ke, the fact that the man is dead shows that there must have been doctors called near him.” .! \\ sesû The witness was afterwards cross- examined by Mr.Jacobs, to show that he was on bad terms with Abraham- son, the manager of the place. The witness admitted that they had had words together, because Abrahamson had accused him of playing the part of an informer.Questioned by Mr.Recorder Weir, Heefey's last spree, he | seen ht every day coming out drunk’ from Fraid’s place.ed.He had attended Heefey, who had died of acute tubercular pneumonia, When he was called in a professional capacity to Heefey’s bedside, he found him suffering from the effects of protracted overindulgence it alcoholic liquors. It was quite possible that this continued intoxication had hastened Heefey’s death.Mr.George Elliott, secretary-treas- urer of the Willlamson Warehousing Company, situated directly across the street from the Fraid’s saloon, said the place was a continual temptation to the number of employees working at the Williamson's warehouse. The Metropole Cafe case was then taken up.A Leonard, the minager of the dining-room, stated that previous to taking up his present position he had kept a saloon near the Chicago Stock Yards. He claimed he had purged the place of its ‘old crowd,’ by refus- iug admittance to any one ‘who did not look good to him.’ ; Witness referred to his tireless efforts in pruning down a certain class’ who attempted to frequent the place. He had actually thrown out several persons.‘ ‘Ah, you threw some persons out?questioned Mr.Patterson, counsel for the Dominion Alliance.‘Now tell us why you threw them out.’ ‘They were not worthy to come to the Metropole,’ answered witness.‘Why were they not worthy?asked Mr.Patterson.‘I didn’t like the looks of their faces,” replied witness, amidst laughter.Other employees of the cafe also gave testimony as to its good character, after which Mr.Perron, addressing the commissioners, declared that though, previous to.the taking over of the establishment last April by the present owners, there might have been something left to be desired in the manner in which affairs had been conducted, efforts had been made by the present proprietors to better matters. The owners were con- the upstairs dining-room altogether, and to exclude from the premises all unig d women. The case was thén takén en delibere.; The application of Mrs.Elizabeth Kelly for a renewal of license was then taken up and granted without comment. The following cases were then arranged for future hearing: J.Murray, en delibere; P, McCoogan, next Wednesday; A.Aubertin, to-day; Wm.Allen, next Wednesday; J.Levesque, to-day; Q.Brabant, to-day.FEDERATION OF EMPLOYERS WILL FIGHT STRIKES.Strong Combination of Building Trades Confron! Trades Unions With Power to Order a General Lockout + That the strikes of 1910 in the building trade considerably upset the cquanimity of the “building trades is ronsidered by Trade Union circl.to be the reason for A move which is now being consummated by the Build- trs’ Exchange.; Starting with the beginning of the year the Master Plumbers’ Association has formed a federation with the Builders’ Exchange for purposes of vifence and defence, the Plasterers’ Association is stated to ~ .considering a similar move, and, it is understood, t .pinters and electricians will also join the federation, thereby making the strongest group of employers in Montreal. The various interests will not give up their present offices or autonomy, but will use the rooms and the facilities of the Builders’ Exchange and have representatives on their board of directors. This combination means that if strikes threaten in the building trade in future the strikers will ‘have the whole force of tlie employers.to fight against. In' trade union circles this ‘is regarded partly as a tribute to their | strength, but more particularly as a very serious proposition which will have to be faced in the near future. It means, for instance, that.if the bricklayers declare a strike this year, the co-operation of the masters in the allied trades can be called for by the Builders’ Exchange ahd a general lockout declared until such ‘time as the strikers secede.7 | Whilst at the Builders’ Exchange such an idea is pooh poohed, leading mm naively state that such a proceeding would not be beyond the possibilities of the newly formed alliance.; Similar federations in other trades a._ other cities have generally meant an early trial of strength between the united masters and the united trade unions, but if auch a thing is being contemplated in Montreal, no hint of it is being allowed to leak out from the various executives.TWO TOWNS BURIED Earthquake in Russian Turkestan Results in Widespread Destruction- st.Petersburg, Jan.5.—A despatch {+m Tashkend, Russian Turkestan, %3s there are unconfirmed rumors pr the towrs of - Przhevalsk and “lipek, in the territory of Semire- : nsk, were destroyed by yesterday's -1thquake, and that a lake bas form- «tu the site of the former place.+I town has a population of about I] mmunicatior with the disturbed t'on is still ir,possible, and the Gov- ent here has no advices to-day tantiating the .latest alarming corts, ti i e TS SOCIALISTS’ PROTEST.© Socialists of Montreal will hold | 453 meeting in the Labor Temple | Sunday afternoon to ‘protest ‘ist the trial, behind closed doors, Pr.Kotoku and other 'Japahese lists, whose only érime appear that they ‘are socialists.-Dr.1 was One of the delegates at | Stittgart conferénce, which was “hile the Russo-Japanese war vies en, avd Russian fae i Tapa- l'l-zates met on friendly terms “x Luieir esuntrymen were Hghting.¢ - “fot ow long peritd MONTREAL DRY DOCKS | Company.Likely to.Reach Agreement for Construction With Government, : Ottawa, Jan.5—It is stated: here that the promoters of the Montrez! dry-dock Bcheme will notify-their de-| tio mands in regard to a Government subsidy in such a way that the differences which exist wiil be -hridged over and the subsidy granted. One of the pofnts of difference has been that the company has asked for progress payments, whereas tie law provides for payment ol the subsidy only when the work is éempleted. The modified proposal, it is expécted, will be more in conformity ‘large sum on.the conservation and ‘renewal of Canadian, Le proposéd that "the.as!
