness and concern for others.Without the usual categories or labels, we need to go deeper to express something of the essence or quality of being. It’s useful to know how a best friend or life partner might describe us, as long as we’re open to learning something new, and unwilling to be limited by other’s ideas of who we are.Know thyself, says the ancient wisdom, to thine own self be true. How would you, given total freedom, de?ne yourself?Write a brief biography as if applying for the position of authentic human being. What personal qualities, passions, visions, or dreams would you name to describe yourself?Highlight qualities that most fully express your core identity. If central to who you have always been is your love for beauty, engagement with the world or passion for humanitarian causes - you get to claim that.Given the choice, who are you really? At the very heart of your existence - you know, and you get to say! I love the metaphors often used for how we exist in a diverse society.Melting pots, fruit salads, mosaics, rainbows of colors. Each of these ideas attempts to make sense of the ways that we hold on to our individual identities as we interact with and recognize the differences we ?nd in each other. At their best they ask us to not just accept these differences, but to honor them.Yet one metaphor has always stood out for me because it demands that we don’t just honor the differences, but reminds us that we need them for our own existence: puzzle pieces. While our own world of ideas, of life’s stories of joys and challenges is unique and beautiful on its own, as a puzzle, we are constantly reminded that we need each other to make the picture of our existence whole.Sometimes we ?nd those people who share our cultural background or values, and we ?nd how easy we “?t in”.Other times, it may seem like there are people that have no place in our puzzle because they are so different from us.We simply don’t understand how they could possibly ?t in.At the risk of taking the metaphor too far, there is a place of everyone in the puzzle if we can ?nd a way to make the space for them. This way of understanding identity and difference can also inspire us to work for justice in our world, to continue to try to ?x this brokenness. If we are always trying to work for a more complete, a more whole society, we can’t just try to ?t in and help the people closest to us.We need to dig deeper for the root causes of oppressions and challenges that we ?nd in our society, knowing that how people see themselves and how they live their lives, is as much caused by their individual story as the systems of oppression that might have been forced on them.We need to open up space for everyone who needs to feel whole. If we want our world to be better, we need to ?nd a place for all of the pieces of the puzzle. One word, four voices - now add your own: What have you discovered about your identity of late? What is most important to you?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rabbi Boris Dolin leads the Dorshei-Emet community in Montreal; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco, Unitarian Universalist is retired from ministry with UUEstrie and now resides in St.Andrews by-the-Sea NB, but keeps one foot in the Townships by continuing with this column. One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Identity PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, April 16, 2021 Page 5 The incomparable Mable Hastings! As far as the Missisquoi North Volunteer Centre (CABMN) is concerned, it’s been a remarkable year.Certainly, COVID-19 has been a factor. But so has its leader, Mable Hastings, an executive director who by any standards has been exceptional.Ask anyone on the CAB board, and each will describe an outstanding leader who keeps surpassing her own goals. So at a regular meeting of the board, Hastings was honoured; it was a little complicated given it was a virtual meeting, but the message that she had been awarded a bonus was ?nally relayed to her.Unfortunately, an accompanying pot of lilies she was supposed to receive as a surprise at the same time couldn’t be delivered.Luckily the lilies were waiting for her the next morning.Submitted by the CABMN board COURTESY Vocational training centre giving male-dominated professions a makeover Record Staff The Lennoxville Vocational Training Centre (LVTC) of the Eastern Townships School Board (ETSB) is launching a new project to diversify the educational choices in vocational training for young girls and women in two traditionally male trades offered at the centre. This project, called The Traditional Feminine Makeover! Will offer a free week (April 26 to 30, 2021) of immersion in the machinist and welder trades. The goal is to increase the number of women studying at LVTC in the Machining and Welding and Fitting programs.According to the training centre, a tailor-made formula has been developed to improve the study conditions for women in programs leading to traditionally male