Victoria Hall by Mayor and Town Representatives The bowling season in Westmount will be formally opened this evening at Vie toria Hall by Mayor Knox on the two new alleys that have just been completed, and equipped with every form of modern apparatus dear to the heart of the bowler. In addition to these alleys there are new pool and billiard rooms, the latter being supplied with four large tables of the latest design, and both fitted up in the most approved style. The citizens of Westmount have always been interested in the promotion of clean sport, and it is with that in view that the town had granted the use of a portion of the hall to the West- mount Amateur Athletic Association.Sc far as hockey is concerned, tbe W.A.A.A.proposes to have its players strictly amateur, and cre co-operating with McGill to further promote the amateur spirit in athletics. The intermediate und junior teams have made arrangements to hold practices on the Vie- toria Rink, and it is rumored that they will have some surprises in their ime- ups.As already stated, however, thoy will be of purely amateur status. The general committee of the associa tion is working hard on the association club house and grounds at Notre Dame de Grace, and pending uoforeseen hap- pevings everything is expected to be m readiness rvarly next season.Under the able coaching of Mr.C.B.Powter, the various basket ball teams are constantly at practice and the senior team hopes to land the city and district championship. The gymnasium at Vie- toria Hall is being further equipped, and new apparatug secured as its necessity arises. It is expected that many of West- mount’s residents will be on hand tonight tQ see the opening of the svas~n and encourage the young men in tbeir various sports.Much of the success attending the installation of these alleys is duc to Mr.W.Muir Edwards, president of the club.and the Messrs.Andrews.CHURCH HOCKEY LEAGUE.An Effort on foot to Establish Friendly Rivaly ;Among Chuches 1 The city churches have entered with zest into nearly every form of athlatics, and the suggestion now comes from Taylor Church that a hockey league should be organized among the cLurches for tbe cominz scaso»m- The object sought in the formation of such a league is to spread abroad a love for ell athletics, and particularly this form of winter sport. It is thought that apart from the great physical benefits that would accrue from such a league, the representatives of the various churches may become more intimately acquainted, aud au interdenomitational, rather Lbat a denomi- Dational, spirit, will be inculcated. Those churches wishing to be more particularly informed as to the date of the first meeting should comnuvicate with Mr.G.H.Watson, 571 Esplanade avenue, who will be pleased to furnish all information required.HOCKEY AT KINGSTON Kingston Ont., Dec.11.—The Junior City Hockey League has been formed.Four teams enter, 'A’ and ‘B,’ St.George's, Re- glopolis with and against each other without endangering th status of those who have no desire to accept monéy for playing games 1% is true that there are few hockey, Jacrosse or football players in Canada (wert!: looking at) who are mot paid for their services, but, nevertheless, it would b- unfair to those few to bar them from athletics smply because others set the coin.It was als a sensible thing to declare that the men who were profvs- sionai should be openly declared so, should no?be permitted to masquerade as amateurs or to delude the public. In years past players got credit for doing a good turn for their town or city.when, as a matter of fact, they had nothing coming to them.In future, in hockey, at least.it is to be expected that when a man is a professional he will be known as one, and will only get credit to the extent to which he earns the money that is paid him.’ SIX DAYS’ RACE.New York.Dec, 12—"Try as they will, Walthour and Bedell seem unable to make up the lap they are behind the other twelve teams that remain dn the bicycle race at Madison Square (Garden. They are till confident of gaining the distance, however .At 7 o'clock to-day the twelve leading teams had scored 1,019 miles and 7 laps, and Walthour and Bedell one lap less. This is nearly 74 miles behind the record of 1.793 miles and 1 lap, made by Miller and Wallex¥n 1899.LESTER PATRICK ILL.Expects, However, to Get Into Shape for First Game a Leater Patrick, the great rover of the Stanley Cup holders, contracted a heavy cold during the first practice, and has since been unable to appear with his team mates on the ice, When seen vesterday by a “Witness reporter he expressed himself as not feel ing too well but was confident that le could round into trim before the first game would be played.Patrick is one of those who can get into condition at short notice so that his local admirers may rest assured that 11 sible at all pe will tigure in the opening game played by his team.lt will be regretted.however.that he should be thus handicapped at the beginning ot the scason's work.OTTAWA TEAM'S PRACTICE Ottawa, Dec.11.—To-night's practice could scarcely be
