Pelletier has given notice of resolutions to that effect. This action on the government's part ts generally approved. It is now stated that the treasurer will not deliver his budget speech before next special convocation was held at Trinity University yesterday morning, at which the degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred on the Rev.J.G.Lewis, rector of the Church of the Incarnation, New York.Dr.Lewis is an old Torontonian, having been at one time curate of St.Alban’s Cathedral. At the Ministerial Association meeting yesterday morning, the Rev.C.A.Eaton, of the Bloor Street Baptist Church, read a paper on the Pope in politics, in the course of which he toqle occasion to refer to the school settlement, and to pay a high tribute to the Hon.Mr.Laurier.He condemned the interference in politics by the Ronfan Cathoiic Church, saying the Pope was in politics only for what he could get out of it.It is rumored the Jesuit Order is anxious to eecure control of one of the Roman Catholic churches here.At present the Jesuits have no establishment in Toronto, the only prominent member of the order in the city being the Rev.Father Ryan of St.Michael's Cathedral. At present only two orders are established bere, the Basilians, a French corporation, which has charge of St.Basil's, on St Joseph street; and the Redemptorists, who are installed at St.Patrick’s Church. If possible, the Jesuits will secure one of the west end churches, or may even erect one of their own.The brewers and distillers of the province are now in the fight, and are making arrangements for a general meeting to be held in Toronto for the purpose of discussing the Liquor License act, and appointing a deputation to wait upon the Hen.A.S.Hardy, Premier, and the members of his government, and Nov.30.—When the Claims Commission met this morning, the Hon.Don Dickinson stated that they had already filled answers in the first case, and others would be put in as soon as they were got ready for the printers.Mr.Dickinson went on to state that he had filed a motion to dismiss clalm No.26, being for $62,827.12 for costs in the ‘Sayward ’ case. The ground of the motion was that the costs were Incurred by the Canadian Government and not by individuals, and, therefore, the claim did not come before the Commissioners within the terms of the Convention. In case his friends opposite intended to press the claim, he would ask an adjournment pecding the answer from his government.Mr.Peters expressed surprise that the motion should be made, and said he certainly intended to press the claim. The sum named was actually paid by the Canadian Government, which, so far as the tribunal was concernzd, was by the British Government.Mr.Dickinson stated that such a claim as this had n” more right to be put in than -would a claim for the costs of either government before the Parts tribunal. The costs incurred by an individual might be put in, but not the cost incurred by efther governments. They were excluded by the terms of the Convention.Mr.Peters was satisfied to let the matter stand over, and further proposed that judgment be delayed in the ‘ Black Diamond '.and