occupations. The one-of-a-kind immersion week will be totally personalized for a group of up to ten candidates. The LVTC hopes to continue offering the immersion program on an annual basis.Through the collaboration of local companies in the metallurgy ?eld, the project will allow participants to explore the labour market.A company located in Lennoxville participating in the project has offered testimonials from female employees working in machining and welding. All interested girls / women are invited to visit the LVTC website to register: https://www.lvtc.ca/ traditional-feminine-makeover/ or by phone: 819-563-5627.Participants will be welcomed at the Lennoxville Vocational Training Centre located at 1700 rue College, Sherbrooke. The week-long immersion program is completely free of charge and will take place between April 26 and 30, 2021.The project is offered in English in a bilingual environment, an asset for participants and future workers.Space is limited to ensure the safety of workshop participants and to abide by the health rules in force.Quebec’s seniors minister tables new policy to revitalize long-term care facilities Record Staff Seniors Minister Marguerite Blais tabled the province’s ?rst-ever policy on long-term care facilities Thursday, as part of the government’s efforts to create better living conditions and ensure quality of life for residents.“We want the services and care provided in these facilities to be of high quality and to correspond to the needs, preferences, lifestyles, values and culture of the people who live there,” said Blais. The seniors minister added the work that led to the development of the new policy is part of an overall effort from the government to provide all residents in long-term care facilities with superior care and services catered to their age.According to a press release, no government has ever provided general and inclusive guidelines to be applied in all types of long-term care facilities. The Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS), however, reiterated that home care is the preferred option. But when a person’s physical or cognitive health begins to impact their home life, leading them to a long-term care facility, they need to be assured that they will receive support to help in recovery or develop independence, the press release continued.Health Minister Christian Dubé said this is a major priority for the Coalition Avenir Québec government. The end goal is to provide a safe and stimulating environment for different clientele, he explained, every resident has the right to a quality living environment.“Long-term care facilities must become places of which we are collectively proud and, above all, where people feel at home, in security,” said Dubé.Financial assistance available to livestock producers affected by slaughterhouse delays Record Staff The federal and provincial governments have created the Can- ada-Quebec Livestock Assistance Initiative, $21.8 million in ?nancial assistance intended to mitigate the consequences of COVID-19 in 2020- 2021.Compton-Stanstead MP and Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Marie-Claude Bibeau, and Quebec’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, André Lamontagne, announced the new program in a joint press release on Thursday.“The health crisis caused by COVID-19 continues to put stress on food producers and processors and affect their operations. We are aware of the challenges they face and we are working with the government of Quebec to ?nancially support Quebec’s cattle, pig and large game producers. This initiative will help, among other things, to offset the costs generated by the temporary closure of certain slaughterhouses, to ensure animal welfare, and to preserve the food security of the people of Quebec and Canada,” commented Bibeau. In the spring of 2020, the rate of livestock slaughter slowed considerably, forcing producers to keep animals longer and resulting in signi?cant additional costs. The delays also posed risks to the health and welfare of the animals. The slowing of slaughter was the result of sanitary measures and the absence of some workers affected by the coronavirus, as well as a substantial drop in demand for large game meat caused by the suspension and reduced capacity of hotels and restaurants.“The pandemic has reminded us of how crucial the bio-food sector is to maintaining the Quebec population’s access to a variety of quality foods,” said Centre-du-Québec MNA and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food André Lamontagne.“Our government, which is particularly sensitive to issues affecting the food supply chain, recognizes its leadership role. The situation of livestock producers who have to keep their animals on the farm longer than expected has generated considerable costs.Financial assistance to support them was necessary, and I am very happy that our two governments are supporting those who are working to feed our world,” the MNA said. The assistance aims to offset part of the costs borne by livestock producers to keep animals awaiting slaughter on farms until normalcy is restored.La Financière agricole du Québec will manage applications for the Initiative until the assistance is paid.