cents Ormstown reports surplus for year For the first time in 10 years, Ormstown Village recorded an operating surplus in its financial statement for 1978.The surplus of $3,467, represents and upswing of $16,560 over the course of the year as the municipality had shown a deficit of $13,093 as of Dec.31, 1977.The 1978 statement, prepared by Quesnel, Masse and Associates, was approved at Monday night's Village Council meeting.One of the main factors in putting Ormstown into the black was the fact that over $3,000 earmarked in the budget for the first instalment on the cost of drawing up the new evaluation roll was not spent, as the payment will only fall due in 1979.In the revenue section, significant increases over budgetted amounts were noted in bank interest and sales tax compensation, which was $109,815 as compared to the budget estimate of $85,000.The quebec government came up with a $5,000 grant for road repairs and a sports and recreation grant of $2,267, which was passed on to the Ormstown Loisirs.In the expenses section, most categories showed increases over budget which were more or less in line with general cost-of-living and inflationary hikes over the year.Municipal roads cost less than budgetted, but snow removal totalled $21,475 as compared to $16,000 in the budget.Ormstown\u2019s share in the expenses of the Chateauguay County Council rose from the $1,000 predicted to $2,490.In the absence of Mayor James White and Councillors Maurice Filion and Gilles Brunet, a quorum composed of pro-mayor Donald Mc- Cormick and Councillors Pierre Sauvé, employ about 275 people, will go into production at Coteau du Lac within a year, according to DuPont president J.Edward Newall.Construction of the plant began in May, 1974, but after two years the Annual Macdonald College Livestock Show held in conjunction with the College Royal on Saturday March 3rd.This year was the first for the livestock Judging Competition to be incorporated into Royal Activities.It is hoped that it will become an annual event.The Howick foursome of Brian MacFarlane, Pam Ness, Ken Tolhurst and Scott Templeton topped the field in competition with 10 other teams.The young people had three classes to place: Swine, Ayrshire 3 year olds, Sire Selection Class.Team members were not allowed to confer with each other during the competition, and individual results were St-Etienne Patriotes.On Friday things were looking bright indeed for the local squad as they stretched their unbeaten streak to 10 games in a row with a 5-0 shutout of the Beauharnois Magasin Tisseur out what is happening.Hemmingford mourns Bill Main, dead at 86 After a lengthy illness, William (Bill) Main passed peacefully away at Barrie Memorial Hospital, Orm- stown, on Thursday, Feb.15.He was 86 years of age.Born in Glasgow, Scotland on Dec.1, 1892, he was the third of five children of William Main (Sr.) and of Agnes Johnston, his wife.His father was a master baker, working at this trade in Scotland, Ireland, Bermuda and then back in Scotland.At one time he went alone to Australia hoping to be established there.His family were all ready waiting for word to meet him.But through lack of proper communication, not hearing from them, he returned to Scotland.There he remained until the early 1920s when he came to Verdun.There, along with his youngest son, they established \u201cWilliam Main and Son Bakery\".During the past years it has changed hands several times, and until recently was carried on under that name.William Main was married on May 13, 1916, to Kate Samson Mann, who predeceased him in 1952.At that time he was a Picture House Manager.He was also an air mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps.Two sons, William and Cecil, were born in Scotland.He came to Canada in 1925, followed the next year by Former H\u2019 his family.For several years he was owner of his own garage in Notre Dame de Grace.At that time of his retirement he was a mechanic for Bonaventure Enterprises, formerly known as Provincial Transport, where he worked for many years.He was a Veteran of two wars and served in World War 1 while in Scotland.Along with his two sons, Bill and Cecil, he went overseas for four years in World War II.He was married to Bessie McNaughton (Lummis) on December 23, 1961 They lived in LaSalle for five years, then moved to Hemmingford, where they were living at the time of his death.A quiet and reserved man, he chose to stay close to his home and family.Those who met him were impressed by the strength of his character.To many who had the privilege of visiting him his hopsitality was unsurpassed.Born mechanic He was a born mechanic, and could put his hand to almost anything .What he chose to do must be as perfect as he could make it before putting it aside.He would often invent something when necessary to meet his needs.A lover of clocks, he had over 20 in his home, some electric, some eight-day clocks, and some had to be \u201crolled up\" every night.He ford man dies in Plattsburgh Funeral services for Joseph D.Perras were held Feb.15, 1979 at St.John's Church, Plattsburgh, N.Y.He died Feb.12 in C.V.P.H.Medical Center after a brief illness.Joseph Perras was born in Hemmingford, son of Alphonse and Adelaide (Miller) Perras.He resided in Hemmingford until 1928 when he moved with his family to Valcour, N.Y.At the time of his death, he was president of Rosebud Creamery, Inc.in Plattsburgh, which he and his son had purchased in 1049.He was a communicant of St.John's Church in Plattsburgh and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 255.He is survived by his wife, Gladys two Sample Perras; Frederick (Ted) of Platt- sons, sburgh and Reginald of Saranac.Lake, N.Y.; four daughters, Eileen and Suzanne Perras, both of Albany, N.Y.; Mrs.Dennis (Lita) Bechard of West Chazy, N.Y.; and Mrs.Joseph (Shirley) Abraham of Teaneck, N.J.; a brother, Frank and a sister Lilah both of Hem- mingford; 14 grandchilren and several nieces and nephews.Bearers were Frank Gale, Leon Perras, Noel Perras, Come Perras, Gerard Fortier, and Senator Ronald Stafford.Honorary bearers were Lucien Belair, Clyde Lewis, John McGualley and Arthur Panton.was able to keep most of them in repair.He also took a keen interest in television, radio, camera, home movies and especially his tape recorder, and took great pleasure in recording the voices recorder and played back to him the next day He had a poem.