tion.Toronto merchants have consequeatly been filling orders for staple dry goods with more confidence, and the general outlook "is encouraging.A large business js being repcrted with the North-West, where harvesting has already begun and a good yleld expected. The grocery trade is in fair shape, with prices generally firm.In hardware and metals there is a fair movement.but these lines are not as active as a fortnight ago.Leather is moderately active, with prices firm.A good advance is noted rin the prices of wheat.New white Is selling at Ontario points west at 73c, and old at 75c and 76c.These quotations are 10c more than the prices a year ago.Manitoba wheat 18 scarce with small stocks in ‘his province, and high prices consequently are asked. They are fully 20c per bushel above those of a year ago.Farmers are hopeful and In better spirits.Money is circulating freely and payments generally reported good.Money is easy.with call loans 3% to 4 percent, and prime commercial paper discounted at 6 percent.Speculation on the Toronto Stock Exchange continues good, and values are generally firm.Toronto Rallway, Toronto Electric, Assurance stocks, C.P.Rand Cable are the favorites.| | | ! THROUGH BROOKLYN STREETS.SCATTERS ALL IN HIS PATH INCLUDING A YOUNG LADY.New York, Aug.6—A wheelmah in Brooklyn late vesterday afternoon scorched like an express train through the streets, passing bicycle policemen ag if they were standing still, and finally, after a wild run of more than a mile, landed in a sewer excavation. It wns George Duncan of Jamaica, on his new motor cycle, who caused all the excitement, and the story of his thrilling ride on the new fangled steed is such as has never before been told.He was an unwilling passenger on the wheel. The young man, who is an expert wheelman, had been working for some time on his invention, and on Tuesday he took it to Glenmore avenue.which leads from Brooklyn to Jamaica, for a trial. The motor cycle resembled a tricycle somewhat, having three wheels, all of the same size, one of them being in front. The motor was run by a storage battery. All the wheels were steel spoked and rubber tired, and between the two rear ones was the seat. This new kind of cycle attracted much attention, but the spectators all laughed at Duncan when the machine refused to go.But the inventor was not discouraged. He took the machine to a repair shop, and worked hard on it.Everything was ready for the trial yesterday. Many pedestrians and bicyclers watched him about six o'clock as he confidently climbed into the saddle and pushed the lever to the first notch. The first notch, Duncan had explained, regulated the speed to five miles an hour. While all watched the machine with breathless interest, it started off. After moving a few feet, it bucked like a broncho a few times and then started along at racehorse speed. The rider tried in vain to ' shut off the power, but he soon found that the creature of his own hands was decidedly master of the situation. As Duncan's hat blew off and the wind whistled through his hair, the runaway cvele started on its wild race.Realizing that the thing was wound up for at least twenty miles, the rider held on like grim death, and, ringing his bell furiously, shouted out a warning for all to make way for him.‘Wheelmen scattered like chickens fleeing from a hawk, and watched the strange-looking steed as it dashed by with a whirr and a hum. Many tried to ‘follow it, and bicycle policemen, seeing the man scorching, started to overhaul him. They hardly did more than start, for Duncan’s speed was record- breaking.Pale with excitement, the rider pluckily stuck to his wheel, and rushed along safely until he reached En- field street. Then there was a crash, and Miss May Smith was struck and hurled from her wheel. She was bruised and cut about the hands, but mot seriously.Duncan could not stop to apologize, and by the time Miss Smith had regained her feet, was far on toward the horizon down Enfield street. On he dashed into Broadway, and then down Rhore avenue toward Woodhaven. In this avenue Duncan spied a pile of loose earth and made for it, as a shipwrecked sailor makes for land. The collision was as severe as it was sudden, and the rider was thrown headlong over the handle-bars into a deep sewer excavation bevond the pile of earth. The wheel, though upset, continued to move like a wild animal in a death struggle. As the wheels revolved with lightning speed, the dirt flew around in clouds, and the machine jumped about like a crazy kangaroo. These strange antics were kept up for nearly half-an-hour, until the stored electricity had escaped. The rider crawled from the ditch, bruised and with torn clothes, and watched the jumping machine sadly. He was not seriously hurt and finally started for home, pushing the wreck before him.Duncan declares that he will give the thing another trial.Middletown, N.Y., Aug.6.