The children will also receive a prize for their efforts. The Walk will commence at 9 a.m.from the Skating Rink.Mrs.Louise Triggs needs help from parents to get things organized at the start and to police the route.Call her at 247-2229.a Es at the annual Mother-and-Daughter Banquet last week included one Canada Cord and four All-around Cords.Shown, left to unit in this cause, Guernon said, “The federal government must work to keep the country together, and it must be stressed that the Quebec government does not have any mandate to split it up.” He then touched on several questions implicit in separation, question which, he said, have as yet been unanswered: “What will happen to the 60,000 federal employees in Quebec? Will there be a common market between Quebec and Canada? Will there be a shred customs service? Will there be a monetary union?Or will we have our own currency and if so, what will it be worth?” Guernon referred to a See QUE-CAN Page 7 right and their farm story is-one of continued growth.- The brothers were so busy, in fact.that they never got around to seler‘ing a fancy name for the farm.It has been known to them and to others simply as ‘‘The Atkinson brothers’ farm’ When they bought the farm the milk quota was 150,000 pounds of milk a year. When the Atkinsons sold, the deal included a milk quota of 1.750.000 pounds.Always the brothers set themselves goals.Initially it was a milk production of 1,000,000 pounds per year for each of them.Their latest goal was to strive for another 1,000,000 pounds because for the last five years they have had Douglas Beare as a hired man.“He has been an outstanding hand,” said James.“In our first year our gross income was $22,000,” he added.“In our last year the gross was $200,000." The dairy operation was sold as a complete unit.It included house.barns.110 Holsteins milking, about 90 head of young stock.farm machinery and 325 acres. Why have the Atkinsons sold?“It was a very tough decision.” said James.‘But See FARM Page 6 Cords]: retiring Guide Captain Mrs.Lynda Cavanagh: Judy McWhinnie {Canada Cord and disposal of garbage will require that nine Hun- tingdon area municipalities use one central dump as of Dec.1 this year. The new regulation also requires that burial of garbage be introduced at the site.Representatives of the municipalities of Hun- tingdon, Godmanchester, Hinchinbrooke, St.Anicet, Dundee, Ste-Barbe, Orm- stown, St, Malachie- d’Ormstown, and St.Stanislas-de-Kostka met with two representatives of the Quebec Department of the Environment in Seeding going well With all small grain seeding completed, and corn planting about 75-80 per cent done in the Chateauguay Valley, the most immediate requirement for farmers is more heat. That was the word early this week from Q.F.A.Fieldman Norm Hamilton of Ormstown, who also said that corn planting should be completed before the normal deadline of June 3.The first green shoots of oats, wheat, and barley were up two or three inches on the weekend, and the -arlier- planted corn was also up.“Actual corn planting is a bit behind last year, when it was pretty well finished by this time, but there should be no problem about getting it in during the next week or so,” Hamilton said.He described the moisture situation as ‘excellent maybe even little too much in some cases”.More small grains have been planted this year, and corn acreage is up about 10 per cent with both increases being attributed to cuts in cannery crop acreages.‘Although it's too early to know for sure, corn prices are looking good, '’’ Hamilton told The Gleaner.“Planting in the U.S.is running a bit behind schedule which might cause lower yields, and significant amounts of corn land have been retired by the U.S.government programs.“From what I hear, Ontario is in pretty good shape with about 80 per cent of planting completed.” Huntingdon on May 16 to hear details of the new law, proposed recently by Environment Minister Marcel Léger as part of a larger policy. The law specifies that burial is the preferred way of dealing with solid environmental wastes, and that regional dumps be set up, consisting of one acre per 10.000 population per year.See DUMP Page 8 12 nursing assistants pinned the Langs and Davises.Since his wife's death in 1970 he has lived alone or with his son Burton for company. He no longer attends the Seniors’ Club but he was one of the founding members and first leader of the group.Best wishes go to him from all these friends and many others, who think of him with love.Powerscourt A pantry shower was held Saturday afternoon May 13 at the home of Mrs.Stanley Myatt in honor of bride-elect Elizabeth Paul She arrived at the Myatt home to pick up a parcel and was much surprised to see her relatives and close neighbours waiting for her.A corsage was pinned on Elizabeth by her Aunt Janet after which she was seated beside her mother and future mother-in-law.She received many gifts from food to cleaning supplies.Elizabeth thanked everone