a speech delivered before the Methodist Episcopal Conference at Salem, Mass, recently, accused President Cleveland of intemperance. When the report subsequently published was shown to the President, he said with considerable warmth: ‘This is simply an outrage.Though it is not the first time a thing of this kind has been attempted, I can- net avoid a feeling of indignation that any man who makes any claim to decency, and especially one who assumes the role of a Christian minister, should permit himself to become a disseminator of wnolesale lies and calumnies not less stupid than they are cruel and wicked.‘1 easily recall other occasions when those more or less entitled to be called ministers of the gospel have been instrumental in putting into circulation the most scandalous falsehoods concerning my conduct and character.‘The elements or factors of the most approved outfit for placing a false and barefaced accusation befcre the public appear to be, first, some ône with baseness and motives sufficient to invent it: second, a minister, with more gullibility and love of notoriety than piety, greedily willing to listen to it and gabble it, and, third, a newspaper anxiously willing to publish it.‘ For the sake of the Christian religion, I am thankful that these scandal mongering ministers are few, and on every account I am glad that the American people love fair play and justice, and that, in spite of all efforts to mislead them, they are apt to form a correct estimate of the character and labors of their public servants.’ THE PRESS INDIGNANT.New York, April 9.—The ‘ Commercial Advertiser * (Republican), prints a scorching editorial on the charge made against President Cleveland in the New England Methodist Episcopal Conference by Dr.Lansing, of Boston. It fully endorses President Cleveland's characterization of the attack as ‘simply an outrage’ and of the clergyman himself as a ‘disseminator of wholesale lies and calumnies not less stupid than they are cruel and wicked.’ The ‘ Commercial Advertiser’ says: ‘There is far too much of this reckless defamation in cur pulpits. It is proper to say that the chief offender in this relation is not the press. At one period in histery it might have becen otherwise but to-day the newspapers as a body lean to fair- ess.As shocking as the truth is the sin of bearing false witness against public men has been transferred to the pulpit. The mest reckless and the most monstrous cnarges come from clergvmen.‘The offence is greater because the pulpit is privileged and its utterances have, if not the force of inspiration, at all events the weight of traditional sincerity, and asspciations of sanctity. It is not without reason that the public mind resents tbe influence of the ‘priest in politics, since what he says is ex-cathedta.He is unanswerable except when an outraged public opinion turns upon him as it turns upon the Rev.Dr.Lansing.FEELING AMONG THE CLERGY.Salem, April 9.—In the England Conference yesterday the Rev.C.E.Davis, chairman of the temperance committee, arose and said that Dr.L J.on President Cleveland Mass, New Lansing's attack in his temperance address before the conference had placed the conference in a rather embarrassinæ position and he asked the committee to meet him before the afternnon in of the fact that the conference is in no way sponsible for the utteranres of Dr.Lansing and that Dr.Lansing holds himself personally responsible for the statements he made.Mr.Davis's request was voted down by an almost unanimous vote.session, view ra- A CONTRADICTION FROM BUZZARD'S BAY.Buzzard’s Bay, Mass, April 9.—The charges made against President Cleveland by Dr.Lansing at Salem created great surprise among the people here who are acquainted with the President and are in the habit of seeing him frequently during his residence here in the summer. The following statement is voluntarily made by a gentleman well known in politics, a Re- punlican who has been more intimately acquainted with the President during his sojourns here than anybody else outside cf his immediate family or employees: ‘For the past three summer seasons I have been a frequent caller at Gray Gables and at times have seen the President every day; sometimes early in the day; often on his return from fishing trips and again in the evening after dinner.Ican bonestly say that I have never seen Mr.Cleveland under the influence of liquor in and so far as 1 know during the summers here he refrained from its use.’ Similar utterances are made by other pecple here who are accustomed to see Mr.Cleveland frequently.MR.LANSING APOLOGISES.Bogton, Mass., April 9.—The Rev.I.J.Lansing, whose references to the President in his address before the New England Conference at Salem, last Thursday night, provoked extended criticisio, gives out the following statement to-night:—- ‘My allusion made in a temperance address at Salem on Thursday, April 4, to the drinking habits of the President of the United States was based partly on common report and partly on the testimony of eye witnesses.rom various and independent sources, which I believed to be wholly reliable, I had been informed that the President had been seen on different.occasions and in the presence of many persons in an intoxicated condition. From the circumstantial and detailed character of these statements 1 supposcd there was no doubt as to the facts alleged.I therefore made this allusion as a matter of common report.basing my con- fldence on the testimony of perscnal and as I supposed credible witnesses. The raumes of those witnesses cbviously I cannot with propriety reveal, since sharing their knowledge in common with many others they might justly shrink from being singled out and called to verify that of which not only they but others equally with themselves had ocular proof.1 must therefore say that if my statement reproducing such testimony is not in harmony with facts I regret having made it.I cculd have neither desire nor motive for saying anything unkind or uncharitable cf the President or of any parly whatsoever. The case being one of conflict of testimony between witnesses of equal credibility I cannot decide.I have no personal knowledge apart from the testimony.I withdraw the statement tender apolegies and sincere regret to the President of the United States and to the public.’ and een LEISURE FOR REPENTAMCE.SIR HIBBERT TUPPER FEELS BAD OVER HIS RECENT BOLT.Ottawa, April 9.—As bit by bit the history of Sir Hibbert Tupper’s strike comes out the fiasco it was becomes clearer and reports brought here by prominent Con- scrvatives from Montreal, Toronto, and other cities show that what little reputation the Minister of Justice had is completely gone. The absurdity of his strike even dawned on the striker himself because when he resumed his attendance at the cabinet ‘council, after nearly a week's absence, he broke the awkward si- lence upon entering the council chamber with the remark, ‘ard the cat came back,’ thus unconsciously paying a well deserved compliment to a clever Toronto cartoonist.Sir Hibbert Tupper would give a ; &cundland month's salary to get back the threatening letter he sent the Premier on the eve of his temporary retirement, but Sir Mackenzie Bowell intends to keep it as a me-' mento of the first occasion when he had to dress down a refractory colleague ani As summon parliament for April IA.Preparations for the general elections were actively preceed- ing.Up to Tuesday everything pointed to a general election, but the growing feeling in Ontario against interference in Manitoba's school affairs undoubtedly led the government to defer its appeal to the country.” This frank statement publishel in a quarter where facts and not politics are April 9.—The Ottawa intercol- onial conference gave rise to considerable talk about intercolonial trade arrangments under which all the colories of the empire should make a preferential reduction in customs duties.New Zealand and South Australia are now considering a proposed reciprocity treaty made possibl> by the Imperial act relating to Australia passed in the British Porlicment two weeks ago.One of the provisions of the proposed arrangement is that it shall Fe confined to the two contracting parties and not susceptible of extension to other colonies. They do not unierstand a reciprocity treaty as Mr.Fester does, to be an arrangement be- Lkech two parties for the benfit also of a third. This deals a blow at the intercol- onial trade idea so assiduously cultivated br those who feel that the N.P.is a white elephant on the hands of the Conservative party. It also brings up a question in regard to New Zealand's reported proposal to Canada. It is significant to note in this connection that the Secretary of State for the Colonies in introducing the Australian bill withdrawing the prohibition cf 1S7S against making any fiscal arrangements with any other colony stated that the power thus conferred could not be exercised in attempting any preferential arrangement with the United King- doni.It was also officlally stated that any fiscal arrangements between the colonies would be reserved for the assent of Her Majesty's Government._— NEW LAVAL M.D.'S.The following are the names of the successful candidates who have passed their {final examinations at Laval Ald.Kennedy said he desired information as to the way the city had been going on with the work on the east end depot. He had heard that the work should have been done by the C.P.R.From what he had read in the newspapers it certainly looked as if there was something wrong. He also wanted to know where the money had come from to pay the men who had been working there.Had the Finance Committee voted money in a proper manner for it ?The city surveyor said that no money had been voted for the work and that the men's wages had been paid by the Road Department.‘It is strange how some people manage tor get money from the city,” said Ald.Keunedy, angrily.Mr.St.George further explained that all along he had been opposed to the work going on.The people at the time were clamoring for work and so it had been started. Before the work was started the city should have had a proper agreement with the C.P.R.and have known just how much it was going to contribute towards it.He had written several times to the Road Committee, but the work had gone on all the same.About c¢ight thousand dollars had been paid out on the work. The C.P.R., according to contract, was to have done the excavating under the bridge when the ground was handed over to them.So far as he could remember Ald.Kennedy said that he had never voted for the work going cn.It was very queer that money could be got to be paid out on this job when there were urgent works for which not a cent could be got.‘ Something, I tell you, Is wrong, gentlemen.’ The only reference that could be found in the minutes to the giving out of the work was an entry on Dec.15, 1894, which stated that ‘ the contract for the excavating, tearing down, etc., required for the iron superstructure of the Noire Dame street bridge," had been given to Messrs.Madore & Frechette as a continuation of their contract for the Berri street tunnel.Ald.Prefontaine said there was nothing crooked about the paying out of the money for the work. Some time ago money had heen voted for the construction of “the depot and he supposed the money paid for wages had been taken out cf it.Ald.Kennedy thought the aldermen were too pliant towards the C.P.R.Ald.Prefontaine said he had done nothing wrong and those who thought he had could go to court and prove it.He had done what he could to get the C.P.R.to take up the work.He would do the best he could to arrive at an understanding about the work with the C.P.R.It was decided to refer the whole matter to the city attorney and ask his opinion about it.