if so on whose authority and at whose expense, and was the government prepared to give bonds for their future good conduct.Mr.Lake will repeat his inquiry at a later day.Wilfrid Laurier observed that it would be a difficult matter to give bonds for the good behaviour of these people.BRITISH COLUMBIA FISHERIES CONTROL.Mr.Ralph Smith (Nanaimo) was informed that Mr.Bastedo, who was sent to the Pacific coast to negotiate an understanding with the Province of British Columbia in regard to the control of the fisheries has now returned to Ottawa.Certain claims which the province had made were now under consideration by the government.DEATHS BY EXPLOSION ON TRANSCONTINENTAL.Col.Talbot commented om the death of nine men on the Transcontinental Railway in Bellechasse, by prematurz explosions, and asked if the government was doing anything to prevent such accidents. The Hon.Mr.Graham reiterated his former declaration to the effect that he was attempting to secure a remedy. But his inquiry to date had only gome to show that the deaths on the Transcontinental in proportion to the amount o° work done, was smaller than on any other railway ever built in America.JUDGE CASSELS AND MARINE INQUIRY.The Minister of Marine and Fisheries announced that Messrs.George H.Watson, K.C., of ‘’loronto, and J.L.Perron, K.C., of Montreal, had beea appointed at the request of Mr.Justice Cassels, as counsel to assist him in the inquiry into the Marine Department. As to the three suspended officials of his Department, Mr.Brodeur samvunce1 that the suspension of Mr.A.W.Uwen, accountant, had been relieved.Mr Owen had applied for leave of absence and for superagnuation.111s application for leave had been granted, but no or- der-incouncil for his superannuation had yet been passed. As to Judge Cas- sels’s inquiry he did not know whether its sittings would be held openly or behind closed doors. That was a matter for the commissioner himself to uecide. The balance of the sitting was taken up with the discussion of th: » «Ff Mr.Fisher's bills amending the Meats and Canned Foods Act, the Inspection and Sale Act, and the Canned Goods Act.The attendance of members throughout both the afternoon and evening sittings of the House was very slim, many of the members not having yet return:d from their Easter holidays. The Prime Minister was in his place, however, ail day, as well as the leader of the Opposition, who has returned from his visit to New York much benefited by the change. The Canned Goods Act is an obsolete statute which has never been put into force and which is now superseded by the Meats and Canned Foods law of last session. The latter, however, applies only to export and to interprovincial trade, and the point was strongly urged by the Oppositnon that the repeal of the old statute left the country without any pure food law as regards local trade. The Minister of Agriculture replied that Sir | | Toronto, 23 RR Yo the duty of local inspection lay rather with the provinces.WESTERN LAND SALES Ottawa, April 22.—A return was tabled in the House yesterday by the Minister of the Interior which shows that the Dominion Government received since 1896 from the sales of land in Manitoba, $1,075,451 in cash, and $209 - 475 in scrip; in Alberta, $1,455,715 mn cash, and $237,086 in scrip; in Saskatchewan, $1,743,753 in cash, and $158,303 in scrip.: teense THE DOUKHOBOR’S RELIGION |.A LECTURE BY DR.J.T.REID WILL BE GIVEN IN THE Y.M.C.A.TO-MORROW EVENING.—— The primitive Christianity of the Doukhobors, and the manner in which it - is applied in their daily life, will be described in a lecture under the auspices of the Vegetarian Society of Canada, which wild be given in the large hall of the Y M.C.A, Dominion square, at 8 o'clock to-mor- row evening, by Dr.J.T.Reid, of Westmount, who for some considerable time lived among the Douk- - hobors of the west as a medical missionary.