—Mrs.Jeannette Nelson, seventy-four years old, widow of the Rev.Dr.Joseph Nelson of this city, was knocked down and seriously injured by a bicyclist last night as she was returning from a visit to a sick grandehild.Mrs.Nelson was crossing the street to her residence when A.K.Dewey, a merchant, approached on his hieyele. He was looking in another direction and did not see Mrs.Nelson until the pedals of his wheel caught her dress and threw her to the ground.Mrs.Nel son sustained a fracture of the shoulder the ' 7s to 7s 1d; red winter, 6s 114 to 6s U!4d; : and is suffering from nervous shock.Sing Fing, N.Y., Aug.5—Mrs.Elliott F.Shepard has had signs placed upon all the entrances to her handsome estate, known as Woodlea, at Scarborough, below this village, forbidding bicyclists to ride on the grounds. The Shepard place has been for a long time a favorite pilgrimage for bicyclists, as its well-made driveways made an excellent place for riding, and Mrs.Shepard has always kept it open to the public.Mischievous biecy- clists have destroyed Aug.6.—An issue in which a number of large fish companies are said to be interested has been raised here.A vigorous protest has been made by the A.Booth Packing Company against paying a quarter cent duty on fish from Canada imposed by the Dingley bill, the collec tor of this port yesterday levied on a cargo of fish on one of the Booth steamers. He takes the position that the fish levied on cannot be admitted free as they were caught in Canadian waters by Canadian fishermen in the employ of the Booth Company. The company, however, has filed a protest in which it is stated that it is an American corporation, composed of citizens of the United States; that the fish were caught by nets owned by the company; that they were packed and transferred by it; that for this reason the fish should be admitted free under a provision of the Dingley bill which allows citizens of the United States to bring in fish free of duty which they have caught in foreign fresh waters. The decision of the collector will be appealed to the Secretary of the Treasury and if the company is decided against there it is said it will be taken to court as a test case.A CANADIAN STEAMER FINED.Boston, Mass, Aug.8.—The case of the technical violation of the passenger laws of the United States by the Dominion line steamer ‘Canada’ on her last sailing from this port has been disposed of bv n small fine of fifty dollars being imposed. The local inspectors have now thoroughly examined the steamer and found that she had a full equipment of life boats, life rafts and life preservers, amply sufficient to meet even an extraordinary demand. They have now granted the ‘Canada’ a license to carry 285 saloon, 205 second cabin and 350 steerage passengers, a total of 840 souls, at any one trip from this port.It is now n rule that the captain of every passenger steamer sailing from this port for England will be required to make oath at the customs house before the steamer leaves as to the exact number of passengers his ship will carry.TORONTO'S NEW MAYOR.ALD.SHAW ELECTED TO SUCCEED MAYOR FLEMING, ASBESSMENT COMMISSIONER.Toronto, Aug.6.—At last the suspense is over and the assessment commissioner- ship has been accepted by His Worship Mayor Fleming at a salary of four thousand dollars a year. His Worship was, it appeared, a little disappointed in not being offered a larger sum, and he said so, but gratefully and graciously accepted the position at the named salary and then handed in his resignation. In the battle that followed for the vacant chair of the Mayor three forces immediate'y ,&itered the field, Aldermen.Shaw, Scott ‘and Hallam being the representatives of the various sections. One ballot was faken.and when the battle was over Ald.Shaw was elected by a plurality of six votes. From now until the end of the year Mr.Shaw will be known to his associates as Mr.Mayor.A PRIEST FINED FOR TRESPASSING.Tecumseh., Neb., Aug.6—The controversy between the two factions of St.Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church has broken out anew.Bishop Bonacum and Viear-General Hartig of Nebraska City were here on Wednesday evening to install Father Corcoran in the priest's house.Father Hartig, Father Corcoran and his housekeeper forced an entrance to the parsonage.A trustee named Shaugh- nessy arrived on the scene with an officer and Father Hartig was arrested for illegally entering a residence. In the county court Judge Brandin found the Vicar-General guilty or house-breaking and fined him twenty-five dollars and costs, which was immediately paid.THE LATE MR.GRANT.Winnipeg, Aug.6.—The drowning of the Rev.Alexander Grant, pastor of the First Baptist Church, has caused great sorrow in Winnipeg. He was an expert canoeist, and for seven years had annually gone to the Nepigon river. When the body is recovered it will be brought bere for interment.Mr.Grant and Mr.A.M.McDougall left for Camp Alexander about eleven o'clock on Wednesday, and in ascending the rapids shipped some water.Mr.Grant, who was in the stern of the canoe, is supposed to have risen in his seat to escape getting wet, when the canoe upset, throwing both into the water.A tug and party of men are now trying to recover the body.