[" Lace tn» Er ie tree ES So S/S I OS Oe Cm a ni 2 me at er +4 Strike looms for Valley schools next Next week may well see a general strike by both English and French teachers in the Chateauguay Valley and across the province, in protest against lack of progress in contract negotiations.The Chateauguay Valley Teachers’ Association changed its position Monday afternoon and voted 61 per cent in favor of giving their leaders a mandate to strike.On Oct.16 they had voted against the strike mandate 121 ba 114, but with about 20 more of the union's 340 members on hand at Monday’s meeting in Howick, and a more militant climate, the vote was 156 in favor of the strike and 99 against.CVTA President Howard Simpkin of Chateauguay attributed the change in the vote to the fact that since the last meeting most members of the CEQ (French teachers’ union) and eight of the other nine PAPT member unions have come out in favor of possible strike action.‘There was definitely a change of feeling at this meeting,’ he said.“It seems a lot of people reconsidered their position” In the Catholic sector, last week saw 75 per cent of the CEQ members employed by the Huntingdon Catholic School Commission vote in favor of the strike mandate.PAPT and CEQ executive will meet this week to set a strike deadline.“As matters now stand, it’s likely that the general strike, week which will go on as long as necessary, will begin sometime next week," said Simpkin,””’ but we would like to make clear to parents and others that, in accordance with the Quebec Labor Code, 48 hours notice of any strike action will be given and everything will be handled FOURNITURES ORGANIQUES POUR JARDINS ORGANIC GARDEN SUPPLIES + POELES À BOIS ETANCHES À All Canadians living in Quebec would have the right to Quebec citizenship with a separate Quebec passport.Goods, people and money would continue to move freely between Quebec and Canada.The Canadian dollar would be retained as common currency.Quebec would be willing to become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and NORAD, the air defence organization now made up of Canada and the U.S.Quebec would have its own army.more to the The reaction of the rest of Canada has been mostly negative so far.Most other provinces have said they would not negotiate association with a separate Quebec.[ When the time comes, if it comes, they may well change their minds].Prime Minister Clark called the proposals ‘‘absolutely unacceptable,” but said he wouldn't take an active part in the battle.It was a Quebec matter, he said.The Opposition jumped ono this, asking that if keeping Canada together wasn’t a Canadian problem, just what was it?[One observer saw it as if the captain of Team Canada had decided not to play hockey against the Russians].Opposition Leader Trudeau gave notice he would continue to battle his old friend René Levesque on the question to the bitter end.Quebec Liberal leader Claude Ryan pooh- poohed the white paper and made another plea for ‘‘renewed federalism’, still without defining what he means by that.On the night the white paper was introduced Mr.Ryan made a speech proposing that Anglophones should learn French so they would be more ‘‘serene’’ about the separation question.It was not a suggestion which would particularly endear him to Westmount rednecks.These reactions point up the fact that the situation cries out for a messiah for the Quebec English.Many of them don't entirely trust Messrs.Trudeau or Ryan.Nor do they have much faith in Prime Minister Clark, even if he did decide to jump into the fray.The various Canada-Quebec movements seem to have drowned in their own rhetoric.Much of the media shows its anti-Levesque bias at the expense of its credibility.Throughout the Valley there is almost no public discussion of the question.Perhaps because the English have no messiah, there are no apostles in the Valley, REMEMBRANCE DAY Next Sunday is Remembrance Day and will be marked, as usual, with special services in the various Chateauguay Valley Communities.As the years go by since the two World Wars, whose victims are honored annually on Nov.11, there are fewer people who actually do have personal remembrances of the grim and in some ways glorious days of those wears.Especially in this International Year of the Child, it would be a great thing if we could use some kind of magic time-machine process to ‘remember forward" as well as look back.If we could do this with any hope of influencing the futurte, we could ensure that our children will never have to take an active role in another such war - the cause of our Remembrance Days.Rmembrance Day is a cuncept worthy of respect, full of dignity and honor for those who fought and those who died.For children now, at least in North America, it is a more time to think of ideals, rather than of individual people whom they may know only at secondhand, through reminders from older family members or through names recorded on a cenotaph or plaque.But for the children elsewhere in the world, in Southeast Asia for example, war and its terrible aftermath are still very much a reality.So on this 1979 Remembrance Day, let us honor our dead and living war veterans but also ‘remember forward'’ on behalf of children everywhere.In the three-way race of Mayor.opponent Wilfrid Arcoite.The final count, with about 263 out of 430 eligible voters turning out was 203 for for Fletcher and 56 for Arcoite.Fletcher told The Gleaner Monday night that he was happy with the victory, and hoped “to keep things going in an honest way” He was especially pleased to be able to from page 1 continue his involvement in the local low-cost housing project for senior citizens, construction of which is scheduled to start today (Wednesday).In other Howick Village polling Seat 1 incumbent Léo Rose lost to new candidate Denis Barbeau 151 to 102; I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings” etc.John was 19, killed while flying a Spitfire.He was one of 17,000 Royal Canadian Air Force War dead in World War II.On Nov.11 we can only remember the dead.But we can do something more for the living, for the wounded and those who were left behind.The memory cannot be erased.Many of them need help through no fault of their own.At our Legion.Meetings there are a few words we say in remembrance of all our comrades who have passed on so for Old Bill and others they are ‘‘at the going down of the sun and in the morning - We will remember them.Lest we forget.” So this year buy a Poppy and wear it proudly in remembrance of the Peace their sacrifice gave to all of us.Paul Patterson C.L.S.C.still looking for location in Ormstown Huntingdon, Que.Nov, 5, 1979 The Editor The Gleaner Dear Sir: For several weeks now, workers of the C.L.S.C.Huntingdon have been looking for a building to rent in Ormstown consisting either of commercial premises or a private house within the village limits.We proceeded by asking for public submissions (tenders) amd to date we have received only one offer.Many among you are probably asking yourselves why workers of the C.L.S.C.Huntingdon wish to open a service point in Ormstown.Briefly, one of the aims of the C.L.S.C.is to be in closer contact with the population, that is to say, workers want to give services with less red tape involved, by giving more individual and humanized attention to those who request it.The fact that nurses, homemakers, social workers, community organizers and secretaries are on the spot would allow them to respond more rapidly and efficiently to the requests for care, consultations or other various services.In short, we are impatiently waiting for you to contact us if you have either a building or private house for rent having not less than 2,500 square feet.You can get in touch with us by calling Huntingdon at 264-6108 between 9 a.m.and 5 pm.from Mnday to Friday and ask for Lucie Brown.C.L.S.C.Workers for the Ormstown team C.L.S.C.Huntingdon, Those who remember the Norman Dawson family from the time they spent in Howick will be pleased to know that Norm and Irene celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary last Saturday evening.A party was held at Frank Dawson's home in Ottawa where family and friends gathered to honour the bride and groom.The Dawsons lived here in the early '60s and then were transferred to Ottawa.Norm's job with the Bell has since taken them to far away countries - Turkey and Peru to name two of them.They are back in Ottawa now, enjoying Canada’s capital city and their grown-up family.The Dedication of a memorial gift took place at Howick United Church on Sunday morning during the regular worship service.A carved wooden Baptismal Font was presented to the Congregation by Dr.R.J.McCleaghan in memory of his wife, Violet Susan MacFarlane and also Mr.and Mrs.Wm.Brown, Laura (Mac- Farlane), May (Knox) and Eva (Peddie).The acceptance was given by Rev.John Anderson.Music played an important part in the worship;