| Dr.Reid began his cottage hospital work amongst the new settlers of western Canada in the year 1900.This work was at first darried on as a medical mission under the auspices of the Church.Believing that he was expected to do this medical service to men merely as a means to an end, and feeling that such service to suffering humanity is per se the highest possible end, more especially amongst the Doukhobors, who are already a Christian people, he desired freedom from the jurisdiction of the more conservative men of the east, who, although acting from sincere motives, he says, did not understand conditions in the west.He then requested and obtained permission from Lady Minto to carry on the work under Her Excellency’s patronage. Before returning to resume his work in the west, Dr.Reid makes this statement in order to remove certain misunderstandings which have arisen concerning the relationship between his work and the Church. He has studied the Doukhobortsi people in their own village life, and is taking advantage of the opportunity to defend them against the prejudices of some Canadians who do not understand them.Dr.J.T.Reid.The chief motive of Dr.Reid’s lecture }.is to give a correct portrayal of the primitive Christianity of the Doukhobors as it is applied in their social, economic and religious systems, CONFESSES TO MURDER —_— ! June, are likely to ceaze much earlier than usual this year, and indeed there has been talk of re-shipping scme of the produce back to the Antipodes, where drought and extreme heat have so curtailed the production that there is a doubt whether the make from now till the end of the season will be lurge enonglh to supply the home demand.’ ‘The demand for cheese is mot nearly as active as usual.Bacon, which has been so cheap has been largely used as a substitute, and as the hone production of cheese was very heavy, there has been less inquiry for colonial makes. The English market is generally very ready io take our first offerings, but their bids to-day are considerably below the cost price of the cheese here, anc it doesn't look as though we would be able to do much business at the opening of the seavon this year.’ $40,000,000 FOR THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILWAY ~ The management of the Pennsylvania Railroad will, it is expected, announce today the sale of $40,000,000 bonds. These bonds will bear interest at the rate of 4 percent per anñum and will run for a leng term of years. The financing will be most advantageous from the standpoint of terms that has been made by any railway in several years.Entire issue will be underwritten by a syndicate of bankers which will doubtless be headed by Kuhn, Loeb & Co.The proceeds of these bonds will finance all requirements of Pennsylvania for next year to come and owing tu Jew rate of the money is likely to stimulate improvement work along the entire Pennsylvania system. It was learned yesterday afternoon that a company bad been incorperateé in Ru- j rope to bring out the issue of $40,000,600 of first mortgage 4 percent bonds, which the Pennsylvania Railroad Company is expected to announce soon.It is understood that Kuhn, Loeb & Company will have cherge of the issue, and it is reported that the bonds will be secured by a first mortgage on the company's New York terminal properties.MEETING OF THE MARCONI WIRELESS OF AMERICA ——— Mr.John D.Oppe, manager of the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of Canada, has been appcinted a director of the Marconi Telegraph Company of America al the annual meeting of the latter corporation held in New York city yesterday aiter- noen.According to reports, the statement presented was highly satisfaetôry, and mot- withstanding the general lusiness depression the Marconi Wireless has enjoyed a profitable year. The company has given a splendid service, and the ‘Wireless’ is now a factor in the navigation systema of the world. After discucring considerable routine business relative to the welfare of the Marconi the following officers and directors were elected for thie ensuing year:- President, John 1.Griggs; first vice-pre- sident, Gugliemo O.Marconi; second vice- president and general manager, John Bot- tomley; secret:ry, John PBottomley, trers- ‘urer, W.W.Bradfield; assistant treasurer, ‘George S.Desoura.Directors for five years: John W.Griggs, of New Jersey; John M.Gype, of Montreal, and James W.Townsend, of New Yorki CATTLE MARKETS.Chicago, April 22.—Cattle receipts 16,000; for good, steady; for others, weak.Beeves, $4.60 to $7.20; Texans, $4.50 to $5.50; westerns, $4.60 to $5.50; stockers and feeders, $3.25 to $5.20; cows and heifers, $2.25 to $6.30; calves, $1.50 to $6.50.Hogs, receipts, 24,000, weak to fc lower; light, $5.30 to $5.80; mixeq, $5.36 to $5.8245; Heavy, $5.30 to $5.50; rough, $5.20 to $5.50; pigs, $4.15 to $5.50; bulk of sales, $5.60 to 6.75.; Sheep, receipts, 15,000, weak to 10 cents lower; native, $4.90 to $6.60; western, at 34.80 to $6.60; yearlings, $6.40 to $7.10; and lambs, $6 to $7.60; western, $7 to $7.65.East Buffalo, April 22.