both expressed the conviction that General Buller was an able general, who deserved the respect of the soldiers ; but Lord Methuen, both averred, was unequal to the position he occupied.General Smith-Dorrien was in command of the nineteenth brigade, to which the young men were attached, and under him was Lieut.-Col.Colville, of whom much was said in the way of praise.Mr.Dunham wes in the hospital at Bloemfontein, and frankly states {hat there was much neglect. The men were left lying outside exposed to the elements. The rain fell upon sick men.The supplies ordered were not on hand at the right time. The fault lay, mot so much with the authorities of the hospital as with the commissariat department, , st anded spldiers recovered quickly; wy a bullet night through his ste- mach. The bullet came out at the other wide ; the man recovered.’ Mr.Dunham told a.story of & man named Kennedy who at Paardeberg got eleven holes in his body from Mauser pullets, and who made a wonderful recovery, Mr.Dunham and some others brought the wounded man in from the front of the enemy. But the enteric fever cases were alow, and the mortality was something like seventy percent. While Mr.Dunham was in hoepitel there was eomething like eight and ten deaths a day from enteric fever. The disease was due to bad water end irregi- larity of eating.‘When men would fast for a long time, they would gorge themselves upon the first opportunity. This helped to bring on the disease.’ But both men condemned the orderlies in the hospitals, They were uncivil, and the majority of them were rogues. Both men had valuable curios stolen from them.As to the Boer as a fighter, Mr.Dun- beam and Mr.Rooke both say of him that he fights well. Some of the men no ‘doubt stay behind the laager in a cowardly way, but the majority are good fighters.Nor mast it be urged as an objection againet them that they fight behind the rocks and hills. That is just whet the British would have liked. The Boers had a good fighting country, and they made the most of the situation.‘We had only ant hills, and sometimes not even thet, for cover,’ said the men.‘Indeed, we were better in the open, for the ant hills were a sort of target which attracted the attention of the Boers.’ ‘Asked as to what the feeling of the ‘men was when they firet entered into battle and found men beside them fall E { à Bit 5