— ¥ THE COUNCIL Songstresses of Scotland.” before the bers of the Caledonlan Society in St.Andrew’s parlor. The ex-vice-president, Mr.Robert Reid, occupied the chair.Mrs.Ems- lle traced in a very interesting manner the pedigree of Scottish song in the female line from the time of Mary Queen of Scots down to some of the poetesses of the present day. While necessarily short, owing to the ground to be travelled over, her criticisms of the various writers passed in review were concise and discerning. The rendering of l.ady Nairn’'s quaint old-world song of ‘The Twa Doos.” was especially appreciated by the audinece. At the.close of the lecture, Mr.J.W.Hannah.Mr.E.Bain and Mr.J.Macfarlane contributed some pertinent remarks on the subject, after which a hearty vote of thanks was accorded by the society to Mrs.Emslie for her able paper.M'GILL NORMAL SCHNOL MISSIONARY SOCIETY.The regular monthly meeting of the Me- Gill Normal School Missionary Society was held on Friday evening in the Normal School.‘India.’ had been chosen as the topic for the evening.Very interesting and instructive papers were given by Miss N.Green, Miss A.Booth and Mrs.Dawson.secretary of the Woman's Auxiliary. The secretary, Mr.Jordan, then read a paper which had been prepared for the society by his brother, Mr.W.F.Jordan.for several years a missionary in Guzerat and Bombay. As facts given by an eye-witness, have their interest enhanced, so the sufferings of our Indian brothers, their need of Christ, and thelr readiness to be taught about him, seemed more interesting and real as the words of one who has recently dwelt among them, and preached in their villages were heard. The meeting was closed with singing. There is a misslonary spirit working in the Normal School this year, and three at least of the students have their eye on foreign flelds of labor, while many others will go forth determined to make the respective schools of which they become teachers, centres of active home missionary work.CHINESE SUNDAY SCHOOL SEHOLARS.Knox Church can boast of one of the largest Chinese Sunday-schools in the city; it was established by Dr.Thomson, missionary, some two months ago, and the average attendance of scholars is from ninety to a hundred. The school opens at half- past seven, and closes at nine, and as evidence of the warm interest that is taken in the work, every Sunday evening after the church service is over, the Rev.Mr.Fleck, followed by a large part of his congregation, fiock into the school and help in teaching. The Sunday-school room is large and pleasant, and provided with every convenience in the way of chairs, tables, ete.The pupils appear to enjoy their lessons, and the teachers, who are truly interested, cannot help but find pleasure in teaching scholars who are so eager to be taught.Of all foreign people that come to our country the Chinese are probably the most anxious to learn the English language. It seems almost as if they are asking for the bible.Y.M.C.A.JUNIORS.Last night was Juniors night at the Association Building. They were everywhere and anywhere. For the time being the building was theirs. They turned out in force, bringing with them their mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters.Over 450 people were present leaving few vacant seats. The occasion was the closing entertainment mem- of their social work for the season, AD alaborate and entertaining pragramme had been gotten up.Mr.Chas.Kelly, a whole entertainment in himself, captivated the boys with his songs and guitar solos; Mr.A.C.Wurtelle, with his musical glasses, and Mr.Aspinall, with his concertina.secured vociferous encores. The juniors themselves took down the house with thelr horse and floor pyramids, bar bell drill and bo- hunkus chair drill, showing the careful training they had secured in the gymnasium. But as the boys would say, what ‘took the cake' was the kazoo band specially gotien up for the occasion. No two instruments were alike. There was the kazoo six feet long and from that right down to the diminutive sized, all gaily decorated with the association colors. The association certainly do the square thing for their junior members as was verv evident at last night's entertainment. They deserve the hearty support and co-operation of every parent in Montreal.Under no better influences can they place their boys.ROYAL Rev.Rabbi De Sola officiated in the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue, and preached in the morning from the, text, ‘It is the night upon which the Eter-! nal observed his promise to bring them forth from Egypt; this is that night dedi-! cated to the Eternal, to be observed by; all the children of Israel throughout their.generations.” God had promised Abraham to emancipate his descendants at the end of tour hundred years, but would he have made that promise had he not known that they would be worthy of redemption 7 The Talmud taught that, among other reasons, the Israelites had merited redemption because they had not changed their names and their language, because they had preserved their national characteristics. They had remembered Joseph's dying assurance that God would surely deliver them, and therefore they had not allowed themseives to be absorbed by the Egvptians.Their refusal to listen to Mores had been but temporary, and it was a very natural consequence of their ‘bitterness of spirit and cruel bondage.’ Rabbi De Sola made an impassioned appeal to his congregation to emulate the example of their ancestors, and to preserve their dist'netive and venerable religious institutions from modern innovations in the guise of reforms. Thus would they render themselves worthy of thelr glorious past, and of their yet more glorious future. The services in the McGill College avenue synagogue were conducted by Rabbi Friedlander, and the sacred edifice was crowded.Rabbi Rosaner officiated in the Cadieux street synagogue.Rabbi Veld conducted the services in the Temple Emanu-EIl, in accordance with the reformed ritual.a Ce PHARMACEUTICAL EXAMINATIONS.The preliminary Board of Examiners of the Pharmaceutical Association of the Province of Quebec