—Cattle—Good de- mend and strong; prime steers, $6.75 to ( $7.10., Veals—Receipts, 500 head, active and steadv.Hogs—Receipts,2,600 head; slow and 10e ‘a 15c lower; heavy and mixed, $6.10; york- ers, $6.90 to $6.10, pigs, $4.50 to $5.40; roughs, $5 to $5.25; dairies, $5.75 to $6.Sheep and lambs—Receipts, 4,400 head ; stezdy; sheep, slow; lambs, active; unchanged.THE WINNIPEG WHEAT MARKET.April.May.July.Last night .107% 108 110% Opening .+.«.107 108 110 Closing .107% 30814 11034 THER .+.+.0 1078% 108% 110% ) 1015 (Lew .2 0.06 Qu De 10715 109% MUCH DEPENDS UPON WESTERN CROPS.—— Favorable Reports as to the Outlook for a Big Harvest This Year.— The outlook for the wheat harvest, to which the trade of our western provinces is very sensitive, is undoubtedly encourag: ing at this date. The wheat is in excel leut condition over the great graiu belt, and everything is in good condition The ‘bug’ scare, so potent last year, has not materialized this season, and the scientific [RPE inveetigators say that the west wili not ! be troubled with it.Late frosts may do damage, but with plentiful rains it seems likely that there will be a full average condition for the wheat during the spring months. An early and moderate spring has given the farmers a fair start with spring work. The wheat had a good start last fell, the soil is not dried out, and the farmers are pot complaining.Indeed, they seem well satisfied—and this is the basis of much of the hopefulness and resumption of confldence that reign in the West. The one problem that just now confronts the financial leaders in the provinces and possibly Manitoba is that of safe investment. The barks have found so many loans unstable, and have charged off so many bad accounts, that they are more concerned than others.Even apparently unquestioned loans have proved worthless, and the banks are refusiug many loans because of their Inability to determine what is the best security. The past few months have gone far in weedi out tbe weak borrowers, and in giving the strong a higher rating. There ought to be a better understanding now of exactly what may be expected, and a surer focting for the western financial world.TORONTO RY.EARNINGS —— The Toronto Street Railway earnings thowed a good increase last week. The earnings were: Sunday .$5,068 Inc.$ 476 Monday .+2 es 9,119 Inc.142 Tuesday .9,138 Inc.12 Wednesday .89,3 Inc.297 Thursday .10,643 Inc.1,944 Friday .8,510 Dec.4nn Saturday .11,627 Inc.920 Total .$63,338 Inc.$3,853 EEE PROFESSIONAL CARDS — ADVOORTES, BARRISTERS, 2a ELLIOTT & DAVID, Adveeates, Barristers and Selicisers Commiesionors for all the Provinces And for the States of Massachusetts and Now York Sanaa Life Buliding, 189 $t, James 32 Henry J.Elliott, L A.David, ===} SMITH, MARKEY & SKINNER, ADVOCATES, BARRISTERS, etc.METROPOLITAN BUILDING, 179 8T, JAMES STREET, ROBT.C.8MITH, K.C., FRED.H.MARKEY, K.0 WALDO W.SKINNER, WILLIAM G.PUGSLEY, F.8.MACLENNAN, K.C.Advocate, Earrister and Goliciter, New York Life Building, Montreal Tel.Main 4708 Tel Main 393) PATTERSON & BROWN.Advocates, Barristers & Solloitors, CITY & DISTRICT BANK BUILDING, 180 St.James street, Montreal.W.Patterson, M.A., LL B.B.N.Brown, B.A.,BO.L R.RINFRET,B.Sc.Civii Engineer (McGill Diploma) Dominion and Provincial l.and Surveyer WATERWORKS Eto,, SURVEYA No.260 ST.JAMES ST, Montreal MARRIAGE LICENSES lOsUTD BY JOHN M.M.DUF'F, 197 8%.James Street, 49 Crescent Street PATENT ATTORNEYS.pa {ti LE 1 We solicit the business of Manufacturers, Engineers and others who realize the advisatit ity of having their Patent business transe tew by Experts Preliminaryadvice free.Cha: gat moderate Ouz Inventor's Adviser sent request.Marion & Marion, New York Life Montreal + end Washington D.C.U.S.A.A l'ENS, TRADE MARKS, ETO C.C.COUSINS Patent Sellcitor.Ruite 506 N.Y.Life Bldg Tel.M 6894 Expert personal attention.F ETHERSTONHAUCH, BLACK- MORE & DENNISON, | Liv.& Lon.