- Cn ‘This ‘combination makes him Qquick- tempered, sensitive and-foolish: It also makes him ‘susceptible to attention, as well às jealous in'its absence.Whien- ever ‘we get a new lion he ‘‘goes in the air.” That is to gay, he gets sullen, which comes from the jealous streak; and will ‘never rest easy until he-stirs up ‘a fight.If-the newcomer has any backbone, and will have it out with lim, the chances are, after à.fair-to-middling struggle, he”Will quit. But if the other animal does not put up a stiff fight,” and is driven to.his corner, then he is in hizh Æeather and bound: to, make.-the.lifé of the victim a daily misery. As he‘is.the handsomést and: biggést male we bave just now, I handle him in such a Way as to.flatter his vanity aid make him a peaceful picture as well as a quiet leader in the troop of lions we carry.ONE SHOWS LANGUAGE BUMPS.‘The youngest, over there in the cage, is only two years old, and hardly strong enough to show his nature yet. However, lions reach their full growth at four years, and his head and face are suili- ciently well developed in character ex- ression.to enable me to read his traits, he could speak he would be a beautiful talker. His eyes have that bulge which gives expression to both writing and speaking, or, for that matter, playing and singing. His forehead is narrower than Prince’s and it rises on top, and has a longer line from the top of the forehead to -a point back of the ears. This means a number of things. It means that his nature is'more gentle, and 1it means that he will be tidy and well- mannered.Animals have manners as well as people, and: in’ this respect they run from good to bad in the same way.‘The only difference is,’ people can ac- .quire them from association, whereas animals are born with qualities that make them. His nose has more the shape of the north lion—that is, it is not so Yong.It is a trifle wider, too, and the face is shaped so that no feature sticks out strongly at the expense of any other. That means that it is well-balanced and will have a more serene life. You vill find the other boys.and girls of the Jion family coddling more with Lim than one in The question of intelligence in the lion, ust now he.is rather proud of the king of the lion head; said to-be-more: ‘gf his’ type.known to 3: 1 ; It-was ‘interesting ‘to - hear Mr.‘Spencer recent of Prince’s kind. Were he on two legs and in our clothes, he would make a good Churchman and build up a family. The other big fellow would wear ‘straps of some kind and lead the dance, or he wouldn’t stay.He probably would be a politician, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he landed in Washington and made his daughters too dressy for their old friends.IS SOOTHED BY MUSIC.‘That.this youngster I am talking about has a musical sense and ear you will see when the music begins. When the music is of ‘a good quality, like that in the concert before the circus, his eyes dilate, ‘his body is eagerly erect, his ears twitch and there is every outward sign of his being deeply pleased. On the other hand, when the clown band begins to tear up the air, he goes through all the motions of a person in acute pain.1 we were at our wintér quarters, at Bara- boo, and this animal was feeling poorly.; He evidently had taken #& severe cold, .and- as lions are susceptible to pneumonia, I was considerably worried, for he is an unusually fine specimen of a beast.1} gave him medicine in his food and drink, and: he gradually got well.I honestly believe, however, that the operatic airs up his strength than had the medicine he took.It had a most’ peculiar effect” on.him.~The moment] lines and formation of his face and’ t ht ead.: : _ being in a trance of happiness until the SPEC 1 AR by which they exactly tell the’ talents] perfectly still and was just like a human IMEN OF A LION.; .: music ceased.'This-Zhowed me that the lines: of eloquence.under the eyes mean something in animal mature as well as in ; human nature. The further proof of his domestic nature as shown by the cheeks, chin, lips, nose and forehead is seen.in the’ quiet way he carried himself among His fellows and the friendly regard they all seem to-have for him.: HEART, CONSCIENCE AND BRAINS.