*\u2018The Old Plaid Shawl\u201d which was a favourite.Helen put this to music and went back another day to play it for him.He was able both times to sing along with her Right to the last, he bore his suffering rather than put at any inconvience those who cared for him.He gave great courage and strength to those around him, and did his best to be cheerful.He was a real gentleman, a good man who led a full life.He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.William Main is survived by his wife, two sons, Bill and Cecil, daughter-in-law Ellen, five grandchildren and 11 great-grand- children.Funeral services were held at St.Andrew's United Church, Hemmingford, Sunday afternoon, February 18 at 2:30.Helen Wiley played her guitar and sang.\u2018\u2018Amazing Grace\u2019.The choir sang, \u201cHow Great Thou Art\".Final tribute was given Bill by Reverend Svend Holm, who spoke of his visits with him, especially during As many people know, the Huntingdon Minor Hockey Association was host to the Amherst Mass.Hockey Association and our little town was filled with players and parents from the south.For many Hun- tingdonians who have children involved in minor hockey, the weekend proved to be a hectic one due to guest players being billeted in our homes, trips back and forth to the arena, areception party on Friday evening and dance for the parents on Saturday night, ete.Nevertheless, our children experienced the pleasure of hosting players who received them in Ambherst in January of this year and solidified many friendships that will last for many years.Both our young francophones and anglophones recieved our young American ambassadors and certainly both visitor and host learned much about each others way of life.For kids who live in a small town, I personally feel that this type of experience is needed lest our children become too parochial.Lastly, the quality of the hockey was terrific.The Ambherst teams showed us individual kingpins can't win games.This whole weekend of hockey fun and excitment was apparently due to the hard work and organization of Raymond Stonehouse of Huntingdon.He and his organizing committee including his better half, deserve the credit for this tournament which was so successful.They say the true sign of a good organizer is his pleasure of taking on a low profile while the event is in motion.Ray had things so well organized that he was abie to miss the Saturday night dance.He apparently was sick.No wonder.Thank you Ray Stonehouse.If our to find a name for the Huntingdon Senior Citizen's Home wishes to thank all those who responded to their call for suggestions.We received 34 separate suggestions - all of which were carefully considered.These came from all over the area as well as from the town of Huntingdon.We received ideas from St.Anicet, Howick, Orm- stown, Dewittville, Franklin Centre, Ahhelstan, Pointe Claire, Burke, adopting a child from an underdeveloped area.To be adopted a a child must show above average intelligence and that he or she could not continue without financial aid.If the child showed real ability, Senior and Junior levels hested teams from Centennial, with the end result only one win out of the four games.The Senior girls were the only team to win, although the score was not in their favor at the half time mark.By playing a much better game in the second half, the girls managed to win the game by 30 points.The Senior boys played excellent basketball, and really did a good job of keeping their opponents.score down, considering the calibre of Centennial\u2019s team.The game ended in a 88-56 loss, with Bernard Bergeron as top scorer at 14 and Kevin McMullan at 10.The Junior boys, not unlike the Senior girls, didn't seem to have their minds on basketball in the first half and fell far behind.Though they made a terrific comeback in the second half, and took a stab at winning, they just weren't strong enough, and lost by six points, 69-63.Scott Tennant and Gary Bott each scored 16 points, and Joey Amos added another 12.Perhaps the most exciting game of the four beionged to the Junior girls, who played a touch- and-go game in the second half.Leading by one point with just under 10 seconds left, Centennial scored a basket, putting themselves in the lead, 51-50.And that\u2019s how the game ended, with top scorers Jackie Arzouian with 18 points and Pam Elliot with 14, On Tuesday, both junior teams travelled to Chambly County to play make-up games.The Junior boys felt at a big disadvantage playing in a small gym, and it tended fo; throw their game.But the girls were determined to win, and proved they could, by winning 34-23.But that wasn't the end of the sports week, as both Senior teams participated in a tournament at Billings High School.The girls played Billings first, and lost by only one point, 43-42, the best they've ever done against that school.In their second game against L.P.P.the girls easily overcame their opponents in a 98-33 rout.The boys\u2019 game seemed to be jinxed, and they certainly had their troubles.In the third quarter, four of their pour les chiens, et le taux suggéré est de $10.00, avec le partage de la somme entre les deux parties, le contracteur et la ville.La Chenil Effel s'engage également à détruire tout chien ou chat pas