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER Legault’s recent announcement moving the curfew back to 8 p.m.is both appalling and shameful. While I fully respect, and support, the right to protest and understand the situation is frustrating for Montrealers, I cannot accept the casual vandalization of small businesses. This seems to occur at the tail end of many protests. And the story is the same.A small group of violent stragglers wreaking havoc on a neighbourhood, destroying property without remorse. This time it was in Old Montreal. In the wake of the protest, business owners suffering due to the pandemic were left picking up the pieces of shattered windows.I think perhaps I missed the point of this barbarism.Or, you know, it was simply a thoughtless, violent act, instigated by a group that actually doesn’t care for the wellbeing of others. My Take: By Michael Boriero My Take: By Matthew McCully It’s important to remember that a lot happens behind the scenes before people take to the streets to protest. It’s not a willy-nilly decision, it’s not a day off work. It’s a last resort.Still, there is always a segment of the population that can’t stomach civil unrest. When the railroad in Lennoxville was blocked in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en First Nation, people complained about traf?c.Mask police criticized the Black Lives Matter demonstration last summer in Sherbrooke. These days, teachers are demanding better work conditions, and they are being called money hungry. There’s usually an “I agree with them, but…” tacked on to misinformed, obnoxious critiques of groups with the gall to disrupt the morning commute.Ironically, I’ve seen people at Tim Hortons throw Oscar-worthy ?ts about getting the wrong muf?n.When people feel forced to take to the streets, it’s time to listen. My Take: By Taylor McClure From my perspective, the freedom of peaceful assembly is one of the most important human rights guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.Without the right to protest, the decisions of those in power would be the ?nal say, even if they are not in citizens’ best interest.Recently, Quebec teachers took a stand against the conditions they, and their students, are facing within the education system.Comments that I heard extended from “ugh, not again” and “it’s always about the money.” Protests are often misunderstood and people lack context of their purpose. Those who are brave enough to take a stand are often ?ghting not for themselves, but for their families, the vulnerable, and future generations.I was recently accepted to do my Masters at Concordia University, once upon a time this wouldn’t have been possible; I think you get my point. In the 1970s I was selling real estate in Montreal. One day I sold a house to Guy La?eur for $120,000.It was one of the biggest sales at the time in our of?ce.In discussing it with my fellow agents afterward I commented, “You know, the day may come when you won’t be able to buy a house for under $100,000.” Some forty-odd years later I no longer sell real estate but I have observed that if things continue the way they are going one day you won’t be able to buy a house for under $1,000,000.Just saying.JOAN WINDLE BARNES Letters The Record welcomes a little-seen mural on a section of the store’s north-facing wall that depicts Richmond Hardware’s previous owners, Julie’s father and uncle, Mark and Paul O’Donnell portrayed as Laurel and Hardy.Richmond mural project: A ?ourishing community of many languages and cultures By Nick Fonda At present, it’s just a wall of red, Richmond-?red brick, but, if things go according to plan, this summer it will become a wall with a 600 square foot mural that acknowledges and celebrates the past, present, and future of the various communities that make up Richmond and the surrounding area.“We are well into our fundraising phase,” says Norma Husk, who, along with Julie O’Donnell, heads a committee that is organizing the project.“But our goal is $40,000 so we still have a way to go.” While Norma is president of the Richmond County Historical Society and Julie vice-president of the Richmond St.Patrick’s Society, they were quick to mention that the mural is a community project. However, the fact that the two non-pro?t groups are involved has made it possible for those who make a donation of $20 or more to receive a tax receipt in return for their contribution. The idea of decorating an otherwise blank wall with a mural was already old when Leonardo DaVinci painted The Last Supper on a church wall in Milan.Closer to home, Sherbrooke boasts at least 18 superb murals that have appeared in different parts of the city over the last few decades. That Richmond will soon have its own public mural stems from a chance encounter Norma had with Richmond’s mayor, Bertrand Ménard, about two years ago.A ?re had only recently razed a rooming house to the ground leaving the south-facing wall of Richmond Hardware visible to anyone in the small park named after René Thibault.