‘In the third cage beyond is another type of lion, whose head and ‘face plainly tëll a character story. For his body he has too muth-head.He has more forehead than any in the.collection.It is a high, steep, wide forehead, and bulges more at the top. That signifies that he has more grey matter stored there and thinks a whole lot for himself. Were he a man they would probably make him a judge, saying that he had a judiciai mind "and had a capacity for sifting things to the bottom before entering judgment. As a lion he can’t hold office, and ‘any thought he may have he must keep to Himeelf. He looks sometimes as if he.were reading you through- and through That he has a fine sense of right and wrong, ‘which may come from reflection, ‘and may come from some moral sensibility, is seen in the fact that he never steals, such-as food, and in all the battles that have taken place among the lions in our animal quarters, he has been uniformly on the side of the weaker and the aggrieved.I'll bet he could write a story were he able to talk, for you will notice.over the temples there is quite a pronounced fulness, and his eyes are wide ‘apart and expressive, He makes you think of one of these little men with big heads and small bodies.who make the laws and write the romances and songs of the nation, but wouldn’t cut much of | a figure under a musket or stand up long in a soldier tramp under a tropical sun.A DIFFERE BRAND.‘Next to this lion.of literary suggestion is crouched one of entirely different brand. His head is almost round, and indicates that the good things of appetite are most important in hig daily feelings. It also shows that he will fight for his portion, and more, for he is a selfish beast.| His bones are now upholstered like an old-fashioned sofa.o-eat and’ sleep, and eat and sleep, are the only rhyming things in this life for him.He has.a good many counterparts in.human flesh, as everybody knows.I have to have him.watched constantly, or he would eat ‘all the youngsters’ portions and get so abnormally fat tnat he could not move, and would probably smother some night during a hard journey.‘The two little baby lions, I think, will turn out to be fine creatures. The father and mother are exactly opposite in characteristics and habits, which should bring about a happy combination in the character and nature of the offspring.I would prefer that they were more like their mother than their father.’ COURT STENOGRAPHER ASSAULTED.The other evening, Mr.Lomax, conrt stenographer, on going to his home, found a boy in the act of taking away some | branches of a tree in-a gentleman’s garden. He took hold of the boy and notified the owner,” who asked Mr.Lomax to hold the boy while he telephoned for the police.“While Mr.Lomax was doing this, two men approached; Ottawa, June 1.—From what transpired during the late session of parliament, two government bills are pretty certain of being brought.down next year. One of these will be to provide for an increase in judges’ salaries, and the other to correct .iregulärities in connection | with the payment.of indemnity and mileage to members and senators.Had the government been aware of the feeling of the House toward the former proposition it is not unlikely that.it would have been’ put through .this; -year, bus’ it was].near prorogation when the subject was] broachéd in" both -Houses; and ‘though: the strong opposition .which had séaled.the fate of former moves made in: the same direction was not shown on this- occasion by representatives of rural cor- » stituencies, it.did-not seem possible to.do more than lay the subject over.for another twelvemonth. The Minister of Justice stated in the Senate that he had wn up a scheme of increase, but that his colleagues had: not felt it wise to press the matter just yet.Mr.Mills intimated, though, ‘his firm conviction that if good men are to be Becured for elevation to the bench a higher scale of salaries must be brought into force.the Venate attention was drawn.to the fact that many.of those who are hardly ever in Ottawa during the session for attendance on their legislative duties |’ are yet permitted .té draw indemnity for Sundays and Saturdaÿs and all holidays when the Houses are not in session.Theoretically no indemnity is supposed to be paid.when a member or senator is not actually present; but pay goes on just the same; and those away from Ottawa feel as.much justified in drawing it as though they were here. The net result is that a representative could and does draw.quite ashandsome proportion of the indemnity without coming to the capital at all.The Secretary of State had this brought to his attention a few days before prorogation, and said -that the government proposed dealing - with this and other features of the existing law next year.It also came out in the debate that though’ all the segators travel on railway passes, some from the Maritime Provinces were not content with the mileage they drew, but thought an.allowance should be made them for travel by the roundabout Intercolonial System, instead of the direct and short ne men held was that ‘the C.P.R.should ot count a the shortest line.because it passés for dôme miles through the state of Maine. This contention was upheld, it appears; by.a former Speaker of the Senate, but it is probable that