> GULF REPORT.L'Islet—Clear, strong west wind; inward, 6 a.m., Turret.River du Loup—Clear, north-east wind.Father A SHARP-WITTED HOG.John Burroughs in his attractive book, ‘ Winter Sunshine,” tells how a quick- witted cow discovered the means of satisfying her taste for apples.‘ While rubbing herself against a tree, she had observed that an apple sometimes fell. This stimulated her to rub a little harder, when more apples fell. Then she took the hint and rubbed her shoulder with such vigor that the farmer had to check her and keep an eye on her to save his fruit.” The hog is generally considered a stupid animal, but the following anecdote gives that brute a place as high in the scale of intelligence as that occupied by Mr.Burroughs's cow.A few years ago I was connected with a government agency in Indian Tern- tory.A’ large peach-orchard belonging to the agency school came under my The trees were well loaded with fruit, but all seemed strong enough to bear their burdens.Qne day, however, broken limbs were noticed here and there and, at each succeeding visit to the or- freshly-broken branches were found trailing their twigs on the ground.I was now certain that the weight of the fruit had not caused this destruction of the trees, for some which bore the least load had suffered with the others.there do their best to reach higher and safer ground.urawares by the boar.” Sometimes men Woe to man cor beast overtaken attempting to cross the chanmel, or ani mals feeding on the low flats are over- muddy waters.adie, an arm of the Bay of Fundy, near ite entrance at the town of Maitland. The great basin was full from bank to bank and one mile across. The strong terrvman soon pulled over; the day passed and I returned to cross the Shu- benacadie homeward. But the river was gene. The large basin, one mile across, was black mua fats, save only a narrow stream flowing in the ventre. From this the vast mud flats ruse until they met the green fields.‘You are too late,’ said the ferryman, ‘the last boat has crossed; no boat until eleven o'clock to-night at high water, don’t you hear the tide coming?’ As [ listened 1 heard a rumbling as of distant thunder. It was but six o'clock, I could not wait until eleven, because I had to walk through a forest road for miles, and it was said robberies were frequent on that lonely road.l must get over the river, if the boatman would venture, I would.T urged my case.* Wal; said he, ‘there be danger, but if you resk it, I will. You see the flats vonder—they be safe, I'll put you down, then you make for high water mark.Come quick, the ‘ boar’ is coming, don’t vou hear?’ Not realizing the danger, I consented. We were half-way across the narrow channel, when the * boar,” having glided like an enormous serpent round the point below the town of Maitland, shot upon us like a dart. But the ferryman knew his business well, and mct the onset with the boat-end, so we sped with the ruching waters. With a few dexterous strokes the boat was shot out of the current on to the flats. Then the veteran ‘errvman jumped into the shallow water and carried me on his back, at a run.Setting me down a few feet out of the water, not a hundred yards from the next incoming wave, he shouted, ‘ Run, make straight for high ground ! Run, see.she comes! Did T need further stimulus?I was sixty feet below high water mark, over a quarter of a mile out on the flats! Behind me, at my very heels, were the spent waters of the * boar,” coming on like hungry lions roaring for their prey.At first the * boar’ as the ground rose the waters were left behind.Putting on all possible speed, I succeeded in keeping ahead. How the enemy dashed, splashed, hissed and roared after its victim |! One mis-atep, quicksands, soft, deep mud, would be enough, goon all would be over.Fortunately none hindered, and in less time than it can be fully told, it was over. The race was won.I was safe. The mad waves rushed on furiously, the spot my feet were on a few minutes Lefore, was now covered by more than twenty feet of angry waters. Then coming nearer, like a lon disappointed at losing its evening meal, the waters raged up to high water mark, and then began to roll back on themselves in their wrath.Thankful?Yes; 1 had escaped the very Jaws of death. As the imminence of the danger, and the greatness of the deliverance came upon me, how grateful 1] was! Nearly overtaken! it was a close run and how grateful I felt that I was safe! Then trembling in every limb after the intense strain, I noticed with joy the safe arrival of the brave ferrvman. He had shot his boat ahead of the angry waves and quickly reached the other shore, a little above his boathouse. With a cheer in view of my victory and a wave of his hand, he was gone to await another passenger over the muddy waters of the Shubenacadie.I can never forget, while memory remains, the moment when the ‘ boar ’ shot after me and the host of furious waters was at my heels seeking to devour—it was short but terrible, one of the experiences that onc carries forever.A.W.MACLEOD.The country was over-run with half- wild hogs, many of which were feeding in the orchard, for no fence was proof against these razor-backs.I began to think that they were in some way responsible for the broken branches, but the