“I suppose something of the sort had been on my mind,” explains Norma Husk, “because when I happened to meet the mayor near the park, I said to him, wouldn’t it be great if we had a mural on that wall?He seemed to like the idea, nodded, and suggested I talk to Julie, who owns Quincaillerie Richmond.” Julie also liked the idea. After all, there is already a little-seen mural on a section of the store’s north-facing wall that depicts Richmond Hardware’s previous owners, Julie’s father and uncle, Mark and Paul O’Donnell portrayed as Laurel and Hardy. This was encouragement enough for Norma to strike a small committee and to contact Serge Malenfant, the artist behind M.U.R.I.R.S.and the Sherbrooke murals.“I knew Serge from long before,” Norma says.“I had invited him to speak to my Ethnography class at Bishop’s University. My students enjoyed his talk as he took them through everything a mural involves: from the formulation of an idea to the historical research and the composition of the mural, to the illusion of three dimensions on a ?at surface.” That he ?rst met the committee on a rather cold and rainy afternoon didn’t in any way dampen anyone’s enthusiasm for the project.“Serge left us with the rather daunting task of coming up with a design,” Norma recalls, “and with some practical suggestions as well. For example, the greater the detail in the mural, the higher the cost.Similarly, if we wanted portraits in the mural, that too would raise the cost.He also advised that the mural not be painted directly on the brick, but rather on panels that could then be mounted on the wall.Painting out of doors isn’t always easy or even possible.Panels would permit the artists to paint in the comfort of their own studios.” The small committee met several times to determine what elements should be included in the mural. The list was long: the agrarian nature of the surrounding area, the landmark churches, the bridges—both physical and symbolic—the river, the railroad, the annual St.Patrick’s parade, the Home Children, the linguistic and cultural diversity of the early settlers, and the First Nations people who were here long before Elmore Cushing erected the ?rst cabin in 1798.“We made a point of contacting the Grand Council of the Waban- Aki in Wolinak to get their input,” says Norma.“The mural will have a banner with the inscription, written in Waban-Aki, that translates as ‘You are welcome on Waban-Aki territory’ as per their suggestion. It will also include a depiction of sweetgrass and strawberries—a fruit that for the Waban-Aki represents women—as well as a Waban-Aki ?gure paddling a canoe.” The mural will depict ten distinct scenes and, in the foreground, will be a youthful ?gure carrying a basket of ?owers.“The symbolism is of a ?ourishing community made of many languages and cultures,” explains Julie O’Donnell.“The ?owers in the basket represent the different nationalities that melded together here: the lily for the French, the rose for the English, the shamrock for the Irish, the thistle for the Scots, the tulip of the Dutch, and the daffodil for the Welsh. And the sweetgrass for the Waban-Aki who were here long before all the others.” When the committee eventually drafted a rudimentary design, with the help of researcher David Bernard, it was sent on to Serge Malenfant.“Using computer graphics, he ended up making over a dozen different maquettes for us,” says Norma.“The actual painting of the mural will be done under Raphaelle Coulombe-Allie,” adds Julie.“She worked with Serge Malenfant for many years and now heads up Mur Mura, a group of muralists who are continuing the work of M.U.R.I.R.S.” “We’ve received support from the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network and from Townshippers,” says Norma, “as well as the Community Learning Centre, Richmond MNA, André Bachand, and some individuals and local businesses. So far, the response has been very good.” As well as the mural itself, the project entails an interpretation panel to be installed nearby, and a plaque with the names or logos of all the individuals and organizations making contributions of $250 or more.If possible, there will also be some sort of formal inauguration of the mural.Donations are very much appreciated and can be made in person at Quincaillerie Richmond, 220 Main Street in Richmond; by mail to the RCHS, 1161 Rte.243, Melbourne Township, J0B 2B0; or by e-transfer to treasurer@RCHS-SHCR.ca.NICK FONDA cultural agreement with Quebec government Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are now higher than in the last 3.6 million years, despite restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the U.S.National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.Carbon dioxide levels