and invited everyone to come visit in her new home.Refreshments were served by Beryl Myatt, Shirley Rutherford, Gail MacDonald, Roberta Wilson and Eleanor Middlemiss.Elizabeth cut and served her shower cake.SPRAYING BY HELICOPTER - One in 10 fires is caused by careless use of kerosene, gasoline or other inflammable fluids, and by carelessness in handling candles, open lights, lamps, open gas jets, torches, etc.Pouring kerosene on wood or coal fires is extremely dangerous.Using gasoline, benzine, naphtha and other inflammable liquids in the house for cleaning or similar purposes causes many tragedies each year. These fluids vaporize when exposed to air and may quickly produce an explosive mixture that is readily ignited by a match, pilot light, sparking motor or even a static spark developed from rubbing textiles together.Or the quickly spreading vapor may be exploded by a smoker or a fire in another room. You can never be safe using inflammable, explosive fluids in your house - or filling kerosene or gasoline stoves or lamps while they are lighted. If your clothing catches fire do not run.Running fans the flames and increases them.Lie down on the floor and roll, in a rug if you can.Don’t wear fuzzy, filmy, inflammable clothing around a stove or range. What to do if fire strikes - “But we feel that with election of the Parti Quebecois government the province has moved into uncertain times and this, possibly, is going to affect the future of the dairy industry. The question is will the market for dairy products increase? We have built this operation to go forward and only to produce milk and more milk.“So, when there came an opportunity to sell for a good price we had no alternative.” who married Gail Mac- Donald, a Huntingdon school teacher last fall, isn’t quite sure what he's going to do.“The sale puts me in a position where I don’ t have to work.” he said.“But I can buy another farm if I want to.” Hubert, living in Hun- tingdon since James’ marriage, has already been scouting for a farm in Ontario. He is going to marry Loraine Smith, a teacher from LaSalle, in July.James, Patricia The Atkinsons will stay on the farm for a month or so to help the new owners settle in now that their visas and other paperwork for their settlement in Canada have been cleared.“When we go I shall be leaving a large part of myself here,’ said James.“We have both put so much into it.” The Atkinson brothers always wanted to farm together and when they were 12 and 14 years old they shaped their plans to do exactly that as soon as they finished their schooling at College Bourget in Rigaud.“We have run the farm as a business but we love farming,” said James as he looked over their handsome layout four miles west of Huntingdon. The cows which came with the Bolduc farm were sold immediately by the brothers. Then they bought a herd of 49 Holsteins from F.C.McClennan in Lancaster, Ont.“From then on our goal was 18,000 pounds of milk per cow per year but the highest we ever made was 15,850," said James.‘I suppose it is not immodest to feel that we have produced as much milk possibly as any purebred herd in the country.” When they bought the Bolduc place the brothers took over a barn which would tie 60 head and one 20x60 foot silo.As their fortunes prospered they built a 50x80 foot free-stall barn and a milking parlor, a machine shed to house new, giant equipment which swelled productivity and two more silos. One is 20x60 feet, the other 24x80.James mentioned that brother Hubert turned out to be ‘‘a natural-born carpenter.” Much of the new construction was his own doing. Also he has been a better-than-average machinery man and mechanic. For the Atkinsons farming has been their life except for a three-year period in their late teens when they worked in Montreal, driving each day from Aubrey, to get their initial cash.“We started very small with only a few thousand dollars,” said James.Toward this figure his father, William Atkinson, helped a little from the Aubrey farm where he and his wife, Stella Brogan, brought up their family. That farm has belonged to Atkinsons from the early 1800s, 120 arpents purchased from the Beauharnois Seigniory. This is where brother John Atkinson operates today, known far and wide through the Chateauguay Valley for the fine draft horses he breeds and uses in farm work as well.Someone recently Membership books were distributed with the deadline for collecting set at July 1.from page | remarked to James Atkinson that he and his brother had never been seen at the various fairs with any of their animals. He just laughed and said: “There's a very good reason - we've never had time.” Neighbors who remember their arrival on the Bolduc farm agree. They say the brothers did nothing but work and took little part in the social life of the community.James put it this way: “It wasn't because we don't like people.I got married only last fall because until recently there wasn’t even time to meet the right girl.”
