arrest of Mr.Lewis Woodman, a colporteur of the Montreal Auxiliary Bible Society in- Point St.Charles, on.the charge of peddling without a license has caused quite a little stir in religious cireles. This ‘is the first time in Montreal in which the agents of the Bible Society have been interfered with in their- laudible work.of circulating the Holy Scriptures. It is well-known that the work of this society is purely philanthropic,.and in no sense a commercial enterprise. The society being supported entirely by the voluntary contributions of its friends. In all parts of the civilized placed under arrest, and was searched by order of the officer in charge. The Bible House was.notified by phone of the arrest, and was informed that bail could be had by a deposit of twenty-flve dollars.Subsequently the License Department gave, orders to.allow Mr.Woodman to go.upon his own personal bail, to appear before the Recorder next morning. On Saturday ‘morning the case was heard before His Honor Judge Weir.- Mr.W.D.Lighthall, K.C., counse for the Bible Society, appeared for the defendant.claiming that the nature of the work being done by the accused coul” not be concluded at 7.30 o'clock last night. This was an action by which Mr.William McAlpine claimed ten thousand dollars from the Grand Trunk Railway Company for having lost one of his legs, and sustained other in- Juries in being run over by a locomotive at the Guy street crossing. The accident took place at a time when Guy street was under repair. It was claimed, for the plaintiff that the gates at the crossing had, for that reason, been kept permanently closed, and were no signal of danger since street car passengers had to get transfers, cross the tracks on foot and board cars on the other side of the gates, while pedestrians had also ¢0 cross in the same manner. It was, therefore, claimed that the practice .of persons crossing the ‘racks had become establistied and permitted by the.com- pany. This, it was elaimed, created a source of danger which had not been properly guarded against by the statutory warning of the approach of! trains or engines.’ The jury found the company responsible for ‘the accldent, and assessed the damages at $9,000.They, however, deducted $2,600 on the ground that the plaintiff had not looked sufficiently before crossing the tracks. They therefore found damages for the plaintiff in the sum of $6,500.WHOLE SECT ON TRIAL.Which Russian Government Seeks to Exterminate.Kharkov, Russia, Wednesday, Sept.28 —T'he Court of Assizes has Eastern railway and the Paris, Lyons & Mediterranean lines, the leaders of the French workingmen generally threaten a gigantic movement to paralyze the activities of the whole country. The electricians and other employees of the Omnibus, Metropolitan and Subway Transportation lines of this city considered to-day ‘the advisability of seizing this favorable opportunity to launch a strike for a redress of long-standing grievances. The situation "throughout the republic is regarded as grave. The extension of the strike to the east and south has practically jsolat- ed Paris, which ig threatened With famine. The government is seriously concerned over the matter of food sup- Ply.FOOD PROBLEM IS SERIOUS.i iM.Tallieres hurriedly returned from his estate in the south to-day and conferred with the ministers, The problem of food looms ominously.Already the market is pinched. The president of the Grain Syndicate said that the stock of flour on the Paris market to-day did not exceed 75,000 quintals.A quintal is equivalent to 220.46 pounds avoirdupois.Paris consumes 10,000 quintals daily.; The government is adopting measures similar to those practiced in time of war.The strike threatens to become general hy to-morrow morning.Traffic is disorganized. The inconvenience to the public can be scarcely appreciated by one not present at one of the great centres of travel. The railway managers cannot possibly cope with the situation. It is upon the government, however, that the burden rests. The Cabinet has called the strikers to the colors in their capacity as reservists. The strikers declare they will not respond, holding that the law providing for military organization did not intend to make it impossible for traine men to protest effectively against conditions of labor, which they consider unfair. This’ issue between the government and.the strikers constitutes the mast ‘serious phase of the sitoa- tion. The reservists who failed to report for duty.may be declared deserters and dealt with according}y.STRIKE MAY YET BECOME GENERAL.Following the strike on the Northern Railway yesterday, the Central State Committee of the National Railway Union decided to call out every employee of the private and state- owned railways. The employees of the Western Railway, who also have grievances, decided to.go out last night.Their example was followed this morning by ‘the trainmen of the Eastern Railway, who voted to quit work at noon, and by the men of the Paris, Lyons and Mediterranean line, who voted to quit last evening. The leaders declare that the strike will be general throughout France by to-morrow morning, when not a single train will be in motion at any point in the republic.Early to-day the authorities were apprised of the vote for a general strike, and worked feverishly in an attempt to control the situation.Troops have been mobilized and sent out.to occupy the principal points on all railways. As soon as possible further decrées calling to the colors every railway employee in France will be issued.Ce SITUATION HAT IS GRAVE, Tt The morning papers print pages of details of the strike, and declare that it is impossible to exaggerate the gravity of the situation created by the vote for a general strike, which until late last night had not been expected. The sirikers demand a general increase, with a minimum wage of $1 a day, a retroactive application of the employees pension law, a more equitable division of labor, one day off in seven, and employment by the month instead of by the day.The great railway lines are the Eastern, the Central, the Northern, the Paris, Lyons and Mediterranean, the Western, the State and Belt lines. The total trackage is nearly 25,000 miles, and some 300,000 employees would be involved in a general strike. The men of the Eastern, Western, Northern and Paris, Lyons and Mediterranean already have voted to ‘stop work. The greater number of these were already idle to-day.The strike on the Western Railway is most serious so far as Paris is concerned, and if successful, will paralyze business at the Capital. It has cut off an enormous suburban traffic and interrupted communication with the ports of Cherbourg, Havre, Dieppe and Brest.MANY TRAVELLERS CANNOT PROCEED.ree Cologne, October 12.—Railway traffic between this city and France was at a standstill to-day.Hundreds of travellers at frontier points were unable to proceed.Arrangements have been made to send the French mails jnto France by way of Jeumont in the frontier of France.Travellers in automobiles arriving here from France by way of Jeumont, say that many caravans of motor cars have reached the Belgian frontier from French points. They report that the railway strikers are insulting, and pelt travellers with missiles.Observers of the situation express the fear that the strike movement will assume a revolutionary character.Paris, Oct.12.—The strikers met yesterday afternoon and voted 0 continue the strike until their demands were met and the militant members of their organization wh) had been dismissed during the day were reinstated; but also in the interests of public wer°at2, to request a