exceed 420 parts per million and are now 50per cent above pre-industrial concentrations. This is but one example of how humanity continues to undermine its own security and bring havoc to our planet’s 12,000 years of benign and predictable climate and biodiversity patterns. It is as if we are in a daze that prevents us from viscerally feeling and rationally accepting behaviour that is clearly fracturing our world.Scientists call this ‘slow violence’—where the outcome of our actions is hidden and may take decades to reveal itself. The term ‘slow violence’ originated in Rob Nixon’s book Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor, in which he explores the implications slow violence has for environmental justice.Taking a plane for each vacation is a form of slow violence. The list is devastatingly long.Ordinary acts that have been shown by green criminology to harm and ultimately culminate in an act of ecocide are perpetrated in a slow death dance that society rarely notices. The lack of solid long-term solutions on the part of individuals, corporations and governments to climate breakdown and biodiversity loss will bring about ecological chaos, but for today we don’t notice the reverberations taking place.By exploring the meaning of concepts such as slow violence, society may be able to come to terms with and change our pro?igate unmindful selves.Ben Shread-Hewitt wrote an article in the journal Uneven Earth de?ning slow violence as “suffering, degradation, and pain in?icted upon people and communities by impersonal, dispersed forces; spread across time and space, with no de?ned point of impact, but nevertheless the result of perpetrators’ actions.” The full article can be found at http://unevenearth.org/2021/03/ slow-violence/ .He gives a tragic example of slow violence worthy of investigation by a green criminologist: Vietnam War atrocities.“The last military spraying of Agent Orange in Vietnam…was in 1971, yet its poisonous effects persist half a century later, killing, maiming, and deforming thousands. It lingers, percolating, pooling, and welling in muds, soils, and water, biomagnifying through food chains and into populations. The cancers it in?icts can be as deadly and debilitating as any instantaneous bomb or bullet, but they act slowly and implacably, when the aggressions have long since disengaged… Agent Orange is a pertinent example of slow violence, but it is amongst the easiest to recognize. From the poisoned waters of Flint to Paci?c Islanders living in the wake of nuclear testing, long-term, proliferating violence constructs and blights their futures in hidden and pervasive ways.” Shread-Hewitt continues: “Slow violence is a tool for overcoming these long-imposed barriers on what we can claim to be right or wrong, violence or not.It is a particularly important device for political ecologists in the era of the ‘Anthropocene,’ where the seeming abstractness of global issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution can be used by the biggest perpetrators to forgo responsibility for the harm they in?ict. If we are to strive for a more just ecological future, then recognizing what is to be overcome is one of the ?rst challenges.” In the Routledge International Handbook on Green Criminology we ?nd an important chapter entitled ‘The ordinary acts that contribute to ecocide,’ written by Robert Agnew, which focuses on the roots of green criminal behaviour.‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ has become one of humanity’s most destructive obsessions. We may think that overconsumption is based in conformity rather than crime, but Agnew explores the enormity of the crisis on the basis of criminal theory and the psychological underpinning that ultimately create ecocide.Hence we have ‘green criminology.’ Agnew’s essay asks us to re?ect on our personal everyday acts of harm that are evident at disastrous levels across the western world. He gives the powerful example of overconsumption found in the United States.Although it has only 5 per cent of the world’s population, it contributes 32 per cent of global expenditure on consumption. Each of us also must consider the impact of Instagram culture that for many people seems to include buying fast fashion and wearing it only a few times and sometimes even just once; washing clothes too frequently and on too hot a wash and then tumbling them dry rather than using a clothes line; leaf-blowers rather than rakes; a gas lawnmower instead of a push lawn mower; single-use packaging rather than taking a reusable bag to the shop; driving to the gym; buying books rather than borrowing them from a library; eating in a fast-food chain rather than having a garden or buying local produce from a food coop; turning up the heating rather than putting on another layer of clothing. The ‘ordinary harms’ that Canadians and Americans so easily forget about then become the incentives for corporations and governments to commit ecocide by perhaps building yet another coal power plant or giving the go-ahead for more deforestation to plant more soybeans for cattle or to plant palm oil trees where orang-utans once lived.Underestimating the Challenges of Avoiding a Ghastly Future is the title of a paper written recently by a group of international scientists.Clearly it was chosen to strike fear into each of us so that humanity ceases to procrastinate when it comes to climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, human overconsumption and population growth.