measures will be taken to prevent such.a state of things oecqurring again. If the govern- iment would accept the advice: of quite a few members it would abolish the mileage allowance altogether or limit it to the actual disbursements that one has been put to in going up to the capital and returning-home.; * LE “The members of the government, af- | ter the:rather fatiguing duties they have: to perform during the session, are now moving off.for rest and change of scene. The Mmister of Justice and Solicitor General ‘go to: England on -business in connection with: proposed reorganization of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, 80 .as to give the: colonies: more’ fitting representation. But their official duties are not likely to prove very heavy and they will have a ] for sight-seeing.Mr, Blair:goes on the: same boat.from Boston, but his trip is urely for recreation. The: Minister.of ilways and Canals, although of sirong physique, has felt: his powers much tried, and is recommended by his medical adviser to give himself a good#est.Blair has been working overtime, to get.as much done as possible-belgre railing: on Wednesday.To.your correspondent’ he said that he hardly knew whether hc: would get through before 1eaving.vhe necessary.-preliminaries in ‘connection with starting work on the new Lachine canal lock.He was anxious to do so; vegetable is not grown about Montreal in the same manner as the American asparagus, or as it 18 grown in Europe where it is not considered fit for the table unless the stalks are thick and finely blanched. This correspondent tells of the grocers who explain that the ‘green asparagus’ is called for by customers, and eo enters a remonstrance. It is easy to pass this over by saying that whatever satisfies the demand is the: proper method of supply, but it seems a pity such should be the case.People who prefer as- paragus- when it is green all through the bunch, get with it a rank flavor that is not found in the tender white bleached stalks that dre cut, as it should be, below ihe ground. We have gone -back from the asparagus of the ancients when Pliny mentions a variety of this vegetable growing near Ravenna three stalks of which weighed a pound, and English growers make a bunch of fifteen stalks weigh four pounds when cut below the ground, and the shoots white and tender.Certainly, if green rank growth is in demand the taste needs cultivating, but it is MKely in this, as in other marketable produce the demand will rule the quality.- The white asparagus needs more careful cooking than a cabbage, and that is probably one reason why it is not a guccess in many households, where the family caterer has not given the subject the extra thought necessary.GLOXINIAS.Peggy.—It is not yet too late to plant Gloxinia bulbs, probably yours were too damp; if kept all winter in the cellar. They -should be kept dry after blossoming, and left in the pot in a dry airy cupboard. It is not a good plan to cut off the: leaves, they should be left te assimilate plant food until the bulb has ripened. If you intend to plant now give them good garden soil, and a four-inch pot, covering them with about an inch of earth. They are not over-exacting in their requirements but are slow to start, and must be kept moist after planting, until they break ground, after which they grow very rapidly. They can be propagated by pieces of the leaves placed In a dish of moist sand, that will soon thicker, and send out roots to make plants.e- in any soil, UNION.(New York ‘Times.’)- It is extremely interesting and significant that the first serious scheme for the protection of British interests from American competition should be begun with a meeting of representatives of employers and employed for the formation of a British Todustrial Union. It is well known that a part of the disadvanta, that British trade feels in rivalry wit the American is due to the exactions of the trades unions, and especially to the higher rates of wages maintained for inferior work and the resistance of the unions to the employment of labor-saving machinery. To a considerable extent and much more than in this country the purpose of the unions has been to restrict the hours of work and increase the number of workers, rather than to extend the product and increase the amount of ‘work to be done.Against this handicap the employers are powerless to contend, unless they can have the co-operation of the unions, for even a successful fight with the unions would cripple them in their competition with American rivals.Accordingly, they have appealed to the unions to study the whole question with them. The unions have been persuaded to do so by their erception of the fact that the demand or British labor is likely greatly