in the four-story factory building of P.J.Harney & Company, shortly before seven o'clock this morning, eleven persons were injured and fourteen buildings destroyed by fire, with a total loss roughly estimated at $450,000, Of these structures.sis were dwellings, one the railway station of the Boston and Maine Company, and the others mostly occupied by shoe manufacturing concerns. That no lives were lost or more people injured is attributed to the fact that the explosion occurred before the factory operatives had assembled. In the Harney factory there were not more than twenty hands inside the building when the boiler blew up at about five minutes of seven.Twenty minutes later there would have been six hundred employees at their machines. The flames spread with great rapidity, driven hy a south-east gale, and swept through the district in West Lynn, in the vicinity of Allen and Charles streets.A general alarm summoned help from Boston, Salem and Saugus, and after two hours of fighting the flames were thought to be under control. The cause of the explosion was not known.PAPAL CONSISTORY AMONG THE APPOINTMENTS ARE THE NAMES OF SEVERAL CANADIANS.Rome, Dec.6.—At the secret cons BY MR.JUSTICE LA: FONTAINE.An action of damages for alleged slander, in a case of Kent vs.Ardagh, has been dismissed by Mr.Justice Lafontaine, the Court holding that the statement complained of and admitted, was not slanderous. In a case of Dame Spooner vs.Kearns the plaintiff claimed $1,000 on account of a criminal assault on her minor daughter.and the Court granted her $100.In a case of Presseau vs.the Town of Lachine, the action was dismissed.he plaintiff cizimed $1,388 damages.holding the Town of Lachine responsible for the loss which he suffered in a fire that totally destroyed his house. The grounds of action were: 1.The late arrival of the fire brigade, owing to the apparatus nearest to the fire starting off in the wrong direction.2.One of the hydranis was found frozen.3.The nozzle of another hydrant was choked with dirt and stones, and the hydrant was idle until the nozzle was fixed. On the first point, the Court found that the mistake was due to a high wind, which prevented the alarm whistle from being clearly heavd. On: the second point, the Court found that the hydrant was frozen and iad been like that for some days, and that the defendant was guilty of negligence on this point, but only about two minutes were wasted by the hydrant buing frozen and no serious consequences followed for plaintiff on this point.Un the other point, the Court found that.even if true, such accidents happen frv- quently and cannot be imparted to neg: : hgence. The cvidence further showed that the fire took from the stovepij® in Presseau's house, which was very flimsily constructed, and that nothing could have saved the house, which was a mass of flames at the time the first alarm was given. In a case of Noar vs.the Canadian Pacific Railway (‘ompany, which was a claim for $200 damages on account of injuries received, the action was also dus- missed, the Court holding that the plaintiff was himself guilty of gross neglect and was the sufferer by his own fault.Proof established that plaintifi could have avoided any accident by showing ordinary care.—_——— THE COAL FAMINE MONTREAL BUSINESS MEN FEEL HUMILIATED BY OUISIDE 1N- TERVENTION BEING SOUGHT.—__ One of the aspeets of the threatened! coal tamine in Alberta und Saskatchewan, which bas aroused great indignation among Montreal business men, 1s wha: they describe as the humiliating figuve cut by the government in sending a representative Lo chase an American labor leader, Mr.John Mitchell, from place to plate, te beg of him to kindly allow the mines at Lethbridge again to return to work. The continuation of the strike in the new provinces is due, it is said, to the interference of United States leaders.and a strong sentiment is growing in Canadian commercial and labor circles, that the time has arrived when such strike difficultics as exist in the west should be settled without the assistance of foreign advice.Failing to reach an agreement with the striking miners, representatives from the new provinces appealed to the federal authorities tc interfere in the matter, and Mr.King, the Deputy Minister of Tabor, was sent to Lethbridge to try and bring about a settlement with the miners. His efforts, however, failed and Premier of Saskatchewan, it was decid ed to arrange a meeting with Mr.Mitchell at Minneapolis. On arriving at that place the Canadians were informed that Mr, Mitchell had Kr for Indianapolis and they immediately followed the pres: dent of the Miners” Union, in order to} place the situation before him and plead tor his intervention. On ‘change during the past few days prominent business men have denounced the whole procecdings as quite humiliating to Canada, presenting as it did the spectacle of the Canadian nation bowing before a United States labor leader, eu- deavoring to secure his services in set tling à purely Canadian matter.Mr.Charles R.Hosmer, in speaking of the incident this morning, said that it was all very well to fly the Union Jack throughout Manitoba and the new provinces, but why seek foreign interfer ence in matters that pertain strictly to labor in this country?Mr.Hoam-r ex- presed the opinion that the time has arrived when Canadians should settle their own internal affairs, especially within labor circles, and that it was indeed unfortunate that we should be compelled to have to look to outsiders for their advice and influence, BRITISH COLUMBIA FRUIT EXHIBIT AWARDED GOLD MEDAL IN LONDON—OTHER AWARDS.Viroria, B.C., Dec.5.-—-A cable from London was received by the