“Ours is not a call to surrender— we aim to provide leaders with a realistic ‘cold shower’ of the state of the planet that is essential for planning to avoid a ghastly future.” This paper has almost as many pages dedicated to over 150 scienti?c reference papers as it has for the content, and it is those same footnotes that most importantly detail the urgency for action. The essay does not spare us.Failed international agreements such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, or the Aichi Biodiversity Targets for 2020 set at the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2010 conference to reverse major global ecological crises and ultimately economic downward spirals are symptomatic of the overwhelming complexity of events amassing to form a ‘ghastly future.’ The authors tell us, “Therefore, the apparent paradox of high and rising average standard of living despite a mounting environmental toll has come at a great cost to the stability of humanity’s medium- and long-term life-support system. In other words, humanity is running an ecological Ponzi scheme in which society robs nature and future generations to pay for boosting incomes in the short term.” They un?inchingly speak of population growth in the context of ecological destruction as well as con?rming the Sixth Mass Extinction the planet is now undergoing. The full article is available online at https:// tinyurl.com/ghastly-future.Naturalists such as David Attenborough and David Suzuki have been at the forefront of the effort to educate people.Attenborough’s documentaries have become increasingly blunt while at the same time contrasting the current state of nature with that of just 70 years ago, and he now addresses the issue of ecological catastrophes directly to world governments or to us with a plea to once again let nature thrive: we can stop the incessant bulldozer mentality if we only demand it of ourselves and governments. The ?rst part of Mary Christina Wood’s Nature’s Trust is a brilliant exposé of what goes wrong when government relinquishes its legal obligations and instead protects corporate power and not Nature and its citizens. The second half proposes a blueprint to rejuvenate democracy and save our planet. If humanity were to take seriously its ethical responsibility to be Nature’s steward, future generations might ?ourish. She admonishes us by saying, “Together we hold not the power of life, but the trust of life.” Douglas Nadler Record Staff The city of Sherbrooke has signed a three-year cultural development agreement, between 2021 and 2023, with the Quebec government, providing a total budget of $1,332,992.The goal of the new agreement is to ensure the presence of a cultural life is accessible to all citizens in the area, according to a press release. The investments linked to the agreement will bene?t projects in theatre, dance, music and visual arts.Paul Gingues, chair of Sherbrooke’s culture committee, was pleased with the commitment from the city and the provincial government. The cultural agreement will help support theater workshops, which pairs citizens with performing arts professionals.“Together, we are demonstrating the importance that must be given to our culture and its access to citizens,” said Gingues.Sherbrooke plans to launch a call for projects for cultural organizations in the area in order to support the creation of artistic activities. They also want to see projects aimed at giving creative experiences to seniors.Artists, authors and artisans will be included in the agreement’s action plan, the press release stated. They will be asked to participate in a discussion activity next May.The meeting will be used to clearly identify the needs of professional and emerging artists. There will also be a conscious effort to protect Sherbrooke’s culture heritage sites. The city will compile an inventory of rural buildings and historical heritage sites. They are also planning a project to develop archaeological sites in the area.