— A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF FRANCE.Paris, Feb, 24.—The famous Cathedral of Notre Dame was the centre of much excitement to-day, which later took the ‘form of a disorderly manifestation against former President Loubet, Crowds assembled in the Place Notre Dame expecting the authorities would come and take an inventory of the chapter house and a force of 150 policemen patrolled the surrounding streets expecting trouble within the edifice, but as the authorities did not attempt an inventory this did not oceur.The crowds outside gradually increased in numbers, however, and finally several hundred persons marched to the Rue Dante, where M.Loubet.has taken up his residence.I'he manifestants passed before the house of the former President, uttering insulting cries against him.The police then droven off the crowd, which, however.reassembled and returned only to be dispersed again.A slight afiray occurred bettveen the police and the manifestants as the latter sought to return once more, and a dozen arrests were made.the explanation of the movement against M.Loubet is that the bill for the separation of Church and State became a law during his administration.Inventories were made at several Paris churches to-day.At the aristocratic church of St.Thomas d’Aquinas, the prefect of police, with a strong body of men, had to force his way through a long passage into the sacristy owing to the resistance offered by a number of the parishioners.The priests then refused to hand over the keys, and the prefect caused the sates to be broken open.An ventory of the property was then made.Ten arrests were made, General Reca- mior being among those taken into cus tody.MONTREAL CITY BILL CLAUSES REGARDING THE RECORDERS ADOPTED AND fire and life insurance representatives from Montreal and Quebec had an interview this forenoon with the Premier and the Provincial Treasurer to protest against the proposed increase of the provincial tax upon their business in this province.Among the delegates were Messrs.Christmas, Parkins, Brown, and about forty others.Senator Dandurand and Messrs.Claxton and Paul Martineau accompanied the deputation as counsel and severally explained its object.Lhe Lreas- urer thought that the insurance interest, which did a very large business in this province, should contribute more thin they were doing to ite revenue, He pointed out that since 1882 their taxation had not been increased, and that they had not much reason to complain at being asked now to pay a |ttle more than they had for nearly twenty-five years past.He showed that in Thost ot ; the adjacent New England States, which were very much in line with this province, gimilar taxation was impos-d won the companies and they did not object.Several of the delegates, howeyer, claimed that in those states as well as in Ontario to-day the companies were taxed not on their gross, but their met premiums, and that they were also free from municipal taxation, while here every little municipality was seeking to levy upon them for doing busitews within their bounds.In reply to another dele gation the Treasurer stated that mutual LOST AND A MILLION DOLLARS DAMAGE DONE — WATER SUPPLY WAS WHOLLY INADEQUATE TO COPE WITH THE FLAMES.Moncton, N.B., Feb.25—The extensive workshope ot the Intercolonial Railway here were laid waste by fire last night, and a loss of over a million dol lars entailed.These shops gave employment to about 1,000 men.‘Lhe fire orignated in the paint shop, a wooden building, about 600 feet long, nearest the railway station.‘When first seen, about nine o'clock, the fire was confined to a limited area in the west end of the shop, and it might then have been extinguished, but, unfortunately, there was à delay in getting the water turned on from the railway system, and when 1t was available only a miserable stream could be got, There was &carcely a breath of air, otherwise everything in the yard would have been swept clean, and a large part of the town might have shared the same fate.Owing to the inflammable nature of the contents in the paint shop, the tre spread with lightning rapidity, and soon the whole immense building was a seetn- ing caldron.So rapidly did the flames spread that it was impossible to save many of the contents, and a dozen or more passenger cars were burned.including the private car of the general manager, Mr.Pottinger.It was reported that the Governor-General’s cat also was burned, but this proved to be untrue.The adjoining building was the car repair shop, also of wood, about 600 feet long and 100 feet wide, and this, too, was soon a mass of flames.The cars in this building were mostly saved.The next building, used for car construction, was of brick, and it was thought at first a stand might be made here, but the most strenuous efforts were of no avail, and the woodwork of the interior soon commenced to blaze fiercely.This car shop was divided into sections by steel doors, but the heat was so intense that these twisted and bent an every shape.They were effective to the extent of saving a section of about 200 feet.The fire spread in other directions, however, and the large brick boiler shop was next attacked and totally destroyed, with much valuable machinery and contents.The buildings saved were the erecting shops.mechanical superintendent's offices, blacksmith shop, oil warehouse and the new roundhouse, the latter being one of the most modern struec- tures in Canada, with a capacity for 75 locomotives.The origin of the fire is a mystery, as the shops closed down at four o'clock in the afternoon.It was at first thought the fire had not been attended by lose of life or serious accident, but this unfortunately proved not to be the case.Early this morning Abraham Jones, painter, was reported missing, and the fear that he might have been overcome in one of the burned buildings proved only too true.Jones arrived at the scene of the fire a few minutes after it was discovered, and was seen to enter the paint shop, which was then a mass of flames.