to be cut down if the Americans secure the markets heretofore enjoyed almost exclusively by the British. The essential point is that the community of interest thus recognized by both sides in this emergency really exists at all times, and that both parties will be vastly better off if they can come to a mutual agreement as to their relations than they can be when those relations are determined only by constantly renewed conflicts. The British Industrial Union ought to become permanent, and it ought to be an example for intelligent employers and employed in this country.ms CE IL, te 3 hee rome san, ek A = Tr THE MONTREAL DAILY.WITNESS A BELOVED WOMAN JOURNALIST.The Flower Mission — ‘Treatment Sir,—Within a few weeks the teachers of thousands of Sabbath-schools will be taking up the lesson prescribed by the International Committee on the creation and the institution of the Sabbath.I | do not know what treatment the subject has had from the commentators who provide notes on the lessons. Most of us depend almost entirely on the matter thus given for the teaching we in turn give our pupils. As the matter of the Sabbath is of very great importance, the ground of its observance is of equally great importance. Some months ago the statement was made in the ‘Witness’ that geologists assent to the substantial ‘agreement between the record of the ‘creative days in Genesis and the record of.the rocks as to the order of introduc- sive length ay.1 venture to take exception ‘to of geology was that of the late Sir William Dawson. In his work, ‘Origin of the world,” published in 1877, will be found the most that could be said by a thoroughly able scientist, one whose mem- tory will always be held.dear in Canada, as amon | tific world, and at the same time a most tenacious upholder of the then ortho- L dox view of Scripture teaching. At the beginning of his argument he presents a ‘clear and forcible statement of facts to 4 show.that the creative days of Genesis could not possibly be days of twenty-four hours each. Then follow the arguments in support of vast periods of unknown length and uncertain as to points of separation, which periods may ‘be .taken as corresponding with the successive days of Genesis.> ; ‘Here we may note first the assumption of the absolute correctness of the Mosaic account, to which, in some way or other, all the facts of science must correspond. To the intensely orthodox mind of Sir William Dawson no suspicion of legend or mere tradition was admissible. He Babylonish legends were probably derived (and distorted) from the Mosaic account. And, secondly, we note a candid confession of the difficulty of recosciling the two, even going so far as to suggest that future discoveries may bring to light remains of animal and vegetable life from the lower strata which will fill the gap now existing and make good the order of creation given in Genesis. If the.first the theory of the day of twenty hours—is a model of clearness, the séc- ond part is by no means clear, and his tabulating.the successive ca phic events of geological history with - à suggestion of uncertainty and doubt as to its conclusiveness. So far as my Knowledge extends, nothing later was published by Sir William Dawson.- In 1885 the famous statesman and con- troversialist, the Hon." W.E.Gladstone, made an attempt to reconcile the statements of Genesis with the facts of geology.Gladstone was not a scientist, and confessed he was: not, and when Prof, Huxley replied by disproving his ‘state- tion of Life on the earth, and that succes-, SIN periods of time.are now ac- |cepted as the days described in Genesis.this statement.‘: Perhaps the last: effort.:]-oË any scientist of note to reconcile the -| days of Genesis with the observed facts the foremost men of the scien- - "verts onl never hints at it, except to say that- part of his argument—that disposing of -fo : ory with the .sue- ‘cessive events of Genesis, is’ mar! by a ments and exposing the fallaey of his arguments, it’ became manifest that his confession was quite gratuitous. He attempted to quote Lyell in support of his position, but Huxley in rejoinder proved that no such support could be derived from Lyell’s writings, and the controversy ended in the complete defeat of the great statesman.Since that time no geologist of note has ventured to claim any such correspondence, or the possibility of it.The record of Genesis and the arallel legends of Babylon are hopeless- y at variance with fhe well-known facts of geology.Quite incidentally it occurs to the mind to query: ‘If for the thirty centuries or more the readers of Moses were led to believe in the twenty-four hour days of Genesis—as they evidently did—what becomes of the old view of the inerrancy of the Scripture ?But theologians are always more ready to defend than amend. Now as to the change of the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first day.of ‘the week. There is no word or hint of any authority for such change.Christ gave no countenance to the cast iron sacredness of the Sabbath as held by Pharisees, then and now.Bt.Paul expressly warns against a slavish adherence to that Sabbath, and so far doubtless paved the way for a change which seemed: then, and seems now, In every way advisable.