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY TV, the London, Ontario native is a testimonial to those wishing to follow a sports media career. In an email interview, Redmond, now living in New York and host of a daily show on NHL Network called NHL Now, shared in a Q&A how her career started and her future plans.Q: While growing up, how much in?uence did your dad have on your love of sports?A: Big time! I would say my relationship with my dad was probably the biggest in?uence on my career path.We were best friends when I was growing up.We’d watch Leafs and Jays games together and I think he had me listening to sports talk radio when I was like nine. He’s the ?rst person who taught me that my voice mattered, that I could sit at the table with the boys and talk sports and hold my own.I owe a lot to him for giving me that con?dence.Q: Can you share a key moment that you decided to pursue a sports media career?A: I think for me, it started in high school.I would always end up in these debates with the boys at school. They were always shocked by how much I knew about the Maple Leafs. But in high school everybody is trying to ?t in and ?nd their place and I just never felt more comfortable than when I was talking about sports.Ultimately, I just wanted to have a job that was fun so I went for it.Q: I understand you played left wing in hockey. What was that like and do you still play?A: I haven’t played hockey in a long time! Haha! But I did play my entire childhood, up until college. Some of my best memories as a kid stem from playing hockey on the backyard rink (or road hockey in the summer) with the neighborhood kids and going to hockey tournaments. My sister and I both played, and we did get to play on the same team in high school which was really cool for us.I do think team sports teaches kids a lot of great values and I certainly learned a lot about leadership, the value of pushing yourself to get better and working with others through playing sports.I miss it! Q: Who is your favourite hockey player?A: Now that I cover the sport I don’t have a favourite player per se, but when I was a kid my favourite was Doug Gilmour, then Mats Sundin, then Darcy Tuckey, Cujo (Curtis Joseph); all Leafs, of course.Q: What is the pecking order for your favourite sports?A: Hockey and baseball are the two sports I played growing up and the two that I enjoy watching most today.Q: Tell us about winning the Gillette Drafted: The Search for Canada’s Next Sportscaster back in 2011?A: Oh gosh.Feels like a lifetime ago. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me; a crazy, wild and terrifying experience. It landed me my ?rst job in sports at The Score Television Network, which no longer exists. But it was the perfect starting place for me.It wasn’t a traditional network and it was the type of place that really encouraged everyone to push the envelope and be themselves. The Score was ahead of its time in my opinion in the way that they pushed their hosts to be more than just hosts, to be personalities too.Q: Tell us your role now and what do you enjoy the most?A: Right now I host a daily show on NHL Network called NHL Now.It’s two hours of live TV every day and it’s all hockey. We do everything from analysis to player interviews to debates and highlights.I like to describe it as a hockey talk show.I think my favourite thing about NHL Now is that we are given so much creative freedom and as a woman, I have a voice.I work for a network that not only supports but encourages me to share my opinion and be a part of the conversation about the game.It means the world to me.Q: What advice would you give to women pursuing a career in sports broadcasting?A: This will sound cliché, but trust your instincts. There are so many people who will give you advice or tell you what to do and what not to do, but in the end I truly believe that the only way to succeed is to stay true to who you really are.Do the work, stay true to yourself and don’t let anybody tell you that you don’t belong.Q: What broadcasting goals are still out there for you?A: I would love to cover an Olympics.I think it’s a bucket list item for any sportscaster and it would be a dream to cover hockey at an Olympic Games.I would just be over the moon to do it.Q: International Women’s Day was last month. What message would you like to give?A: I just want young women to know that they are more powerful than they realize and that they deserve to dream big dreams.I feel like society has a way of shaming women for daring to live a big life.Successful women are so often painted as “too ambitious”, “too bossy” and “too much.” Don’t ever let anybody make you feel like you’re “too much” simply because you have big goals. You are WORTHY of them.Sportscaster Jackie Redmond is carving her own niche in world of pro sports Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind COURTESY PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Townships on the menu Pineapple pizza, usually referred to as Hawaiian Pizza, offers that mix of sweet and savoury which most traditional pizza combinations don’t offer.WEEKDAY MORNING Bell Star 6 AM 6:30 7 AM 7:30 8 AM 8:30 9 AM 9:30 10 AM 10:30 11 AM 11:30 WCAX # - April 22, 2021 TV Listings TALK There is this on-going debate about pineapple pizza. My son-in-law loathes it, he feels that there is no place for pineapple on pizza.I, on the other hand, enjoy the juxtaposition of the saltiness of the ham and the sweetness of the pineapple. So, the debate goes on.I don’t really see what all