‘This was the last seen of him, but in the excite- ' ment nothing was said of the incident until Jones failed to turn up at his boarding house, when the worst was feared.Ag soon as the ruins had sufficiently cooled a search was made, and about ten o'clock this morning a small patch of charred bones, not more than a shoveliul in all, was found about thirty feet from the end of the building at: which the deceased entered, though on the opposite | being double side of the paint shop, tracked.Jones had been in the habit of keeping a small stock of tobacco in his box, and though he spoke to no person, as far as can be ascertained, it 18 thought he entered for the purpose of saving his little store.Search was made of the place where Jones had his box, lt is not known whether Jones reached the box or not, but the appearances were that the lock had been turned, but that Jones was driven off by the flames and smoke before being able to get his possessions and was overcome.No evidence was taken, and the inquest adjourned until to-morrow night, when the coroner states that a full enquiry will be started to throw light on the origin of the tire.Mr.Pottinger, the general manager, when seen by a correspondent, said he did not think many men would be thrown out of employment, as arrangements would be made to continue work temporarily as far as possible, and he did not doubt that the work of rebulding the permanent shops would be commenced as soon as possible.He thought the loss would be fully a million dollars, possibly more.Owing to the confusion that prevailed, and the great extent of the shops and yards, there being over thirty miles of track in the Moncton yard, it has been impossible to get exact information as to the details of losses, but the following 18 gleaned from official sources: Paint shop, wood, 500 feet long, 75 feet wide; car repair shop, wood, 500 feet long, 75 feet i wide; car shops, brick, 400 feet long, ‘5 feet wide; boiler shop, brick, 150 feet long 50 feet wide; storeroom, mechanical superintendent’s office, master mechanic’s shop, in which a lot of valuable papers were lost, also a lot of valuable patterns over the boiler shop; main engine shop, brass foundry, brick, 50 by 75 feet.The plant burned includes a 250 horse power engine in the main power house and a 150 horse power engine in the boiler shop.There are many theories as to the origin of the fire, but none can be accepted as reliable.One report is that it may have caught from an overheated stove in a car.James Moodie, locomotive engineer, and Clifford White, roundhouse toreman, who were among the first on the scene, say that as near as they could tell from the view they had through a window, the fire had its origin between à car and the wall, about 100 feet from the west end of the shop.It then appeared to be running up the wall in what seemed to be cotton or other very inflammable material, and before they could get to,the spot or do anything, had spread into quite a conflagration.One theory which finds considerable ta- vor is that the fire was the result of spontaneous combustion.Mr.Joughins, mechanical superintendent, when seen by a correspondent, said he could give no idea as to the origin of the fire, but confirmed the genera! manager's ptatement that the loss would be ai, least one million dollars.He could give no information as to the plans for the future until the arrival of the Minister of Railways, Mr.Emmerson, and the Deputy Minister, Mr.Butler, who are now on the way, and will arrive to-morrow morning.' ; All the information obtainable mdi- cates that the military measures at the palace were only precautionary and were taken because of the widely circulated rumors that there would be trouble here on Saturday.The finding of ths package of dynamite outside palace gates, which is somewhat mysterious, probably also caused uneasiness, as the court has been nervous ince the outrage in the Pekin railway station on Sept.24, of last year, when a missile was exploded inside a private car on the train carrying one of four missions ordered abroad to study foreign political methods, killing four persons and wounding {twenty others.The reports of trouble within the palace cannot be corroborated, but they probably are founded on gossip, for which Pekin 1s always a hotbed, or are based on the strengthening of the palace guards, The police to-night appeared without therr riftes.The city was never quieter.There has not been the slightest sign of feeling shown towards foreigners nor have the foreigners here any apprahen- sion.Several parties from the foreign legations are taking advantage of the mild weather to maxe long - xcursioms into the country.The canard that Saturday he been designated the day for disturban & appears to have emanated from the ' anted States.The telegrams describing the military preparations of the United States Government for trouble in China have been widely published in the Chinese newspapers and are considered as decidedly unfriendly.¥ London, Feb.26.—The correspondent at Pekin vf the ‘Trmbun:' says that since the reported appearance of Chinese bandits in Tsinwantae, the Germans and French have been kept at arms at Shan hai kwan, Tsin Wantaofi and Tong Shan, whike the Germans are patrolling the villages with orders to shoot all suspicious Chinese.The Germain officers, who formerly dined at the hotel at Shan hei- kwan, the correspondent adds, are now confined to barra:ks after nightfall.DAMAGES FOR STREET ACCIDENT.In a case of Brouillet vs.Gendron, the plaintiff claimed $1,000 damages for bodily injuries through having b:en run I over by defendant’s horse and waggon, and Judge Curran on Saturday maintained the action to the extent of $500.THE MONTREAL DAILY EEE INTEREST TO OF x WITNESS WOMEN.res’ ) TL PA GA a! = pourri EE ESS pitt 2 PES AS rer End) JPEN ie ge A =.& soy ET EUX “ HITR SERGE COSTUMES.White serge costumes promise to be great favorites next summer, for already more have been made for wear at the southern resorts than for several years.They consist, generally, of coat and skirt suits, and they are made in numerous styles.Some have long, loose coats, others long, tight-fitting coats, and still others, and these are the most popular, have Eton, bollero or short loose box-coats.Skirts are plaited or circular, and the suits are trimmed with wide and narrow white braids.black velvet, colored silk, heavy lace.fancy buttons, etc.The suits may be elaborate or simple as one prefers, and according to what purposes they are to be used for.For instance, if intended for morning wear on the beaches, tennis courts, etc., simple suits are best, but if wanted for country club teas, yachting parties.afternoon driving and similar occasions, elaborate gowns are more suitable.A smart mode] for a gown of the latter description is shown hy the accompanying illustration.;
