Firemen were called out to fight a blaze at the barn of Albert Hanna on Rte.202 a few miles east of Hemmingford. The large barn, approximately 50° by 130 feet, was ablaze at one end and the 14 horses stabled there were being led to safety by the farm manager and his assistants. The firemen, under Acting- Chief Gaetan Fortin, aided by —_ Asst-Engineer Fred Orr, concentrated on containing the fire at the end of the barn.Overhead were an estimated 35 tons of hay. This they could not save out a little further along was the bulk of the hay harvest, upwards of 500 tons and this, with the remainder of the long barn, the firemen managed to save.Firemen from Mooers, Champlain, and Rouse's Point, N.Y.under Co- Ordinator George Rivers of Rouse’s Point, were called See FIRES page 2 Roy Social Services Centre, Canada Manpower in Hun- tingdon, Doréa Institute, and the Community Health Department. Also on hand were personnel from (French) Adult Education, the Partage et Coutumes project in St.Chrysostome, and the Reginal Committee for the Retired and Pre-retired.A sour note was struck as the workshops began with the ejection of seven directors of various agencies from the sessions, which organizers said, were designed only for staff and members of the public. The seven, including Huntingdon Academy Principal Roland Greenbank, Ormstown Centre d'Accueil Director Florian ‘lardif, an Bruno Maheu ot the CSS Kichelieu later issued a statement deploring the action.“Attendance would have let us get closer to the needs of the area. This distance is useless and does to the recent decision by all Centres d'Accueil in Quebec, including that in Ormstown to call a halt to admissions due to increased workload on staff. The Huntingdon Centre d’Accueil, he said , would have a capacity of 75 beds (the same as Ormstown) while that in St.Chrysostome would house 50 patients.“It is ultimately the responsibility of the CSS Richelieu to supply the elderly with whatever services they need, and when their independence is no longer possible, to admit them to a Centre d'Accueil.‘Since the c,-ning of the Ormstown Centre, only .part of the needs of the region have been met.At the same time, some inadequate private facilites have disappeared, home care has been provided where possible, and numbers of chronic care patients in the hospitals have stabilized.” Maheu presented statistics showing that the proposed Huntingdon Centre d’Accueil would serve the populations of Ste-Agnes-de-Dundee, Elgin, Godmanchester, Hin- chinbrooke, Huntingdon, St.Anicet, and Ste.Barbe, which have a combined population of 1,250 elderly people (over 65) out of a total of 10,454.By estimating the need for places as six per cent of the elderly population, the 75 bed figure is arrived at.See CENTRES page 3 GERALD BRISEBOIS As an example, he mentioned the fact that apple producers have more than doubled their revenues following negotiations des personnes âgées anglophones, on a remarqué la participation de Carol Hay, Holly Moneypenny et Beverly Roy du Shut-In Program, Centre de Services Sociaux Richelieu. La Commission scolaire de Huntingdon s’y refuse.LA COMMISSION SCOLAIRE DE HUNTINGDON 77 ES éteint THE GLEANER — MARCH 12 1980 news from huntingdon's craft and recreation centre by suff wilso es À if 18 + i Our ceramics teacher must be pleased with the enthusiasm shown by members of her class, an enthusiasm which appears to be extending to the general membership. However, we must remind you that this group is now full and limited to members of the Centre only.Space in the class will become available during the next tew weeks. Please see me before deciding to take part so that the class does not become too big and the teacher has a chance to prepare for you.Because of the interest shown in the trip to Fair- view Shopping Centre we have decided to charter a second bus so that everyone who wants to go can do so.We can now accommodate 92 people instead of 47.Please feel free to invite a friend and help us fill all the seats. The date is Monday, March 31 leaving the Legion Hall at 9:30 a.m.and returning to Huntingdon by 4 p.m.In the event the second bus cannot be filled we will have to cancel it thus disappointing a number of people. We have selected dates for the first two handicraft displays to be held this spring at the Centre. The first is Wednesday, April 16 and will be devoted to needlepoint and crewel work. The second is Wednesday, April 30 and will involve macramé and all forms of rug work including pillow covers and pillows, wall hangings, mats and rugs.Punched, hooked and braided methods will be displayed. It is hoped that all members who have worked on these crafts either at home or at the Centre will gather their projects together for the exhibitions.Information regarding storage, identification, and times will he given out during upcoming sessions of the Centre.Quilting enthusiasts will be delighted to see the latest quilt on the frame when they arrive at the hall today. It's a double-bed Dresden Plate and with two now ready for work, there wiil oe plenty of space for everyone who loves quilting.; Last Wednesday we welcomed a group from the Western division of St.Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to the centre. They served very nice refreshments to a large crowd for which we thank them.During tea we expressed birthday greetings to Mabel Donnely, Arlene McIntosh, Louise Mc- Pherson, Doris Ryan, Mario Von Brentani, and Bill Wilson. Our best to each one of you.Next week we will break for tea a bit early at 3:15 and settle down for a brief period of music, song, dance, refreshments and, hopefully, your limericks in honor of St.Patrick.See you all then! Ormstown Mr.and Mrs.Winston Keeler spent last weekend in Valcartier with Mr.and Mrs.Dick Keeler and family.Lifetime Athelstan resident “"Pete’’ Shearer dies at 68 The village of Athelstan and surrounding community were greatly shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Bertie Shearer, better known to all as Pete, on Sunday March 2.He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Margaret, only son Glen, daughter-in- law Shirley, one brother John, a sister-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. It seems the end of an era when one of the very few remaining life-long Athelstan residents was taken so suddenly, even though his health had failed the past few years.Born in 1912, Pete spent his entire life living and working in the village “PETE” SHEARER where he began his first garage in 1935 in an old black-smith shop, beside his parents’ home.Upon being married to the former Margaret Wood, they moved to their present home and he transferred his business to yet another black-smith shop, situated on the present garage site.In the early 40's this building was destroyed by fire and was replaced by moving a barn across the back field from the then Howick The Howick Seniors met on March 5, with attendance down somewhat due to widespread sickness and several members being away on holiday.,.A visitor was welcomed.Games winners were: Bridge - Addie Roy and Agnes Brown; 500 - Jennie McKell; Euchre - Gordon Hope; Scrabble and checkers - Ida Gallie and Harry Hampson farm.In February 1952 tragedy struck once more when this structure was razed by fire, causing much concern to the local farmers and others who had become very dependent upon Pete and his business. At that time the existing building was erected and in a few years Glen started to work with his father.Once more the area had its own repair shop where folks could take anything from a bicycle tire to a major automotive breakdown. As well as operating the Garage, Pete was also the local rural mailman from 1942 until his untimely death, and in recent years, Margaret helped him on his daily rounds. At the close of this year he had planned to retire after completing 38 years continued service. In 1964 when the Hin- chinbrooke Volunteer Fire Brigade was organized, Pete at once became an active member, always willing to do his share, until he suffered his first heart attack in 1970, and had to remove his name from active duty. Here again the family became involved.Glen was also a fireman and Margaret acted as a fire phone operator for several years, even after Pete became ill and had to withdraw. Not only was Pete's the place to fill up the gas tank or fix a break, but it was known far and wide as the gathering place for the men to take a few minutes out of their busy work day to stop in for a coke and catch up on the latest news. His unique good-natured humor and friendliness will be greatly missed, but Glen plans to continue to operate his father’s business and it will remain the local gathering place, so for some years yet to come, the Garage will still be known as Pete's.Funeral services were held from the McIntyre Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 4, with the Rev.Bruce Dennis conducting a very moving service, assisted by Pete's longtime friend Father Marcil of Herdman.Pallbearers were Messrs.Henry Clauesson, John McHardy, John Stirling Jr., Richard Panunzio, Arthur Lumsden and Donald Grant Interment will be in the Powerscourt cemetery in the spring.During the month ot March and get a PET ESS Guaranteed Income Supplement or Spouse’s @R Allowance benefit gi recipients!