the fuss is about.I ?nd that a pizza crust is a great canvas for experimenting on.Just the other day I made mild antipasto and curd cheese pizza.I had never used antipasto on a pizza before and found that the combination was delightful and while not your average go-to pizza toppings, it was delicious.Pineapple pizza, usually referred to as Hawaiian Pizza, offers that mix of sweet and savoury which most traditional pizza combinations don’t offer.Maybe it’s the thought of sweetness on pizza which is not primarily attractive to some. And yet, in another form, the same dough can be made into cinnamon buns or beaver tails and then it seems to be okay. Here are some other sweet and savoury pizza combinations that might spark its own new debates.Pear and Prosciutto Spread your favourite pizza sauce over your rolled-out dough.Slice up ?rm pears, skin and all.Make sure that the pear slices are not too thin otherwise they could dry out in the baking.Add goat cheese and a little mozzarella for a bit of cheesy goodness.Bake that in the oven for eight to ten minutes at ?ve hundred degrees. As soon as you take it out of the oven, add the sliced, cold prosciutto and fresh arugula.Peach, Raspberry and Ham I would brush a little garlic oil on the crust and bake it at ?ve hundred degrees for about ?ve to eight minutes or until golden brown, then generously top with chopped cooked ham, fresh raspberries and peach slices.I add the fruit after the baking so that they do not become too soft. The ham can be baked if you prefer it to be warm.A soft creamy cheese would be really nice with this, like a brie or bocconcini.I like the bocconcini because it adds texture to the pizza but does not upstage the other ?avours.Blueberry Pizza with ricotta, caramelized shallots and bacon In in a saucepan, sauté shallots in olive oil, butter and a little brown sugar for about thirty minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally.Add a little salt to draw out the natural ?avours.Once your dough is rolled or stretched-out, spread ricotta cheese on the uncooked crust, you can also cover it with a little grated mozzarella cheese.Add the caramelized shallots and bacon bits and sprinkle thyme over that, then and add your blueberries.Bake at high oven for eight to ten minutes. You can add a little fresh grated parmesan cheese when you’ve taken it out of the oven. You may prefer to add the blueberries after baking so that they won’t get soft.If you are looking for more homemade pizza inspiration, visit us at our new pizza boutique at 127 Queen St., in Lennoxville from Tuesday to Saturday, we are here to serve you.Pineapple pizza, love it or hate it?Brad Laurie METRO CREATIVE PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW TALK TV Listings April 16 - or we were, anyway.Lately, I have noticed that often I text him, call him or Face- Time him, and he doesn’t respond back. Then ?nally, three days later, he will text back and ask when am I ?ying to him.I question him on why or what happened I haven’t heard from him.His answer is always that he’s been busy working.I’ve noticed that whenever I mention getting extra pay at work, he responds right away.Annie, maybe, deep down, my heart is saying that maybe he is a scammer and actually doesn’t feel about me the way I’d hoped he would.I get nostalgic looking back on how he treated me four months ago when we ?rst started talking, and it’s not the same.I’ve brought this up with him, but he just insists he’s working to make a good life for us when I come.- Love Two Men Dear Love Two: In case your heart isn’t saying it loudly enough, I’ll add my voice to the chorus: This man is a scammer. If that weren’t reason enough to lose his number, there’s also the fact of your marriage. You and your husband took vows, and that still means something, even if you’ve grown apart. You owe it to yourselves to try bridging the gulf.Tell him how you’re longing for intimacy and affection; commit to marriage counseling together.(There are also online counseling options available, such as Better- Help and Couples Therapy Inc.) If you’ve completely moved on and are going to continue seeing other men, OK, ?ne.But at least ?rst give your husband the courtesy of a divorce - and don’t give new suitors your credit card numbers, passwords, Social Security number, birthdate or other personal data.Read on for a few additional tips, courtesy of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.Beware if the individual seems too perfect or quickly asks you to leave a dating service or social media site to communicate directly.Beware if the individual requests inappropriate photos or ?nancial information.Beware if the individual promises to meet in person but then always comes up with an excuse why he or she can’t.If you haven’t met the person after a few months, for whatever reason, you have good reason to be suspicious.Never send money to anyone you have only communicated with online or by phone.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