& Globe Bldg., Montreal, PATENTS THAT PROTECT FETHERSTONHAUGH & Co.Chas.W.Taylor, B.Sc, late Examiner Canadian Patent Office.CANADA LIFE BUILDING, - MONTREAL OWEN N.EVANS PATENTS AND TRADE MARKS Marohants Bank Bullédinæ Meontress, ee" .Financial.EDWD.T.TAYLOR & SON.Insurance Agents & Broker 3 ROOM 17 TRAFALGAR OCHAMBERS «0 Hospital 8t Tel.M2309 -— - EEL | BE fi i REL { ?if J pn .yA + +A LE PR EE em PET ESPEN = > A TAM, og 7665 ELTA er BE TSS RTH WARREN .10 A AN INDIAN FRATRICIDE — WHERE DID HE GET THE LIQUOR?ouver, April 21.—An Indign from Soh Talat charged with the murder of his father during a family row las November, was brought to Vancouver last night from the north.According to the evidence in the hands of the police, the alleged murderer, a youth of twenty-one, quarrelled with his father while both were on a spree. The father, it 1s stated, was lying down in his shack when the son went in and started beating him with the butt of a rifle. It 18 charged that as a result of this beating the man died a few days later.NEW HAMPSHIRE REPUBLICANS.Concord, N.H., April 21.—Unpledged and uninstructed delegates to the Republican National Convention at Chicago, were elected to-day at the New Hamp- shirc Republican state convention in this city.A resolution endorsing Mr.Tutt tor President was tabled by a rising vote, only twenty-five delegates out of 763 voting for the resolution.CHILDREN'S CORNER.DOROTHY’S CIRCUS.(Nellie Josephine Ames, in the ‘Child’s Hour.) Dorothy had always lived in the city until she came to California to spend the winter with grandma and grandpa. They lived in a pretty brown bungalow up in the foothills, and Dorothy and her mamma slept on the porch every night.Dorothy thought it great fun to go to bed out of doors. She loved to look up at the stars shining t¥rough the pepper trees, and feel the cool night air on her face.In the morning the hirds woke her with their happy songs as they flew about in the trees. One morning something awoke her, and she was very sure that it was not the birds. She heard it again, and she sat up to listen. There were low trumpeting sounds, then short shrill ones, and long mooing ones; then little quick-breathed bleats, which somehow made her feel very sorry for someone. The noises came nearer and nearer, louder and faster, and Dorothy's eyes grew bigger and rounder.Once or twice she thought she heard shouts. Then she remembered—the circus. With a bounce she was in her mamma’s cot.‘Oh, mamma, mamma, she cried, throwing her arms about her mother's neck, ‘it's the elephants; they're coming right up the hill!’ Her mamma hugged her tight, and explained that it was not the circus, but a Ing drove of cattle from the ranches over in the other valley. They were tired and dusty from their long walk, and the cowboys were urging them on so as to reach the end of their journey before the sun got high. The little calves were bleating because they could not keep up with their mothers.Dorothy stood up in bed and peeped through the porch curtains, but all she could see was a cloud of dust in the street below, When she told grandpa about it he promised to take her down to the end of the street to see the next herd that passed. So, one morning soon after, when he saw the cloud of dust over beyond the Mission, he woke Dorothy, and grandma dressed her in her warm dress and cloak.for the sun was not yet up, and there was a chill fog rolling in over the mesa.By the time she was dressed Dorothy was wide awake. She heard the trumpeting and lowing, and the calls of the cowboys.‘Ah.hurry.grandpa.hurrv she cried, dancing about like a little blue bird. When they reached the foot of -he street, grandpa swung her to a seat on the limb of à sycamore tree. The noise of the cattle sounded very near, and was ten times as loud as that of the elephants.Dorothy gave a little shudder of excitement and clung to grandpa’s hand. She peeped around the tree trunk, and just as far as she could see, the strert was full of hurrving.pushing cattle, It sremed to her that there were hundreds of thousands of them. There were big red ones.and black anes, and.once in a while.a pure white one.Little spotted calves wore running about.almost beneath the feet of the excited cattle. The poor creatures looked tired and dusty, and Dorothy felt sorry for them.Ome big shepherd dog walked along in front nf the drove, he.side a cowboy, and another ane trotted along behind, keeping watch that none of the herd strayed away or lagged hohind. At the corner.the enwbovs rade back and forth, crowding the cattle together to keep them from going down the cide