question was, how? They surely did not climb the trees? My curiosity was soon rewarded by seeing an enormous porker approach a tree, rear up against the trunk, put his fore-feet over the nearest branch, and ; with the perfect erectness of a man, walk taken and carried away to perish in the, i his fore feet to bend it down.On reach- Not long ago I crossed the Shubenac- ‘ seemed to gain, but out the full length of the limb, using ing the outer end he seized the limb firmly in his mouth, dropped on all fours and pulled until the branch broke off close to the trunk.A feast was then in reach, which he enjoyed to the full.I have related this story to many an incredulous listener. But for the fact that my eves have never deceived me at such close range, I myself could almost question the reliability of it —Linnaeus Roberts, in ‘ Popular Science News.—__ The emblems of royalty of the Queen of Madagascar consiat of three scarlet umbrellas, which are held over Her Majesty when she sits in her palanquin of state—this latter a present, oddly enough, from the late Emperor of the French.—‘Popular Science News.’ WHITE MOUNTAINS, NEW HAMPSHIRE.ADIRONDACKS.LAWBONNY and COTTAGES KEEBEVILLE, N.Y.Fino Location, beautiful Mountain Scenery; D.J.Goggin.M.A, Superintendent of Education, Regina, NW.T.; D.MeIntvre, M.A., Superintendent of Schools, Winnipeg.Man.; W.J.Robertson, B.A., LL.B., Principal of the Collegiate Institute, St.Cathar- ines, Ont.; Benjamin Sulte, the well- known historian, Ottawa, Ont.; S.P.Robins, M.A., LL.D., Principal of Me- Gill Normal School, Montreal ; G.VW.Hay, Ph.B., Principal of Victoria High School, St.John.N.B.; J.B.Hall, M.A, 4 Ph.D., Professor of the Normal School, Truro, N.S.; and Alexander Anderson,’ LL.D., Principal of Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, P.F.I.In order that the committee might be able to offer some material inducements to the competitors an appeal was made lars to be assessed against each province in proportion to the number of public schools within its jurisdiction. With a cordiality which is most gratifying the amount assessed was in each case paid to the treasurer of the committee, and the financial difficulty of the scheme was thus overcome. The response to the announcement of the committee that a history of Canada was desirable was equally gratifying, as no less than fifteen manuscripts were submitted for competition. In August, 1895, the committee for the purpose of jointly considering the merits of the different manuscripts. On this work two weeks were spent by.the committee jointly, and nearly a yar by the members of the committee in a racre careful examination of th» manuscripts that appeared most meritorious to the whole committee. As the result of its deliberations we have a new his tory of the Dominion of Canada. The next duty of the committee was to provide for the publication of the rew text-book.After fully considering this matter the methods adopted by the Fducation Department of Ontario were considered most convenient for all purposes.Accordingly the manu-ciipt was placed in the hands of the Copp, Clark C(‘empany, Limited, and the Methodist Book Publishing Company, with sub- publishers at Halifax.St.John, Montreal, Winnipeg and Victoria, the intention being to issue the book simultaneously in all the provinc2, of the Dominion.Already the new history has been authorized in every province and territory of the Dominion, with the exception of Nova Scotia, the delay in the latter case heing owing to the absence of the Attorney-General on official Lusine:s in England. So far as the Province of Ontario is concerned the history is authorized in the fifth form of the public schools only and in the high schools and collegiate institutes. It may be added that the author of the new history is Mr.W.H.P.Clement, B.A.LI.B,, who has written a standard Purest and Best for Table and Dairy b with respect.DAILY WITNESS.work on the constitutional history of Canada, and whose thorough equipment for this task is beyond question. We heartily congratulate the teachers of Ontario on the opportunities which this new history affords them of emphasizing the solidarity of Canada as a Do- .minion.The future of the.country very largely depends upon the cultivation of the idea that, although we are separate provinces, far removed from each other geographically and commercially, yet we are one nation and one people; and while it may be true that bigness is not .greatness, it is equally true there can be no national spirit unless every Canadian feels, no matter on which side of the continent he lives, that he has a common interest with his fellow-Canadians in the honor and prosperity of the country as a whole. In this great jubilee year, when the representatives of all the colonies of the British empire acknowledge by their presence at the capital of the empire their fealty to the idea of imperial unitv, it is most fitting that the people of Canada should acknowledge their fealty to the idea of Canadian unity by placing in the hands of the teachers of Canada a text-book so prepared as to facilitate instruction with this end in view.!