‘The solitary reference to the first day of the week, and that for financial purposes, and the one referénce to the Lord’s day, furnish no authority or even recommendation for the change. And those who, with Pharisaic zeal, quote the Old Testament, and insist on the divine words of Moses, betray a marvellous readiness to set aside that divine command merely on the basis of an early church usage. One feels témpted to apply to these Christian Pharisees the words, ‘If the light that is in you be darkness, how great is that darkness !” If any body of men in those early days of Christianity could be supposed to express the divine will, it would be that council of the apostles held at Jerusalem to decide what should be required of the Gentile converts. These apostles (see Acts) said that the yoke of the law had been too heavy for their fathers and for them to bear, and asked of the new con- four things—and the observance of the Sabbath was not one of the four ! What jugaling with the truth do we hear on all sides, from the pulpit, the press, and the teacher’s desk, teaching for Scripture what the Seriptures do not teach.Second only to this unblushing perversion of the words of sacred writ 18 the silent assumption of those who are too cowardly to splay the light they have. The Jews of old kept the Sabbath under pain of death. For thirty or forty centuries it was implicitly believed that with infinite toil the Creator made the world in six days, and, being fatigued, rested himself on the seventh (see Leviticus). For a decade or two towards the middle of the last century men reluctantly: modified their views and lengthened out the days to suit the discoveries of science. This view did not last more than a score or so of years; in fact, it may be supposed the man on the street still’ believes in six literal But now, as has been shown above for nearly twenty years no word has heard.from those who may rightly be supposed to speak with authority on sei- entific matters in defence of the old tradition. Many readers of the ‘Witness’ no doubt have no clear idea of why they keep the Sabbath except to obey a divine command.with little consideration as to that point, accept the Sabbath in the spirit of Christ's words with gratitude, as they do other gifts of God—as they accept the days.fa But I am persuaded many, i ‘ Out of Sorts.of Natures laws pots the trouble, and you look it.up the liver.trivet, ADVERTISEMENTS, Carelessness and neglect, and ofttimes wilful disregard the system out of sorts.Horried, neglected and irregular meals cause most of No wonder the stomach revolts—goes on strike, It's functions are so necessary to your daily health that when it doesn’t act properly your entire body B suffers.Bowels clogged, liver inactive, blood impure, ‘bad taste, coated tongue—ryou feel all petered out— The result is indigestion, biliousness and constipa- 3 tion, followed by more serious complications if the body’s natural functions are not restored at once.To all such sufferers there is ) and palatable cure—that is time-tested, never-failing g Abbey's Effervescent Salt.A laxative that never À gripes, gentle, but certain, It gets the bowels back to | their normal action.Tones up the stomach.Livens i a sure, safe, economical Makes the entire system right as a | Abbey's Effervescent Salt All Druggists sell it 25e and 60c a bottle.| courts and of blessed rest of their nightly sleep and with such spiritual benefits as they may be able to obtain from it.And another motive, not a low one either, is that altruistic spirit of St.Paul, who would eat no meat while the world stands if he could save a brother from stumbling. And St.Paul was pre-eminent in his_demands for Christian liberty. The Jew received the ten commandments from Jehovah, who brought them up out of the land of Egypt. He did not bring us or our fathers out of Egypt, but he has done infinitely more for us, and wilfully blind must be he who does not see it.There has never been a second Moses, but we have one greater than Moses, if so be we do.not shut our eyes.No prophets of Jewish lineage for many centuries have told their visions, but in our time such revelations have been given of the wonderful works of God, that when a _comparison is made between the Mosaic story and the legends of early races, and the revelations derived through the God- given intellects of Copernicus and Gali- eo, Newton and Hugh Miller—yes, and our own Dawsqn and many others— when a comparison is made between the Knowledge of the race in its infancy and the light we.now have, how overpowering is the thought of our privileges.have written from no captious motive. The point of my letter is the interrogation point.I have abstained from any attempt at detail.” The ‘Witness’ must have among its readers many professional men, as college professors, who could in comparatively small space-give.an intelligible view of the present state of science in its bearings on this question.Montreal has a famous university; surely some of its eminent men might for once consent to let their light shine beyond the walls of the class room, and allow a much larger number than usual to benefit by their attainments.Let us havs more in detail the substance of Sir William Dawson’s latest word on the subject; let us have the facts of the Glad- stone-Huxley controversy.or some suck | matter.bearing on the subject. For: thi years, in .ifferent parts of Canada, I have read the ‘Witness,’ and consider that in Canada Lo journal ‘nas such a constituency of readers and thinkers. Therefore I venture to ask, on behalf of all earnest Sabbath-school workers, the help of the ‘Witness’ in doing what is, after all, as I take it, its mis sion, the spread of the light.i A.BOWERMAN.West Saskatoon, May 18, 1901.EE OATH OF ROMAN BISHOPS.(To the Editor of the ‘Witness.’ Sir,—In a late number the ‘Star’ published the oath taken by the bishops of the Church of Rome as supplied it through the kindness of Archbishop Bru- chesi. This was done probably to dis prove the statements of the Hon.8.H.Blake, K.C.But ‘is this the result? It is admitted that the oath taken includes these words: ‘I will aid them’ (i.e., ‘Our Sovereign Lord the e and his successors arly el ’) ‘to maintain and defe againet all men the Roman Papecy and the supremacy of St.P ter.” It does not require’ a” very deep kndw- ledge of history to find in this simple- looking declaration much if not entire support, for Mr.Blake's charge. For what is meant by the ‘Papacy,’ or ‘Pa- palism’ ‘Supremacy of St.Peter’?I quote from a volume, the ‘Anglican Brief Against Roman Claims’: ‘Pa means and includes ‘ everything that in Romanism exalts and magnifies the power of the Pope as supreme over the councils of the Church, elaim- ing for him the supreme rule and authority over all Christendom, deposing ower over temporal princes and infallibility in'lhis ex cathedra utterances.’ If this definition be correct then the Roman bishop at his consecration makes oath to maintain and defend against all men the right and power of the Pope to depose (as history shows he has many times attempted to do) earthly princes.and rulers. Is not this the same claim which Gregory VII.(1073-1085) asserted in declaring that the independence of the Church was to be found solely in the assertion of ite supremacy over the state? Is it mot the logical result of the change of title made by Pope Innocent ITI.(1198-1208) from Vicar of Peter (which his predecessors had used) to Vicar of Christ?Does not history prove that the Bishop of Rome as Vicar of Christ ‘claimed to be supreme over all kings and nations throughout the world and acted as if they had power to depose kings and princes at their pleasure, to absolve their subjects from allegiance and to bestow their kingdoms and principalities upon whom they chose’?Lin- gard says: ‘They (the popes) ‘became sovereigns over sovereigns, and assumed the right of judging them in their papal transferring their crowns ‘as they thought just.It will not be forgotten that the form of oath is said to be taken from the Roman Pontifical of Clement VIII.(1425, A.D.) and continues to this day, and instances of Allocutions on the part of Pope Pius IX.between 1835 and 1863, enforcing this claim, are given, if I mistake not, by the late Hon.W.E.Gladstone.How, then, it may well be asked is it possible to reconcile this oath—so understood and exemplified—with true loyalty to any earthly ruler? How reconcile the supremacy of the Pope, so affirmed and sworn to be upheld, with the claim of the King to be supreme and to ‘have the sovereignty and ruie over all manner of persons .either ecclesiastical or ral, soever they be, so as no foreign power shall or ought to have any superiority over them’?Much, too, might be said about the clause ‘I will pursue and fight against’ not only ‘heretics and schismatics’ (which might possibly mean the doctrines of these), but also ‘those who are opposed to the Sovereign Pontiff and his successors,” wiltich words cannot possibly apply to doctrines!
